Metal-Free Organic Radical Spin Source.

ABSTRACT: Organic radicals have long been suggested as candidates for organic magnets and components in organic spintronic devices. Herein, we demonstrate spin current emission from an organic radical film via spin pumping at room temperature. We present the synthesis and the thin film preparation of a Blatter-type radical with outstanding stability and low roughness. These features enable the fabrication of a radical/ferromagnet bilayer, in which the spin current emission from the organic radical layer can be reversibly reduced when the ferromagnetic film is brought into simultaneous resonance with the radical. The results provide an experimental demonstration of a metal-free organic radical layer operating as a spin source, opening a new avenue for the development of purely organic spintronic devices and bridging the gap between potential and real applications.

Efficient metal free organic radical scintillators.

Project description:The development of high-performance metal-free organic X-ray scintillators (OXSTs), characterized by a synergistic combination of robust X-ray absorption, efficient exciton utilization, and short luminescence lifetimes, poses a considerable challenge. Here we present an effective strategy for achieving augmented X-ray scintillation through the utilization of halogenated open-shell organic radical scintillators. Our experimental results demonstrate that the synthesized scintillators exhibit strong X-ray absorption derived from halogen atoms, display efficacious X-ray stability, and theoretically achieve 100% exciton utilization efficiency with a short lifetime (∼18 ns) due to spin-allowed doublet transitions. The superior X-ray scintillation performance exhibited by these organic radicals is not only exploitable in X-ray radiography for contrast imaging of various objects but also applicable in a medical high-resolution micro-computer-tomography system for the clear visualization of fibrous veins within a bamboo stick. Our study substantiates the promise of organic radicals as prospective candidates for OXSTs, offering valuable insights and a roadmap for the development of advanced organic radical scintillators geared towards achieving high-quality X-ray radiography.

Metal Organic Spin Transistor.

Project description:Organic molecules and specifically bio-organic systems are attractive for applications due to their low cost, variability, environmental friendliness, and facile manufacturing in a bottom-up fashion. However, due to their relatively low conductivity, their actual application is very limited. Chiral metallo-bio-organic crystals, on the other hand, have improved conduction and in addition interesting magnetic properties. We developed a spin transistor using these crystals and based on the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect. This device features a memristor type behavior, which depend on trapping both charges and spins. The spin properties are monitored by Hall signal and by an external magnetic field. The spin transistor exhibits nonlinear drain-source currents, with multilevel controlled states generated by the magnetization of the source. Varying the source magnetization enables a six-level readout for the two-terminal device. The simplicity of the device paves the way for its technological application in organic electronics and bioelectronics.

MOF/polymer hybrids through <i>in situ</i> free radical polymerization in metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:We use the free radical polymerization initiator 4,4'-azobis(cyanovaleric acid) coordinated to the open metal sites of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to give rise to highly uniform MOF/polymer hybrids. We demonstrate this strategy on two robust zirconium MOFs (NU-1000 and MOF-808), which are the most effective catalysts for degradation of chemical warfare nerve agents. The resulting hybrid materials maintain their hydrolytic catalytic activity and have substantially improved adhesion to polypropylene and activated carbon textile fibers, yielding highly robust MOF/polymer/textile hybrid systems. These composites are suitable for the green production of active protective clothing and filters capable of detoxifying organophosphorus warfare agents.

Radical Covalent Organic Frameworks Associated with Liquid Na-K toward Dendrite-Free Alkali Metal Anodes.

Project description:Liquid sodium-potassium (Na-K) alloy has the characteristics of high abundance, low redox potential, high capacity, and no dendrites, which has become an ideal alternative material for potassium/sodium metal anodes. However, the high surface tension of liquid sodium potassium alloy at room temperature makes it inconvenient in practical use. Here, the Na-K as reducing agent treats with hydrazone linkages of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and obtain the carbon-oxygen radical COFs (COR-Tf-DHzDM-COFs). The preparation method solves the problems that the preparation process of the traditional Na-K composite anode is complex and has high cost. The structures of the COR-Tf-DHzDM-COFs are characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and solid-state NMR measurements. It is the first time that carbon-oxygen radical COFs from bulk COFs are constructed by one-step method and the operation is flexible, convenient, and high rate of quality, which is suitable for big production and widely used. The cycle stability of the composite Na-K anode is improved, which provides a new idea for the design of high-performance liquid metal anode.

Spin Excitations of High Spin Iron(II) in Metal-Organic Chains on Metal and Superconductor.

Project description:Many-body interactions in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are fundamental for emergent quantum physics. Unlike their solution counterpart, magnetization at surfaces in low-dimensional analogues is strongly influenced by magnetic anisotropy (MA) induced by the substrate and still not well understood. Here, on-surface coordination chemistry is used to synthesize on Ag(111) and superconducting Pb(111) an iron-based spin chain by using pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (PTO) precursors as ligands. Using low-temperature scanning probe microscopy, their structures and low-energy spin excitations of coordinated Fe atoms are compared with high S = 2 spin-state. Although the chain and coordination centers are identical on both substrates, the long-range spin-spin coupling due to a superexchange through the ligand on Ag is not experimentally observed on Pb(111). This reduction of spin-spin interactions on Pb in tunneling spectra is ascribed to the depletion of electronic states around the Fermi level of the Pb(111) superconductor as compared to silver.

