Laboratory X-ray computed tomography imaging protocol allowing the operando investigation of electrode material evolution in various environments.

ABSTRACT: A robust imaging protocol utilizing laboratory XCT is presented. Hybrid 2D/3D imaging at different scales with real-time monitoring allowed to assess, in operation, the evolution of zinc electrodes within three environments, namely alkaline, near-neutral, and mildly acidic. Different combinations of currents were used to demonstrate various scenarios exhibiting both dendritic and smooth deposition of active material. Directly from radiograms, the volume of the electrode and therefore its growth/dissolution rate was estimated and compared against tomographic reconstructions and theoretical values. The protocol combines simplistic cell design with multiple three-dimensional and two-dimensional acquisitions at different magnifications, providing a unique insight into electrode's morphology evolution within various environments.

3D chemical imaging in the laboratory by hyperspectral X-ray computed tomography.

Project description:We report the development of laboratory based hyperspectral X-ray computed tomography which allows the internal elemental chemistry of an object to be reconstructed and visualised in three dimensions. The method employs a spectroscopic X-ray imaging detector with sufficient energy resolution to distinguish individual elemental absorption edges. Elemental distributions can then be made by K-edge subtraction, or alternatively by voxel-wise spectral fitting to give relative atomic concentrations. We demonstrate its application to two material systems: studying the distribution of catalyst material on porous substrates for industrial scale chemical processing; and mapping of minerals and inclusion phases inside a mineralised ore sample. The method makes use of a standard laboratory X-ray source with measurement times similar to that required for conventional computed tomography.

Laboratory x-ray micro-computed tomography: a user guideline for biological samples.

Project description:Laboratory x-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) is a fast-growing method in scientific research applications that allows for non-destructive imaging of morphological structures. This paper provides an easily operated "how to" guide for new potential users and describes the various steps required for successful planning of research projects that involve micro-CT. Background information on micro-CT is provided, followed by relevant setup, scanning, reconstructing, and visualization methods and considerations. Throughout the guide, a Jackson's chameleon specimen, which was scanned at different settings, is used as an interactive example. The ultimate aim of this paper is make new users familiar with the concepts and applications of micro-CT in an attempt to promote its use in future scientific studies.

Quantifying Bulk Electrode Strain and Material Displacement within Lithium Batteries via High-Speed Operando Tomography and Digital Volume Correlation.

Project description:Tracking the dynamic morphology of active materials during operation of lithium batteries is essential for identifying causes of performance loss. Digital volume correlation (DVC) is applied to high-speed operando synchrotron X-ray computed tomography of a commercial Li/MnO2 primary battery during discharge. Real-time electrode material displacement is captured in 3D allowing degradation mechanisms such as delamination of the electrode from the current collector and electrode crack formation to be identified. Continuum DVC of consecutive images during discharge is used to quantify local displacements and strains in 3D throughout discharge, facilitating tracking of the progression of swelling due to lithiation within the electrode material in a commercial, spiral-wound battery during normal operation. Displacement of the rigid current collector and cell materials contribute to severe electrode detachment and crack formation during discharge, which is monitored by a separate DVC approach. Use of time-lapse X-ray computed tomography coupled with DVC is thus demonstrated as an effective diagnostic technique to identify causes of performance loss within commercial lithium batteries; this novel approach is expected to guide the development of more effective commercial cell designs.

Interlaced X-ray diffraction computed tomography.

Project description:An X-ray diffraction computed tomography data-collection strategy that allows, post experiment, a choice between temporal and spatial resolution is reported. This strategy enables time-resolved studies on comparatively short timescales, or alternatively allows for improved spatial resolution if the system under study, or components within it, appear to be unchanging. The application of the method for studying an Mn-Na-W/SiO2 fixed-bed reactor in situ is demonstrated. Additionally, the opportunities to improve the data-collection strategy further, enabling post-collection tuning between statistical, temporal and spatial resolutions, are discussed. In principle, the interlaced scanning approach can also be applied to other pencil-beam tomographic techniques, like X-ray fluorescence computed tomography, X-ray absorption fine structure computed tomography, pair distribution function computed tomography and tomographic scanning transmission X-ray microscopy.

Experimental Realisation of High-sensitivity Laboratory X-ray Grating-based Phase-contrast Computed Tomography.

Project description:The possibility to perform high-sensitivity X-ray phase-contrast imaging with laboratory grating-based phase-contrast computed tomography (gbPC-CT) setups is of great interest for a broad range of high-resolution biomedical applications. However, achieving high sensitivity with laboratory gbPC-CT setups still poses a challenge because several factors such as the reduced flux, the polychromaticity of the spectrum, and the limited coherence of the X-ray source reduce the performance of laboratory gbPC-CT in comparison to gbPC-CT at synchrotron facilities. In this work, we present our laboratory X-ray Talbot-Lau interferometry setup operating at 40 kVp and describe how we achieve the high sensitivity yet unrivalled by any other laboratory X-ray phase-contrast technique. We provide the angular sensitivity expressed via the minimum resolvable refraction angle both in theory and experiment, and compare our data with other differential phase-contrast setups. Furthermore, we show that the good stability of our high-sensitivity setup allows for tomographic scans, by which even the electron density can be retrieved quantitatively as has been demonstrated in several preclinical studies.

