Non-interferometric stand-alone single-shot holographic camera using reciprocal diffractive imaging.

ABSTRACT: An ideal holographic camera measures the amplitude and phase of the light field so that the focus can be numerically adjusted after the acquisition, and depth information about an imaged object can be deduced. The performance of holographic cameras based on reference-assisted holography is significantly limited owing to their vulnerability to vibration and complex optical configurations. Non-interferometric holographic cameras can resolve these issues. However, existing methods require constraints on an object or measurement of multiple-intensity images. In this paper, we present a holographic image sensor that reconstructs the complex amplitude of scattered light from a single-intensity image using reciprocal diffractive imaging. We experimentally demonstrate holographic imaging of three-dimensional diffusive objects and suggest its potential applications by imaging a variety of samples under both static and dynamic conditions.

Monocular metasurface camera for passive single-shot 4D imaging.

Project description:It is a grand challenge for an imaging system to simultaneously obtain multi-dimensional light field information, such as depth and polarization, of a scene for the accurate perception of the physical world. However, such a task would conventionally require bulky optical components, time-domain multiplexing, and active laser illumination. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a compact monocular camera equipped with a single-layer metalens that can capture a 4D image, including 2D all-in-focus intensity, depth, and polarization of a target scene in a single shot under ambient illumination conditions. The metalens is optimized to have a conjugate pair of polarization-decoupled rotating single-helix point-spread functions that are strongly dependent on the depth of the target object. Combined with a straightforward, physically interpretable image retrieval algorithm, the camera can simultaneously perform high-accuracy depth sensing and high-fidelity polarization imaging over an extended depth of field for both static and dynamic scenes in both indoor and outdoor environments. Such a compact multi-dimensional imaging system could enable new applications in diverse areas ranging from machine vision to microscopy.

Single-shot dual-wavelength interferometric microscopy.

Project description:Interferometric microscopy (IM) can provide complex field information of the biological samples with high spatial and temporal resolution with virtually no photodamage. Measuring wavelength-dependent information in particular has a wide range of applications from cell and tissue refractometry to the cellular biophysical measurements. IM measurements at multiple wavelengths are typically associated with a loss in temporal resolution, field of view, stability, sensitivity, and may involve using expensive equipment such as tunable filters or spatial light modulators. Here, we present a novel and simple design for an interferometric microscope that provides single-shot off-axis interferometric measurements at two wavelengths by encoding the two spectral images at two orthogonal spatial frequencies that allows clean separation of information in the Fourier space with no resolution loss. We demonstrated accurate simultaneous quantification of polystyrene bead refractive indices at two wavelengths.

Single-shot 3D coherent diffractive imaging of core-shell nanoparticles with elemental specificity.

Project description:We report 3D coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) of Au/Pd core-shell nanoparticles with 6.1 nm spatial resolution with elemental specificity. We measured single-shot diffraction patterns of the nanoparticles using intense x-ray free electron laser pulses. By exploiting the curvature of the Ewald sphere and the symmetry of the nanoparticle, we reconstructed the 3D electron density of 34 core-shell structures from these diffraction patterns. To extract 3D structural information beyond the diffraction signal, we implemented a super-resolution technique by taking advantage of CDI's quantitative reconstruction capabilities. We used high-resolution model fitting to determine the Au core size and the Pd shell thickness to be 65.0 ± 1.0 nm and 4.0 ± 0.5 nm, respectively. We also identified the 3D elemental distribution inside the nanoparticles with an accuracy of 3%. To further examine the model fitting procedure, we simulated noisy diffraction patterns from a Au/Pd core-shell model and a solid Au model and confirmed the validity of the method. We anticipate this super-resolution CDI method can be generally used for quantitative 3D imaging of symmetrical nanostructures with elemental specificity.

The fluence-resolution relationship in holographic and coherent diffractive imaging.

Project description:This work presents a numerical study of the fluence-resolution behaviour for two coherent lensless X-ray imaging techniques. To this end the fluence-resolution relationship of inline near-field holography and far-field coherent diffractive imaging are compared in numerical experiments. To achieve this, the phase reconstruction is carried out using iterative phase-retrieval algorithms on simulated noisy data. Using the incident photon fluence on the specimen as the control parameter, the achievable resolution for two example phantoms (cell and bitmap) is studied. The results indicate the superior performance of holography compared with coherent diffractive imaging, for the same fluence and phase-reconstruction procedure.

Interferometric single-shot parity measurement in InAs-Al hybrid devices.

