Hydrogels from a Self-Assembling Tripeptide and Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs): Comparison between Single-Walled and Double-Walled CNTs.

ABSTRACT: Supramolecular hydrogels obtained from the self-organization of simple peptides, such as tripeptides, are attractive soft materials. Their viscoelastic properties can be enhanced through the inclusion of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), although their presence can also hinder self-assembly, thus requiring investigation of the compatibility of CNMs with peptide supramolecular organization. In this work, we compared single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) as nanostructured additives for a tripeptide hydrogel, revealing superior performance by the latter. Several spectroscopic techniques, as well as thermogravimetric analyses, microscopy, and rheology data, provide details to elucidate the structure and behavior of nanocomposite hydrogels of this kind.

Self-assembling peptide coatings designed for highly luminescent suspension of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Project description:A series of self-assembling multidomain peptides have been designed, synthesized, and tested for their ability to individually suspend single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in water while preserving strong near-IR nanotube luminescence. Photometric and spectral measurements on individual SWCNTs revealed that emission in the common biocompatible coating agents Pluronic F127, ss-DNA, and BSA is approximately an order of magnitude weaker than in the bioincompatible ionic surfactant SDBS. By contrast, one of the engineered peptides gave SWCNT emission approximately 40% as intense as in SDBS. A strong inverse correlation was also found between the spectral line widths of coated SWCNTs and the efficiency of their emission. Peptides with rationally designed self-assembly properties appear to be promising coatings that may enable SWCNT optical sensing applications in biological environments.

Self-Organized Micro-Spiral of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are reported to spontaneously align in a rotational pattern by drying a liquid droplet of toluene containing polyfluorene as a dispersant. By situating a droplet of an SWCNT solution around a glass bead, spiral patterns are generated. The parallel alignment of SWCNTs along one stripe of such a pattern is confirmed using scanning electron microscopy and polarized optical microscopy. The orientation order increases toward the outer edge of a stripe. The stripe width in the pattern is proportional to the solute concentration, and the width and position of the stripes follow geometric sequences. The growth of the rotational pattern is also observed in real time. The process of spiral pattern formation is visualized, indicating the role of the annihilation of counter-traveling accompanied by continuous depinning. The geometric sequences for the stripe width and position are explained by the near-constant traveling speed and solute enrichment at the droplet periphery.

Molecular Evolutionary Growth of Ultralong Semiconducting Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:The self-assembling preparation accompanied with template auto-catalysis loop and the ability to gather energy, induces the appearance of chirality and entropy reduction in biotic systems. However, an abiotic system with biotic characteristics is of great significance but still missing. Here, it is demonstrated that the molecular evolution is characteristic of ultralong carbon nanotube preparation, revealing the advantage of chiral assembly through template auto-catalysis growth, stepwise-enriched chirality distribution with decreasing entropy, and environmental effects on the evolutionary growth. Specifically, the defective and metallic nanotubes perform inferiority to semiconducting counterparts, among of which the ones with double walls and specific chirality (n, m) are more predominant due to molecular coevolution. An explicit evolutionary trend for tailoring certain layer chirality is presented toward perfect near-(2n, n)-containing semiconducting double-walled nanotubes. These findings extend our conceptual understanding for the template auto-catalysis assembly of abiotic carbon nanotubes, and provide an inspiration for preparing chiral materials with kinetic stability by evolutionary growth.

Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes as Fluorescent Probes for Monitoring the Self-Assembly and Morphology of Peptide/Polymer Hybrid Hydrogels.

Project description:Hydrogels formed via supramolecular self-assembly of fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl (Fmoc)-conjugated amino acids provide excellent scaffolds for 3D cell culture, tissue engineering, and tissue recovery matrices. Such hydrogels are usually characterized by rheology or electron microscopy, which are invasive and cannot provide real-time information. Here, we incorporate near-infrared fluorescent single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into Fmoc-diphenylalanine hydrogels as fluorescent probes, reporting in real-time on the morphology and time-dependent structural changes of the self-assembled hydrogels in the transparency window of biological tissue. We further demonstrate that the gelation process and structural changes upon the addition of cross-linking ions are transduced into spectral modulations of the SWCNT-fluorescence. Moreover, morphological differences of the hydrogels induced by polymer additives are manifested in unique features in fluorescence images of the incorporated SWCNTs. SWCNTs can thus serve as optical probes for noninvasive, long-term monitoring of the self-assembly gelation process and the fate of the resulting peptide hydrogel during long-term usage.

