Project description:Weak, intermolecular interactions in amine dimers were studied by using the combination of a dispersionless density functional and a function that describes the dispersion contribution to the interaction energy. The validity of this method was shown by comparison of structural and energetic properties with data obtained with a conventional density functional and the coupled cluster method. The stability of amine dimers was shown to depend on the size, the shape, and the relative orientation of the alkyl substituents, and it was shown that the stabilization energy for large substituents is dominated by dispersion interactions. In contrast to traditional chemical explanations that attribute stability and condensed matter properties solely to hydrogen bonding and, thus, to the properties of the atoms forming the hydrogen bridge, we show that without dispersion interactions not even the stability and structure of the ammonia dimer can be correctly described. The stability of amine dimers depends crucially on the interaction between the non-polar alkyl groups, which is dominated by dispersion interactions. This interaction is also responsible for the energetic part of the free energy interaction used to describe hydrophobic interactions in liquid alkanes. The entropic part has its origin in the high degeneracy of the interaction energy for complexes of alkane molecules, which exist in a great variety of conformers, having their origin in internal rotations of the alkane chains.

Project description:In this work, we investigate the synthesis of (La0.8Sr0.2)MnO3 (LSM) in various molten salts to gain insight on the influence of molten salt ions for synthesizing materials critical for energy applications. LSM nanoparticles with a size range of ∼10-200 nm and with target stoichiometries were formed from oxide precursors via feeding into KNO3. Furthermore, feeding precursors into the melt compared to mixing and heating from room temperature results in complete formation of LSM that was otherwise unattainable using conventional molten salt synthesis methods. In LiCl-KCl eutectic, the high Lux acidity of Li+ and Cl- establishes a thermodynamic barrier that impedes Sr from reacting with other precursors in solution and increases Sr stability in the melt compared to the perovskite phase. As a result, LSM will not form in a LiCl-KCl eutectic under ambient conditions. Thus, this study further explicates the molten salt synthesis for perovskites and can serve as a guide for future syntheses.

Project description:The thermosalient behavior of 1,2,4,5-tetrabromobenzene (TBB) is related to a temperature-induced polymorphic structural change. The mechanism behind the phase transition has been investigated in this work using low-frequency (10-250 cm-1) Raman spectroscopy and solid-state density functional theory simulations. Careful adjustments of the probing laser power permitted thermal control of the polymorph populations and enabled high-quality Raman vibrational spectra to be obtained for both the β (low temperature) and γ (high temperature) forms of TBB. Numerous well-defined vibrational features appear in the Raman spectra of both polymorphs which could be assigned to specific motions of the solid-state TBB molecules. It was discovered that the lowest-frequency vibration at 15.5 cm-1 in β-TBB at 291 K is a rotational mode that functions as a gateway for inducing the polymorphic phase transition to γ-TBB, and serves as the initiating step in the storage of mechanical strain for subsequent macroscopic release. Computationally mapping the potential energy surface along this vibrational coordinate reveals that the two TBB polymorphs are separated by a 2.40 kJ mol-1 barrier and that γ-TBB exhibits an enhanced cohesion energy that stabilizes its structure.

Project description:This work is a systematic ab initio study of the influence of spin state and cation distribution on the stability, dielectric constant, electronic band gap, and density of states of ternary transition-metal oxides. As an example, the chemical family of spinel ferrites MFe2O4, with M = Mg, Sc-Zn is chosen. Dielectric constant and band gap are calculated for various spin states and cation configurations via dielectric-dependent self-consistent hybrid functionals and compared to available experimental data. When choosing the most stable spin state and cation configuration, the calculated electronic properties are in reasonable agreement with measured values. The nature of the excitation is investigated through projected density of states. A pronounced dependence of band gap energy and dielectric constant on the spin state and cation configuration is observed, which is a possible explanation for the large variation of the experimental results, in particular, if several states are energetically close.

Project description:The electrical transport property of the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) thin-films synthesized from defective GO through thermal treatment in a reactive ethanol environment at high temperature above 1000 °C shows a band-like transport with small thermal activation energy (Ea~10 meV) that occurs during high carrier mobility (~210 cm(2)/Vs). Electrical and structural analysis using X-ray absorption fine structure, the valence band photo-electron, Raman spectra and transmission electron microscopy indicate that a high temperature process above 1000 °C in the ethanol environment leads to an extraordinary expansion of the conjugated π-electron system in rGO due to the efficient restoration of the graphitic structure. We reveal that Ea decreases with the increasing density of states near the Fermi level due to the expansion of the conjugated π-electron system in the rGO. This means that Ea corresponds to the energy gap between the top of the valence band and the bottom of the conduction band. The origin of the band-like transport can be explained by the carriers, which are more easily excited into the conduction band due to the decreasing energy gap with the expansion of the conjugated π-electron system in the rGO.

