Self-Powered Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Security Applications.

ABSTRACT: Valuable jewels, documents, and files left in hotel rooms by guests can be stolen at any time by an unauthorized person. This could have a serious psychological and economic impact on the guests. The house/hotel owners should make efforts to prevent theft from occurring. In this study, a self-powered sliding-mode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is used as a sensor on a drawer. It is fixed to the side of the drawer and works in the lateral sliding mode. The electricity generated by the device during the push-pull action of the draw is ~125 V and F~12.5 µA. An analysis of the electrical performance was carried out using PET, paper, and nitrile as sliding materials. The electrical output from the device is used to notify the guest or hotel owner of any theft by an unidentified individual via Arduino and node MCU devices. Finally, this device can be helpful at night and can be extended using different materials.

Eye motion triggered self-powered mechnosensational communication system using triboelectric nanogenerator.

Project description:Mechnosensational human-machine interfaces (HMIs) can greatly extend communication channels between human and external devices in a natural way. The mechnosensational HMIs based on biopotential signals have been developing slowly owing to the low signal-to-noise ratio and poor stability. In eye motions, the corneal-retinal potential caused by hyperpolarization and depolarization is very weak. However, the mechanical micromotion of the skin around the corners of eyes has never been considered as a good trigger signal source. We report a novel triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based micromotion sensor enabled by the coupling of triboelectricity and electrostatic induction. By using an indium tin oxide electrode and two opposite tribomaterials, the proposed flexible and transparent sensor is capable of effectively capturing eye blink motion with a super-high signal level (~750 mV) compared with the traditional electrooculogram approach (~1 mV). The sensor is fixed on a pair of glasses and applied in two real-time mechnosensational HMIs-the smart home control system and the wireless hands-free typing system with advantages of super-high sensitivity, stability, easy operation, and low cost. This TENG-based micromotion sensor is distinct and unique in its fundamental mechanism, which provides a novel design concept for intelligent sensor technique and shows great potential application in mechnosensational HMIs.

A Self-Powered Vector Angle/Displacement Sensor Based on Triboelectric Nanogenerator.

Project description:Recently, grating-structured triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) operating in freestanding mode have been the subject of intensive research. However, standard TENGs based on interdigital electrode structures are unable to realize real-time sensing of the direction of the freestanding electrode movement. Here, a newly designed TENG, consisting of one group of grating freestanding electrodes and three groups of interdigitated induction electrodes with the identical period, has been demonstrated as a self-powered vector angle/displacement sensor (SPVS), capable of distinguishing the real-time direction of the freestanding electrode displacement. Thanks to the unique coupling effect between triboelectrification and electrostatic induction, periodic alternating voltage signals are generated in response to the rotation/sliding movement of the top freestanding electrodes on the bottom electrodes. The output peak-to-peak voltage of the SPVS can reach as high as 300 V at the rotation rate of 48 rpm and at the sliding velocity of 0.1 m/s, respectively. The resolution of the sensor reaches 8°/5 mm and can be further enhanced by decreasing the width of the electrodes. This present work not only demonstrates a novel method for angle/displacement detection but also greatly expands the applicability of TENG as self-powered vector sensors.

Flexible and Wearable PDMS-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Self-Powered Tactile Sensing.

Project description:Flexible electronics devices with tactile perception can sense the mechanical property data of the environment and the human body, and they present a huge potential in the human health system. In particular, the introduction of ultra-flexible and self-powered characteristics to tactile sensors can effectively reduce the problems caused by rigid batteries. Herein, we report a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), mainly consisting of an ultra-flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film with micro-pyramid-structure and sputtered aluminum electrodes, which achieves highly conformal contact with skin and the self-powered detection of human body motions. The flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film was selected as spacer layer, which made the sensor work in the contact-separation mode and endowed the perfect coupling of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction. Moreover, the controllable and uniform micro-structure PDMS film was fabricated by using the micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) manufacturing process, bringing a good sensitivity and high output performance to the device. The developed TENG can directly convert mechanical energy into electric energy and light up 110 green Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Furthermore, the TENG-based sensor displays good sensitivity (2.54 V/kPa), excellent linearity (R2 = 0.99522) and good stability (over 30,000 cycles). By virtue of the compact size, great electrical properties, and great mechanical properties, the developed sensor can be conformally attached to human skin to monitor joint movements, presenting a promising application in wearable tactile devices. We believe that the ultra-flexible and self-powered tactile TENG-based sensor could have tremendous application in wearable electrons.