TEGylated Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes as Platforms to Engineer Neuronal Networks.

Project description:In the past two decades, important results have been obtained on the application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as components of smart interfaces promoting neuronal growth and differentiation. Different forms of CNTs have been employed as scaffolds, including raw CNTs and functionalized CNTs, characterized by a different number of walls, mainly single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) or multiwalled CNTs (MWCNTs). However, double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs), which present interesting electronic and transport properties, have barely been studied in the field. Apart from the electrical conductivity, the morphology, shape, porosity, and corresponding mechanical properties of the scaffold material are important parameters when dealing with neuronal cells. Thus, the presence of open porous and interconnected networks is essential for cell growth and differentiation. Here, we present an easy methodology to prepare porous self-standing and electrically conductive DWCNT-based scaffolds and study the growth of neuro/glial networks and their synaptic activity. A cross-linking approach with triethylene glycol (TEG) derivatives is applied to improve the tensile performance of the scaffolds while neuronal growth and differentiation are promoted. By testing different DWCNT-based constructs, we confirm that the manufactured structures guarantee a biocompatible scaffold, while favoring the design of artificial networks with high complexity.

Enhanced methylene blue adsorption using single-walled carbon nanotubes/chitosan-graft-gelatin nanocomposite hydrogels.

Project description:In the present study, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) incorporating chitosan-graft-gelatin (CS-g-GEL/SWCNTs) hydrogels were fabricated with multiple advantages, including cost-effectiveness, high efficiency, biodegradability, and ease of separation for methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution. To verify the successful formulation of the prepared hydrogels, various characterization methods such as NMR, FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM, TGA, BET, and EDX were employed. The removal efficiency of CS-g-GEL/SWCNTs nanocomposite hydrogel increased significantly to 98.87% when the SWCNTs percentage was increased to 20%. The highest adsorption was observed for pH = 9, an adsorbent dose = 1.5 g L-1, a temperature = 25 °C, a contact time = 60 min, and a contaminant concentration = 20 mg L-1. Based on the thermodynamic results, spontaneous adsorption occurred from a negative Gibbs free energy (ΔG°). In addition, the thermodynamic analysis of the adsorption process revealed an average enthalpy of - 21.869 kJ mol-1 for the adsorption process at a temperature range of 25-45 °C, which indicates its spontaneous and exothermic behavior. The Langmuir isotherm model was successfully used to describe the equilibrium behavior of adsorption. The pseudo-first-order model better described adsorption kinetics compared to the pseudo-second-order, intra-particle, and Elovich models. CS-g-GEL/SWCNTs hydrogels have improved reusability for five consecutive cycles, suggesting that they may be effective for removing anionic dyes from aquatic environments.

Flow of long chain hydrocarbons through carbon nanotubes (CNTs).

Project description:The pressure-driven flow of long-chain hydrocarbons in nanosized pores is important in energy, environmental, biological, and pharmaceutical applications. This paper examines the flow of hexane, heptane, and decane in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of pore diameters 1-8 nm using molecular dynamic simulations. Enhancement of water flow in CNTs in comparison to rates predicted by continuum models has been well established in the literature. Our work was intended to observe if molecular dynamic simulations of hydrocarbon flow in CNTs produced similar enhancements. We used the OPLS-AA force field to simulate the hydrocarbons and the CNTs. Our simulations predicted the bulk densities of the hydrocarbons to be within 3% of the literature values. Molecular sizes and shapes of the hydrocarbon molecules compared to the pore size create interesting density patterns for smaller sized CNTs. We observed moderate flow enhancements for all the hydrocarbons (1-100) flowing through small-sized CNTs. For very small CNTs the larger hydrocarbons were forced to flow in a cork-screw fashion. As a result of this flow orientation, the larger molecules flowed as effectively (similar enhancements) as the smaller hydrocarbons.

