Dataset on nurses' knowledge, attitude and practice in pressure injury prevention at Sabah, Malaysia.

ABSTRACT: Pressure injuries are a significant problem in healthcare, and understanding the knowledge and practices of nurses in this area is critical to improving patient outcomes. This article presents dataset concerning a survey conducted to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of pressure injury prevention and care among nurses in public hospitals in the West Coast division of Sabah, Malaysia. The study involved 448 nurses who completed a structured questionnaire between April and December 2021, using the Malay version of the Pieper-Zulkowski-Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Test (PZ-PUKT) 2016 questionnaire. The questionnaire included socio-demographic information and three outcome measures related to pressure injury prevention. Quantitative descriptive statistical analysis was used to analyze the survey results. The data suggest that this survey provides insights into nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding pressure injury prevention and could inform the development of interventions to improve the prevention and management of pressure injuries in public hospitals.

Project description:BackgroundPressure injuries (PIs) remain a significant public health concern due to their high prevalence among critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). Despite advancements in science and technology related to PI prevention, the prevalence continues to rise. A key factor contributing to this rise is inadequate knowledge and limited use of evidence-based practices by nurses, resulting in prolonged hospital stays and poor patient outcomes. This study aimed to determine the knowledge of intensive care nurses regarding pressure injury prevention.MethodsA descriptive cross-sectional design was used to collect data from 101 nurses working in four ICUs at an academic hospital in Gauteng Province, South Africa. The revised Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Assessment Tool (PUKAT 2.0) was utilized to gather data from a convenience sample of intensive care nurses. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyze the data, with statistical tests including the Shapiro-Wilk test, univariate and multivariate linear regression, and Cronbach's alpha coefficient tests. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.ResultsThe mean knowledge score of the nurses (N = 101) was 42.16% (SD 12.09), indicating poor knowledge of PI prevention. The lowest scores were observed in the areas of "prevention of pressure injuries" (25%) and "classification and observation" (39.5%). Higher levels of education (14.00; 95% CI 2.90-25.11; p = 0.014), seniority (15.58; 95% CI 2.92-28.24; p = 0.016), and years of experience (6.38; 95% CI 9.70-5.45; p = 0.039) were statistically significant predictors of better prevention and management of PI.ConclusionThe findings of this study demonstrate that intensive care nurses have poor knowledge of prevention measures, classification, and observation of stages. This may hinder their ability to effectively utilize risk assessment tools in clinical practice. Improving training and providing intensive care nurses with adequate information about evidence-based practices to prevent PI could strengthen their contribution to patient safety. These findings underscore the need for continuous, mandatory training programs for intensive care nurses to stay updated with the latest evidence and practices in PI prevention.

Project description:BackgroundVenous thromboembolism (VTE) is a severe preventable complication among ophthalmic surgical patients. The knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of nurses play a key role in effective VTE prevention. However, little is known about the KAP of ophthalmic nurses' VTE prevention. This study aimed to examine the level of KAP toward VTE prevention among Chinese ophthalmic nurses and to investigate the influencing factors of their VTE practice.MethodsA total of 610 ophthalmic nurses from 17 cities in Hunan and Zhejiang Provinces, China, participated in this study. Data was collected via the Sojump online platform from March to April 2021. A self-administered VTE questionnaire was developed to assess nurses' KAP toward VTE prevention. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the influencing factors of ophthalmic nurses' VTE prevention practice.ResultsThe scores (correct rates) of ophthalmic nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice were 103.87 ± 20.50 (76.4%), 21.96 ± 2.72, and 48.96 ± 11.23 (81.6%), respectively. The three lowest-scored knowledge items were related to VTE complications, physical prevention, and risk assessment. The three lowest-scored attitude items were related to nurses' training, VTE risk, and patient education. The three lowest-scored practice items were related to the assessment scale, VTE assessment, and patient education. Nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice were significantly correlated with each other. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that Hunan Province (B = 2.77, p = 0.006), general hospital (B = 2.97, p = 0.009), outpatient department (B = 3.93, p = 0.021), inpatient department (B = 2.50, p = 0.001), previous VTE prevention training (B = 3.46, p < 0.001), VTE prevention management in hospital (B = 4.93, p < 0.001), better knowledge (B = 0.04, p = 0.038), and positive attitude towards VTE prevention (B = 1.35, p < 0.001) were all significantly and positively associated with higher practice scores in VTE prevention.ConclusionsOur study provided a comprehensive understanding of the ophthalmic nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice in VTE prevention, as well as identified specific items in each dimension for improvement. In addition, our study showed multiple factors were associated with ophthalmic nurses' practice in VTE prevention, including environmental factors, training and management, knowledge and attitudes toward VTE prevention. Our findings provide important implications and guidance for future intervention programs to improve the ophthalmic nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice in VTE prevention.

