The Japanese version of the occupational future time perspective scale: A validation study.

ABSTRACT:

Objective

This study aimed to develop and validate a Japanese version of the Occupational Future Time Perspective scale (OFTP-J) and assess its structural validity, construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability among Japanese workers.

Methods

The online survey was conducted with 2046 participants who met the eligibility criteria. The Japanese version of the OFTP scale was developed through translation and back-translation processes. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed to evaluate the structural validity. Pearson's correlations were computed to assess construct validity, and Cronbach's alpha coefficients were calculated to determine internal consistency. Test-retest reliability was examined using Cohen's weighted kappa coefficients and intraclass correlation coefficients.

Results

The confirmatory factor analysis supported an 8-item model with three factors (i.e., focus on opportunities, perceived remaining time, and focus on limitations) for the Japanese version of the OFTP scale. The scale demonstrated high internal consistency, with Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranging from 0.81 to 0.92. Construct validity was supported by significant correlations between the OFTP scale and its subscales, possible antecedents (age, self-rated health, and job control), and possible outcomes (learning goal orientation, job crafting, and work engagement). Test-retest reliability was confirmed with moderate agreement.

Conclusions

The OFTP-J was found to be reliable and valid. It can be used to measure OFTP among Japanese workers and facilitate comparative research with the original English version. The OFTP-J provides valuable insights into the learning motivation and work engagement of the aging workforce.

Project description:BackgroundThe objectives of this study were to develop a Japanese version of the Hyperarousal Scale (HAS-J) and investigate its factor structure, reliability, and validity, as well as to calculate a cutoff score for the HAS-J and assess different levels of hyperarousal in insomnia patients and community dwellers.MethodsWe recruited 224 outpatients receiving insomnia treatment (56.3% women; mean age 51.7 ± 15.6 years) and 303 community dwellers aged 20 years or older (57.8% women; mean age 43.9 ± 15.2 years). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis was performed to examine the factor structure of the HAS-J. Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω were then used to test internal consistency. To examine the scale's validity, we determined correlations between the HAS-J and other indexes and compared HAS-J scores between insomnia patients and community dwellers. We also compared HAS-J scores between two community-dweller groups (normal and poor sleepers) and two insomnia patient groups (with and without alleviation after treatment).ResultsFollowing exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, a 20-item measure emerged comprising three factors: "Introspectiveness and Reactivity," "Neuroticism," and "Insomnia." Confirmatory factor analysis showed a generally good fit for the model of the three-factor structure suggested by the exploratory factor analysis loadings (χ2 (163) = 327.423, (p < 0.001), CFI = 0.914, GFI = 0.872, AGFI = 0.835, RMSEA = 0.067). In insomnia patients, internal consistency indicated sufficient reliability of the HAS-J. Correlation analysis showed weak to moderate positive correlations of the HAS-J score with other indexes, indicating concurrent validity of the HAS-J. All HAS-J subscale scores were significantly higher in insomnia patients than in community dwellers. Additionally, the total score in patients with alleviation of insomnia was comparable to that in poor sleepers and significantly higher than that in normal sleepers.ConclusionsThis study demonstrated the reliability and validity of the HAS-J, indicating that it is useful as a clinical scale of hyperarousal. The high level of hyperarousal in insomnia patients who were assessed to be in remission by the Insomnia Severity Index suggests a risk of insomnia recurrence in these patients.

Project description:BackgroundThe aim of this study was to examine the internal consistency, structural validity, and convergent/known-group validity of the Japanese version of the 42-item Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS-42).MethodsThe PWBS-42 includes six 7-item subscales designed to measure the following dimensions of eudaimonic psychological well-being: 1) autonomy, 2) environmental mastery, 3) personal growth, 4) positive relations with others, 5) purpose in life, and 6) self-acceptance. A questionnaire was administered to 2102 community residents in Tokyo aged 30 or over as a part of the Midlife in Japan (MIDJA) survey, in 2008. The internal consistency reliability was tested using Cronbach's α. Structural validity was examined using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Convergent validity was evaluated by calculating correlations of the Japanese PWBS-42 subscales with life satisfaction, negative affect, negative adjectives, positive affect, positive adjectives, self-esteem, and perceived stress scales.ResultsData from 1027 respondents (505 males and 522 females) were analyzed (valid response rate = 56.2%). Cronbach's α values ranged from 0.70 to 0.78 for five of the subscales, while that for purpose in life was lower (0.57). EFA yielded a five-factor structure: The first two factors consisted of negative and positive items mostly from the environmental mastery, purpose in life, and self-acceptance subscales. The third, fourth, and fifth factors consisted mostly of items from the positive relations with others, autonomy, and personal growth subscales, respectively. As hypothesized, the scores for life satisfaction, negative and positive affect/adjectives, self-esteem and perceived stress were significantly correlated with all subscales of the Japanese PWBS-42.ConclusionThe subscales of the Japanese version of the PWBS-42 showed accep. levels of reliability and support for convergent validity in the Japanese population. The factor structure was slightly different from the theoretical 6-factor model: items of three subscales (environmental mastery, purpose in life, and self-acceptance) loaded together on two factors. This finding may be interpreted in light of the interdependent self construal found in Japan in which these three components could be closely linked.
