PANGAEA - Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science.

ABSTRACT: The information system PANGAEA provides targeted support for research data management as well as long-term data archiving and publication. PANGAEA is operated as an open access library for archiving, publishing, and distributing georeferenced data from earth and environmental sciences. It focuses on observational and experimental data. Citability, comprehensive metadata descriptions, interoperability of data and metadata, a high degree of structural and semantic harmonization of the data inventory as well as the commitment of the hosting institutions ensures the long-term usability of archived data. PANGAEA is a pioneer of FAIR and open data infrastructures to enable data intensive science and an integral component of national and international science and technology activities. This paper provides an overview of the recent organisational, structural, and technological advancements in developing and operating the information system.

Project description:Future human missions to the surface of the Moon and Mars will involve scientific exploration requiring new support tools to enable rapid and high quality science decision-making. Here, we describe the PANGAEA (Planetary ANalogue Geological and Astrobiological Exercise for Astronauts) Mineralogical Database developed by ESA (European Space Agency): a catalog of petrographic and spectroscopic information on all currently known minerals identified on the Moon, Mars, and associated with meteorites. The catalog also includes minerals found in the analog field sites used for ESA's geology and astrobiology training course PANGAEA, to broaden the database coverage. The Mineralogical Database is composed of the Summary Catalog of Planetary Analog Minerals and of the Spectral Archive and is freely available in the public repository of ESA PANGAEA. The Summary Catalog provides essential descriptive information for each mineral, including name (based on the International Mineralogical Association recommendation), chemical formula, mineral group, surface abundance on planetary bodies, geological significance in the context of planetary exploration, number of collected VNIR and Raman spectra, likelihood of detection using different spectral methods, and bibliographic references evidencing their detection in extraterrestrial or terrestrial analog environments. The Spectral Archive provides a standard library for planetary in-situ human and robotic exploration covering Visual-Near-Infrared reflective (VNIR) and Raman spectroscopy (Raman). To populate this library, we collected VNIR and Raman spectra for mineral entries in the Summary Catalog from open-access archives and analyzed them to select the ones with the best spectral features. We also supplemented this collection with our own bespoke measurements. Additionally, we compiled the chemical compositions for all the minerals based on their empirical formula, to allow identification using the measured abundances provided by LIBS and XRF analytical instruments. When integrated into an operational support system like ESA's Electronic Fieldbook (EFB) system, the Mineralogical Database can be used as a real-time and autonomous decision support tool for sampling operations on the Moon, Mars and during astronaut geological field training. It provides both robust spectral libraries to support mineral identification from instrument outputs, and relevant contextualized information on detected minerals.

Project description:IntroductionData science training has the potential to propel environmental health research efforts into territories that remain untapped and holds immense promise to change our understanding of human health and the environment. Though data science training resources are expanding, they are still limited in terms of public accessibility, user friendliness, breadth of content, tangibility through real-world examples, and applicability to the field of environmental health science.MethodsTo fill this gap, we developed an environmental health data science training resource, the inTelligence And Machine lEarning (TAME) Toolkit, version 2.0 (TAME 2.0).ResultsTAME 2.0 is a publicly available website that includes training modules organized into seven chapters. Training topics were prioritized based upon ongoing engagement with trainees, professional colleague feedback, and emerging topics in the field of environmental health research (e.g., artificial intelligence and machine learning). TAME 2.0 is a significant expansion upon the original TAME training resource pilot. TAME 2.0 specifically includes training organized into the following chapters: (1) Data management to enable scientific collaborations; (2) Coding in R; (3) Basics of data analysis and visualizations; (4) Converting wet lab data into dry lab analyses; (5) Machine learning; (6) Applications in toxicology and exposure science; and (7) Environmental health database mining. Also new to TAME 2.0 are "Test Your Knowledge" activities at the end of each training module, in which participants are asked additional module-specific questions about the example datasets and apply skills introduced in the module to answer them. TAME 2.0 effectiveness was evaluated via participant surveys during graduate-level workshops and coursework, as well as undergraduate-level summer research training events, and suggested edits were incorporated while overall metrics of effectiveness were quantified.DiscussionCollectively, TAME 2.0 now serves as a valuable resource to address the growing demand of increased data science training in environmental health research.
