Project description:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is being studied for a wide range of applications including lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts. In this paper, we present a single-step nonthermal plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process for the production of two-dimensional MoS2. This method provides an alternative route to established CVD and plasma synthesis routes. The approach presented here synthesizes films in only a few minutes using elemental sulfur (S8) and molybdenum pentachloride (MoCl5) as precursors. Deposition utilizes a nonthermal inductively coupled plasma reactor and temperatures around 500 °C. Film growth characteristics and nucleation are studied as a function of precursor concentrations, argon flow rate, plasma power, and deposition time. Few-layer two-dimensional (MoS2) films were formed at low precursor concentrations. Films with nanoparticle-like features were formed when the precursor concentration was high. Noncontinuous nonstoichiometric films were found at low plasma power, while high plasma power led to continuous films with good stoichiometry. The vacancies and defects in these films may provide active sites for hydrogen evolution.

Project description:Graphene-boron nitride monolayer heterostructures contain adjacent electrically active and insulating regions in a continuous, single-atom thick layer. To date structures were grown at low pressure, resulting in irregular shapes and edge direction, so studies of the graphene-boron nitride interface were restricted to the microscopy of nanodomains. Here we report templated growth of single crystalline hexagonal boron nitride directly from the oriented edge of hexagonal graphene flakes by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition, and physical property measurements that inform the design of in-plane hybrid electronics. Ribbons of boron nitride monolayer were grown from the edge of a graphene template and inherited its crystallographic orientation. The relative sharpness of the interface was tuned through control of growth conditions. Frequent tearing at the graphene-boron nitride interface was observed, so density functional theory was used to determine that the nitrogen-terminated interface was prone to instability during cool down. The electronic functionality of monolayer heterostructures was demonstrated through fabrication of field effect transistors with boron nitride as an in-plane gate dielectric.

Project description:Binary and ternary oxynitride solid alloys were studied extensively in the past decade due to their wide spectrum of applications, as well as their peculiar characteristics when compared to their bulk counterparts. Direct bottom-up synthesis of one-dimensional oxynitrides through solution-based routes cannot be realized because nitridation strategies are limited to high-temperature solid-state ammonolysis. Further, the facile fabrication of oxynitride thin films through vapor phase strategies has remained extremely challenging due to the low vapor pressure of gaseous building blocks at atmospheric pressure. Here, we present a direct and scalable catalytic vapor-liquid-solid epitaxy (VLSE) route for the fabrication of oxynitride solid solution nanowires from their oxide precursors through enhancing the local mass transfer flux of vapor deposition. For the model oxynitride material, we investigated the fabrication of gallium nitride and zinc oxide oxynitride solid solution (GaN:ZnO) thin film. GaN:ZnO nanowires were synthesized directly at atmospheric pressure, unlike the methods reported in the literature, which involved multiple-step processing and/or vacuum operating conditions. Moreover, the dimensions (i.e., diameters and length) of the synthesized nanowires were tailored within a wide range.

Project description:In the 2D material framework, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) was originally studied as an archetypical transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) material. The controlled synthesis of large-area and high-crystalline MoS2 remains a challenge for distinct practical applications from electronics to electrocatalysis. Among the proposed methods, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a promising way for synthesizing high-quality MoS2 from isolated domains to a continuous film because of its high flexibility. Herein, we report on a systematic study of the effects of growth pressure, temperature, time, and vertical height between the molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) source and the substrate during the CVD process that influence the morphology, domain size, and uniformity of thickness with controlled parameters over a large scale. The substrate was pretreated with perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid tetrapotassium salt (PTAS) seed molecule that promoted the layer growth of MoS2. Further, we characterized the as-grown MoS2 morphologies, layer quality, and physical properties by employing scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL). Our experimental findings demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of the CVD approach to synthesize MoS2 for various target applications.

Project description:There is significant interest in synthesizing large-area graphene films at low temperatures by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) for nanoelectronic and flexible device applications. However, to date, low-temperature CVD methods have suffered from lower surface coverage because micro-sized graphene flakes are produced. Here, we demonstrate a modified CVD technique for the production of large-area, continuous monolayer graphene films from benzene on Cu at 100-300 °C at ambient pressure. In this method, we extended the graphene growth step in the absence of residual oxidizing species by introducing pumping and purging cycles prior to growth. This led to continuous monolayer graphene films with full surface coverage and excellent quality, which were comparable to those achieved with high-temperature CVD; for example, the surface coverage, transmittance, and carrier mobilities of the graphene grown at 300 °C were 100%, 97.6%, and 1,900-2,500 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), respectively. In addition, the growth temperature was substantially reduced to as low as 100 °C, which is the lowest temperature reported to date for pristine graphene produced by CVD. Our modified CVD method is expected to allow the direct growth of graphene in device manufacturing processes for practical applications while keeping underlying devices intact.

