PET Waste Recycling into BTX Fraction Using In Situ Obtained Nickel Phosphide.

ABSTRACT: The annual production of plastic waste is a serious ecological problem as it causes substantial pollution of the environment. Polyethylene terephthalate, a material usually found in disposable plastic bottles, is one of the most popular material used for packaging in the world. In this paper, it is proposed to recycle polyethylene terephthalate waste bottles into benzene-toluene-xylene fraction using a heterogeneous nickel phosphide catalyst formed in situ during the polyethylene terephthalate recycling process. The catalyst obtained was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. The catalyst was shown to contain a Ni₂P phase. Its activity was studied in a temperature range of 250-400 °C and a H₂ pressure range of 5-9 MPa. The highest selectivity for benzene-toluene-xylene fraction was 93% at quantitative conversion.

Polyurethane Waste Recycling: Thermolysis of the Carbamate Fraction.

Project description:The alcoholysis of polyurethane waste is currently being industrialized, making it one of the most advanced chemical recycling processes for polyurethanes. However, the recycling potential of the dicarbamate phase, which accounts for 10-40% of the polyurethane mass, is often disregarded, as mainly the polyol components are (partially) retrieved in many alcoholysis processes. In this study, we present a two-step recycling method in which the valuable carbamate fraction obtained in the initial alcoholysis step is transformed into an isocyanate-rich mixture through an additional thermolysis step. For this purpose, different carbamates were synthesized and thermolyzed, which showed that thermolysis with isopropyl-carbamate was the most favorable, obtaining a yield of 35%. As a result, the isocyanates obtained through thermolysis and the polyols obtained through alcoholysis can be reused as starting materials in polyurethane synthesis.

Photoreforming of Nonrecyclable Plastic Waste over a Carbon Nitride/Nickel Phosphide Catalyst.

Project description:With over 8 billion tons of plastic produced since 1950, polymers represent one of the most widely used-and most widely discarded-materials. Ambient-temperature photoreforming offers a simple and low-energy means for transforming plastic waste into fuel and bulk chemicals but has previously only been reported using precious-metal- or Cd-based photocatalysts. Here, an inexpensive and nontoxic carbon nitride/nickel phosphide (CNx|Ni2P) photocatalyst is utilized to successfully reform poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) to clean H2 fuel and a variety of organic chemicals under alkaline aqueous conditions. Ni2P synthesized on cyanamide-functionalized carbon nitride is shown to promote efficient charge separation and catalysis, with a photostability of at least 5 days. The real-world applicability of photoreforming is further verified by generating H2 and organics from a selection of nonrecyclable waste-including microplastics (polyester microfibers) and food-contaminated plastic-and upscaling the system from 2 to 120 mL while maintaining its efficiency for plastic conversion.

Synthesis of Highly Monodisperse Nickel and Nickel Phosphide Nanoparticles.

Project description:Nickel and nickel phosphide nanoparticles are highly useful in various fields, owing to their catalytic and magnetic properties. Although several synthetic protocols to produce nickel and nickel phosphide nanoparticles have been previously proposed, controllable synthesis of nanoparticles using these methods is challenging. Herein, we synthesized highly monodisperse nickel and nickel phosphide nanoparticles via thermal decomposition of nickel-oleylamine-phosphine complexes in organic solvents. The size and composition of the nickel and nickel phosphide nanoparticles were easily controlled by changing the aging temperature, precursor concentration, and phosphine surfactant type. Large-sized monodisperse nickel nanoparticles obtained using our method were successfully applied for the purification of histidine-tagged proteins.

Recycling Pomelo Peel Waste in the Form of Hydrochar Obtained by Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Carbonization.

Project description:Pomelo peel (PP) is a kind of solid waste that is produced in the processing industry of honey pomelo. This study deeply explored the feasibility of recycling PP in the form of hydrochar (HC) by microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) technology. Under the non-catalytic reaction conditions, the yield of hydrochar initially increased with the rise of reaction temperature (150-210 °C) until it remained relatively stable after 210 °C. Under the CaO-catalytical reaction condition, the yield of hydrochar did not change much at first (150-190 °C) but decreased significantly when the reaction temperature exceeded 190 °C. After the microwave-assisted HTC treatment, the PP-derived HC presented higher aromaticity, carbonization degree, porosity, and caloric value. Compared with raw PP, the nutrients in HC were more stable (conducive to being used as slow-release fertilizer). The application of CaO increased the pH value of HC and effectively promoted the accumulation of phosphorus in HC. The HC produced at 210 °C without any catalyst possessing a high devolatilization ability. Additionally, the HC obtained at 190 °C with CaO as the catalyst presented a high combustion property. In general, PP-derived HC showed great application potential in the field of soil remediation/improvement and solid fuels. This preliminary study would undoubtedly provide some important fundamental understanding of the microwave-assisted HTC of PP.

