Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Machine Learning for Accurate Dating of Historical Books.

ABSTRACT: Non-destructive, fast, and accurate methods of dating are highly desirable for many heritage objects. Here, we present and critically evaluate the use of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic data combined with three supervised machine learning methods to predict the publication year of paper books dated between 1851 and 2000. These methods provide different accuracies; however, we demonstrate that the underlying processes refer to common spectral features. Regardless of the machine learning method used, the most informative wavelength ranges can be associated with C-H and O-H stretching first overtone, typical of the cellulose structure, and N-H stretching first overtone from amide/protein structures. We find that the expected influence of degradation on the accuracy of prediction is not meaningful. The variance-bias decomposition of the reducible error reveals some differences among the three machine learning methods. Our results show that two out of the three methods allow predictions of publication dates in the period 1851-2000 from NIR spectroscopic data with an unprecedented accuracy of up to 2 years, better than any other non-destructive method applied to a real heritage collection.

Project description:Chronic tinnitus is a debilitating condition which affects 10-20% of adults and can severely impact their quality of life. Currently there is no objective measure of tinnitus that can be used clinically. Clinical assessment of the condition uses subjective feedback from individuals which is not always reliable. We investigated the sensitivity of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to differentiate individuals with and without tinnitus and to identify fNIRS features associated with subjective ratings of tinnitus severity. We recorded fNIRS signals in the resting state and in response to auditory or visual stimuli from 25 individuals with chronic tinnitus and 21 controls matched for age and hearing loss. Severity of tinnitus was rated using the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory and subjective ratings of tinnitus loudness and annoyance were measured on a visual analogue scale. Following statistical group comparisons, machine learning methods including feature extraction and classification were applied to the fNIRS features to classify patients with tinnitus and controls and differentiate tinnitus at different severity levels. Resting state measures of connectivity between temporal regions and frontal and occipital regions were significantly higher in patients with tinnitus compared to controls. In the tinnitus group, temporal-occipital connectivity showed a significant increase with subject ratings of loudness. Also in this group, both visual and auditory evoked responses were significantly reduced in the visual and auditory regions of interest respectively. Naïve Bayes classifiers were able to classify patients with tinnitus from controls with an accuracy of 78.3%. An accuracy of 87.32% was achieved using Neural Networks to differentiate patients with slight/ mild versus moderate/ severe tinnitus. Our findings show the feasibility of using fNIRS and machine learning to develop an objective measure of tinnitus. Such a measure would greatly benefit clinicians and patients by providing a tool to objectively assess new treatments and patients' treatment progress.

Project description:Fennel contains many antioxidant and antibacterial substances, and it has very important applications in food flavoring and other fields. The kinds and contents of chemical substances in fennel vary from region to region, which can affect the taste and efficacy of the fennel and its derivatives. Therefore, it is of great significance to accurately classify the origin of the fennel. Recently, origin detection methods based on deep networks have shown promising results. However, the existing methods spend a relatively large time cost, a drawback that is fatal for large amounts of data in practical application scenarios. To overcome this limitation, we explore an origin detection method that guarantees faster detection with classification accuracy. This research is the first to use the machine learning algorithm combined with the Fourier transform-near infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy to realize the classification and identification of the origin of the fennel. In this experiment, we used Rubberband baseline correction on the FT-NIR spectral data of fennel (Yumen, Gansu and Turpan, Xinjiang), using principal component analysis (PCA) for data dimensionality reduction, and selecting extreme learning machine (ELM), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), recurrent neural network (RNN), Transformer, generative adversarial networks (GAN) and back propagation neural network (BPNN) classification model of the company realizes the classification of the sample origin. The experimental results show that the classification accuracy of ELM, RNN, Transformer, GAN and BPNN models are above 96%, and the ELM model using the hardlim as the activation function has the best classification effect, with an average accuracy of 100% and a fast classification speed. The average time of 30 experiments is 0.05 s. This research shows the potential of the machine learning algorithm combined with the FT-NIR spectra in the field of food production area classification, and provides an effective means for realizing rapid detection of the food production area, so as to merchants from selling shoddy products as good ones and seeking illegal profits.

Project description:AimsCoronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is inferior to intravascular imaging in detecting plaque morphology and quantifying plaque burden. We aim to, for the first time, train a deep-learning (DL) methodology for accurate plaque quantification and characterization in CCTA using near-infrared spectroscopy-intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS).Methods and resultsSeventy patients were prospectively recruited who underwent CCTA and NIRS-IVUS imaging. Corresponding cross sections were matched using an in-house developed software, and the estimations of NIRS-IVUS for the lumen, vessel wall borders, and plaque composition were used to train a convolutional neural network in 138 vessels. The performance was evaluated in 48 vessels and compared against the estimations of NIRS-IVUS and the conventional CCTA expert analysis. Sixty-four patients (186 vessels, 22 012 matched cross sections) were included. Deep-learning methodology provided estimations that were closer to NIRS-IVUS compared with the conventional approach for the total atheroma volume (ΔDL-NIRS-IVUS: -37.8 ± 89.0 vs. ΔConv-NIRS-IVUS: 243.3 ± 183.7 mm3, variance ratio: 4.262, P < 0.001) and percentage atheroma volume (-3.34 ± 5.77 vs. 17.20 ± 7.20%, variance ratio: 1.578, P < 0.001). The DL methodology detected lesions more accurately than the conventional approach (Area under the curve (AUC): 0.77 vs. 0.67, P < 0.001) and quantified minimum lumen area (ΔDL-NIRS-IVUS: -0.35 ± 1.81 vs. ΔConv-NIRS-IVUS: 1.37 ± 2.32 mm2, variance ratio: 1.634, P < 0.001), maximum plaque burden (4.33 ± 11.83% vs. 5.77 ± 16.58%, variance ratio: 2.071, P = 0.004), and calcific burden (-51.2 ± 115.1 vs. -54.3 ± 144.4, variance ratio: 2.308, P < 0.001) more accurately than conventional approach. The DL methodology was able to segment a vessel on CCTA in 0.3 s.ConclusionsThe DL methodology developed for CCTA analysis from co-registered NIRS-IVUS and CCTA data enables rapid and accurate assessment of lesion morphology and is superior to expert analysts (Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT03556644).
