Enhancing the Mechanical Properties of Poly(vinyl alcohol) Fibers by Lithium Iodide Addition.

ABSTRACT: The effect of lithium iodide (LiI) on the mechanical strength, properties, and molecular orientation of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) fibers spun by wet spinning and then heat-stretched was studied. The stretchability of LiI-PVA fibers was improved, and the rupture during stretching was suppressed compared to PVA fibers. In addition, the tensile strength and elastic modulus of the thermally stretched fibers have been significantly improved. It was also found that the addition of LiI improves the molecular orientation of PVA. This was achieved because LiI reduced the hydrogen bonds between the molecular chains of PVA, resulting in reduced crystallinity. Most of the LiI in the fiber could be removed by a coagulation bath and washing during the spinning process. This means that LiI is eventually removed, and the heat-treatment strengthens the hydrogen bonds, resulting in excellent mechanical strength.

Correlation between Mechanical and Morphological Properties of Polyphenol-Laden Xanthan Gum/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Composite Cryogels.

Project description:This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the synthesis parameters and the incorporation of natural polyphenolic extract within hydrogel networks on the mechanical and morphological properties of physically cross-linked xanthan gum/poly(vinyl alcohol) (XG/PVA) composite hydrogels prepared by multiple cryo-structuration steps. In this context, the toughness, compressive strength, and viscoelasticity of polyphenol-loaded XG/PVA composite hydrogels in comparison with those of the neat polymer networks were investigated by uniaxial compression tests and steady and oscillatory measurements under small deformation conditions. The swelling behavior, the contact angle values, and the morphological features revealed by SEM and AFM analyses were well correlated with the uniaxial compression and rheological results. The compressive tests revealed an enhancement of the network rigidity by increasing the number of cryogenic cycles. On the other hand, tough and flexible polyphenol-loaded composite films were obtained for a weight ratio between XG and PVA of 1:1 and 10 v/v% polyphenol. The gel behavior was confirmed for all composite hydrogels, as the elastic modulus (G') was significantly greater than the viscous modulus (G″) for the entire frequency range.

Mechanical Integrity Degradation and Control of All-Solid-State Lithium Battery with Physical Aging Poly (Vinyl Alcohol)-Based Electrolyte.

Project description:Ensuring the material durability of an electrolyte is a prerequisite for the long-term service of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). Herein, to investigate the mechanical integrity of a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) in an ASSB upon electrochemical operation, we have implemented a sequence of quasi-static uniaxial tension and stress relaxation tests on a lithium perchlorate-doped poly (vinyl alcohol) electrolyte, and then discussed the viscoelastic behavior as well as the strength of SPE film during the physical aging process. On this basis, a continuum electrochemical-mechanical model is established to evaluate the stress evolution and mechanical detriment of aging electrolytes in an ASSB at a discharge state. It is found that the measured elastic modulus, yield stress, and characteristic relaxation time boost with the prolonged aging time. Meanwhile, the shape factor for the classical time-decay equation and the tensile rupture strength are independent of the aging history. Accordingly, the momentary relaxation modulus can be predicted in terms of the time-aging time superposition principle. Furthermore, the peak tensile stress in SPE film for the full discharged ASSB will significantly increase as the aging proceeds due to the stiffening of the electrolyte composite. It may result in the structure failure of the cell system. However, this negative effect can be suppressed by the suggested method, which is given by a 2D map under different lithiation rates and relative thicknesses of the electrolyte. These findings can advance the knowledge of SPE degradation and provide insights into reliable all-solid-state electrochemical device applications.

Simultaneously improving the mechanical and electrical properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) composites by high-quality graphitic nanoribbons.

