Project description:Lithium stripping is a crucial process coupled with lithium deposition during the cycling of Li metal batteries. Lithium deposition has been widely studied, whereas stripping as a subsurface process has rarely been investigated. Here we reveal the fundamental mechanism of stripping on lithium by visualizing the interface between stripped lithium and the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). We observed nanovoids formed between lithium and the SEI layer after stripping, which are attributed to the accumulation of lithium metal vacancies. High-rate dissolution of lithium causes vigorous growth and subsequent aggregation of voids, followed by the collapse of the SEI layer, i.e., pitting. We systematically measured the lithium polarization behavior during stripping and find that the lithium cation diffusion through the SEI layer is the rate-determining step. Nonuniform sites on typical lithium surfaces, such as grain boundaries and slip lines, greatly accelerated the local dissolution of lithium. The deeper understanding of this buried interface stripping process provides beneficial clues for future lithium anode and electrolyte design.

Project description:Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) engineering is an efficient approach to enhancing the cycling performance of lithium metal batteries. Lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) is a popular electrolyte salt. Mechanistic insights into its degradation pathways near the lithium metal anode are critical in modifying the battery electrolyte and SEI. In this work, we elucidate plausible reaction pathways in multiple representative electrolyte systems. Through ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, lithiation and electron transfer are identified as the triggering factors for LiPF6 degradation. Meanwhile, we find that lithium morphology and charge distribution substantially impact the interfacial dissociation pathways. Thermodynamic evaluation of the solvation effects shows that higher electrolyte dielectric constant and lithiation extent profoundly assist the LiPF6 decomposition. These findings offer quantitative thermodynamic and electronic structure information, which promotes rational SEI engineering and electrolyte tuning for lithium metal anode performance enhancement.

Project description:Metallic zinc electrode with a high theoretical capacity of 820 mAh g-1 is highly considered as a promising candidate for next-generation rechargeable batteries. However, the unavoidable hydrogen evolution, uncontrolled dendrite growth, and severe passivation reaction badly hinder its practical implementations. Herein, a robust polymer-alloy artificial protective layer is designed to realize dendrite-free Zn metal anode by the integration of zincophilic SnSb nanoparticles with Nafion. In comparison to the bare Zn electrode, the Nafion-SnSb coated Zn (NFSS@Zn) electrode exhibits lower nucleation energy barrier, more uniform electric field distribution and stronger anti-corrosion capability, thus availably suppressing the Zn dendrite growth and interfacial side reactions. As a consequence, the NFSS@Zn electrode exhibits a long cycle life over 1500 h at 1 mA cm-2 with an ultra-low voltage hysteresis (25 mV). Meanwhile, when paired with a MnO2 cathode, the as-prepared full cell also demonstrates stable performance for 1000 cycles at 3 A g-1 . This work provides an inspired approach to boost the performance of Zn anodes.

Project description:The inner Helmholtz plane and thus derived solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) are crucial interfacial structure to determine the electrochemical stability of Zn-ion battery (ZIB). In this work, we demonstrate that introducing β-cyclodextrins (CD) as anion-receptors into Zn(OTf)2 aqueous electrolyte could significantly optimize the Zn anode SEI structure for achieving stable ZIB. Specifically, β-CD with macrocyclic structure holds appropriate cavity size and charge distribution to encase OTf- anions at the Zn metal surface to form β-CD@OTf- dominated inner Helmholtz structure. Meanwhile, the electrochemically triggered β-CD@OTf- decomposition could in situ convert to the organic-inorganic hybrid SEI (ZnF2/ZnCO3/ZnS‒(C-O-C/*CF/*CF3)), which could efficiently hinder the Zn dendrite growth with maintain the proper SEI mechanical strength stability to guarantee the long-term stability. The thus-derived Zn | |Zn pouch cell (21 cm2 size) with β-CD-containing electrolyte exhibits a cumulative capacity of 6450 mAh-2 cm-2 at conditions of 10 mAh cm-2 high areal capacity. This work gives insights for reaching stable ZIB via electrolyte additive triggered SEI structure regulation.

Project description:The overall electrochemical performance of natural graphite is intimately associated with the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer developed on its surface. To suppress the interfacial electrolyte decomposition reactions and the high irreversible capacity loss relating to the SEI formation on a natural graphite (NG) surface, we propose a new design of the artificial SEI by the functional molecular cross-linking framework layer, which was synthesized by grafting acrylic acid (AA) and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) via an in situ polymerization reaction. The functional polymeric framework constructs a robust covalent bonding onto the NG surface with -COOH and facilitates Li+ conduction owing to the effect of the -CONH group, contributing to forming an SEI layer of excellent stability, flexibility, and compactness. From all the benefits, the initial coulombic efficiency, rate performance, and cycling performance of the graphite anode are remarkably improved. In addition, the full cell using the LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cathode against the modified NG anode exhibits much-prolonged cycle life with a capacity retention of 82.75% after 500 cycles, significantly higher than the cell using the pristine NG anode. The mechanisms relating to the artificial SEI growth on the graphite surface were analyzed. This strategy provides an efficient and feasible approach to the surface optimization for the NG anode in LIBs.

