Swedish civil air traffic control dataset.

ABSTRACT: The Swedish Civil Air Traffic Control (SCAT) dataset consists of 13 weeks of data collected from the area control in Sweden flight information region. The dataset consists of detailed data from almost 170,000 flights as well as airspace data and weather forecasts. The flight data includes system updated flight plans, clearances from air traffic control, surveillance data and trajectory prediction data. Each week of data is continuous but the 13 weeks are spread over one year to provide variations in weather and seasonal traffic patterns. The dataset does only include scheduled flights not involved in any incident reports. Sensitive data such as military and private flight has been removed. The SCAT dataset can be useful for any research related to air traffic control, e.g. analysis of transportation patterns, environmental impact, optimization and automation/AI.

Road traffic and air pollution: Evidence from a nationwide traffic control during coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak.

Project description:Existing estimations of air pollution from automobile sources are based on either experiments or small-scale governmental interventions. China's nationwide traffic control during the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak provided us a unique opportunity to assess the direct dose-effect relationship between vehicle density and air pollution. We found that, during the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak, the nationwide reduced air pollution (except for O3) could be largely explained by traffic control measures. During the traffic control period, every doubling of vehicle density was associated with a decrease of 4.2 (2.0, 6.4) μg/m3 in PM2.5, 5.5 (2.9, 8.1) μg/m3 in PM10, 1.5 (0.9, 2.0) μg/m3 in NO2, and 0.04 (0.02, 0.07) mg/m3 in CO comparing cities with different vehicle densities. Similarly, for every 10% increase in the truck proportion, PM2.5 decreased by 12.3 (4.1, 20.6) μg/m3, PM10 decreased by 14.3 (4.6, 23.9) μg/m3, and CO decreased by 0.14 (0.05, 0.23) mg/m3. Moreover, the associations between vehicle density and reduction in PM2.5, PM10, and CO during the traffic control period were stronger and showed near-complete linearity in cities with low green coverage rate (All P < 0.05 for interaction). According to our estimation, PM2.5 emissions from every doubling of vehicle density can lead to over 8000 excess deaths per year, 66% of which were caused by cardiopulmonary diseases. This natural experiment study is the first to observe the dose-effect relationship between on-road traffic and traffic-generated air pollution, as well as the mitigating effect of urban greening. Findings provide key evidence to the assessment and control of traffic-generated air pollution and its public health impact.

How Life Experience Shapes Cognitive Control Strategies: The Case of Air Traffic Control Training.

Project description:Although human flexible behavior relies on cognitive control, it would be implausible to assume that there is only one, general mode of cognitive control strategy adopted by all individuals. For instance, different reliance on proactive versus reactive control strategies could explain inter-individual variability. In particular, specific life experiences, like a highly demanding training for future Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs), could modulate cognitive control functions. A group of ATC trainees and a matched group of university students were tested longitudinally on task-switching and Stroop paradigms that allowed us to measure indices of cognitive control. The results showed that the ATCs, with respect to the control group, had substantially smaller mixing costs during long cue-target intervals (CTI) and a reduced Stroop interference effect. However, this advantage was present also prior to the training phase. Being more capable in managing multiple task sets and less distracted by interfering events suggests a more efficient selection and maintenance of task relevant information as an inherent characteristic of the ATC group, associated with proactive control. Critically, the training that the ATCs underwent improved their accuracy in general and reduced response time switching costs during short CTIs only. These results indicate a training-induced change in reactive control, which is described as a transient process in charge of stimulus-driven task detection and resolution. This experience-based enhancement of reactive control strategy denotes how cognitive control and executive functions in general can be shaped by real-life training and underlines the importance of experience in explaining inter-individual variability in cognitive functioning.

Performance evaluation of air pollution control device at traffic intersections in Delhi.

