Project description:Data-driven optimal structure exploration has become a hot topic in materials for energy-related devices. However, this method is still challenging due to the insufficient prediction accuracy of material properties and large exploration space for candidate structures. We propose a data trend analysis system for materials using quantum-inspired annealing. Structure-property relationships are learned by a hybrid decision tree and quadratic regression algorithm. Then, ideal solutions to maximize the property are explored by a Fujitsu Digital Annealer, which is unique hardware that can quickly extract promising solutions from the ample search space. The system's validity is investigated with an experimental study examining solid polymer electrolytes as potential components for solid-state lithium-ion batteries. A new trithiocarbonate polymer electrolyte offers a conductivity of 10-6 S cm-1 at room temperature, even though it is in a glassy state. Molecular design through data science will enable accelerated exploration of functional materials for energy-related devices.

Project description:Lithium-metal electrodes are promising for developing next-generation lithium-based batteries with high energy densities. However, their implementation is severely limited by dendritic growth during battery cycling, which eventually short-circuits the battery. Replacing conventional liquid electrolytes with solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) can suppress dendritic growth. Unfortunately, in SPEs the high stiffness required for suppressing dendrites comes at the expense of efficient lithium-ion transport. Some polymer-based composite electrolytes, however, enable the decoupling of stiffness and ionic conductivity. This study introduces a composite SPE comprised of a relatively soft poly(ethylene oxide-co-epichlorohydrin) (EO-co-EPI) statistical copolymer with high ionic conductivity and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), a filler with extraordinary stiffness sourced from abundant cellulose. CNF-reinforcement of EO-co-EPI increases the storage modulus up to three orders of magnitude while essentially maintaining the SPE's high ionic conductivity. The composite SPE exhibits good cycling ability and electrochemical stability, demonstrating its utility in lithium metal batteries.

Project description:A viscous feature is beneficial for a solid electrolyte with respect to assembling solid-state batteries, which can change the solid-solid contacts from point to face. Here, novel halide-based deep eutectic solid electrolytes (DESEs) prepared by a facile ball milling method is reported. The mixture of halides triggers the deep eutectic phenomena by intermolecular interactions, leading to diverse morphologies and viscous statuses in terms of composition. Chemical- and micro-structure analyses via the cryogenic technique reveal that the LiCl and LiF nanoparticles are dispersed in an amorphous halide matrix, which endow freely mobile ions for fast ion transport. The optimized DESE thus achieves low activation energy and high ionic conductivity of 16 mS cm-1 at room temperature, one of the highest values among various electrolytes so far. By integrating with the active materials to form a composite cathode, the viscous DESE yields a super-dense composite pellet which possesses intensively enhanced ionic conductivity in contrast to those formed by the sulfide-based electrolyte additives, demonstrating an attractive application prospect.

Project description:Solid-state sodium ion batteries are frequently referred to as the most promising technology for next-generation energy storage applications. However, developing a suitable solid electrolyte with high ionic conductivity, excellent electrolyte-electrode interfaces, and a wide electrochemical stability window, remains a major challenge. Although solid-polymer electrolytes have attracted great interest due to their low cost, low density and very good processability, they generally have significantly lower ionic conductivity and poor mechanical strength. Here, we report on the development of a low-cost composite solid polymer electrolyte comprised of poly(ethylene oxide), poly(vinylpyrrolidone) and sodium hexafluorophosphate, mixed with indium arsenide nanowires. We show that the addition of 1.0% by weight of indium arsenide nanowires increases the sodium ion conductivity in the polymer to 1.50 × 10-4 Scm-1 at 40 °C. In order to explain this remarkable characteristic, we propose a new transport model in which sodium ions hop between close-spaced defect sites present on the surface of the nanowires, forming an effective complex conductive percolation network. Our work represents a significant advance in the development of novel solid polymer electrolytes with embedded engineered ultrafast 1D percolation networks for near-future generations of low-cost, high-performance batteries with excellent energy storage capabilities.

