Photocrystallography of [Ru(bpy)₂(dmso)₂]²⁺ reveals an O-bonded metastable state.

ABSTRACT: We report the first instance of observing the phototriggered isomerization of dmso ligands on a bis sulfoxide complex, [Ru(bpy)₂(dmso)₂], in the crystalline solid state. The solid-state UV-vis spectrum of the crystal demonstrates an increase in optical density around 550 nm after irradiation, which is consistent with the solution isomerization results. Digital images of the crystal before and after irradiation display a notable color change (pale orange to red) and cleavage occurs along planes, (1̄01) and (100), during irradiation. Single crystal X-ray diffraction data also confirms that isomerization is occurring throughout the lattice and a structure that contains a mix of the S,S and O,O/S,O isomer was attained from a crystal irradiated ex situ. In situ irradiation XRD studies reveal that the percentage of the O-bonded isomer increases as a function of 405 nm exposure time.

An excited state dynamics driven reaction: wavelength-dependent photoisomerization quantum yields in [Ru(bpy)2(dmso)2]2.

Project description:We report the excited-state behavior of a structurally simple bis-sulfoxide complex, cis-S,S-[Ru(bpy)2(dmso)2]2+, as investigated by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. The results reveal that a single photon prompts phototriggered isomerization of one or both dmso ligands to yield a mixture of cis-S,O-[Ru(bpy)2(dmso)2]2+ and cis-O,O-[Ru(bpy)2(dmso)2]2+. The quantum yields of isomerization of each product and relative product distribution are dependent upon the excitation wavelength, with longer wavelengths favoring the double isomerization product, cis-O,O-[Ru(bpy)2(dmso)2]2+. Transient absorption measurements on cis-O,O-[Ru(bpy)2(dmso)2]2+ do not reveal an excited-state isomerization pathway to produce either the S,O or S,S isomers. Femtosecond pulse shaping experiments reveal no change in the product distribution. Pump-repump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy of cis-S,S-[Ru(bpy)2(dmso)2]2+ shows that a pump-repump time delay of 3 ps dramatically alters the S,O : O,O product ratio; pump-repump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy of cis-O,O-[Ru(bpy)2(dmso)2]2+ with a time delay of 3 ps uncovers an excited-state isomerization pathway to produce the S,O isomer. In conjunction with low-temperature steady-state emission spectroscopy, these results are interpreted in the context of an excited-state bifurcating pathway, in which the isomerization product distribution is determined not by thermodynamics, but rather as a dynamics driven reaction.

Excited-State Dynamics of [Ru(S-Sbpy)(bpy)2]2+ to Form Long-Lived Localized Triplet States.

Project description:The novel photosensitizer [Ru(S-Sbpy)(bpy)2]2+ harbors two distinct sets of excited states in the UV/Vis region of the absorption spectrum located on either bpy or S-Sbpy ligands. Here, we address the question of whether following excitation into these two types of states could lead to the formation of different long-lived excited states from where energy transfer to a reactive species could occur. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy identifies the formation of the final state within 80 fs for both excitation wavelengths. The recorded spectra hint at very similar dynamics following excitation toward either the parent or sulfur-decorated bpy ligands, indicating ultrafast interconversion into a unique excited-state species regardless of the initial state. Non-adiabatic surface hopping dynamics simulations show that ultrafast spin-orbit-mediated mixing of the states within less than 50 fs strongly increases the localization of the excited electron at the S-Sbpy ligand. Extensive structural relaxation within this sulfurated ligand is possible, via S-S bond cleavage that results in triplet state energies that are lower than those in the analogue [Ru(bpy)3]2+. This structural relaxation upon localization of the charge on S-Sbpy is found to be the reason for the formation of a single long-lived species independent of the excitation wavelength.

Excited-State Dynamics of [Ru(bpy)3 ]2+ Thin Films on Sensitized TiO2 and ZrO2.

