<i>Neisseria gonorrhoeae</i> causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea. The treatment of gonorrhoea is becoming increasingly challenging, as <i>N. gonorrhoeae</i> has developed resistance to antimicrobial agents routinely used in the clinic.
