Soil bacteria can produce urease, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea to ammonia (NH<sub>3</sub>) and carbamate. A variety of urease inhibitors have been proposed to reduce NH<sub>3</sub> volatilization by interfering with the urease activity.
