Spin Selectivity Damage Dependence of Adsorption of dsDNA on Ferromagnets.

ABSTRACT: The adsorption of oxidatively damaged DNA onto ferromagnetic substrates was investigated. Both confocal fluorescence microscopy and quartz crystal microbalance methods show that the adsorption rate and the coverage depend on the magnetization direction of the substrate and the position of the damage site on the DNA relative to the substrate. SQUID magnetometry measurements show that the subsequent magnetic susceptibility of the DNA-coated ferromagnetic film depends on the direction of the magnetic field that was applied to the ferromagnetic film as the molecules were adsorbed. This study reveals that (i) the spin and charge polarization in DNA molecules is changed significantly by oxidative damage in the G bases and (ii) the rate of adsorption on a ferromagnet, as a function of the direction of the magnetic dipole of the surface, can be used as an assay to detect oxidative damage in the DNA.

Spin Funneling for Enhanced Spin Injection into Ferromagnets.

Project description:It is well-established that high spin-orbit coupling (SOC) materials convert a charge current density into a spin current density which can be used to switch a magnet efficiently and there is increasing interest in identifying materials with large spin Hall angle for lower switching current. Using experimentally benchmarked models, we show that composite structures can be designed using existing spin Hall materials such that the effective spin Hall angle is larger by an order of magnitude. The basic idea is to funnel spins from a large area of spin Hall material into a small area of ferromagnet using a normal metal with large spin diffusion length and low resistivity like Cu or Al. We show that this approach is increasingly effective as magnets get smaller. We avoid unwanted charge current shunting by the low resistive NM layer utilizing the newly discovered phenomenon of pure spin conduction in ferromagnetic insulators via magnon diffusion. We provide a spin circuit model for magnon diffusion in FMI that is benchmarked against recent experiments and theory.

Coupled atomistic spin-lattice simulations of ultrafast demagnetization in 3d ferromagnets.

Project description:Despite decades of research, the role of the lattice and its coupling to the magnetisation during ultrafast demagnetisation processes is still not fully understood. Here we report on studies of both explicit and implicit lattice effects on laser induced ultrafast demagnetisation of bcc Fe and fcc Co. We do this using atomistic spin- and lattice dynamics simulations following a heat-conserving three-temperature model. We show that this type of Langevin-based simulation is able to reproduce observed trends of the ultrafast magnetization dynamics of fcc Co and bcc Fe. The parameters used in our models are all obtained from electronic structure theory, with the exception of the lattice dynamics damping term, where a range of parameters were investigated. It was found that while the explicit spin-lattice coupling in the studied systems does not impact the demagnetisation process notably, the lattice damping has a large influence on the details of the magnetization dynamics. The dynamics of Fe and Co following the absorption of a femtosecond laser pulse are compared with previous results for Ni and similarities and differences in the materials' behavior are analysed. For all elements investigated so far with this model, we obtain a linear relationship between the value of the maximally demagnetized state and the fluence of the laser pulse , which is in agreement with experiments. Moreover, we demonstrate that the demagnetization amplitude is largest for Ni and smallest for Co. This holds over a wide range of the reported electron-phonon couplings, and this demagnetization trend is in agreement with recent experiments.

Unusual Spin Polarization in the Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity.

Project description:Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) refers to the fact that electrons get spin polarized after passing through chiral molecules in a nanoscale transport device or in photoemission experiments. In CISS, chiral molecules are commonly believed to be a spin filter through which one favored spin transmits and the opposite spin gets reflected; that is, transmitted and reflected electrons exhibit opposite spin polarization. In this work, we point out that such a spin filter scenario contradicts the principle that equilibrium spin current must vanish. Instead, we find that both transmitted and reflected electrons present the same type of spin polarization, which is actually ubiquitous for a two-terminal device. More accurately, chiral molecules play the role of a spin polarizer rather than a spin filter. The direction of spin polarization is determined by the molecule chirality and the electron incident direction. And the magnitude of spin polarization relies on local spin-orbit coupling in the device. Our work brings a deeper understanding on CISS and interprets recent experiments, for example, the CISS-driven anomalous Hall effect.

Baby skyrmions in Chern ferromagnets and topological mechanism for spin-polaron formation in twisted bilayer graphene.

Project description:The advent of moiré materials has galvanized interest in the nature of charge carriers in topological bands. In contrast to conventional materials with electron-like charge carriers, topological bands allow for more exotic possibilities where charge is carried by nontrivial topological textures, such as skyrmions. However, the real-space description of skyrmions is ill-suited to address the limit of small skyrmions and to account for momentum-space band features. Here, we develop a momentum-space approach to study the formation of the smallest skyrmions - spin polarons, formed as bound states of an electron and a spin flip - in topological ferromagnets. We show that, quite generally, there is an attraction between an electron and a spin flip that is purely topological in origin, promoting the formation of spin polarons. Applying our results to twisted bilayer graphene, we identify a range of parameters where spin polarons are formed and discuss their possible experimental signatures.

X-ray and UV Radiation Damage of dsDNA/Protein Complexes.

Project description:Radiation and photodynamic therapies are used for cancer treatment by targeting DNA. However, efficiency is limited due to physico-chemical processes and the insensitivity of native nucleobases to damage. Thus, incorporation of radio- and photosensitizers into these therapies should increase both efficacy and the yield of DNA damage. To date, studies of sensitization processes have been performed on simple model systems, e.g., buffered solutions of dsDNA or sensitizers alone. To fully understand the sensitization processes and to be able to develop new efficient sensitizers in the future, well established model systems are necessary. In the cell environment, DNA tightly interacts with proteins and incorporating this interaction is necessary to fully understand the DNA sensitization process. In this work, we used dsDNA/protein complexes labeled with photo- and radiosensitizers and investigated degradation pathways using LC-MS and HPLC after X-ray or UV radiation.