Project description:We successfully prepared a surfactant-assisted carbon nanotube (CNT) liquid crystal (LC) dispersion with double-walled CNTs (DWCNTs) having a high aspect ratio (≈1378). Compared to dispersions of single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) with lower aspect ratio, the transition concentrations from isotropic phase to biphasic state, and from biphasic state to nematic phase are lowered, which is consistent with the predictions of the Onsager theory. An aligned DWCNT film was prepared from the DWCNT dispersion by a simple bar-coating method. Regardless of the higher aspect ratio, the order parameter obtained from the film is comparable to that from SWCNTs with lower aspect ratios. This finding implies that precise control of the film formation process, including a proper selection of substrate and deposition/drying steps, is crucial to maximize the CNT-LC utilization.

Project description:Elevated dissolved iron concentrations in the methanic zone are typical geochemical signatures of rapidly accumulating marine sediments. These sediments are often characterized by co-burial of iron oxides with recalcitrant aromatic organic matter of terrigenous origin. Thus far, iron oxides are predicted to either impede organic matter degradation, aiding its preservation, or identified to enhance organic carbon oxidation via direct electron transfer. Here, we investigated the effect of various iron oxide phases with differing crystallinity (magnetite, hematite, and lepidocrocite) during microbial degradation of the aromatic model compound benzoate in methanic sediments. In slurry incubations with magnetite or hematite, concurrent iron reduction, and methanogenesis were stimulated during accelerated benzoate degradation with methanogenesis as the dominant electron sink. In contrast, with lepidocrocite, benzoate degradation, and methanogenesis were inhibited. These observations were reproducible in sediment-free enrichments, even after five successive transfers. Genes involved in the complete degradation of benzoate were identified in multiple metagenome assembled genomes. Four previously unknown benzoate degraders of the genera Thermincola (Peptococcaceae, Firmicutes), Dethiobacter (Syntrophomonadaceae, Firmicutes), Deltaproteobacteria bacteria SG8_13 (Desulfosarcinaceae, Deltaproteobacteria), and Melioribacter (Melioribacteraceae, Chlorobi) were identified from the marine sediment-derived enrichments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and catalyzed reporter deposition fluorescence in situ hybridization (CARD-FISH) images showed the ability of microorganisms to colonize and concurrently reduce magnetite likely stimulated by the observed methanogenic benzoate degradation. These findings explain the possible contribution of organoclastic reduction of iron oxides to the elevated dissolved Fe2+ pool typically observed in methanic zones of rapidly accumulating coastal and continental margin sediments.

Project description:Two-phase bimetal composites contain both grain boundaries and bi-phase interfaces between dissimilar crystals. In this work, we use a crystal plasticity finite element framework to explore the effects of grain boundary interactions on the plastic stability of bi-phase interfaces. We show that neighboring grain interactions do not significantly alter interface plastic stability during plane strain compression. The important implications are that stable orientations at bimetal interfaces can be different than those within the bulk layers. This finding provides insight into bi-phase microstructural development and suggests a pathway for tuning interface properties via severe plastic deformation.

Project description:A photo-controllable rotational motion was demonstrated for an isolated cholesteric liquid crystalline droplet in a surfactant solution. The droplet showed unidirectional rigid-body rotation with UV light irradiation and the rotational rate could be controlled by the light intensity. Furthermore, the rotational direction could be controlled by the chirality of dopants. The motion was explained by the rotational torque induced by the photo-induced gradient of chemical concentrations and/or temperature inside the droplet from the theory of the Lehmann effect, and the possible mechanisms are discussed.

Project description:The phonon properties and thermodynamics of four crystalline cellulose allomorphs, Iα, Iβ, II, and III1, have been investigated using dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT). In line with experimental findings, the free energy differences between the studied cellulose allomorphs are small, less than 1 kJ/mol per atom. The calculated specific heat at constant volume (Cv) has been compared with the available experimental data in the temperature range 10-300 K. Quasiharmonic approximation has been employed to study thermodynamics and specific heat at constant pressure (Cp). For the studied temperature range of 10-400 K, the specific heat of all cellulose allomorphs shows very similar behavior. The calculated and experimental specific heat agree well at low temperatures below 100 K, but the deviation between theory and experiment increases with temperature. This may be due to increasing phonon anharmonicity as the temperature increases.