Project description:BackgroundFrailty is a leading risk factor of falls, incapacitation, functional decline, and even death in aging populations globally. Clinical nurses play pivotal roles in screening, prevention, and intervention to reverse or slow the progression of frailty. The present study aimed to (1) understand the extent and influencing factors of knowledge, attitudes, and practices of clinical nurses for managing frailty, (2) elucidate the relationships of the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of clinical nurses for frailty management.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April 2024 on 524 clinical nurses in a tertiary hospital in Zhejiang Province, China. The survey instruments included a questionnaire inquiring about the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of nurses in terms of frailty management, a demographic data form, and a self-designed frailty educational information questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, univariate analysis, multiple linear regression, and structural equation modeling.ResultsOf 524 nurses, Only 37.2% were rated as good in terms of knowledge, attitude, and practice of frailty management, while 55.7% were rated as moderate. Among them, the proportion of nurses with good knowledge (10.3%) and practical skills (13.4%) is much lower than their attitude (65.3%). Structural equation modeling found that knowledge and attitudes were related to frailty management practices, with significant associations between knowledge and practices(β = 0.499, p < 0.001). Of the total effect size of knowledge influencing practice (total effect = 0.624, 95% CI: 0.455,0.791), approximately 20.0% was mediated by attitudes (indirect effect = 0.125, 95% CI: 0.076,0.187). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that age, organizational support, familiarity with relevant guidelines, familiar with the term frailty, and department all had a significant effect on the total score(adjusted R2 = 0.264, p < 0.001).ConclusionsDespite inadequate knowledge and limited experience in frailty management, clinical nurses' attitudes towards frailty management were positive, indicating potential for improvement. The model was useful to explain practices in frailty management, thereby providing a theoretical basis for development of targeted training programs.Clinical trial numberNot applicable.

Project description:IntroductionDuring the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the use of virtual consultations has accelerated to ensure continued access to healthcare despite lockdowns and physical distancing measures. We aimed to determine the knowledge (awareness) of, attitude (acceptability) to, and practice (exposure) [KAP] of virtual consultations (VC), the demographic factors associated with poor KAP, and the correlation between the three KAP domains.MethodsA cross-sectional study, using a convenience sampling technique, was conducted from 13 September, 2021 to 28 November, 2021. We designed a 45-item VC KAP questionnaire. This was distributed to outpatient users attending cardiovascular, dermatology, geriatrics, haematology, endocrine, respiratory, gastroenterology, rheumatology, or neurology clinics at the University Malaya Medical Centre. It was completed during face-to-face, online, or telephone interviews. The data were analysed using SPSS version 24.0. Binary logistic regression was used to determine the demographic factors associated with KAP. Correlation between KAP domains was determined using Spearman's rho (r). A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.ResultsA total of 366 questionnaires were completed. Knowledge (awareness), attitude (acceptability), and practice (exposure) were considered good in 69.7%, 80.9%, and 24.6% of participants, respectively. There were no significant relationships between age, gender, ethnicity, and duration of hospital attendance (years) with knowledge (awareness), attitude (acceptability), and practice (exposure). A moderate positive correlation was seen between knowledge (awareness) and attitude (acceptability) (Attitude total [Atotal]) (r = 0.48, p<0.001), with no significant correlation between knowledge (awareness) and practice (exposure) (r = 0.04, p = 0.45), and attitude (acceptability) (Atotal) and practice (r = 0.01, p = 0.82).ConclusionOverall, outpatient clinic users had good knowledge (awareness) of and were receptive towards VC but had poor practice (exposure). More opportunities for VC use in healthcare can increase exposure and subsequent utilisation. Interventions to increase the effectiveness of VC use should be explored in future studies.
