Project description:BackgroundBasic science education is universally acknowledged as a pivotal component of medical education. In China, medical students undergo significant preclinical training but often lack scientific thinking. As China transitions to a knowledge-intensive nation, addressing this gap is crucial. This research aims to qualitatively and quantitatively examine how sophomore medical students perceive the roles of basic laboratory courses, assess whether open-ended experiments can change these perceptions, and qualitatively determine their feelings towards experienced open-ended experiments.MethodsThis study has an interventional design, surveying students before and after an open-ended experiment to evaluate its impact on their perceptions of the roles of the basic laboratory course. Quantitative methods, including frequency analysis, Kendall's W test, the chi-square test, and an independent t test, were used to analyse the rankings of the roles of basic laboratory courses thoroughly. Moreover, qualitative thematic analysis provides insights into students' experiences with the open-ended experiments.ResultsThe study revealed that the students in the historical control groups considered learning to master experimental operation techniques as the most important role of the laboratory courses, whereas the students in the post-intervention groups regarded cultivating scientific thinking as the most crucial role. Compared with the historical control groups, the post-intervention groups attached greater importance to the role of cultivating scientific thinking, which was statistically significant. The main concerns and experiences of the open-ended experiments discussed by participants from the historical control groups were summarized into two themes: "negatively biased feelings of open-ended experiments" and "inappropriate for open-ended experiments at present". However, the two major themes that emerged from the post-intervention groups are "positively biased feelings of open-ended experiments" and "moderate and appropriate open-ended experiments at present".ConclusionsThis study revealed that medical students' perceptions of the roles of laboratory courses were influenced by experimental teaching methods. Open-ended experiments have emerged as effective tools for fostering scientific thinking. This research emphasizes the importance of refining teaching methods in the preclinical phase to foster an environment conducive for enhancing the scientific thinking of Chinese students and the overall effectiveness of medical education.

Project description:Training in fundamental laboratory methodologies is valuable to medical students because it enables them to understand the published literature, critically evaluate clinical studies, and make informed decisions regarding patient care. It also prepares them for research opportunities that may complement their medical practice. The National College of Natural Medicine's (NCNM) Master of Science in Integrative Medicine Research (MSiMR) program has developed an Introduction to Laboratory Methods course. The objective of the course it to train clinical students how to perform basic laboratory skills, analyze and manage data, and judiciously assess biomedical studies. Here we describe the course development and implementation as it applies to complementary and integrative medicine students.

Project description:IntroductionA complete medical school curriculum must include an introduction to first aid; the management of airway, breathing, and circulation; and basic medical emergencies. The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York underscored the need for such training for US students even in their preclinical years. During that tragedy, many Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC) preclinical students were eager to volunteer at Ground Zero and in the emergency department, yet it was clear they were not prepared for even basic medical emergencies this early in their training. To address this gap, in 2002 we incorporated this expanded first-responder course into the first-year doctoring class at WCMC.MethodsThe course includes a morning of lectures followed by related workshops. Students also practice managing ill patients in multiple case scenarios and participate in a tabletop disaster-management exercise.ResultsThis course has become a mainstay of our first-year curriculum, receiving high praise from students annually. It generates tremendous interest in emergency medicine and lays a foundation of basic emergency medicine knowledge for students at an early point in their education.DiscussionThe unique experience of our medical school during the 9/11 tragedy highlighted the need for a course that would introduce preclinical medical students to the basic skills needed to assist in emergency scenarios in the field. Over the past 13 years, this course has developed into an essential part of our preclinical curriculum and has been strengthened through changes made based on student feedback.

Project description:BackgroundThere is a growing, global awareness and recognition of the important, interdependent relationships between our natural world and human health. Several contemporary health organizations have placed calls to action and emphasize an urgent need for collaboration and interdisciplinary research, education, and clinical work to address the increasing degradation of our planetary and human health. With more research dedicated to nature's health impacts, health professions schools would benefit by including such training in their programs while also cultivating a comprehensive mind-body health perspective to support both the health of student practitioners and their future patients.ObjectiveThe present program evaluation investigates a five-day outdoor mini-course covering nature-based health techniques at a medical and dental school in the American Northeast. This unique outdoor course combines nature, creativity, and reflection within the context of modern medicine.MethodsA concurrent mixed-method design using descriptive statistics, quantitative and qualitative data from students' anonymous final course evaluations and final reflection projects are evaluated.ResultsData suggests that students benefitted from their experience during this five-day course. Students provided feedback reinforcing the enjoyment and transformative outcomes gleaned from the course experiences. Students entered the course describing feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and overextended, not uncommon for learners in medical and dental school, and completed the course describing the acquisition of applicable skills, increased attention and mindfulness, creativity, and connection to the natural world.ConclusionsStudents described a positive experience of the course. Several areas of personal and professional development were also described, such as improvements within cognitive domains, enhanced connection with nature, others, and themselves, increased mindfulness, and overall improved well-being. Findings have implications for medical and dental programs on how such innovative training may lean into the work of nature-based care to provide for the whole person.