Diaryliodonium salts facilitate metal-free mechanoredox free radical polymerizations.

Project description:Mechanically-induced redox processes offer a promising alternative to more conventional thermal and photochemical synthetic methods. For macromolecule synthesis, current methods utilize sensitive transition metal additives and suffer from background reactivity. Alternative methodology will offer exquisite control over these stimuli-induced mechanoredox reactions to couple force with redox-driven chemical transformations. Herein, we present the iodonium-initiated free-radical polymerization of (meth)acrylate monomers under ultrasonic irradiation and ball-milling conditions. We explore the kinetic and structural consequences of these complementary mechanical inputs to access high molecular weight polymers. This methodology will undoubtedly find broad utility across stimuli-controlled polymerization reactions and adaptive material design.

Superoxide free radical spin-lattice relaxivity: A quench-assisted MR study.

Project description:PurposeQuEnch-assiSTed (QUEST) MRI provides a unique biomarker of excessive production of paramagnetic free radicals (oxidative stress) in vivo. The contribution from superoxide, a common upstream species found in oxidative stress-based disease, to the QUEST metric is unclear. Here, we begin to address this question by measuring superoxide spin-lattice relaxivity (r1) in phantoms.MethodsStable superoxide free radicals were generated in water phantoms of potassium superoxide ( KO2) . To measure r1, 1/T1 of different concentration solutions of KO2 in the presence and absence of the antioxidant superoxide dismutase were measured. The 1/T1 confounding factors including acquisition sequence, pH, and water source were also evaluated.ResultsThe T1 -weighted signal intensity increased with KO2 concentration. No contribution from pH, or reaction products other than superoxide, noted on 1/T1 . Superoxide r1 was measured to be 0.29 mM-1 s-1 , in agreement with that reported for paramagnetic molecular oxygen and nitroxide free radicals.ConclusionOur first-in-kind measurement of superoxide free radical r1 suggests a detection sensitivity of QUEST MRI on the order of tens of μM, within the reported level of free radical production during oxidative stress in vivo. Similar studies for other common free radicals are needed.

Exploring Spin-Phonon Coupling in Magnetic 2D Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Layered magnetic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an emerging class of materials that can combine the advantages of both MOFs and 2D magnetic crystals. The recent discovery of large coercivity and long-range magnetic ordering up to 515 K in a layered MOF of general formula MCl2(pyz)2 (M = transition metal, pyz = pyrazine) offers an exciting versatile platform to achieve high-TC magnetism at the 2D limit. In this work, we investigate the exfoliation feasibility down to the monolayer of VCl2(pyz)2 and CrCl2(pyz)2 by means of first-principles calculations. We explore their structural, electronic, magnetic and vibrational properties, as well as the effect of halide substitution. Then, we provide a full analysis of the spin-phonon coupling (SPC) in both 2D derivatives. Our calculations reveal a low SPC and thermal evolution of the magnetic exchange interactions and single-ion anisotropy mainly governed by low-frequency phonon modes. Finally, we provide chemical insights to improve the performance of these magnetic 2D MOFs based on the effective manipulation of the phonon modes that can present a major impact on their magnetic properties.

Exchange Bias in a Layered Metal-Organic Topological Spin Glass.

Project description:The discovery of conductive and magnetic two-dimensional (2D) materials is critical for the development of next generation spintronics devices. Coordination chemistry in particular represents a highly versatile, though underutilized, route toward the synthesis of such materials with designer lattices. Here, we report the synthesis of a conductive, layered 2D metal-organic kagome lattice, Mn3(C6S6), using mild solution-phase chemistry. Strong geometric spin frustration in this system mediates spin freezing at low temperatures, which results in glassy magnetic dynamics consistent with a rare geometrically frustrated (topological) spin glass. Notably, we show that this geometric frustration engenders a large, tunable exchange bias of 1625 Oe in Mn3(C6S6), providing the first example of exchange bias in a coordination solid or a topological spin glass. Exchange bias is a critical component in a number of spintronics applications, but it is difficult to rationally tune, as it typically arises due to structural disorder. This work outlines a new strategy for engineering exchange bias systems using single-phase, crystalline lattices. More generally, these results demonstrate the potential utility of geometric frustration in the design of new nanoscale spintronic materials.

Metal-Free Radical Borylation of Alkyl and Aryl Iodides.

Project description:A metal-free radical borylation of alkyl and aryl iodides with bis(catecholato)diboron (B2 cat2 ) as the boron source under mild conditions is introduced. The borylation reaction is operationally easy to conduct and shows high functional group tolerance and broad substrate scope. Radical clock experiments and density functional theory calculations provide insights into the mechanism and rate constants for C-radical borylation with B2 cat2 are disclosed.
