Subjective consistency increases trust.

ABSTRACT: Trust is foundational for social relations. Current psychological models focus on specific evaluative and descriptive content underlying initial impressions of trustworthiness. Two experiments investigated whether trust also depends on subjective consistency-a sense of fit between elements. Experiment 1 examined how consistency of simple verbal characterizations influences trust judgments. Experiment 2 examined how incidental visual consistency impacts trust judgments and economic decisions reflecting trust. Both experiments show that subjective consistency positively and uniquely predicts trust judgments and economic behavior. Critically, subjective consistency is a unique predictor of trust that is irreducible to the content of individual elements, either on the dimension of trust or the dimension of valence. These results show that trust impressions are not a simple sum of the contributing parts, but reflect a "gestalt". The results fit current frameworks emphasizing the role of predictive coding and coherence in social cognition.

Personal trust increases cooperation beyond general trust.

Project description:In this paper we present a new methodology which, while allowing for anonymous interaction, it also makes possible to compare decisions of cooperating or defecting when playing games within a group, according to whether or not players personally trust each other. The design thus goes beyond standard approaches to the role of trust in fostering cooperation, which is restricted to general trust. It also allows considering the role of the topology of the social network involved may play in the level of cooperation found. The results of this work support the idea that personal trust promotes cooperation beyond the level of general trust. We also found that this effect carries over to the whole group, making it more cohesive, but that higher levels of cohesion rely on a particular topology. As a conclusion, we hypothesize that personal trust is a psychological mechanism evolved to make human social life possible in the small groups our ancestors lived in, and that this mechanism persists and plays a role in sustaining cooperation and social cohesion.

Evaluating the Consistency of Subjective Activity Assessments and Their Relation to Cognition in Older Adults.

Project description:(1) Background: Research examining whether activity engagement is related to cognitive functioning in older adults has been limited to using retrospective reports of activity which may be affected by biases. This study compared two measurements (estimated weekly versus reported daily), and whether these activity assessments were related to cognition in older adults; (2) Methods: Participants from US (n = 199) and Australian (n = 170) samples completed a weekly estimate of activity, followed by 7 consecutive days of daily reporting. Differences between weekly estimates and daily reports were found, such that estimations at the weekly level were lower than self-reported daily information. Multivariate multiple regression was used to determine whether total activity, activity domains and the discrepancy between assessment types (i.e., weekly/daily) predicted cognitive performance across three cognitive domains (fluid, verbal, memory); (3) Results: When activity assessments were totaled, neither predicted cognition; however, when activity was grouped by domain (cognitive, social, physical), different domains predicted different cognitive outcomes. Daily reported cognitive activity significantly predicted verbal performance (β = 1.63, p = 0.005), while weekly estimated social activity predicted memory performance (β = -1.81, p = 0.050). Further, while the magnitude of discrepancy in total activity did not significantly predict cognitive performance, domain specific differences did. Differences in physical activity reported across assessments predicted fluid performance (β = -1.16, p = 0.033); (4) Conclusions: The significant discrepancy between the measurement types shows that it is important to recognize potential biases in responding when conducting activity and cognition research.

The effect of subjective understanding on patients' trust in AI pharmacy intravenous admixture services.

Project description:IntroductionMedical services are getting automated and intelligent. An emerging medical service is the AI pharmacy intravenous admixture service (PIVAS) that prepares infusions through robots. However, patients may distrust these robots. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the psychological mechanism of patients' trust in AI PIVAS.MethodsWe conducted one field study and four experimental studies to test our hypotheses. Study 1 and 2 investigated patients' trust of AI PIVAS. Study 3 and 4 examined the effect of subjective understanding on trust in AI PIVAS. Study 5 examined the moderating effect of informed consent.ResultsThe results indicated that patients' reluctance to trust AI PIVAS (Studies 1-2) stems from their lack of subjective understanding (Study 3). Particularly, patients have an illusion of understanding humans and difficulty in understanding AI (Study 4). In addition, informed consent emerges as a moderating factor, which improves patients' subjective understanding of AI PIVAS, thereby increasing their trust (Study 5).DiscussionThe study contributes to the literature on algorithm aversion and cognitive psychology by providing insights into the mechanisms and boundary conditions of trust in the context of AI PIVAS. Findings suggest that medical service providers should explain the criteria or process to improve patients' subjective understanding of medical AI, thus increasing the trust in algorithm-based services.

Political probity increases trust in government: Evidence from randomized survey experiments.

Project description:Low levels of trust in government have potentially wide-ranging implications for governing stability, popular legitimacy, and political participation. Although there is a rich normative and empiricial literature on the important consequences of eroding trust in democratic societies, the causes of political trust are less clear. In this article we estimate the effect that changing Americans' views about the perceived honesty and integrity of political authorities (or "political probity") has on their trust in government using randomized survey experiments. In one experiment on a convenience sample and a direct replication on a more representative sample, we find that a single Op-Ed article about political probity increased trust in government by an amount larger than the partisan gap between Democrats and Republicans. These results complement prior observational studies on trust in government by demonstrating that political probity plays an important causal role in shaping Americans' judgments about the trustworthiness of their government and politicians.