Instantaneous Self-Powered Sensing System Based on Planar-Structured Rotary Triboelectric Nanogenerator.

Project description:Self-powering electronics by harvesting mechanical energy has been widely studied, but most self-powering processes require a long time in the energy harvesting procedure, resulting in low efficiency or even system failure in some specific applications such as instantaneous sensor signal acquisition and transmission. In order to achieve efficient self-powered sensing, we design and construct an instantaneous self-powered sensing system, which puts heavy requirements on generator's power and power management circuit. Theoretical analysis and experimental results over two types of generators prove that the planar-structured rotary triboelectric nanogenerator possesses many advantages over electromagnetic generator for the circumstances of instantaneous self-powering. In addition, an instantaneous driving mode power management circuit is also introduced showing advanced performance for the instantaneous self-powering sensing system. As a proof-of-concept, an integrated instantaneous self-powered sensing system is demonstrated based on Radio-Frequency transmission. This work demonstrates the potential of instantaneous self-powered sensing systems to be used in a wide range of applications such as smart home, environment monitoring, and security surveillance.

Self-Powered Room-Temperature Ethanol Sensor Based on Brush-Shaped Triboelectric Nanogenerator.

Project description:Highly sensitive ethanol sensors have been widely utilized in environmental protection, industrial monitoring, and drink-driving tests. In this work, a fully self-powered ethanol detector operating at room temperature has been developed based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). The gas-sensitive oxide semiconductor is selected as the sensory component for the ethanol detection, while the resistance change of the oxide semiconductor can well match the "linear" region of the load characteristic curve of TENG. Hence, the output signal of TENG can directly reveal the concentration change of ethanol gas. An accelerator gearbox is applied to support the operation of the TENG, and the concentration change of ethanol gas can be visualized on the Liquid Crystal Display. This fully self-powered ethanol detector has excellent durability, low fabrication cost, and high selectivity of 5 ppm. Therefore, the ethanol detector based on TENG not only provides a different approach for the gas detection but also further demonstrates the application potential of TENG for various sensory devices.

Omnidirectional Triboelectric Nanogenerator Operated by Weak Wind Towards a Self-Powered Anemoscope.

Project description:Wind is a great sustainable energy source for harvesting due to its abundant characteristic. Typically, large space, loud noise, and heavy equipment are essential for a general wind power plant and it is solely operated by big-scale wind. However, wind energy can be efficiently harvested by utilizing the triboelectric nanogenerator due to its abundance, ubiquity, and environmentally friendliness. Furthermore, a few previously reported wind-driven triboelectric nanogenerators, which have the bulk fluttering layer by wind, still show difficulty in generating electricity under the conditions of weak wind because of the static friction arisen from the inherent structure. In this case, the output performance is deteriorated as well as the generator cannot operate completely. In this work, a wind-driven triboelectric nanogenerator (wind-TENG) based on the fluttering of the PTFE strips is proposed to solve the aforementioned problems. At the minimum operating wind pressure of 0.05 MPa, this wind-driven TENG delivers the open-circuit voltage of 3.5 V, short-circuit current of 300 nA, and the associated output power density of 0.64 mW/m2 at the external load resistance of 5 MΩ. Such conditions can be used to light up seven LEDs. Moreover, this wind-TENG has been utilized as a direction sensor which can sense the direction at which the wind is applied. This work thus provides the potential application of the wind-TENG as both self-driven electronics and a self-powered sensor system for detecting the direction under environmental wind.

Stretchable Woven Fabric-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Energy Harvesting and Self-Powered Sensing.

Project description:With the triboelectric nanogenerator developing in recent years, it has gradually become a promising alternative to fossil energy and batteries. Its rapid advancements also promote the combination of triboelectric nanogenerators and textiles. However, the limited stretchability of fabric-based triboelectric nanogenerators hindered their development in wearable electronic devices. Here, in combination with the polyamide (PA) conductive yarn, polyester multifilament, and polyurethane yarn, a highly stretchable woven fabric-based triboelectric nanogenerator (SWF-TENG) with the three elementary weaves is developed. Different from the normal woven fabric without elasticity, the loom tension of the elastic warp yarn is much larger than non-elastic warp yarn in the weaving process, which results in the high elasticity of the woven fabric coming from the loom. Based on the unique and creative woven method, SWF-TENGs are qualified with excellent stretchability (up to 300%), flexibility, comfortability, and excellent mechanical stability. It also exhibits good sensitivity and fast responsibility to the external tensile strain, which can be used as a bend-stretch sensor to detect and identify human gait. Its collected power under pressure mode is capable of lighting up 34 light-emitting diodes (LEDs) by only hand-tapping the fabric. SWF-TENG can be mass-manufactured by using the weaving machine, which decreases fabricating costs and accelerates industrialization. Based on these merits, this work provides a promising direction toward stretchable fabric-based TENGs with wide applications in wearable electronics, including energy harvesting and self-powered sensing.