Project description:The increasing demand for safe and high-energy-density battery systems has led to intense research into solid electrolytes for rechargeable batteries. One of these solid electrolytes is the NASICON-type Li1+xAlxTi2-x(PO4)3 (LATP) material. In this study, different boron compounds (10% B2O3 doped, 10% H3BO3 doped, and 5% B2O3 + 5% H3BO3 doped) were doped at total 10 wt.% into the Ti4+ sites of an LATP solid electrolyte to investigate the structural properties and ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes using the solid-state synthesis method. Characterization of the synthesized samples was conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The XRD patterns of the boron-doped LATP (LABTP) samples show that the samples have a rhombohedral phase with space group R3¯c together and low amounts of impurity phases. While all the LABTP samples exhibited similar ionic conductivity values of around 10-4 S cm-1, the LABTP2 sample doped with 10 wt.% H3BO3 demonstrated the highest ionic conductivity. These findings suggest that varying B3+ ion doping strategies in LATP can significantly advance the development of solid electrolytes for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Solid composite electrolytes have gained increased attention, thanks to the improved safety, the prolonged service life, and the effective suppression on the lithium dendrites. However, a low ionic conductivity (<10-5 S cm-1) of solid composite electrolytes at room temperature needs to be greatly enhanced. In this work, we employ natural halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to fabricate composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs). CPE-5 (HNTs 5 wt%) shows an ionic conductivity of ∼3.5 × 10-4 S cm-1, which is ∼10 times higher than the CPE-0 (without the addition of HNTs) at 30 °C. The greatly increased ionic conductivity is attributed to the negatively-charged outer surface and a high specific surface area of HNTs, which facilitates the migration of Li+ in PVDF. To make a further illustration, a solid-state lithium-ion battery with CPE-5 electrolyte, LiMn2O4 cathode and Li metal anode was fabricated. An initial discharge capacity of ∼71.9 mA h g-1 at 30 °C in 1C is obtained, and after 250 cycles, the capacity of 73.5 mA h g-1 is still maintained. This study suggests that a composite polymer electrolyte with high conductivity can be realized by introducing natural HNTs, and can be potentially applied in solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Novel electrolytes are required for the commercialization of batteries with high energy densities such as lithium metal batteries. Recently, fluoroether solvents have become promising electrolyte candidates because they yield appreciable ionic conductivities, high oxidative stability, and enable high Coulombic efficiencies for lithium metal cycling. However, reported fluoroether electrolytes have similar molecular structures, and the influence of ion solvation in modifying electrolyte properties has not been elucidated. In this work, we synthesize a group of fluoroether compounds with reversed building block connectivity where ether moieties are sandwiched by fluorinated end groups. These compounds can support ionic conductivities as high as 1.3 mS/cm (30 °C, 1 M salt concentration). Remarkably, we report that the oxidative stability of these electrolytes increases with decreasing fluorine content, a phenomenon not observed in other fluoroethers. Using Raman and other spectroscopic techniques, we show that lithium ion solvation is controlled by fluoroether molecular structure, and the oxidative stability correlates with the "free solvent" fraction. Finally, we show that these electrolytes can be cycled repeatedly with lithium metal and other battery chemistries. Understanding the impact of building block connectivity and ionic solvation structure on electrochemical phenomena will facilitate the development of novel electrolytes for next-generation batteries.

Project description:The transition to solid-state Li-ion batteries will enable progress toward energy densities of 1000 W·hour/liter and beyond. Composites of a mesoporous oxide matrix filled with nonvolatile ionic liquid electrolyte fillers have been explored as a solid electrolyte option. However, the simple confinement of electrolyte solutions inside nanometer-sized pores leads to lower ion conductivity as viscosity increases. Here, we demonstrate that the Li-ion conductivity of nanocomposites consisting of a mesoporous silica monolith with an ionic liquid electrolyte filler can be several times higher than that of the pure ionic liquid electrolyte through the introduction of an interfacial ice layer. Strong adsorption and ordering of the ionic liquid molecules render them immobile and solid-like as for the interfacial ice layer itself. The dipole over the adsorbate mesophase layer results in solvation of the Li+ ions for enhanced conduction. The demonstrated principle of ion conduction enhancement can be applied to different ion systems.

Project description:BackgroundIncreasingly biological text mining research is focusing on the extraction of complex relationships relevant to the construction and curation of biological networks and pathways. However, one important category of pathway - metabolic pathways - has been largely neglected.Here we present a relatively simple method for extracting metabolic reaction information from free text that scores different permutations of assigned entities (enzymes and metabolites) within a given sentence based on the presence and location of stemmed keywords. This method extends an approach that has proved effective in the context of the extraction of protein-protein interactions.ResultsWhen evaluated on a set of manually-curated metabolic pathways using standard performance criteria, our method performs surprisingly well. Precision and recall rates are comparable to those previously achieved for the well-known protein-protein interaction extraction task.ConclusionsWe conclude that automated metabolic pathway construction is more tractable than has often been assumed, and that (as in the case of protein-protein interaction extraction) relatively simple text-mining approaches can prove surprisingly effective. It is hoped that these results will provide an impetus to further research and act as a useful benchmark for judging the performance of more sophisticated methods that are yet to be developed.

Project description:Various overoxidized poly(1H-pyrrole) (PPy), poly(N-methylpyrrole) (PMePy) or poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) membranes incorporated into an acrylate-based solid polymer electrolyte matrix (SPE) were directly electrosynthesized by a two-step in situ procedure. The aim was to extend and improve fundamental properties of pure SPE materials. The polymer matrix is based on the cross-linking of glycerol propoxylate (1PO/OH) triacrylate (GPTA) with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) as a conducting salt. A self-standing and flexible polymer electrolyte film is formed during the UV-induced photopolymerization of the acrylate precursors, followed by an electrochemical polymerization of the conducting polymers to form a 3D-IPN. The electrical conductivity of the conducting polymer is destroyed by electrochemical overoxidation in order to convert the conducting polymer into an ion-exchange membrane by introduction of electron-rich groups onto polymer units. The resulting polymer films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The results of this study show that the combination of a polyacrylate-matrix with ion selective properties of overoxidized CPs leads to new 3D materials with higher ionic conductivity than SPEs and separator or selective ion-exchange membrane properties with good stability by facile fabrication.