Chemical Recycling of Polyolefins Waste Materials Using Supercritical Water.

Project description:In the following work, the hydrothermal degradation of polypropylene waste (PP) using supercritical water (SCW) has been studied. The procedure was carried out in a high-pressure, high-temperature batch reactor at 425 °C and 450 °C from 15 to 240 min. The results show a high yield of the oil (up to 95%) and gas (up to 20%) phases. The gained oil phase was composed of alkanes, alkenes, cycloalkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, and alcohols. Alkanes and alcohols predominated at 425 °C and shorter reaction times, while the content of aromatic hydrocarbons sharply increased at higher temperatures and times. The higher heating values (HHVs) of oil phases were in the range of liquid fuel (diesel, gasoline, crude and fuel oil), and they were between 48 and 42 MJ/kg. The gas phase contained light hydrocarbons (C1-C6), where propane was the most represented component. The results for PP degradation obtained in the present work were compared to the results of SCW degradation of colored PE waste, and the potential degradation mechanism of polyolefins waste in SCW is proposed. The results allowed to conclude that SCW processing technology represents a promising and eco-friendly tool for the liquefaction of polyolefin (PE and PP) waste into oil with a high conversion rate.

Structural Diversity in Molecular Nickel Phosphide Carbonyl Nanoclusters.

Project description:The reaction of [Ni6(CO)12]2- as a [NBu4]+ salt in CH2Cl2 with 0.8 equiv of PCl3 afforded [Ni14P2(CO)22]2-. In contrast, the reactions of [Ni6(CO)12]2- as a [NEt4]+ salt with 0.4-0.5 equiv of POCl3 afforded [Ni22-xP2(CO)29-x]4- (x = 0.84) or [Ni39P3(CO)44]6- by using CH3CN and thf as a solvent, respectively. Moreover, by using 0.7-0.9 mol of POCl3 per mole of [NEt4]2[Ni6(CO)12] both in CH3CN and thf, [Ni23-xP2(CO)30-x]4- (x = 0.82) was obtained together with [Ni22P6(CO)30]2- as a side product. [Ni23-xP2(CO)30-x]4- (x = 0.82) and [Ni22P6(CO)30]2- were separated owing to their different solubility in organic solvents. All the new molecular nickel phosphide carbonyl nanoclusters were structurally characterized through single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) as [NBu4]2[Ni14P2(CO)22] (two different polymorphs, P21/n and C2/c), [NEt4]4[Ni23-xP2(CO)30-x]·CH3COCH3·solv (x = 0.82), [NEt4]2[Ni22P6(CO)30]·2thf, [NEt4]4[Ni22-xP2(CO)29-x]·2CH3COCH3( x = 0.84) and [NEt4]6[Ni39P3(CO)44]·C6H14·solv. The metal cores' sizes of these clusters range from 0.59 to 1.10 nm, and their overall dimensions including the CO ligands are 1.16-1.63 nm. In this respect, they are comparable to ultrasmall metal nanoparticles, molecular nanoclusters, or atomically precise metal nanoparticles. The environment of the P atoms within these molecular Ni-P-CO nanoclusters displays a rich diversity, that is, Ni5P pentagonal pyramid, Ni7P monocapped trigonal prism, Ni8P bicapped trigonal prism, Ni9P monocapped square antiprism, Ni10P sphenocorona, Ni10P bicapped square antiprism, and Ni12P icosahedron.

Optimization studies of BTX removal by magnetite coated oleic acid obtained from microwave-assisted synthesis using response surface methodology.