Project description:Although carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown great potential for enhancing the performance of polymer matrices, their reinforcement role still needs to be further improved. Here we implement a structural modification of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) to fully utilize their fascinating mechanical and electrical properties via longitudinal splitting of MWCNTs into graphitic nanoribbons (GNRs). This nanofiller design strategy is advantageous for surface functionalization, strong interface adhesion as well as boosting the interfacial contact area without losing the intrinsic graphitic structure. The obtained GNRs have planar geometry, quasi-1D structure and high-quality crystallinity, which outperforms their tubular counterparts, delivering a superior load-bearing efficiency and conductive network for realizing a synchronous improvement of the mechanical and electrical properties of a PVA-based composite. Compared to PVA/CNTs, the tensile strength, Young's modulus and electrical conductivity of the PVA/GNR composite at a filling concentration of 3.6 vol.% approach 119.1?MPa, 5.3?GPa and 2.4?×?10-4 S m-1, with increases of 17%, 32.5% and 5.9 folds, respectively. The correlated mechanics is further rationalized by finite element analysis, the generalized shear-lag theory and the fracture mechanisms.

Synthesis, Physical, Mechanical and Antibacterial Properties of Nanocomposites Based on Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Graphene Oxide-Silver Nanoparticles.

Project description:The design of new materials with antimicrobial properties has emerged in response to the need for preventing and controlling the growth of pathogenic microorganisms without the use of antibiotics. In this study, partially reduced graphene oxide decorated with silver nanoparticles (GO-AgNPs) was incorporated as a reinforcing filler with antibacterial properties to poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) for preparation of poly(vinyl alcohol)/graphene oxide-silver nanoparticles nanocomposites (PVA/GO-AgNPs). AgNPs, spherical in shape and with an average size of 3.1 nm, were uniformly anchored on the partially reduced GO surface. PVA/GO-AgNPs nanocomposites showed exfoliated structures with improved thermal stability, tensile properties and water resistance compared to neat PVA. The glass transition and crystallization temperatures of the polymer matrix increased with the incorporation of the hybrid. The nanocomposites displayed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in a filler content- and time-dependent manner. S. aureus showed higher susceptibility to PVA/GO-AgNPs films than E. coli. Inhibitory activity was higher when bacterial cells were in contact with nanocomposite films than when in contact with leachates coming out of the films. GO-AgNPs based PVA nanocomposites could find application as wound dressings for wound healing and infection prevention.

The Impact of Reactive Ionic Liquids Addition on the Physicochemical and Sorption Properties of Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)-Based Films.

Project description:A new type of hybrid polymeric-based film containing 1-(1,3-diethoxy-1,3-dioxopropan-2-ylo)-3-methylimidazolium bromide (RIL1_Br) and 1-(2-etoxy-2-oxoethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bromide (RIL2_Br) reactive ionic liquids was elaborated. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based films with 9-33 wt % of RILs were subsequently characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and TGA-FTIR. PVA-RIL films were also studied in tensile tests, contact angle and sorption measurements. RIL incorporation enhanced thermal and mechanical stability of PVA membranes due to the hydrogen bonds between RILs and polymer chains. Membrane swelling behavior in water (H2O), ethanol (EtOH), and propan-2-ol (IPA) and the kinetics of water sorption process revealed that PVA-RILs membranes possess the highest affinity towards water. It was pointed out that both the RIL type and the RIL amount in the polymer matrix have significant influence on the membrane swelling behavior and the water sorption kinetics.

Enhanced Mechanical and Antibacterial Properties of Nanocomposites Based on Poly(vinyl Alcohol) and Biopolymer-Derived Reduced Graphene Oxide.