Monochromatic computed tomography using laboratory-scale setup.

Project description:In this article, we demonstrate the viability of highly monochromatic full-field X-ray absorption near edge structure based tomography using a laboratory-scale Johann-type X-ray absorption spectrometer utilising a conventional X-ray tube source. In this proof-of-concept, by using a phantom embedded with elemental Se, Na[Formula: see text]SeO[Formula: see text], and Na[Formula: see text]SeO[Formula: see text], we show that the three-dimensional distributions of Se in different oxidation states can be mapped and distinguished from the phantom matrix and each other with absorption edge contrast tomography. The presented method allows for volumetric analyses of chemical speciation in mm-scale samples using low-brilliance X-ray sources, and represents a new analytic tool for materials engineering and research in many fields including biology and chemistry.

Resolving Li-Ion Battery Electrode Particles Using Rapid Lab-Based X-Ray Nano-Computed Tomography for High-Throughput Quantification.

Project description:Vast quantities of powder leave production lines each day, often with strict control measures. For quality checks to provide the most value, they must be capable of screening individual particles in 3D and at high throughput. Conceptually, X-ray computed tomography (CT) is capable of this; however, achieving lab-based reconstructions of individual particles has, until now, relied upon scan-times on the order of tens of hours, or even days, and although synchrotron facilities are potentially capable of faster scanning times, availability is limited, making in-line product analysis impractical. This work describes a preparation method and high-throughput scanning procedure for the 3D characterization of powder samples in minutes using nano-CT by full-filed transmission X-ray microscopy with zone-plate focusing optics. This is demonstrated on various particle morphologies from two next-generation lithium-ion battery cathodes: LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 and LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2; namely, NMC811 and NMC622. Internal voids are detected which limit energy density and promote degradation, potentially impacting commercial application such as the drivable range of an electric vehicle.

Operando X-ray Investigation of Electrode/Electrolyte Interfaces in Model Solid Oxide Fuel Cells.

Project description:We employed operando anomalous surface X-ray diffraction to investigate the buried interface between the cathode and the electrolyte of a model solid oxide fuel cell with atomic resolution. The cell was studied under different oxygen pressures at elevated temperatures and polarizations by external potential control. Making use of anomalous X-ray diffraction effects at the Y and Zr K-edges allowed us to resolve the interfacial structure and chemical composition of a (100)-oriented, 9.5 mol % yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) single crystal electrolyte below a La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ (LSC) electrode. We observe yttrium segregation toward the YSZ/LSC electrolyte/electrode interface under reducing conditions. Under oxidizing conditions, the interface becomes Y depleted. The yttrium segregation is corroborated by an enhanced outward relaxation of the YSZ interfacial metal ion layer. At the same time, an increase in point defect concentration in the electrolyte at the interface was observed, as evidenced by reduced YSZ crystallographic site occupancies for the cations as well as the oxygen ions. Such changes in composition are expected to strongly influence the oxygen ion transport through this interface which plays an important role for the performance of solid oxide fuel cells. The structure of the interface is compared to the bare YSZ(100) surface structure near the microelectrode under identical conditions and to the structure of the YSZ(100) surface prepared under ultrahigh vacuum conditions.

Benefits of applying X-ray computed tomography in bentonite based material research focussed on geological disposal of radioactive waste.

Project description:Bentonite-based geomaterials are included in the designs of geological repository planning in most countries, especially in high-level radioactive waste disposal. Physical integrity of the bentonite sealant is key in assuring its hydraulic and retention properties, which affect the long-term performance of the repositories. Examination of the internal textures and structures of bentonite has been challenging until recently. Here, X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is applied to improve the textural and structural characterization of natural and man-made bentonite samples. Based on these initial analyses, clear benefits have been identified compared with conventional bentonite research methods. First, applying XCT prior to destructive analytical methods provides means to distinguish secondary features or in situ textures. It allows to eliminate false interpretations due to sample deformation and guides subsampling. Second, XCT images add the third dimension to analyses, allowing larger spatial coverage in less time. Overall, findings support the application of XCT for reducing uncertainties related to physical characterization of bentonite samples, both natural and industrial. They also show that XCT has potential to be developed to support quality assurance processes for bentonite sealant manufacturing.

Five material tissue decomposition by dual energy computed tomography.

Project description:The separation of mixtures of substances into their individual components plays an important role in many areas of science. In medical imaging, one method is the established analysis using dual-energy computed tomography. However, when analyzing mixtures consisting of more than three individual basis materials, a physical limit is reached that no longer allows this standard analysis. In addition, the X-ray attenuation coefficients of chemically complicated basis materials may not be known and also cannot be determined by other or previous analyses. To address these issues, we developed a novel theoretical approach and algorithm and tested it on samples prepared in the laboratory as well as on ex-vivo medical samples. This method allowed both five-material decomposition and determination or optimization of the X-ray attenuation coefficients of the sample base materials via optimizations of objective functions. After implementation, this new multimodal method was successfully tested on self-mixed samples consisting of the aqueous base solutions iomeprol, eosin Y disodiumsalt, sodium chloride, and pure water. As a first proof of concept of this technique for detailed material decomposition in medicine we analyzed exact percentage composition of ex vivo clots from patients with acute ischemic stroke, using histological analysis as a reference standard.
