Potassium and Cesium Fluorinated β-Diketonates: Effect of a Cation and Terminal Substituent on Structural and Thermal Properties.

ABSTRACT: As potential precursors for the synthesis of fluoroperovskites, a family of heavy alkali metal (M^I = K, Cs) fluorinated β-diketonates were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and powder-XRD. The crystal structures of the new six complexes, M^I(β-dik^F)(H₂O)_X, X = 0 or 1, were also determined. The structural diversity of this poorly explored class of complexes was discussed, including the preferred types of cation polyhedra and the ligand coordination modes, and the thermal properties of the metal β-diketonates were studied by TG-DTA in an inert (He) atmosphere. The data obtained allowed us to reveal the effect of the metal cation and the terminal substituent on the structural and thermal features of this family of complexes.

Structural Diversity of Silver Fluorinated β-Diketonates: Effect of the Terminal Substituent and Solvent.

Project description:In order to demonstrate the role of the fluorination and some solvents in the structural organization of the Ag(I) coordination polymers with β-diketonate ligands (R1C(O)CαHC(O)R2)- we synthesized a series of the compounds containing tfac- (R1 = CH3, R2 = CF3) and pfpac- (R1 = CH3, R2 = C2F5) anions. Solvent-free [Ag(L)]∞ (L = tfac 1, pfpac 2) compounds and the corresponding acetonitrile and toluene adducts have been characterized by elemental analysis and/or NMR, IR and single-crystal XRD. This series includes five new coordination polymers. Compound 1 is a 3D coordination framework based on Ag-Ochelate/bridge, Ag-Cα bonds, and argentophilic interactions. An increase in the fluorinated group leads to a chain coordination polymer 2 of an unusual structural organization. These chains can be represented as a "DNA-type", where two intertwined helices based on Ag-Ochelate and Ag-Cα bonds are connected through Ag-Obridge ones. Two structural types of chain coordination polymers, [Ag(tfac)(CH3CN)] and [Ag2(L)2(solvent)], have been revealed for the adducts. The latter structural type differs significantly from the previously studied toluene and acetonitrile adducts of fluorinated Ag(I) β-diketonates of the same stoichiometry. Thermal analysis in helium showed that both 1 and 2 decompose to metallic silver with the compound of pfpac-ligand being slightly more stable.

Thermal, Rheological, Structural and Adhesive Properties of Wheat Starch Gels with Different Potassium Alum Contents.

Project description:Wheat starch (WS) is a common adhesive material used in mounting of calligraphy and paintings. Potassium alum (PA) has indeed been used for many centuries to modify the physicochemical properties of starch. Thermal analysis revealed that the presence of PA led to an increase in the gelatinization temperature and enthalpy of the starch gels. The leached amylose and the swelling power of the starch gels exhibited a maximum at the ratio of 100:6.0 (WS:PA, w/w). The rheological properties of starch gels were consistent with changes in the swelling power of starch granules. SEM observations confirmed that the gel structure became more regular, and the holes grew larger with the addition of PA below the ratio of 100:6.0 (WS:PA, w/w). The short-range molecular order in the starch gels was enhanced by the addition of PA, confirmed by FT-IR analysis. Mechanical experiments demonstrated that the binding strength of the starch gels increased with higher PA concentrations and decreased significantly after the aging process. TGA results revealed that PA promoted the acid degradation of starch molecules. This study provides a detailed guide for the preparation of starch-based adhesive and its applications in paper conservation.

Two-Dimensional Fluorinated Boron Sheets: Mechanical, Electronic, and Thermal Properties.

Project description:The synthesis of atomically thin boron sheets on a silver substrate opened a new area in the field of two-dimensional systems. Similar to hydrogenated and halogenated graphene, the uniform coating of borophene with fluorine atoms can lead to new derivatives of borophene with novel properties. In this respect, we explore the possible structures of fluorinated borophene for varying levels of coverage (B n F) by using first-principles methods. Following the structural optimizations, phonon spectrum analysis and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are performed to reveal the stability of the obtained structures. Our results indicate that while fully fluorinated borophene (BF) cannot be obtained, stable configurations with lower coverage levels (B4F and B2F) can be attained. Unveiling the stable structures, we explore the mechanical, electronic, and thermal properties of (B n F). Fluorination significantly alters the mechanical properties of the system, and remarkable results, including direction-dependent variation of Young's modulus and a switch from a negative to positive Poisson's ratio, are obtained. However, the metallic character is preserved for low coverage levels, and metal to semiconductor transition is obtained for B2F. The heat capacity at a low temperature increases with an increasing F atom amount but converges to the same limiting value at high temperatures. The enhanced stability and unique properties of fluorinated borophene make it a promising material for various high-technology applications in reduced dimensions.

Novel Synthesis of Slightly Fluorinated Graphene Quantum Dots with Luminescent and Paramagnetic Properties through Thermal Cutting of Fluorinated Graphene.

Project description:A novel approach has been developed to synthesize slightly fluorinated graphene quantum dots (GQDs-F) through thermal cutting of highly fluorinated graphene. The fluorinated graphene with substantial structure defects is fragile and is readily attacked. The direct evaporation of abundant CFn (n = 2, 3) groups near structure defects lead to the loss of adjacent skelton C atoms, and the fluorinated graphene can be thermally cut into GQDs-F with a relatively uniform nanosize in pyrolysis at 810 K. The GQDs-F with a low F/C atomic ratio of ca. 0.03 exhibit excitation wavelength-dependent properties with multicolor photoluminescence (PL) from blue to green. At the same time, F adatoms that are most likely located at the edges of GQDs-F have a high efficiency of introducing paramagnetic centres, and GQDs-F show a strong paramagnetism because of sp³-type defects and magnetic zigzag edges. The graphene quantum dots with such multimodal capabilities should have great applied value in material science.