Project description:Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic limited pre-clinical medical students from participating in traditional clinical in-person shadowing. Rather than eliminating clinical shadowing from an established leadership course, we describe the experience of six pre-clinical medical students shadowing physician preceptors remotely through virtual platforms. Methods: Six pre-clinical medical students enrolled in 2020's Weill Cornell Medicine's Healthcare Leadership and Management Scholars Program were prepared with training materials for on-camera patient care. Students shadowed emergency medicine (EM) physicians providing clinical care in one of our New York Presbyterian emergency departments (EDs) and through telemedicine. Pre- and postsurveys were provided to these students. Results: From three different U.S. time zones, students were safely able to shadow EM physicians. The educational fidelity was maintained in physician-student relationships, but revealed opportunities for improvement in students' clinical learning, in ED clinical care, and in telemedicine visits. Conclusions: Virtual clinical shadowing is a viable option for pre-clinical students, when in-person options are not available. With logistical adjustments, this medium may be a long-term educational option especially for telemedicine.

Project description:Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are gaining popularity in education while classroom lectures are being deserted, especially after COVID-19 pandemic. Their added value in teaching undergraduate medical students remains to be confirmed. This study evaluated a MOOC devoted to undergraduate medical students in a blended oncology-teaching university program. It was the first to target undergraduate medical students in oncology at its beginning. Students were asked to participate in a survey before and after MOOC to explore interactions between their characteristics and final grades, 65% of the participating students belonged to the rich class. 70% of the students completed the MOOC. Grades distributions were similar before and after MOOC implementation, so MOOC doesn't alter overall results. In addition, there was a positive effect of the MOOC on median grades on the immediate test. The univariate and multivariate analysis showed that socioeconomic status and student's willingness to participate interacted significantly with final results. Particularly, students' motivation and satisfaction were associated with better results; Almost 70% of students asked for blended learning. E-learning is reliable to teach oncology to undergraduate medical students. The success is directly linked to students' willingness to participate, and can be improved using blended methods including tutorials.

Project description:BackgroundClinical training during the COVID-19 pandemic is high risk for medical students. Medical schools in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) have limited capacity to develop resources in the face of rapidly developing health emergencies. Here, a free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) was developed as a COVID-19 resource for medical students working in these settings, and its effectiveness was evaluated.MethodsThe RE-AIM (reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance) framework was utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of MOOC in teaching medical students about COVID-19. The data sources included the student registration forms, metrics quantifying their interactions within the modules, students' course feedback, and free-text responses. The data were collected from the Moodle learning management system and Google analytics from May 9 to September 15, 2020. The research team analyzed the quantitative data descriptively and the qualitative data thematically.ResultsAmong the 16,237 unique visitors who accessed the course, only 6031 medical students from 71 medical schools registered, and about 4993 (83% of registrants) completed the course, indicating high levels of satisfaction (M = 8.17, SD = 1.49) on a 10-point scale. The mean scores of each assessment modules were > 90%. The free-text responses from 987 unique students revealed a total of 17 themes (e.g., knowing the general information on COVID-19, process management of the pandemic in public health, online platform use, and instructional design) across the elements of the RE-AIM framework. Mainly, the students characterized the MOOC as well-organized and effective.ConclusionsMedical students learned about COVID-19 using a self-paced and unmonitored MOOC. MOOCs could play a vital role in the dissemination of accurate information to medical students in LMIC in future public health emergencies. The students were interested in using similar MOOCs in the future.