Project description:The excited state dynamics of Tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) hexafluorophosphate, [Ru(bpy)3 (PF6 )2 ], was investigated on the surface of bare and sensitized TiO2 and ZrO2 films. The organic dyes LEG4 and MKA253 were selected as sensitizers. A Stern-Volmer plot of LEG4-sensitized TiO2 substrates with a spin-coated [Ru(bpy)3 (PF6 )2 ] layer on top shows considerable quenching of the emission of the latter. Interestingly, time-resolved emission spectroscopy reveals the presence of a fast-decay time component (25±5 ns), which is absent when the anatase TiO2 semiconductor is replaced by ZrO2 . It should be specified that the positive redox potential of the ruthenium complex prevents electron transfer from the [Ru(bpy)3 (PF6 )2 ] ground state into the oxidized sensitizer. Therefore, we speculate that the fast-decay time component observed stems from excited-state electron transfer from [Ru(bpy)3 (PF6 )2 ] to the oxidized sensitizer. Solid-state dye sensitized solar cells (ssDSSCs) employing MKA253 and LEG4 dyes, with [Ru(bpy)3 (PF6 )2 ] as a hole-transporting material (HTM), exhibit 1.2 % and 1.1 % power conversion efficiency, respectively. This result illustrates the possibility of the hypothesized excited-state electron transfer.

Multiple Triplet Metal-Centered Jahn-Teller Isomers Determine Temperature-Dependent Luminescence Lifetimes in [Ru(bpy)3 ]2.

Project description:Understanding the factors that determine the luminescence lifetime of transition metal compounds is key for applications in photocatalysis and photodynamic therapy. Here we show that for [Ru(bpy)3]2+${[{\rm{Ru}}({\rm{bpy}})_{\rm{3}} ]^{{\rm{2 + }}} }$ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), the generally accepted idea that emission lifetimes can be controlled optimizing the energy barrier from the emissive triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (3 MLCT) state to the thermally-activated triplet metal-centered (3 MC) state or the energy gap between both states is a misconception. Further, we demonstrate that considering a single relaxation pathway determined from the minimum that is lowest in energy leads to wrong temperature-dependent emission lifetimes predictions. Instead, we obtain excellent agreement with experimental temperature-dependent lifetimes when an extended kinetic model that includes all the pathways related to multiple Jahn-Teller isomers and their effective reaction barriers is employed. These concepts are essential to correctly design other luminescent transition metal complexes with tailored emission lifetimes based on theoretical predictions.

pH-Driven Mechanistic Switching from Electron Transfer to Energy Transfer between [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and Ferrocene Derivatives.

Project description:The metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited states of [Ru(bpy)3]2+ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) may be deactivated via energy transfer or electron transfer with ferrocene derivatives in aqueous conditions. Stern-Volmer quenching analysis revealed that the rate constant for [Ru(bpy)3]2+ excited-state quenching depends on solution pH when a ferrocenyl-amidinium derivative (Fc-am) containing a proton-responsive functionality tethered to the ferrocene center was present. By contrast, the rate constant with which the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ excited state is quenched by an analogous ferrocene derivative (ferrocenyl-trimethylammonium, Fc-mam) that lacks a protonic group does not depend on pH. These results show that the presence (or absence) of a readily transferrable proton modulates quenching rate constants in bimolecular events involving [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and ferrocene. More surprisingly, transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that the mechanism by which the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ excited state is quenched by Fc-am appears to be modulated by solution proton availability, switching from energy transfer at low pH when Fc-am is protonated, to electron transfer at high pH when Fc-am is deprotonated. The mechanistic switching that is observed for this system cannot be aptly explained using a simple driving force dependence argument, suggesting that more subtle factors dictate the pathway by which the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ excited state is deactivated by ferrocene in aqueous solutions.

Metal-Mediated Organocatalysis in Water: Serendipitous Discovery of Aldol Reaction Catalyzed by the [Ru(bpy)2(nornicotine)2]2+ Complex.

Project description:The [Ru(bpy)2(Nor)2]2+ complex (Nor = nornicotine) is an efficient catalyst for the aldol reaction of acetone with activated benzaldehydes in a buffered aqueous solution. The metal plays the role of an activator for the nornicotine organocatalyst ligands. The resulting catalytic activity is potentiated by a factor of about 4.5 as compared to free nornicotine. Similar rate enhancements can be achieved by using Zn(II) cations as the activator. The observations are rationalized with the reduced basicity of the pyrrolidine N in nornicotine due to the enhanced electron withdrawal of the metal-complexed pyridyl moiety.

Water-Assisted Concerted Proton-Electron Transfer at Co(II)-Aquo Sites in Polyoxotungstates With Photogenerated RuIII (bpy)3 3+ Oxidant.

