AMPA glutamate receptors (AMPARs), the primary mediators of excitatory neurotransmission in the brain, are either GluA2 subunit-containing and thus Ca<sup>2+</sup>-impermeable, or GluA2-lacking and Ca<sup>2+</sup>-permeable<sup>1</sup>.