Bovine Serum Albumin Molecularly Imprinted Electrochemical Sensors Modified by Carboxylated Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes/CaAlg Hydrogels.

Project description:In this paper, sodium alginate (NaAlg) was used as functional monomers, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as template molecules, and calcium chloride (CaCl2) aqueous solution was used as a cross-linking agent to prepare BSA molecularly imprinted carboxylated multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CMWCNT)/CaAlg hydrogel films (MIPs) and non-imprinted hydrogel films (NIPs). The adsorption capacity of the MIP film for BSA was 27.23 mg/g and the imprinting efficiency was 2.73. The MIP and NIP hydrogel film were loaded on the surface of the printed electrode, and electrochemical performance tests were carried out by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) using the electrochemical workstation. The loaded MIP film and NIP film effectively improved the electrochemical signal of the bare carbon electrode. When the pH value of the Tris HCl elution solution was 7.4, the elution time was 15 min and the adsorption time was 15 min, and the peak currents of MIP-modified electrodes and NIP-modified electrodes reached their maximum values. There was a specific interaction between MIP-modified electrodes and BSA, exhibiting specific recognition for BSA. In addition, the MIP-modified electrodes had good anti-interference, reusability, stability, and reproducibility. The detection limit (LOD) was 5.6 × 10-6 mg mL-1.

Self-Sorting of 10-µm-Long Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes in Aqueous Solution.

Project description:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are a class of 1D nanomaterials that exhibit extraordinary electrical and optical properties. However, many of their fundamental studies and practical applications are stymied by sample polydispersity. SWCNTs are synthesized in bulk with broad structural (chirality) and geometrical (length and diameter) distributions; problematically, all known post-synthetic sorting methods rely on ultrasonication, which cuts SWCNTs into short segments (typically <1 µm). It is demonstrated that ultralong (>10 µm) SWCNTs can be efficiently separated from shorter ones through a solution-phase "self-sorting". It is shown that thin-film transistors fabricated from long semiconducting SWCNTs exhibit a carrier mobility as high as ≈90 cm2 V-1 s-1 , which is ≈10 times higher than those which use shorter counterparts and well exceeds other known materials such as organic semiconducting polymers (<1 cm2 V-1 s-1 ), amorphous silicon (≈1 cm2 V-1 s-1 ), and nanocrystalline silicon (≈50 cm2 V-1 s-1 ). Mechanistic studies suggest that this self-sorting is driven by the length-dependent solution phase behavior of rigid rods. This length sorting technique shows a path to attain long-sought ultralong, electronically pure carbon nanotube materials through scalable solution processing.

Carboxylated short single-walled carbon nanotubes but not plain and multi-walled short carbon nanotubes show in vitro genotoxicity.

Project description:Long carbon nanotubes (CNTs) resemble asbestos fibers due to their high length to diameter ratio and they thus have genotoxic effects. Another parameter that might explain their genotoxic effects is contamination with heavy metal ions. On the other hand, short (1-2 µm) CNTs do not resemble asbestos fibers, and, once purified from contaminations, they might be suitable for medical applications. To identify the role of fiber thickness and surface properties on genotoxicity, well-characterized short pristine and carboxylated single-walled (SCNTs) and multi-walled (MCNTs) CNTs of different diameters were studied for cytotoxicity, the cell's response to oxidative stress (immunoreactivity against hemoxygenase 1 and glutathione levels), and in a hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) assay using V79 chinese hamster fibroblasts and human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells. DNA repair was demonstrated by measuring immunoreactivity against activated histone H2AX protein. The number of micronuclei as well as the number of multinucleated cells was determined. CNTs acted more cytotoxic in V79 than in A549 cells. Plain and carboxylated thin (<8 nm) SCNTs and MCNTs showed greater cytotoxic potential and carboxylated CNTs showed indication for generating oxidative stress. Multi-walled CNTs did not cause HPRT mutation, micronucleus formation, DNA damage, interference with cell division, and oxidative stress. Carboxylated, but not plain, SCNTs showed indication for in vitro DNA damage according to increase of H2AX-immunoreactive cells and HPRT mutation. Although short CNTs presented a low in vitro genotoxicity, functionalization of short SCNTs can render these particles genotoxic.