Project description:Functionalized graphene-polymer nanocomposites have gained significant attention for their enhanced mechanical, thermal, and antibacterial properties, but the requirement of multi-step processes or hazardous reducing agents to functionalize graphene limits their current applications. Here, we present a single-step synthesis of thermally reduced graphene oxide (TrGO) based on shellac, which is a low-cost biopolymer that can be employed to produce poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/TrGO nanocomposites (PVA-TrGO). The concentration of TrGO varied from 0.1 to 2.0 wt.%, and the critical concentration of homogeneous TrGO dispersion was observed to be 1.5 wt.%, below which strong interfacial molecular interactions between the TrGO and the PVA matrix resulted in improved thermal and mechanical properties. At 1.5 wt.% filler loading, the tensile strength and modulus of the PVA-TrGO nanocomposite were increased by 98.7% and 97.4%, respectively, while the storage modulus was increased by 69%. Furthermore, the nanocomposite was 96% more effective in preventing bacterial colonization relative to the neat PVA matrix. The present findings indicate that TrGO can be considered a promising material for potential applications in biomedical devices.

PEG-PVA-Ad polymer forms micelles via self-assembly at concentrations as low as 26 mg L-1. These polymer micelles can be destroyed by low pH or the addition of ?-CD.

Enhancing the Mechanical and Electrical Properties of Poly(Vinyl Chloride)-Based Conductive Nanocomposites by Zinc Oxide Nanorods.

Project description:A simple approach to decorate multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)?reduced graphene oxide (RGO) hybrid nanoparticles with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods is developed to improve the electrical and mechanical properties of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)/MWCNT?RGO composites. The ZnO nanorods act as "joint" in three-dimensional (3D) MWCNT?RGO networks and the hybrid particles strongly interact with PVC chains via p-? stacking, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions, which we confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman analysis. By introducing the ZnO nanorods, the RGO?ZnO?MWCNT hybrid particles increased 160% in capacitance compared with MWCNT?RGO hybrids. Moreover, the addition of RGO?ZnO?MWCNT to PVC resulted in the mechanical properties of PVC being enhanced by 30.8% for tensile strength and 60.9% for Young's modulus at the loadings of 2.0 weight percent (wt.%) and 1.0 wt.%, respectively. Meanwhile, the electrical conductivity of PVC increased by 11 orders of magnitude, from 1 × 10-15 S/m to 1 × 10-4 S/m for MWCNT?ZnO?RGO loading at 5.0 wt.%.

Project description:Nacre, the gold standard for biomimicry, provides an excellent example and guideline for assembling high-performance composites. Inspired by the layered structure and extraordinary strength and toughness of natural nacre, nacre-like nanolignocellulose/poly (vinyl alcohol)/TiO2 composites possessed the similar layered structure of natural nacre were constructed through hot-pressing process. Poly (vinyl alcohol) and TiO2 nanoparticles have been used as nanofillers to improve the mechanical performance and synchronously endow the superior photocatalytic activity of the composites. This research would be provided a promising candidate for the photooxidation of volatile organic compounds also combined with outstanding mechanical property.

Manufacturing scale-up of electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol) fibers containing tenofovir for vaginal drug delivery.

Project description:Electrospun fibers containing antiretroviral drugs have recently been investigated as a new dosage form for topical microbicides against HIV-1. However, little work has been done to evaluate the scalability of the fiber platform for pharmaceutical production of medical fabrics. Scalability and cost-effectiveness are essential criteria in developing fibers as a practical platform for use as a microbicide and for translation to clinical use. To address this critical gap in the development of fiber-based vaginal dosage forms, we assessed the scale-up potential of drug-eluting fibers delivering tenofovir (TFV), a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor and lead compound for topical HIV-1 chemoprophylaxis. Here we describe the process of free-surface electrospinning to scale up production of TFV fibers, and evaluate key attributes of the finished products such as fiber morphology, drug crystallinity, and drug loading and release kinetics. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) containing up to 60 wt% TFV was successfully electrospun into fibers using a nozzle-free production-scale electrospinning instrument. Actual TFV loading in fibers increased with increasing weight percent TFV in solution, and encapsulation efficiency was improved by maintaining TFV solubility and preventing drug sedimentation during batch processing. These results define important solution and processing parameters for scale-up production of TFV drug-eluting fibers by wire electrospinning, which may have significant implications for pharmaceutical manufacturing of fiber-based medical fabrics for clinical use.
