The construction of a biomass component interaction model based on research into the hydrothermal liquefaction of sewage sludge.

ABSTRACT: Sewage sludge (SS), a hazardous solid waste with a high water and pollutant content, should be disposed of correctly. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) shows tremendous potential to treat organic matter with substantial water content like SS. In this paper, we examined the impact of key factors on the characteristics and yield of bio-oil during HTL of SS. We clarified the impacts of each component on the yield through model compounds based on that and constructed a component additivity model for forecasting the bio-oil yield from biomass with complex component composition. In the reactions of the model compounds, cellulose showed synergistic interaction with protein and alkali lignin in the bio-oil yield but lipids showed antagonistic effects with protein and alkaline lignin. The co-HTL results of these binary mixtures improved our model and further clarified the reaction mechanism of HTL of SS.

Understanding the Upgrading of Sewage Sludge-Derived Hydrothermal Liquefaction Biocrude via Advanced Characterization.

Project description:Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) can thermochemically transform sewage sludge into a biocrude with high energy content, high chemical complexity, and high O and N content. The development of an efficient upgrading process for such complex feedstocks necessitates detailed knowledge of the molecular composition and the specific heteroatom-containing compounds to understand and optimize the hydrotreating reactions. In this study, we present the upgrading of sewage sludge-derived HTL biocrude via a two-stage hydrotreatment process and perform advanced chemical characterization of the feedstock, intermediate, and final upgraded products with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS). We show that hydrotreatment significantly improves the quality of the oil, primarily succeeding in cracking the heavy molecules and removing the sulfur- and oxygen-containing components. FTICR-MS analysis shows that the HTL biocrude has a high concentration of fatty acid amides that readily lose their oxygen and nitrogen during hydrotreating and are converted into saturated hydrocarbons, whereas the aromatic OxNy compounds are converted into N1 and N2 classes, which are more resistant to hydrotreating. We also demonstrate that the upgraded HTL oil can be successfully blended with intermediate refinery streams, such as vacuum gas oil (VGO), for further co-processing to in-spec fuels in conventional processes. This provides an alternative route to introduce renewable carbon in existing fossil-based refineries.

Component additivity model for plastics-biomass mixtures during hydrothermal liquefaction in sub-, near-, and supercritical water.

Project description:We produced oils via hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of binary mixtures of biomass components (e.g., lignin, cellulose, starch) with different plastics and binary mixtures of plastics themselves. Cellulose, starch, and lignin demonstrated synergistic interactions (i.e., enhanced oil yields) with the plastics tested (polypropylene, polycarbonate, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate). Polystyrene exhibited synergy during HTL with the three other plastics as did polypropylene during HTL with PET or PC. We used the experimental results to develop the first component-additivity model that predicts the oil yields from HTL of biomass-plastic and plastic-plastic mixtures. The model accounts for interactions among and between biomass components and plastic components in sub-, near-, and supercritical water. The model predicts 88% of 48 published oil yields from HTL experiments with mixtures containing plastics to within 10 wt%.

Catalytic liquefaction of sewage sludge to small molecular weight chemicals.

Project description:The catalytic hydrotreatment of sewage sludge, the wet solid byproducts from wastewater treatment plants, using supported Ir, Pt, Pd, Ru catalysts had been investigated with different solvent conditions. Reactions were carried out in a batch set-up at elevated temperatures (400 °C) using a hydrogen donor (formic acid (FA) in isopropanol (IPA) or hydrogen gas), with sewage sludge obtained from different sampling places. Sewage sludge conversions of up to 83.72% were achieved using Pt/C, whereas the performance for the others catalysts is different and solvent had a strong effect on the conversion rate and product constitution. The sewage sludge oils were characterised using a range of analytical techniques (GC, GC-MS, GCxGC, GPC) and were shown to consist of monomers, mainly alkanes and higher oligomers.

Exploring hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of digested sewage sludge (DSS) at 5.3 L and 0.025 L bench scale using experimental design.

