One-dimensional carbon chains encapsulated in hollandite.

ABSTRACT: One-dimensional carbon chains are highly reactive allotropes that are stabilized inside the protective environment of carbon nanotubes. Here we show that carbon chains can be encapsulated in metal oxides containing open structural channels, exemplified by hollandite α-MnO₂. The α-MnO₂ channels stabilize cumulene chains due to their structural commensurability, whereas the triple bonds in polyyne chains exhibit excessive steric repulsion to the oxide ions bordering the channel. Cumulene exhibits an interaction energy of only 0.065 eV per carbon atom, obtained by first-principles calculations, which is significantly more favorable than for encapsulation in a similarly sized carbon nanotube. Encapsulation of carbon chains is associated with lateral expansion of the α-MnO₂ channel and polarization of the manganese and oxygen charge densities adjacent to the chains. Accordingly, the interaction energy is governed by a balance between van der Waals attraction and steric repulsion between the materials.

Hydrazine-solvothermal methods to synthesize polymeric thioarsenates from one-dimensional chains to a three-dimensional framework.

Project description:A series of polymeric Mn(ii)-thioarsenates [Mn(en)3] n [(N2H4)2Mn6(μ6-S)(μ-N2H4)2(μ3-AsS3)4] n (1), [N2H5] n [{Mn(μ-N2H4)2(μ-AsS4)}·0.5en] n (2), [Mn(μ-trien){Mn(μ-N2H4)(μ-AsS3)}2] n (3), [{Mn(N2H4)}2(μ-N2H4)2{Mn(μ-N2H4)2(μ-AsS3)2}] n (4), [Mn3(μ-N2H4)6(μ3-AsS4)(μ2-AsS4)] n (5), and [Mn(NH3)6] n [{Mn(NH3)(μ-AsS4)}2] n (6) were synthesized using a hydrazine-solvothermal method. The thioarsenate units AsS3 and AsS4 coordinate to Mn(ii) ions with variable coordination modes, forming a Mn-As-S ternary cluster (1), chains (2, 4-6), and layers (3), respectively. The hydrazine molecules act as inter-cluster, intra-chain and intra-layer bridging ligands to join the Mn(ii) ions, resulting in hydrazine hybrid 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D Mn(ii)-thioarsenate moieties in 1-5. Compounds 1-6 exhibit tunable semiconducting band gaps varying in the range of 2.19-2.47 eV. Compound 1 displays stronger antiferromagnetic coupling interactions than that of compound 2.

Superconductivity in Ta3Pd3Te14 with quasi-one-dimensional PdTe2 chains.

Project description:We report bulk superconductivity at 1.0 K in a low-dimensional ternary telluride Ta3Pd3Te14 containing edge-sharing PdTe2 chains along crystallographic b axis, similar to the recently discovered superconductor Ta4Pd3Te16. The electronic heat capacity data show an obvious anomaly at the transition temperature, which indicates bulk superconductivity. The specific-heat jump is ΔC/(γ(n)T(c)) ≈ 1.35, suggesting a weak coupling scenario. By measuring the low-temperature thermal conductivity, we conclude that Ta3Pd3Te14 is very likely a dirty s-wave superconductor. The emergence of superconductivity in Ta3Pd3Te14 with a lower T(c), compared to that of Ta4Pd3Te16, may be attributed to the lower density of states.

Orbital topological edge states and phase transitions in one-dimensional acoustic resonator chains.

Project description:Topological phases of matter have attracted significant attention in recent years, due to the unusual robustness of their response to defects and disorder. Various research efforts have been exploring classical and quantum topological wave phenomena in engineered materials, in which different degrees of freedom (DoFs) - for the most part based on broken crystal symmetries associated with pseudo-spins - induce synthetic gauge fields that support topological phases and unveil distinct forms of wave propagation. However, spin is not the only viable option to induce topological effects. Intrinsic orbital DoFs in spinless systems may offer a powerful alternative platform, mostly unexplored to date. Here we reveal orbital-selective wave-matter interactions in acoustic systems supporting multiple orbital DoFs, and report the experimental demonstration of disorder-immune orbital-induced topological edge states in a zigzag acoustic 1D spinless lattice. This work expands the study of topological phases based on orbitals, paving the way to explore other orbital-dependent phenomena in spinless systems.

Electrokinetic assembly of one-dimensional nanoparticle chains with cucurbit[7]uril controlled subnanometer junctions.

Project description:One-dimensional (1D) nanoparticle chains with defined nanojunctions are of strong interest due to their plasmonic and electronic properties. A strategy is presented for the assembly of 1D gold-nanoparticle chains with fixed and rigid cucurbit[n]uril-nanojunctions of 9 Å. The process is electrokinetically accomplished using a nanoporous polycarbonate membrane and controlled by the applied voltage, the nanoparticle/CB[n] concentration ratio, time and temperature. The spatial structure and time-resolved analysis of chain plasmonics confirm a growth mechanism at the membrane nanopores.

Fabrication of one-dimensional Ag/multiwalled carbon nanotube nano-composite.

Project description:Composite made of multiwalled carbon nanotubes coated with silver was fabricated by an electroless deposition process. The thickness of silver layer is about 40 to 60 nm, characterized as nano-crystalline with (111) crystal orientation along the nanotube's axial direction. The characterization of silver/carbon nanotube [Ag/CNT] nanowire has shown the large current carrying capability, and the electric conductivity is similar to the pure silver nanowires that Ag/CNT would be promising as building blocks for integrated circuits.PACS: 81.05.uj, carbon nanotubes, carbon-based materials, diamond/nanocarbon composites.