Project description:Benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) are volatile organic compounds released into the environment, that require urgent removal to avoid adverse health effects. In this work, the modelling and optimization of the preparation factors for magnetite coated oleic acid (MNP-OA) composite from microwave synthesis using response surface methodology were conducted to maximize BTX removal, and iron content. The influence of five crucial preparation variables: the Fe3+/Fe2+ solution volumes, microwave power, volume of ammonia water (VAW), reaction time and volume of oleic acid (VOA) on the iron content (% Fe), and BTX adsorption capacity were investigated. The analysis of variance results revealed that VOA and VAW were the most influential factors for high % Fe content, and improved BTX removal. The % Fe, and BTX adsorption capacity for MNP-OA composite at optimized experimental conditions were estimated to be 85.57%, 90.02 mg/g (benzene), 90.07 mg/g (toluene), and 96.31 mg/g (xylene).

Recycling of Post-Consumer Waste Polystyrene Using Commercial Plastic Additives.

Project description:Photothermal conversion can promote plastic depolymerization (chemical recycling to a monomer) through light-to-heat conversion. The highly localized temperature gradient near the photothermal agent surface allows selective heating with spatial control not observed with bulk pyrolysis. However, identifying and incorporating practical photothermal agents into plastics for end-of-life depolymerization have not been realized. Interestingly, plastics containing carbon black as a pigment present an ideal opportunity for photothermal conversion recycling. Herein, we use visible light to depolymerize polystyrene plastics into styrene monomers by using the dye in commercial black plastics. A model system is evaluated by synthesizing polystyrene-carbon black composites and depolymerizing under white LED light irradiation, producing styrene monomer in up to 60% yield. Excitingly, unmodified postconsumer black polystyrene samples are successfully depolymerized to a styrene monomer without adding catalysts or solvents. Using focused solar irradiation, yields up to 80% are observed in just 5 min. Furthermore, combining multiple types of polystyrene plastics with a small percentage of black polystyrene plastic enables full depolymerization of the mixture. This simple method leverages existing plastic additives to actualize a closed-loop economy of all-colored plastics.

Nonmetallic Active Sites on Nickel Phosphide in Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:Efficient and durable catalysts are crucial for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The discovery of the high OER catalytic activity in Ni12P5 has attracted a great deal of attention recently. Herein, the microscopic mechanism of OER on the surface of Ni12P5 is studied using density functional theory calculations (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics simulation (AIMD). Our results demonstrate that the H2O molecule is preferentially adsorbed on the P atom instead of on the Ni atom, indicating that the nonmetallic P atom is the active site of the OER reaction. AIMD simulations show that the dissociation of H from the H2O molecule takes place in steps; the hydrogen bond changes from Oa-H⋯Ob to Oa⋯H-Ob, then the hydrogen bond breaks and an H+ is dissociated. In the OER reaction on nickel phosphides, the rate-determining step is the formation of the OOH group and the overpotential of Ni12P5 is the lowest, thus showing enhanced catalytic activity over other nickel phosphides. Moreover, we found that the charge of Ni and P sites has a linear relationship with the adsorption energy of OH and O, which can be utilized to optimize the OER catalyst.

Cobalt recycling patents dataset selected using 'green' classification codes: Focus on the nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries recycling.

Project description:The Critical Raw Materials Act has been emanated to address perceived risks around supply chains for critical raw materials in light of expected demand growth [1]. Cobalt is one of the critical raw materials for the EU: it plays a central role in transition to a low-carbon economy and is crucial for batteries powering electric vehicles. The cobalt industry is important not only because of the green transition, it also creates employment opportunities as Europe is the third largest region for total global cobalt value chain employment [2]. The global market for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is continuously increasing which results in higher material demand for the production of Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Especially Lithium nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries are one of the leading types of batteries deployed on BEVs and recovering of materials from used batteries for producing new battery materials may mitigate the material supply risk [3,4]. The present survey concerns the creation and comparison of two datasets of patents concerning Cobalt recycling, respectively achieved without (dataset 1) and with (dataset 2) the addition of one specific 'green' CPC classification code to a huge list of classification codes concerning recycling. Namely, the CPC Y02P10/20 determines a significant improvement on the exhaustivity of the search regarding Cobalt recycling in dataset 2, on the other hand it might also generate issues evidenced by a subsequent selection of those records in principle focused on the recovery of NMC batteries and characterized by several false positives. Therefore, a refinement strategy is recommended, to make the accuracy of the NMC dataset comparable to that characterizing the NMC results from dataset 1 achieved without any refinement.