Project description:BackgroundDisaster medicine is a component of the German medical education since 2003. Nevertheless, studies have shown some inconsistencies within the implementation of the national curriculum, and limits in the number of students trained over the years. Recently, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and other disasters have called attention to the importance of training medical students in disaster medicine on a coordinated basis. The aim of this study is to present and evaluate the disaster medicine and humanitarian assistance course, which was developed in the University of Tübingen, Germany.MethodsThe University Clinic for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine in Tübingen expanded the existing curriculum of undergraduate disaster medicine training with fundamentals of humanitarian medicine, integrating distance learning, interactive teaching and simulation sessions in a 40 h course for third-, fourth- and fifth- year medical students. This prospective and cross-sectional study evaluates the Disaster Medicine and Humanitarian Assistance course carried out over five semesters during the period between 2018 and 2020. Three survey tools were used to assess participants' previous experiences and interest in the field of disaster medicine, to compare the subjective and objective level of knowledge before and after training, and to evaluate the course quality.ResultsThe total number of medical students attending the five courses was n = 102 of which n = 60 females (59%) and n = 42 males (41%). One hundred two students entered the mandatory knowledge assessment, with the rate of correct answers passing from 73.27% in the pre-test to 95.23% in the post-test (t [101] = 18.939, p < .001, d = 1.88). To determine the subjective perception of knowledge data were collected from 107 observations. Twenty-five did not complete the both questionnaires. Out of a remaining sample of 82 observations, the subjective perception of knowledge increased after the course (t [81] = 24.426, p < .001, d = 2.69), alongside with the interest in engaging in the field of disaster medicine (t [81] = 7.031, p < .001, d = .78). The 93.46% of the medical students (n = 100) graded the training received with an excellent overall score (1.01 out of 6).ConclusionThe study indicates a significant increase in students' understanding of disaster medicine using both subjective and objective measurements, as well as an increase interest in the field of disaster medicine and humanitarian assistance. Whereas former studies showed insufficient objective knowledge regarding disaster medical practices as well as subjective insecurities about their skills and knowledge to deal with disaster scenarios, the presented course seems to overcome these deficiencies preparing future physicians with the fundamentals of analysis and response to disasters. The development and successful implementation of this course is a first step towards fulfilling disaster medicine education requirements, appearing to address the deficiencies documented in previous studies. A possible adaptation with virtual reality approaches could expand access to a larger audience. Further effort must be made to develop also international training programs, which should be a mandatory component of medical schools' curricula.

Project description:IntroductionComputer-based e-learning modules have been shown to be an effective learning tool in medical education. However, readily available, interactive, computer-based modules specifically educating on the histology of the normal lymph node have not been developed.MethodsUsing Microsoft PowerPoint, I developed a macro-enabled slide show illustrating and describing the architectural, cytomorphologic, and immunophenotypic features of the normal lymph node. This resource can be made available to medical students and residents prior to their hematopathology service rotation, as well as during their rotation should they want to review the module. The tutorial is interactive, with mixed-media features, links to pre- and postquizzes, and an interactive quiz at the end to solidify understanding and address areas of confusion.ResultsAfter 1 year of elective implementation, eight out of 13 students chose to use the tutorial, four of whom gave formal feedback in the form of a survey and three verbal feedback. All feedback was positive, finding the tutorial a useful adjunct.DiscussionAlthough extensive implementation was limited given the small numbers that rotate through the hematopathology service on a yearly basis, an interactive, computer-based module was found helpful by the students in learning normal lymph node histology. This 1-year experience demonstrated that the normal lymph node tutorial can be used as an effective adjunct in educating pathology residents and medical students on normal lymph node cytomorphology and immunoarchitecture in the context of a busy clinical patient care setting. Continued learner feedback will be necessary to further enhance the quality of this platform for education.

Project description:IntroductionDoctors perform many clinical procedures throughout their careers. It is important for students to learn these procedures in a nonthreatening environment. This clinical procedures course introduces students to several basic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, both invasive and noninvasive. These include managing pediatric and adult airways, starting intravenous lines, inserting arterial and central lines, inserting Foley catheters and nasogastric tubes, and performing lumbar punctures and paracentesis.MethodsSmall-group teaching is used to achieve these objectives; over the course of 4 weeks, the medical students meet once a week for 4 hours. Each meeting includes teaching and demonstrations of the procedures by faculty instructors and residents. This is followed by practice of the procedures on mannequin simulators and partial task trainers by the students. Feedback is then given to the students by the instructors.ResultsBased on conversations during the feedback sessions, the students feel that the materials used in the course are helpful in learning these clinical procedures.DiscussionThe medical students feel that the course familiarizes them with clinical procedures they may be asked to perform on patients during their clinical rotations and postgraduate training.
