Roadblocks in education amidst global crisis-A study based in India.

ABSTRACT:

Background

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic compelled the closure of educational institutions and forced students to complete nearly two years of schooling online, impacting their physical and emotional development tremendously. This exploratory study investigates the wide-ranging impact of online education on Indian students during the COVID-19 pandemic and discusses the challenges exacerbated by disparities in access to digital devices and reliable internet service. The paper also focuses on the physical and mental health issues that arose in student cohorts as a result of the abrupt shift to online learning, and investigates the relationship between students' socioeconomic status and the nature and frequency of health issues experienced by them.

Methods

A total of 832 respondents completed a 40-item survey that was administered online and through interviews. The paper analysed the impact of access to digital resources and teachers' training in information and communication technology on the perception of the quality of education provided by the institutions. We further analysed the impact of the adoption of online educational platforms on students' mental and physical health.

Results

The study found a positive relationship between the number of hours spent online, and the physical and mental health issues experienced by students. Participants reported an overall higher perception of stress and anxiety, loss of concentration, and dissatisfaction with the quality of education. Our data suggest that COVID-19 has exacerbated the digital divide.

Discussion

Urgent investments are needed to provide universal access to reliable internet services, and to develop a pedagogy that supports an agile and adaptable educational system, capable of providing effective learning and evaluation, while supporting students' physical and mental health.

Project description:ObjectivesVaccine hesitancy persists as a significant global health concern, especially during public health crises. This study aimed to explore factors influencing vaccination acceptance during a major public health crisis and establish a model of influencing factors.DesignA cross-sectional study.MethodsAn anonymous cross-sectional survey was conducted online, encompassing sociodemographic characteristics, anxiety levels, personal risk perception and attitudes towards vaccination acceptance. Data analysis was performed using t-tests, one-way analysis of variance and multiple linear regression techniques in IBM SPSS Statistics V.25.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA).ResultsA total of 3921 participants participated in the survey. The mean acceptance attitudes were above the moderate level (M=4.02, SD=0.51), the mean risk perception score was below the moderate level (M=2.66, SD=0.58), and the mean score on the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale was also below the moderate level (M=2.05, SD=0.53). The results showed that internal variables (gender, age, marital status, professional background, region) and external variables (average family income, distance from home to vaccination site, family medical background) were statistically significant (p<0.05). Gender, region, distance from home to the vaccination site, anxiety, family medical background, risk coping, emotional perception and psychological representation of unusual severity were identified as significant predictors of vaccination acceptance attitudes, with the model explaining 35% of the variance (R²= 0.35, adjusted R²= 0.33). Based on these results, we constructed a theoretical model of influencing factors for vaccine acceptance attitudes.ConclusionsDespite increased acceptance of vaccination during major public health events, factors that both support and hinder acceptance remain. Identifying these factors allows for effective disease control and informs the development of public health strategies and crisis response measures.

Project description:In 2020, COVID-19 mitigation measures, including lockdowns and travel bans to curtail disease transmission, inadvertently led to an "Anthropause" - a unique global pause to anthropogenic activities. While there was a spike in ecological studies measuring Anthropause effects on environmental indicators, people's experiences of the Anthropause or its potential to inspire change were hardly considered. Hence, we aimed to measure people's appreciation of the environmental outcomes of the Anthropause, ecophilosophical contemplations about the pandemic, and experiences of lockdown-triggered biophilia (human's innate love for and draw towards nature) and test the hypothesis that these experiences would be consistently more prominent among the already environmentally inclined. To that end, we developed and tested three measures on a representative sample of 993 New Zealanders. Anthropause Appreciation received the highest overall mean ratings, followed by Lockdown-Biophilia and Eco-Contemplation. Pre-existing pro-environmental dispositions and behaviours did not consistently influence our three measures as expected. Demographic variables had little influence, while experiences of financial and mental health impacts due to COVID-19 had no influence. We interpreted the limited influence of explanatory variables as indicative of a degree of uniformity in people's experiences. High appreciation of Anthropause benefits suggests that the public may be supportive of policies and ways of living that can lead to similar outcomes post-pandemic - offering environmental policymakers and communicators a basis for action. Ecophilosophical contemplations and biophilic draw among the public suggest an awareness of the significance of the human-nature relationship - offering a symbolic global keystone for communicating and advocating conservation and the many values of pauses in life to connect with nature. Building women's environmental leadership capabilities and the ongoing greening of Christianity may be essential steps for global post-pandemic environmental behaviour transformations.