Project description:Urban air pollution and exposure-related health impacts are being noticed and discussed very intensely in India. On the other hand, source-specific control is the primary focus for policymakers; however, diverse and complex sources make it difficult to immediately see the action and consequent impacts on better air quality. Many cities across the world have witnessed high air pollution levels at traffic junctions, more so in all Indian cities. Site-specific air pollution reduction can be a promising solution for managing the pollution level at highly polluted locations. CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, India, has designed and developed Wind Augmentation and purifYing Unit (WAYU) to remove particulate and gaseous pollutants from urban hot spots such as traffic locations. In the present study, the authors attempted to evaluate the performance of two different designs of WAYU for the removal of particulate matters from polluted air at different traffic locations in Delhi City, the national capital territory of India. The performance analyses show that the current design of WAYU removes PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations in the range of 34-49% and 19-25%, respectively from the inlet air. The total PM collected from all WAYU devices was 34.19 kg from 120,557 operating hours' at all the sampling sites. The PM removal rate depends on the size-segregated particulate matter pollution load in the ambient air.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s13762-021-03641-3.

Reinventing European air traffic control based on the covid-19 pandemic experience.

Project description:This article/paper proposes to take advantage of the crisis resulting from COVID-19 and its' impact on Air Traffic Control (ATC) in Europe to reinvent it. The article explains its evolution, in particular, 20 years of Single European Sky reform process not having overcome the gridlock. The impact of the COVID-19 on aviation in general and specifically on ATC is described. It focuses on the avenues to overcome fragmentation and competing interests of the various stakeholders by reinventing EUROCONTROL Organisation as the agent to recover from the economic crisis.

Antecedents of civil engineering students' entrepreneurial intentions: Dataset article.

Project description:The Kingdom of Morocco has implemented significant reform projects over the past decade to promote youth entrepreneurship. In light of these efforts, it is essential to examine the antecedents of entrepreneurial intentions among students. To this end, the current data article aims to explore the antecedents of civil engineering students' entrepreneurial intentions. Thus, we collected data from civil engineering students using a self-administered questionnaire through Google Forms. We employed the partial least squares structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the collected dataset. The data analysis using SmartPLS software showed that entrepreneurial attitude, entrepreneurial capacity, and subjective norms positively and significantly affect the civil engineering students' entrepreneurial intention. The insights from this study can be used by Moroccan higher education institutions (HEI) managers to identify crucial elements that can improve students' inclination towards entrepreneurship.

Integrating spoken instructions into flight trajectory prediction to optimize automation in air traffic control.

Project description:The booming air transportation industry inevitably burdens air traffic controllers' workload, causing unexpected human factor-related incidents. Current air traffic control systems fail to consider spoken instructions for traffic prediction, bringing significant challenges in detecting human errors during real-time traffic operations. Here, we present an automation paradigm integrating controlling intent into the information processing loop through the spoken instruction-aware flight trajectory prediction framework. A 3-stage progressive multi-modal learning paradigm is proposed to address the modality gap between the trajectory and spoken instructions, as well as minimize the data requirements. Experiments on a real-world dataset show the proposed framework achieves flight trajectory prediction with high predictability and timeliness, obtaining over 20% relative reduction in mean deviation error. Moreover, the generalizability of the proposed framework is also confirmed by various model architectures. The proposed framework can formulate full-automated information processing in real-world air traffic applications, supporting human error detection and enhancing aviation safety.

COVID-19 in Italy: Dataset of the Italian Civil Protection Department.

Project description:The database here described contains data of integrated surveillance for the "Coronavirus disease 2019" (abbreviated as COVID-19 by the World Health Organization) in Italy, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. The database, included in a main folder called COVID-19, has been designed and created by the Italian Civil Protection Department, which currently manages it. The database consists of six folders called 'aree' (containing charts of geographical areas interested by containment measures), 'dati-andamento-nazionale' (containing data relating to the national trend of SARS-CoV-2 spread), 'dati-json' (containing data that summarize the national, provincial and regional trends of SARS-CoV-2 spread), 'dati-province' (containing data relating to the provincial trend of SARS-CoV-2 spread), 'dati-regioni' (containing data relating to the regional trend of SARS-CoV-2 spread) and 'schede-riepilogative' (containing summary sheets relating to the provincial and regional trends of SARS-CoV-2 spread). The Italian Civil Protection Department daily receives data by the Italian Ministry of Health, analyzes them and updates the database. Thus, the database is subject to daily updates and integrations. The database is freely accessible (CC-BY-4.0 license) at https://github.com/pcm-dpc/COVID-19. This database is useful to provide insight on the spread mechanism of SARS-CoV-2, to support organizations in the evaluation of the efficiency of current prevention and control measures, and to support governments in the future prevention decisions.