Project description:The fusion of non-Abelian anyons is a fundamental operation in measurement-only topological quantum computation1. In one-dimensional topological superconductors (1DTSs)2-4, fusion amounts to a determination of the shared fermion parity of Majorana zero modes (MZMs). Here we introduce a device architecture5 that is compatible with future tests of fusion rules. We implement a single-shot interferometric measurement of fermion parity6-11 in indium arsenide-aluminium heterostructures with a gate-defined superconducting nanowire12-14. The interferometer is formed by tunnel-coupling the proximitized nanowire to quantum dots. The nanowire causes a state-dependent shift of the quantum capacitance of these quantum dots of up to 1 fF. Our quantum-capacitance measurements show flux h/2e-periodic bimodality with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 1 in 3.6 μs at optimal flux values. From the time traces of the quantum-capacitance measurements, we extract a dwell time in the two associated states that is longer than 1 ms at in-plane magnetic fields of approximately 2 T. We discuss the interpretation of our measurements in terms of both topologically trivial and non-trivial origins. The large capacitance shift and long poisoning time enable a parity measurement with an assignment error probability of 1%.

Live Cell Imaging by Single-Shot Common-Path Wide Field-of-View Reflective Digital Holographic Microscope.

Project description:Quantitative phase imaging by digital holographic microscopy (DHM) is a nondestructive and label-free technique that has been playing an indispensable role in the fields of science, technology, and biomedical imaging. The technique is competent in imaging and analyzing label-free living cells and investigating reflective surfaces. Herein, we introduce a new configuration of a wide field-of-view single-shot common-path off-axis reflective DHM for the quantitative phase imaging of biological cells that leverages several advantages, including being less-vibration sensitive to external perturbations due to its common-path configuration, also being compact in size, simple in optical design, highly stable, and cost-effective. A detailed description of the proposed DHM system, including its optical design, working principle, and capability for phase imaging, is presented. The applications of the proposed system are demonstrated through quantitative phase imaging results obtained from the reflective surface (USAF resolution test target) as well as transparent samples (living plant cells). The proposed system could find its applications in the investigation of several biological specimens and the optical metrology of micro-surfaces.

A versatile diffractive maskless lithography for single-shot and serial microfabrication.

Project description:We demonstrate a diffractive maskless lithographic system that is capable of rapidly performing both serial and single-shot micropatterning. Utilizing the diffractive properties of phase holograms displayed on a spatial light modulator, arbitrary intensity distributions were produced to form two and three dimensional micropatterns/structures in a variety of substrates. A straightforward graphical user interface was implemented to allow users to load templates and change patterning modes within the span of a few minutes. A minimum resolution of approximately 700 nm is demonstrated for both patterning modes, which compares favorably to the 232 nm resolution limit predicted by the Rayleigh criterion. The presented method is rapid and adaptable, allowing for the parallel fabrication of microstructures in photoresist as well as the fabrication of protein microstructures that retain functional activity.

[Diffusion-Weighted Imaging as a Stand-Alone Breast Imaging Modality].

Project description:Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW MRI) is a fast unenhanced technique that shows promise as a stand-alone modality for cancer screening and characterization. Currently, DW MRI may have lower sensitivity than that of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI as a standalone modality for breast cancer detection but superior to that of mammography, which may provide a useful alternative for supplemental screening. Standardized acquisition and interpretation of DW MRI can improve the image quality and reduce the variability of the results. Furthermore, high-resolution DW MRI, with advanced techniques and postprocessing, will facilitate better detection and characterization of subcentimeter cancers and reduce false-negatives and false-positives. Future results from ongoing prospective multicenter clinical trials using standardized and optimized protocols will facilitate the use of DW MRI as a stand-alone modality.

Holographic multiplexing metasurface with twisted diffractive neural network.

Project description:As the cornerstone of AI generated content, data drives human-machine interaction and is essential for developing sophisticated deep learning agents. Nevertheless, the associated data storage poses a formidable challenge from conventional energy-intensive planar storage, high maintenance cost, and the susceptibility to electromagnetic interference. In this work, we introduce the concept of metasurface disk, meta-disk, to expand the capacity limits of optical holographic storage by leveraging uncorrelated structural twist. We develop a physical twisted neural network to describe the optical behavior of the meta-disk and conduct a comprehensive lateral error analysis, where the meta-disk stores large volumes of information through internal structural multiplexing. Two-layer 640 µm x 640 µm meta-disk is sufficient to store over hundreds of high-fidelity images with SSIM of 0.8. By harnessing advanced three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, optical holographic storage is experimentally demonstrated with Pancharatnam-Berry metasurfaces. Our technology provides essential backing for the next generation of optical storage, display, encryption, and multifunctional optical analog computing.