The effect of uncertainty communication on public trust depends on belief<i>-</i>evidence consistency.

Project description:Not everyone perceives the communication of uncertainty about scientific evidence as equally trustworthy. We examine whether these differences in trust can be explained by people's prior beliefs-specifically, the consistency between those beliefs and the evidence presented. We hypothesize that the more consistent the evidence is with people's prior beliefs, the less people will trust both the information and its source when uncertainty is communicated compared with when it is not communicated. Conversely, the less consistent the evidence is with people's prior beliefs, the more people will trust the information and its source when uncertainty is communicated. We tested this crossover interaction in two preregistered online experiments on COVID-19 vaccines (study 1: n = 600) and changes in extreme weather events (study 2: n = 1,001). In both studies, participants rated their prior beliefs on these topics before being randomly assigned to read one of two contrasting evidence conditions, with uncertainty either communicated or not in each condition. The belief-evidence consistency was operationalized by linking people's prior belief scores to the contrasting evidence conditions. We found evidence for our hypothesis for both topics and across people with opposing beliefs. Our results show that people's trust response to the communication of uncertainty depends on how consistent people's beliefs are with the evidence communicated. Furthermore, the effects of uncertainty communication on trust appeared to be independent from its effects on people's subsequent beliefs, with no evidence of polarization in either trust or belief. Implications are discussed.

Bilingualism increases neural response consistency and attentional control: evidence for sensory and cognitive coupling.

Project description:Auditory processing is presumed to be influenced by cognitive processes - including attentional control - in a top-down manner. In bilinguals, activation of both languages during daily communication hones inhibitory skills, which subsequently bolster attentional control. We hypothesize that the heightened attentional demands of bilingual communication strengthens connections between cognitive (i.e., attentional control) and auditory processing, leading to greater across-trial consistency in the auditory evoked response (i.e., neural consistency) in bilinguals. To assess this, we collected passively-elicited auditory evoked responses to the syllable [da] in adolescent Spanish-English bilinguals and English monolinguals and separately obtained measures of attentional control and language ability. Bilinguals demonstrated enhanced attentional control and more consistent brainstem and cortical responses. In bilinguals, but not monolinguals, brainstem consistency tracked with language proficiency and attentional control. We interpret these enhancements in neural consistency as the outcome of strengthened attentional control that emerged from experience communicating in two languages.

Paranoia and conspiracy: group cohesion increases harmful intent attribution in the Trust Game.

Project description:Current theories argue that hyper-sensitisation of social threat perception is central to paranoia. Affected people often also report misperceptions of group cohesion (conspiracy) but little is known about the cognitive mechanisms underpinning this conspiracy thinking in live interactions. In a pre-registered experimental study, we used a large-scale game theory approach (N > 1,000) to test whether the social cohesion of an opposing group affects paranoid attributions in a mixed online and lab-based sample. Participants spanning the full population distribution of paranoia played as proposers in a modified Trust Game: they were allocated a bonus and chose how much money to send to a pair of responders which was quadrupled before reaching these responders. Responders decided how much to return to the proposers through the same process. Participants played in one of two conditions: against a cohesive group who communicated and arrived at a joint decision, or a non-cohesive group who made independent decisions. After the exchange, proposers rated the extent to which the responders' decisions were driven by (i) self-interest and (ii) intent to harm. Although the true motives are ambiguous, cohesive responders were reliably rated by participants as being more strongly motivated by intent to harm, indicating that group cohesion affects social threat perception. Highly paranoid participants attributed harmful intent more strongly overall but were equally reactive to social cohesion as other participants. This suggests that paranoia involves a generally lowered threshold for social threat detection but with an intact sensitivity for cohesion-related group characteristics.

Transparent communication about negative features of COVID-19 vaccines decreases acceptance but increases trust.

Project description:During the rapid development and rolling out of vaccines against COVID-19, researchers have called for an approach of "radical transparency," in which vaccine information is transparently disclosed to the public, even if negative information can decrease vaccine uptake. Consistent with theories about the psychology of conspiracy beliefs, these calls predict that a lack of transparency may reduce trust in health authorities and may facilitate the spread of conspiracy theories, which may limit the long-term capabilities of health authorities during and after the pandemic. On the basis of preregistered experiments conducted on large, representative samples of Americans and Danes (N > 13,000), the current study contrasts the effects of vague vaccine communication with transparent communication, which discloses either positive or negative vaccine features. The evidence demonstrates that transparent negative communication may indeed harm vaccine acceptance here and now but that it increases trust in health authorities. Furthermore, the alternative of vague, reassuring communication does not increase vaccine acceptance either and leads to both lower trust and higher endorsement of conspiracy theories.