Design of dispersant for highly concentrated one-dimensional Nb2Se9 inorganic molecular chains from bulk crystal.

Project description:We determined the optimum dispersant to separate bulk Nb2Se9 material into 1D chain units. The Nb2Se9, which had a negative zeta potential (-43.3?mV), showed acidic characteristics and strongly bonded with the amine head of octadecyl amine through a charge transfer (from the amine to Se atoms) reaction. The steric hindrance of the octadecyl tail resulted in excellent dispersion of Nb2Se9 (down to nanometre-sized mono-chains).

Atomic-Scale Time-Resolved Imaging of Krypton Dimers, Chains and Transition to a One-Dimensional Gas.

Project description:Single-atom dynamics of noble-gas elements have been investigated using time-resolved transmission electron microscopy (TEM), with direct observation providing for a deeper understanding of chemical bonding, reactivity, and states of matter at the nanoscale. We report on a nanoscale system consisting of endohedral fullerenes encapsulated within single-walled carbon nanotubes ((Kr@C60)@SWCNT), capable of the delivery and release of krypton atoms on-demand, via coalescence of host fullerene cages under the action of the electron beam (in situ) or heat (ex situ). The state and dynamics of Kr atoms were investigated by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Kr atom positions were measured precisely using aberration-corrected high-resolution TEM (AC-HRTEM), aberration-corrected scanning TEM (AC-STEM), and single-atom spectroscopic imaging (STEM-EELS). The electron beam drove the formation of 2Kr@C120 capsules, in which van der Waals Kr2 and transient covalent [Kr2]+ bonding states were identified. Thermal coalescence led to the formation of longer coalesced nested nanotubes containing more loosely bound Krn chains (n = 3-6). In some instances, delocalization of Kr atomic positions was confirmed by STEM analysis as the transition to a one-dimensional (1D) gas, as Kr atoms were constrained to only one degree of translational freedom within long, well-annealed, nested nanotubes. Such nested nanotube structures were investigated by Raman spectroscopy. This material represents a highly compressed and dimensionally constrained 1D gas stable under ambient conditions. Direct atomic-scale imaging has revealed elusive bonding states and a previously unseen 1D gaseous state of matter of this noble gas element, demonstrating TEM to be a powerful tool in the discovery of chemistry at the single-atom level.

Hybrid one-dimensional nanostructures: one-pot preparation of nanoparticle chains via directed self-assembly of in situ synthesized discrete Au nanoparticles.

Project description:The fabrication of well-defined one-dimensional (1D) arrays is becoming a challenge for the development of the next generation of advanced nanodevices. Herein, a simple concept is proposed for the in situ synthesis and self-assembly of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into 1D arrays via a one-step process. The results demonstrated the formation of nanoparticle chains (NPC) with high aspect ratio based on discrete Au nanoparticles stabilized by short thiol ligands. A model was proposed to explain the self-assembly based on the investigation of several parameters such as pH, solvent, temperature, and nature of the ligand on the 1D assembly formation. Hydrogen bonding was identified as a key factor to direct the self-assembly of the hybrid organic-inorganic nanomaterials into the well-defined 1D nanostructures. This simple and cost-effective concept could potentially be extended to the fabrication of a variety of hybrid 1D nanostructures possessing unique physical properties leading to a wide range of applications including catalysis, bionanotechnology, nanoelectronics, and photonics.

Three-Dimensional Carbon Allotropes Comprising Phenyl Rings and Acetylenic Chains in sp+sp(2) Hybrid Networks.

Project description:We here identify by ab initio calculations a new type of three-dimensional (3D) carbon allotropes that consist of phenyl rings connected by linear acetylenic chains in sp+sp(2) bonding networks. These structures are constructed by inserting acetylenic or diacetylenic bonds into an all sp(2)-hybridized rhombohedral polybenzene lattice, and the resulting 3D phenylacetylene and phenyldiacetylene nets comprise a 12-atom and 18-atom rhombohedral primitive unit cells in the symmetry, which are characterized as the 3D chiral crystalline modification of 2D graphyne and graphdiyne, respectively. Simulated phonon spectra reveal that these structures are dynamically stable. Electronic band calculations indicate that phenylacetylene is metallic, while phenyldiacetylene is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap of 0.58?eV. The present results establish a new type of carbon phases and offer insights into their outstanding structural and electronic properties.

In-situ one-step synthesis of carbon-encapsulated naked magnetic metal nanoparticles conducted without additional reductants and agents.

Project description:C-encapsulated highly pure Ni, Co, and Fe magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs/C) were synthesized by an innovative one-step in-situ plasma in liquid method (solution plasma processing, SPP) without any additional reductants, agents, or treatment. Successful encapsulation of MNPs was demonstrated by using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry and cyclic voltammetry techniques. The obtained X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy images corresponded to MNPs with average diameters of 5?nm and good crystalline structure. The C capsules with spherical shapes (containing onion-like layers) were characterized by uniform sizes (ranging from 20?nm to 30?nm) and chain-like morphologies. The synthesized MNPs/C exhibited superparamagnetic properties at room temperature and might be utilized in data storage, biomedical, and energy applications since various NPs (including bimetallic ones) could be easily prepared by changing working electrodes. This study shows the potential of SPP to be a candidate for the next-generation synthesis method of NPs/C.