All in One, Self-Powered Bionic Artificial Nerve Based on a Triboelectric Nanogenerator.

Project description:Sensory and nerve systems play important role in mediating the interactions with the world. The pursuit of neuromorphic computing has inspired innovations in artificial sensory and nervous systems. Here, an all-in-one, tailorable artificial perception, and transmission nerve (APTN) was developed for mimicking the biological sensory and nervous ability to detect and transmit the location information of mechanical stimulation. The APTN shows excellent reliability with a single triboelectric electrode for the detection of multiple pixels, by employing a gradient thickness dielectric layer and a grid surface structure. The sliding mode is used on the APTN to eliminate the amplitude influence of output signal, such as force, interlayer distance. By tailoring the geometry, an L-shaped APTN is demonstrated for the application of single-electrode bionic artificial nerve for 2D detection. In addition, an APTN based prosthetic arm is also fabricated to biomimetically identify and transmit the stimuli location signal to pattern the feedback. With features of low-cost, easy installation, and good flexibility, the APTN renders as a promising artificial sensory and nervous system for artificial intelligence, human-machine interface, and robotics applications.

Self-Powered Bio-Inspired Spider-Net-Coding Interface Using Single-Electrode Triboelectric Nanogenerator.

Project description:Human-machine interfaces are essential components between various human and machine interactions such as entertainment, robotics control, smart home, virtual/augmented reality, etc. Recently, various triboelectric-based interfaces have been developed toward flexible wearable and battery-less applications. However, most of them exhibit complicated structures and a large number of electrodes for multidirectional control. Herein, a bio-inspired spider-net-coding (BISNC) interface with great flexibility, scalability, and single-electrode output is proposed, through connecting information-coding electrodes into a single triboelectric electrode. Two types of coding designs are investigated, i.e., information coding by large/small electrode width (L/S coding) and information coding with/without electrode at a predefined position (0/1 coding). The BISNC interface shows high scalability with a single electrode for detection and/or control of multiple directions, by detecting different output signal patterns. In addition, it also has excellent reliability and robustness in actual usage scenarios, since recognition of signal patterns is in regardless of absolute amplitude and thereby not affected by sliding speed/force, humidity, etc. Based on the spider-net-coding concept, single-electrode interfaces for multidirectional 3D control, security code systems, and flexible wearable electronics are successfully developed, indicating the great potentials of this technology in diversified applications such as human-machine interaction, virtual/augmented reality, security, robotics, Internet of Things, etc.

Self-Powered Intelligent Water Droplet Monitoring Sensor Based on Solid-Liquid Triboelectric Nanogenerator.

Project description:Real-time monitoring of rainwater is a critical issue in the development of autonomous vehicles and smart homes, while the corresponding sensors play a pivotal role in ensuring their sensitivity. Here, we study a self-powered intelligent water droplet monitoring sensor based on a solid-liquid triboelectric nanogenerator (SL-TENG). The sensor comprises a SL-TENG, a signal acquisition module, a central processing unit (CPU), and a wireless transmission module, facilitating the real-time monitoring of water droplet signals. It is worth noting that the SL-TENG has self-powering characteristics and can convert the kinetic energy of water droplets into electrical energy. The excellent output performance, with open-circuit voltage of 9 V and short-circuit current of 2 μA without any treatment of the SL-TENG, can provide an effective solution to the problem that traditional sensor need battery replacement. In addition, the SL-TENG can generate stable amplitude electrical signals through water droplets, exemplified by the absence of decay in a short-circuit current within 7 days. More importantly, the sensor is equipped with intelligent analytical capabilities, allowing it to assess rainfall based on variables such as amplitude and frequency. Due to its excellent stability and intelligent analysis, this sensor can be used for roof rainwater monitoring, intravenous administration monitoring, and especially in automobile automatic wipers and other fields.