Project description:Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are extensively employed in various fields. Nonetheless, LIBs utilizing ethylene carbonate (EC)-based electrolytes incur capacity degradation in a wide-temperature range, which is attributable to the slow Li+ transfer kinetics at low temperatures and solvent decomposition during high-rate cycling at high temperatures. Here, we designed a novel electrolyte by substituting nitrile solvents for EC, characterized by low de-solvation energy and high ionic conductivity. The correlation between the carbon chain length of nitrile solvents with reduction stability and the Li+-solvated coordination was investigated. The results revealed that the valeronitrile (VN) solvent displayed an enhanced lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level and low de-solvation energy, which helped construct robust SEI interfacial layers and improved kinetics of interfacial ion transfer in wide-temperature LIBs. The VN-based electrolyte employed in graphite‖NCM523 pouch cells achieved a discharge capacity of 89.84% at a 20C rate at room temperature. Meanwhile, the cell exhibited 3C rate cycling stability even at a high temperature of 55 °C. Notably, the VN-based electrolyte exhibited a high ionic conductivity of 1.585 mS cm-1 at -50 °C. The discharge capacity of pouch cells retained 75.52% and 65.12% of their room temperature capacity at -40 °C and -50 °C, respectively. Wide-temperature-range batteries with VN-based electrolytes have the potential to be applied in various extreme environments.

Project description:To reliably operate anode-less solid-state Li metal batteries, wherein precipitated Li acts as the anode, stabilizing the interface between the solid electrolyte and electrode is crucial. The interface can be controlled by a metal interlayer on the electrolyte to form a Li alloy buffer that facilitates stable Li plating/stripping, thereby mitigating the loss of physical contact and preventing short circuits. However, the mechanism governing stable Li plating/stripping in the metal interlayer without degrading battery materials remains unclear owing to an incomplete understanding of the dynamic and complex electrochemical reactions in the solid state. Through multiple operando and post-mortem analyses of the Li deposition behavior in the morphology, chemistry and microstructure, a close correlation is found between the Li-metal alloying process with the microstructural evolution and electrochemical performance when Ag, Au, Zn, and Cu interlayers were adopted on the garnet-type solid electrolyte Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12. The Ag interlayer improved the interfacial stability enabled by Ag-dissolved Li, which inhibited dendritic growth, passing through the phase-separated Li-Ag alloy microstructure, while the other metals did not because of the Li plating at the Li-metal alloy/solid electrolyte interface. This work provides fundamental guidance for material selection and interface design, advancing the development of anode-less solid-state batteries.

Project description:Lithium metal is a promising anode candidate for the next-generation rechargeable battery due to its highest specific capacity (3860 mA h g-1) and lowest potential, but low Coulombic efficiency and formation of lithium dendrites hinder its practical application. Here, we report a self-formed flexible hybrid solid-electrolyte interphase layer through co-deposition of organosulfides/organopolysulfides and inorganic lithium salts using sulfur-containing polymers as an additive in the electrolyte. The organosulfides/organopolysulfides serve as "plasticizer" in the solid-electrolyte interphase layer to improve its mechanical flexibility and toughness. The as-formed robust solid-electrolyte interphase layers enable dendrite-free lithium deposition and significantly improve Coulombic efficiency (99% over 400 cycles at a current density of 2 mA cm-2). A lithium-sulfur battery based on this strategy exhibits long cycling life (1000 cycles) and good capacity retention. This study reveals an avenue to effectively fabricate stable solid-electrolyte interphase layer for solving the issues associated with lithium metal anodes.The practical application of lithium metal anodes suffers from the poor Coulombic efficiency and growth of lithium dendrites. Here, the authors report an approach to enable the self-formation of stable and flexible solid-electrolyte interphase layers which serve to address both issues.

Project description:Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are receiving great interest because their high mechanical strength and transference number could potentially suppress Li dendrites and their high electrochemical stability allows the use of high-voltage cathodes, which enhances the energy density and safety of batteries. However, the much lower critical current density and easier Li dendrite propagation in SSEs than in nonaqueous liquid electrolytes hindered their possible applications. Herein, we successfully suppressed Li dendrite growth in SSEs by in situ forming an LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) between the SSEs and the Li metal. The LiF-rich SEI successfully suppresses the penetration of Li dendrites into SSEs, while the low electronic conductivity and the intrinsic electrochemical stability of LiF block side reactions between the SSEs and Li. The LiF-rich SEI enhances the room temperature critical current density of Li3PS4 to a record-high value of >2 mA cm-2. Moreover, the Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency was escalated from 88% of pristine Li3PS4 to more than 98% for LiF-coated Li3PS4. In situ formation of electronic insulating LiF-rich SEI provides an effective way to prevent Li dendrites in the SSEs, constituting a substantial leap toward the practical applications of next-generation high-energy solid-state Li metal batteries.