Beyond safety drivers: Applying air traffic control principles to support the deployment of driverless vehicles.

Project description:By adopting and extending lessons from the air traffic control system, we argue that a nationwide remote monitoring system for driverless vehicles could increase safety dramatically, speed these vehicles' deployment, and provide employment. It is becoming clear that fully driverless vehicles will not be able to handle "edge" cases in the near future, suggesting that new methods are needed to monitor remotely driverless vehicles' safe deployment. While the remote operations concept is not new, a super-human driver is needed to handle sudden, critical events. We envision that the remote operators do not directly drive the vehicles, but provide input on high level tasks such as path-planning, object detection and classification. This can be achieved via input from multiple individuals, coordinated around a task at a moment's notice. Assuming a 10% penetration rate of driverless vehicles, we show that one remote driver can replace 14,840 human drivers. A comprehensive nationwide interoperability standard and procedure should be established for the remote monitoring and operation of driverless vehicles. The resulting system has potential to be an order of magnitude safer than today's ground transportation system. We articulate a research and policy roadmap to launch this nationwide system. Additionally, this hybrid human-AI system introduces a new job category, likely a source of employment nationwide.

Congestion transition in air traffic networks.

Project description:Air Transportation represents a very interesting example of a complex techno-social system whose importance has considerably grown in time and whose management requires a careful understanding of the subtle interplay between technological infrastructure and human behavior. Despite the competition with other transportation systems, a growth of air traffic is still foreseen in Europe for the next years. The increase of traffic load could bring the current Air Traffic Network above its capacity limits so that safety standards and performances might not be guaranteed anymore. Lacking the possibility of a direct investigation of this scenario, we resort to computer simulations in order to quantify the disruptive potential of an increase in traffic load. To this end we model the Air Transportation system as a complex dynamical network of flights controlled by humans who have to solve potentially dangerous conflicts by redirecting aircraft trajectories. The model is driven and validated through historical data of flight schedules in a European national airspace. While correctly reproducing actual statistics of the Air Transportation system, e.g., the distribution of delays, the model allows for theoretical predictions. Upon an increase of the traffic load injected in the system, the model predicts a transition from a phase in which all conflicts can be successfully resolved, to a phase in which many conflicts cannot be resolved anymore. We highlight how the current flight density of the Air Transportation system is well below the transition, provided that controllers make use of a special re-routing procedure. While the congestion transition displays a universal scaling behavior, its threshold depends on the conflict solving strategy adopted. Finally, the generality of the modeling scheme introduced makes it a flexible general tool to simulate and control Air Transportation systems in realistic and synthetic scenarios.

A lightweight speech recognition method with target-swap knowledge distillation for Mandarin air traffic control communications.

Project description:Miscommunications between air traffic controllers (ATCOs) and pilots in air traffic control (ATC) may lead to catastrophic aviation accidents. Thanks to advances in speech and language processing, automatic speech recognition (ASR) is an appealing approach to prevent misunderstandings. To allow ATCOs and pilots sufficient time to respond instantly and effectively, the ASR systems for ATC must have both superior recognition performance and low transcription latency. However, most existing ASR works for ATC are primarily concerned with recognition performance while paying little attention to recognition speed, which motivates the research in this article. To address this issue, this article introduces knowledge distillation into the ASR for Mandarin ATC communications to enhance the generalization performance of the light model. Specifically, we propose a simple yet effective lightweight strategy, named Target-Swap Knowledge Distillation (TSKD), which swaps the logit output of the teacher and student models for the target class. It can mitigate the potential overconfidence of the teacher model regarding the target class and enable the student model to concentrate on the distillation of knowledge from non-target classes. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed TSKD in homogeneous and heterogeneous architectures. The experimental results reveal that the generated lightweight ASR model achieves a balance between recognition accuracy and transcription latency.