Ultrafast Chiral Precession of Spin and Orbital Angular Momentum Induced by Circularly Polarized Laser Pulse in Elementary Ferromagnets.

Project description:Despite spin (SAM) and orbital (OAM) angular momentum dynamics being well-studied in demagnetization processes, their components receive less focus. Here, we utilize real-time time-dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT) to unveil significant x and y components of SAM and OAM induced by circularly left (σ+) and right (σ-) polarized laser pulses in ferromagnetic Fe, Co, and Ni. Our results show that the magnitude of the OAM is an order of magnitude larger than that of the SAM, highlighting a stronger optical response from the orbital degrees of freedom of electrons. Intriguingly, σ+ and σ- pulses induce chirality in the precession of SAM and OAM, respectively, with clear associations with laser frequency and duration. Finally, we demonstrate the time scale of the OAM and SAM precession occurs even earlier than that of the demagnetization process and the OISTR effect. Our results provide detailed insight into the dynamics of SAM and OAM during and shortly after a polarized laser pulse.

Driving the polar spin reorientation transition of ultrathin ferromagnets with antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition of nearby FeRh alloy film.

Project description:We show that in-plane to out-of-plane magnetization switching of a ferromagnetic layer can be driven by antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition in a nearby FeRh system. For FeRh/Au/FeAu trilayers, the impact of the magnetic phase transition of FeRh onto the perpendicular magnetization of monoatomic FeAu superlattices is transferred across the Au spacer layer via interlayer magnetic coupling. The polar spin reorientation process of the FeAu spins driven by the magnetic phase transition in the FeRh reveals its major features; namely it is reversible and displays hysteresis.

Fn14 Deficiency Ameliorates Anti-dsDNA IgG-Induced Glomerular Damage in SCID Mice.

Project description:Many studies have demonstrated that anti-dsDNA IgG is closely associated with lupus nephritis. Recently, it was found that activation of the fibroblast growth factor-inducible 14 (Fn14) signaling pathway damages glomerular filtration barrier in MRL/lpr lupus-prone mice. However, MRL/lpr mice have high titers of serum autoantibodies other than anti-dsDNA IgG. The aim of this study was to further explore the effect of Fn14 deficiency on anti-dsDNA IgG-induced glomerular damage in severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice that have no endogenous IgG. Fn14 deficiency was generated in SCID mice. The murine hybridoma cells producing control IgG or anti-dsDNA IgG were intraperitoneally injected into mice. In two weeks, the urine, serum, and kidney tissue samples were harvested from mice at sacrifice. It showed that the injection of anti-dsDNA IgG, but not control IgG hybridoma cells, induced proteinuria and glomerular damage in SCID mice. Between the wild-type (WT) and knockout (KO) mice injected with anti-dsDNA IgG hybridoma cells, the latter showed a decrease in both proteinuria and glomerular IgG deposition. The histopathological changes, inflammatory cell infiltration, and proinflammatory cytokine production were also attenuated in the kidneys of the Fn14-KO mice upon anti-dsDNA IgG injection. Therefore, Fn14 deficiency effectively protects SCID mice from anti-dsDNA IgG-induced glomerular damage.

Triplet Cooper pairs induced in diffusive s-wave superconductors interfaced with strongly spin-polarized magnetic insulators or half-metallic ferromagnets.

Project description:Interfacing superconductors with strongly spin-polarized magnetic materials opens the possibility to discover new spintronic devices in which spin-triplet Cooper pairs play a key role. Motivated by the recent derivation of spin-polarized quasiclassical boundary conditions capable of describing such a scenario in the diffusive limit, we consider the emergent physics in hybrid structures comprised of a conventional s-wave superconductor (e.g. Nb, Al) and either strongly spin-polarized ferromagnetic insulators (e.g. EuO, GdN) or halfmetallic ferromagnets (e.g. CrO2, LCMO). In contrast to most previous works, we focus on how the superconductor itself is influenced by the proximity effect, and how the generated triplet Cooper pairs manifest themselves in the self-consistently computed density of states (DOS) and the superconducting critical temperature T c . We provide a comprehensive treatment of how the superconductor and its properties are affected by the triplet pairs, demonstrating that our theory can reproduce the recent observation of an unusually large zero-energy peak in a superconductor interfaced with a half-metal, which even exceeds the normal-state DOS. We also discuss the recent observation of a large superconducting spin-valve effect with a T c change ~1 K in superconductor/half-metal structures, in which case our results indicate that the experiment cannot be explained fully by a long-ranged triplet proximity effect.

Aggregate Size Dependence of Amyloid Adsorption onto Charged Interfaces.

Project description:Amyloid aggregates are associated with a range of human neurodegenerative disorders, and it has been shown that neurotoxicity is dependent on aggregate size. Combining molecular simulation with analytical theory, a predictive model is proposed for the adsorption of amyloid aggregates onto oppositely charged surfaces, where the interaction is governed by an interplay between electrostatic attraction and entropic repulsion. Predictions are experimentally validated against quartz crystal microbalance-dissipation experiments of amyloid beta peptides and fragmented fibrils in the presence of a supported lipid bilayer. Assuming amyloids as rigid, elongated particles, we observe nonmonotonic trends for the extent of adsorption with respect to aggregate size and preferential adsorption of smaller aggregates over larger ones. Our findings describe a general phenomenon with implications for stiff polyions and rodlike particles that are electrostatically attracted to a surface.