Project description:The cobalt substituted polyoxotungstate [Co6 (H2 O)2 (α-B-PW9 O34 )2 (PW6 O26 )]17- (Co6) displays fast electron transfer (ET) kinetics to photogenerated RuIII (bpy)3 3+ , 4 to 5 orders of magnitude faster than the corresponding ET observed for cobalt oxide nanoparticles. Mechanistic evidence has been acquired indicating that: (i) the one-electron oxidation of Co6 involves Co(II) aquo or Co(II) hydroxo groups (abbreviated as Co6(II)-OH2 and Co6(II)-OH, respectively, whose speciation in aqueous solution is associated to a pKa of 7.6), and generates a Co(III)-OH moiety (Co6(III)-OH), as proven by transient absorption spectroscopy; (ii) at pH>pKa , the Co6(II)-OH→RuIII (bpy)3 3+ ET occurs via bimolecular kinetics, with a rate constant k close to the diffusion limit and dependent on the ionic strength of the medium, consistent with reaction between charged species; (iii) at pH <pKa , the process involves Co6(II)-OH2 →Co6(III)-OH transformation and proceeds via a multiple-site, concerted proton electron transfer (CPET) where water assists the transfer of the proton, as proven by the absence of effect of buffer base concentrations on the rate of the ET and by a H/D kinetic isotope in a range of 1.2-1.4. The reactivity of water is ascribed to its organization on the surface of the polyanionic scaffold through hydrogen bond networking involving the Co(II)-OH2 group.

Ratiometric Fluorescence Detection of DNA Based on the Inner Filter Effect of Ru(bpy)2(dppx)2+ toward Silicon Nanodots.

Project description:A ratiometric DNA sensor was developed based on fluorescent silicon nanodots (SiNDs) and Ru(bpy)2(dppx)2+. The absorption spectrum of Ru(bpy)2(dppx)2+ has significant overlap with both the excitation and emission spectra of SiNDs. Therefore, fluorescence quenching of Ru(bpy)2(dppx)2+ toward SiNDs can occur on account of the strong inner filter effect. The effect of quenching is not influenced by the specific binding between Ru(bpy)2(dppx)2+ and DNA. Fluorescence turn-on detection of DNA can be performed employing Ru(bpy)2(dppx)2+ and SiNDs as the response and reference signals, respectively. Using SiND-Ru(bpy)2(dppx)2+, a convenient, sensitive, rapid, and precise method could be developed for DNA detection. In aqueous solutions, the I 601/I 448 fluorescence intensity ratio of SiND-Ru(bpy)2(dppx)2+ increases linearly in the DNA concentration range of 20-1500 nM. The limit of detection and precision of the method is 4.3 nM and 3.5% (50 nM, n = 13), respectively. The ratiometric sensor was tested for visual detection of trace DNA. Moreover, this method was found suitable for the ratiometric detection of DNA in a simulated sample and a human serum sample, and the recoveries were in the range of 98-119%.

Zika Virus Liquid Biopsy: A Dendritic Ru(bpy)3 2+-Polymer-Amplified ECL Diagnosis Strategy Using a Drop of Blood.

Project description:Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that leads to devastating consequences for fetal development. However, accurate diagnosis of ZIKV is made difficult by the fact that most infected patients are asymptomatic or present with symptoms similar to those of other febrile illnesses. Thus, the development of a simple, accurate, highly sensitive, and reliable method for the biomedical analysis and diagnosis of ZIKV is needed. Herein, a novel ZIKV liquid biopsy system was constructed via a dendritic Ru(bpy)3 2+-polymer-amplified electro-chemiluminescence (ECL) strategy. This system accomplished amplification-free analysis of ZIKV using a drop of blood, and simultaneously achieved a high sensitivity of 500 copies and superior specificity. This strategy adopted the humoral biomarker as the diagnostic index, which greatly simplified the analysis process, and established a nondestructive detection mode. Furthermore, the performance index for biomedical analysis of clinical ZIKV samples was investigated, and the results indicated that the dendritic Ru(bpy)3 2+-polymer-amplified ECL strategy reliably responded to ZIKV from the body fluid (blood, saliva, and urine). Hence, this system suitably met the strict clinical requirements for ZIKV detection and thus has the potential to serve as a new paradigm for the biomedical analysis and diagnosis of ZIKV.