Synthesis and Investigations of the Antitumor Effects of First-Row Transition Metal(II) Complexes Supported by Two Fluorinated and Non-Fluorinated β-Diketonates.

Project description:The 3d transition metal (Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II)) complexes, supported by anions of sterically demanding β-diketones, 1,3-dimesitylpropane-1,3-dione (HLMes) and 1,3-bis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3-hydroxyprop-2-en-1-one (HLCF3), were synthesized and evaluated for their antitumor activity. To assess the biological effects of substituents on phenyl moieties, we also synthesized and investigated the analogous metal(II) complexes of the anion of the less bulky 1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dione (HLPh) ligand. The compounds [Cu(LCF3)2], [Cu(LMes)2] and ([Zn(LMes)2]) were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The [Cu(LCF3)2] crystallizes with an apical molecule of solvent (THF) and features a rare square pyramidal geometry at the Cu(II) center. The copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes of diketonate ligands, derived from the deprotonated 1,3-dimesitylpropane-1,3-dione (HLMes), adopt a square planar or a tetrahedral geometry at the metal, respectively. We evaluated the antitumor properties of the newly synthesized (Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II)) complexes against a series of human tumor cell lines derived from different solid tumors. Except for iron derivatives, cellular studies revealed noteworthy antitumor properties, even towards cancer cells endowed with poor sensitivity to the reference drug cisplatin.

Substituent Effect in the Cation Radicals of Monosubstituted Benzenes.

Project description:In 30 monosubstituted benzene cation radicals, studied at the ωB97XD/aug-cc-pVTZ level, the phenyl rings usually adopt a compressed form, but a differently compressed form-equivalent to an elongated one-may coexist. The computational and literature ionization potentials are well correlated. The geometrical and magnetic aromaticity, estimated using HOMA and NICS indices, show the systems to be structurally aromatic but magnetically antiaromatic or only weakly aromatic. The partial charge is split between the substituent and ring and varies the most at C(ipso). In the ring, the spin is 70%, concentrated equally at the C(ipso) and C(p) atoms. The sEDA(D) and pEDA(D) descriptors of the substituent effect in cation radicals, respectively, were determined. In cation radicals, the substituent effect on the σ-electron system is like that in the ground state. The effect on the π-electron systems is long-range, and its propagation in the radical quinone-like ring is unlike that in the neutral molecules. The pEDA(D) descriptor correlates well with the partial spin at C(ipso) and C(p) and weakly with the HOMA(D) index. The correlation of the spin at the ring π-electron system and the pEDA(D) descriptor shows that the electron charge supplied to the ring π-electron system and the spin flow oppositely.

Innovative Fluorinated Polyimides with Superior Thermal, Mechanical, and Dielectric Properties for Advanced Soft Electronics.

Project description:This study addresses the limitations of traditional polyimides (PIs) in high-frequency and high-temperature soft electronic applications, and then introducing trifluoromethylbenzene (TFMB) into the molecular structure and employing various diamines as connecting components to solve the bottleneck. The innovative molecular design enhances thermal, mechanical, and dielectric properties, overcoming challenges in balancing these performances. The optimized fluorinated PI (TPPI50) exhibits exceptional properties, including a glass transition temperature of 402 °C, thermal decomposition temperature of 563 °C, tensile strength of 232.73 MPa, elongation at break of 26.26%, and dielectric constant of 2.312 at 1 MHz with a dielectric loss as low as 0.00676. These improvements are attributed to the unique synergy between TFMB's fluorinated groups, which reduce molecular polarization, and the biphenyl structure, which reinforces chain stability. Compared to conventional PIs, TPPI50 demonstrates superior comprehensive performance, making it highly suitable for soft circuits, high-frequency signal transmission, and advanced applications such as wearable devices and biosensors. This study provides a robust framework for industrial applications, offering a path to next-generation soft electronics with enhanced reliability and performance.

Effect of N-phenyl substituent on thermal, optical, electrochemical and luminescence properties of 3-aminophthalimide derivatives.

Project description:The seven N-phthalimide derivatives substituted with the amine group at the 3-C position in the phenylene ring were synthesized. The effect of N-substituent chemical structure was investigated. The thermal, electrochemical and optical studies were performed and supported by the density functional theory calculations (DFT). The electrochemical investigations of the synthesized low-molecular phthalimides revealed the one oxidation and reduction process with the HOMO energy level under - 5.81 eV and energy-band gap below 3 eV. The N-phthalimide derivatives were emitted light in a blue spectral region in solutions (in polar and non-polar) with the quantum yield between 2 and 68%, dependent on the substituent at the nitrogen atom, solvent and concentration. The N-phthalimide derivatives were emissive also in a solid state as a thin film and powder. They were tested as a component of the active layer with PVK:PBD matrix and as an independent active layer in the organic light-emitting diodes. The registered electroluminescence spectra exhibited the maximum emission band in the 469-505 nm range, confirming the possibility of using N-phthalimides with PVK:PBD matrix as the blue emitters.

Synthesis, duplex stabilization and structural properties of a fluorinated carbocyclic LNA analogue.

Project description:DNA oligonucleotides modified with nucleoside monomers which have an electron withdrawing group (EWG) at the 2'-position of the furanose ring form more stable duplexes with complementary RNA as compared to unmodified DNA. Here we show that an anti-periplanar orientation of the nucleobase and the 2'-EWG is important for optimal duplex stabilization even for nucleic acid analogues with conformationally locked furanose rings.
