The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a major cell compartment where protein synthesis, folding, and posttranslational modifications occur with assistance from a wide variety of chaperones and enzymes. Quality control systems selectively eliminate abnormal proteins that accumulate inside the ER due to cellular stresses.