Project description:In this work, the effect of plasma on the chemistry and morphology of coatings deposited by Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (AP-PECVD) is investigated. To do so, plasma deposited amorphous titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films are compared to thin films deposited using Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition (AP-CVD) not involving the use of plasma. We focus here on the effect and the interest of plasma in the AP-PECVD process over AP-CVD for low substrate temperature deposition. The advantages of AP-PECVD over AP-CVD are often suggested in many articles however no direct evidence of the role of the plasma for TiO2 deposition at atmospheric pressure was reported. Hence, herein, the deposition via both methods is directly compared by depositing coatings with and without plasma using the same CVD reactor. Through the control of the plasma parameters, we are able to form low carbon coatings at low temperature with a deposition rate twice faster than AP-CVD, clearly showing the interest of plasma. Plasma enhanced methods are promising for the deposition of coatings at industrial scale over large surface and at high rate.

Project description:Two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has attracted significant attention for next-generation electronics, flexible devices, and optical applications. Chemical vapor deposition is the most promising route for the production of large-scale, high-quality MoS2 films. Recently, the chemical vapor deposition of MoS2 films on soda-lime glass has attracted great attention due to its low cost, fast growth, and large domain size. Typically, a piece of Mo foil or graphite needs to be used as a buffer layer between the glass substrates and the CVD system to prevent the glass substrates from being fragmented. In this study, a novel method was developed for synthesizing MoS2 on glass substrates. Inert Al2O3 was used as the buffer layer and high-quality, uniform, triangular monolayer MoS2 crystals with domain sizes larger than 400 μm were obtained. To demonstrate the advantages of glass/Al2O3 substrates, a direct comparison of CVD MoS2 on glass/Mo and glass/Al2O3 substrates was performed. When Mo foil was used as the buffer layer, serried small bilayer islands and bright core centers could be observed on the MoS2 domains at the center and edges of glass substrates. As a control, uniform MoS2 crystals were obtained when Al2O3 was used as the buffer layer, both at the center and the edge of glass substrates. Raman and PL spectra were further characterized to show the merit of glass/Al2O3 substrates. In addition, the thickness of MoS2 domains was confirmed by an atomic force microscope and the uniformity of MoS2 domains was verified by Raman mapping. This work provides a novel method for CVD MoS2 growth on soda-lime glass and is helpful in realizing commercial applications of MoS2.

Project description:The neutral, distorted octahedral complex [TiCl4(Se n Bu2)2] (1), prepared from the reaction of TiCl4 with the neutral Se n Bu2 in a 1:2 ratio and characterized by IR and multinuclear (1H, 13C{1H}, 77Se{1H}) NMR spectroscopy and microanalysis, serves as an efficient single-source precursor for low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) of titanium diselenide, TiSe2, films onto SiO2 and TiN substrates. X-ray diffraction patterns on the deposited films are consistent with single-phase, hexagonal 1T-TiSe2 (P3̅m1), with evidence of some preferred orientation of the crystallites in thicker films. The composition and structural morphology was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray, and Raman spectroscopy. SEM imaging shows hexagonal plate crystallites growing perpendicular to the substrate, but these tend to align parallel to the surface when the quantity of reagent is reduced. The resistivity of the crystalline TiSe2 films is 3.36 ± 0.05 × 10-3 Ω·cm with a carrier density of 1 × 1022 cm-3. Very highly selective film growth from the reagent was observed onto photolithographically patterned substrates, with film growth strongly preferred onto the conducting TiN surfaces of SiO2/TiN patterned substrates. TiSe2 is selectively deposited within the smallest 2 μm diameter TiN holes of the patterned TiN/SiO2 substrates. The variation in crystallite size with different diameter holes is determined by microfocus X-ray diffraction and SEM, revealing that the dimensions increase with the hole size, but that the thickness of the crystals stops increasing above ∼20 μm hole size, whereas their lengths/widths continue to increase.

Project description:Monoclinic vanadium(IV) oxide (VO2) has been widely studied for energy-efficient glazing applications because of its thermochromic properties, displaying a large change in transmission of near-IR wavelengths between the hot and cold states. The optimization of the reaction between VCl4 and ethyl acetate via atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) was shown to produce thin films of monoclinic VO2 with excellent thermochromic properties (ΔT sol = 12%). The tailoring of the thermochromic and visible light transmission was shown to be possible by altering the density and morphology of the deposited films. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic-force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ellipsometry, and UV-vis spectrometry. This article provides useful design rules for the synthesis of high-quality VO2 thin films by APCVD.
