Early selection of task-relevant features through population gating.

ABSTRACT: Brains can gracefully weed out irrelevant stimuli to guide behavior. This feat is believed to rely on a progressive selection of task-relevant stimuli across the cortical hierarchy, but the specific across-area interactions enabling stimulus selection are still unclear. Here, we propose that population gating, occurring within primary auditory cortex (A1) but controlled by top-down inputs from prelimbic region of medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), can support across-area stimulus selection. Examining single-unit activity recorded while rats performed an auditory context-dependent task, we found that A1 encoded relevant and irrelevant stimuli along a common dimension of its neural space. Yet, the relevant stimulus encoding was enhanced along an extra dimension. In turn, mPFC encoded only the stimulus relevant to the ongoing context. To identify candidate mechanisms for stimulus selection within A1, we reverse-engineered low-rank RNNs trained on a similar task. Our analyses predicted that two context-modulated neural populations gated their preferred stimulus in opposite contexts, which we confirmed in further analyses of A1. Finally, we show in a two-region RNN how population gating within A1 could be controlled by top-down inputs from PFC, enabling flexible across-area communication despite fixed inter-areal connectivity.

Project description:BackgroundSupport vector machines (SVM) are a powerful tool to analyze data with a number of predictors approximately equal or larger than the number of observations. However, originally, application of SVM to analyze biomedical data was limited because SVM was not designed to evaluate importance of predictor variables. Creating predictor models based on only the most relevant variables is essential in biomedical research. Currently, substantial work has been done to allow assessment of variable importance in SVM models but this work has focused on SVM implemented with linear kernels. The power of SVM as a prediction model is associated with the flexibility generated by use of non-linear kernels. Moreover, SVM has been extended to model survival outcomes. This paper extends the Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) algorithm by proposing three approaches to rank variables based on non-linear SVM and SVM for survival analysis.ResultsThe proposed algorithms allows visualization of each one the RFE iterations, and hence, identification of the most relevant predictors of the response variable. Using simulation studies based on time-to-event outcomes and three real datasets, we evaluate the three methods, based on pseudo-samples and kernel principal component analysis, and compare them with the original SVM-RFE algorithm for non-linear kernels. The three algorithms we proposed performed generally better than the gold standard RFE for non-linear kernels, when comparing the truly most relevant variables with the variable ranks produced by each algorithm in simulation studies. Generally, the RFE-pseudo-samples outperformed the other three methods, even when variables were assumed to be correlated in all tested scenarios.ConclusionsThe proposed approaches can be implemented with accuracy to select variables and assess direction and strength of associations in analysis of biomedical data using SVM for categorical or time-to-event responses. Conducting variable selection and interpreting direction and strength of associations between predictors and outcomes with the proposed approaches, particularly with the RFE-pseudo-samples approach can be implemented with accuracy when analyzing biomedical data. These approaches, perform better than the classical RFE of Guyon for realistic scenarios about the structure of biomedical data.

Project description:Access to WM can be restricted on the basis of goal-relevant properties such as spatial location. However, the extent of voluntary control over which features of an attended multi-feature object are encoded and maintained in WM is debated. Some evidence suggests that attending to an object leads to obligatory storage of all of its features, whereas other evidence suggests that access to WM can be restricted to only goal-relevant features. Another possibility is that all features are initially encoded, but irrelevant features are removed from WM over time. To address these various possibilities, we used pattern classification of EEG signals to track the temporal evolution of representations reflecting the encoding and storage of task-relevant and irrelevant features in WM. In different blocks, participants remembered the orientation, color or both orientation and color of a colored, oriented grating. The color and orientation of the grating was randomly drawn from two distinct feature bins on each trial. To examine trial-specific activity reflecting storage of the object's features, a support vector machine (SVM) classifier was trained to classify what bin the stimulus features came from. Importantly, for orientation, the classifier produced reliably above-chance classification across the delay when orientation was task-relevant but not when it was task-irrelevant. Interestingly, orientation could be accurately classified on trials for which both orientation and color were remembered. Moreover, a separate measure corresponding to the probability of a feature belonging to the correct bin was significantly higher when orientation was task-relevant compared to task-irrelevant during encoding. Above-chance classification for color was only present during the initial 500 msec across all conditions. Our results suggest that although information about all of an object's features is present in the initial stimulus-evoked neural response, information about the task-irrelevant features is attenuated during stimulus encoding and is largely absent throughout the delay.