Project description:A common perspective within the prospect of a greener future is utilising our waste materials. One waste material of which the world has abundant resources, and where we will keep having resources, is sewage sludge. This waste material is getting an increased focus, and is commonly utilised by anaerobic digestion processes for methane production. This leaves a bioresidue of digested sewage sludge (DSS). In this study, DSS is submitted to hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) to produce bio-oil. The studied process includes upscaling as well as considering the effects of temperature, reaction medium of water or ethanol, degree of reactor filling and stirring rate. Promising results are found as high oil yields are obtained also after upscaling. The results reported here show that stirring reduces the need of high temperatures during HTL, providing energy savings that are promising for further upscaling. In addition, a total of 18 compounds are identified and semi-quantified, showing an abundance of fatty acids and fatty acid derivatives within the oil, encouraging further studies towards separation of said fatty acids for use as biodiesel.

Hydrothermal liquefaction of sewage sludge anaerobic digestate for bio-oil production: Screening the effects of temperature, residence time and KOH catalyst.

Project description:Due to sewage sludge being an abundant biobased resource, and with the number of biogas plants utilizing sewage sludge increasing, digested sewage sludge (DSS) is a promising feedstock for producing bio-oil. This study uses DSS from a biogas plant to produce bio-oil in a hydrothermal liquefaction process adjusting time from 2 to 6 hours, temperature from 280 to 380°C and the presence of a base as a depolymerization agent and potential catalyst. High conversion yields are obtained, with the maximum of 58 wt% on a dry, ash free basis and an energy recovery of up to 94%. The oils contain compounds with a potential for utilization as biofuels and building blocks, especially fatty acids as biodiesel feedstock and biobased phenols, glycols and aliphatic alcohols.

A perspective on hydrothermal processing of sewage sludge.

Project description:The US annually produces 79 million dry tons of liquid organic waste including sewage sludge. Anaerobic digestion can only reduce the sludge volume by 50% in mass, leaving the other half as a growing waste management and hygienic problem. Hydrothermal processing (HTP), a set of several chemical digestion processes, could be used to convert sewage sludge into valuable products and minimize potential environmental pollution risks. Specifically, hydrothermal carbonization and hydrothermal liquefaction have been extensively studied to sustainably manage sludge. Two of the main reasons for this are the high upscalability of HTP for public waste management and that it is estimated that HTP can recover eleven times more energy from waste products than landfilling. An integration of HTP with anaerobic digestion or recycling the soluble organics (in the HTP aqueous products) into the HTP process could lead to a higher overall rate of energy recovery for municipal sewage sludge.

Sewage sludge hydrochar characterization and valorization via hydrothermal processing for 3D printing.

Project description:Sewage sludge, a biosolid product of wastewater processing, is an often-overlooked source of rich organic waste. Hydrothermal processing has shown promise in converting sewage sludge into valorized materials with potential application in biofuels, asphalt binders, and bioplastics. Here we characterize the physicochemical properties of hydrochar, the carbonaceous solid phase product of hydrothermal processing, and investigate its use as bio-based filler in additive manufacturing. We find that the presence of metallic and metalloid dopants in sewage sludge, which are not typically found in biomass wastes, yields unusual results in organic material processing such as decreased graphitic ordering after thermal activation. We further find that addition of hydrochar generally decreases mechanical performance of additive manufacturing composites, however, some properties such as toughness can be recovered with nature-inspired architecting into gyroid microstructures. These findings demonstrate that more investigation is required to optimally valorize sewage sludge and similarly disordered waste streams.

Effect of temperature on hydrothermal liquefaction of high lipids and carbohydrates content municipal primary sludge.

Project description:The study assessed the valorisation of primary sludge through HTL and the influence of temperature on the product distribution. The experiments were conducted at different temperatures, 30 min reaction time, and 100 rpm stirring rate. The maximum yield of biocrude produced was 39.47% at 270 °C. The best yield of oils was 23.96% at 300 °C. The lowest yield of asphaltenes was 12.50% at 240 °C. HHV for biocrude were always between 39 and 41 MJ/kg, close to petroleum. Best energy recovery for biocrude was 82% at 270 °C.
