The various functions of skeletal muscle (movement, respiration, thermogenesis, etc.) require the presence of oxygen (O<sub>2</sub>). Inadequate O<sub>2</sub> bioavailability (ie, hypoxia) is detrimental to muscle function and, in chronic cases, can result in muscle wasting.
