Selective Schiff Base Formation of Group 9 Organometallic Complexes with Functionalized Spirobifluorene Ligands.

ABSTRACT: Organic amines are important compounds present in a wide variety of products, which makes the development of new systems for their detection an interesting field of study. New organometallic complexes of group 9 [MCp*X(2'-R-2-py-SBF)] (M = Ir, Rh; R = H, X = Cl (6), R = H, X = OAc (7), R = CHO, X = Cl (8)), and [IrCp*Cl(2', 7-diCHO-2-py-SBF)] (9) (Cp* pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, SBF = 9,9'-spirobifluorene) bearing bidentate C-N ligands based on 9,9'-spirobifluorene were obtained and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis when possible. The formation of a Schiff base to give complexes with the formula [MCp*Cl(2'-CH=NR-2-py-SBF)] (M = Ir, Rh; R = alkyl or aryl (10-12)), through condensation of an amine, and the aldehyde group present in these new complexes was studied leading to a selective reactivity depending on the nature of the amine and the metal center. While the iridium complexes only react with aromatic amines, the rhodium derivative requires heat for those but can react at room temperature with aliphatic amines.

Project description:The reactivity of the shortened salen-type ligands H3salmp, H2salmen and H2sal(p-X)ben with variable para-substituent on the central aromatic ring (X = tBu, Me, H, F, Cl, CF3, NO2) towards the trivalent metal ions manganese(III) and iron(III) is presented. The selective formation of the dinuclear complexes [M2(μ-salmp)2], M = Mn (1a), Fe (2a), [M2(μ-salmen)2(μ-OR)2)], R = Et, Me, H and M = Mn (3a-c) or Fe (4a-c), and (M2(μ-sal[p-X]ben)2(μ-OMe)2), X = tBu, Me, H, F, Cl, CF3, NO2 and M = Mn (5a-g) or Fe (6a-g), could be identified by reaction of the Schiff bases with metal salts and the base NEt3, and their characterization through elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction of 2a·2AcOEt, 2a·2CH3CN and 3c·2DMF was performed. In the case of iron(III) and H3salmp, when using NaOH as a base instead of NEt3, the dinuclear complexes [Fe2(μ-salmp)(μ-OR)(salim)2], R = Me, H (2b,c) could be isolated and spectroscopically characterized, including the crystal structure of 2b·1.5H2O, which showed that rupture of one salmp3- to two coordinated salim- ligands and release of one salH molecule occurred. The same hydrolytic tendency could be identified with sal(p-X)ben ligands in the case of iron(III) also by using NEt3 or upon standing in solution, while manganese(III) did not promote such a C-N bond breakage. Cyclic voltammetry studies were performed for 3b, 4b, 5a and 6a, revealing that the iron(III) complexes can be irreversibly reduced to the mixed-valence FeIIFeIII and FeII2 dinuclear species, while the manganese(III) derivatives can be reversibly oxidized to either the mixed-valence MnIIIMnIV or to the MnIV2 dinuclear species. The super-exchange interaction between the metal centers, mediated by the bridging ligands, resulted in being antiferromagnetic (AFM) for the selected dinuclear compounds 3b, 4b, 5a, 5e,5f, 6a and 6e. The coupling constants J (-2JŜ1·Ŝ2 formalism) had values around -13 cm-1 for manganese(III) compounds, among the largest AFM coupling constants reported so far for dinuclear MnIII2 derivatives, while values between -3 and -10 cm-1 were obtained for iron(III) compounds.

Project description:A new family of dicopper(I) complexes [CuI2RL](X)2 (R=H, 1X, R=tBu, 2X and R=NO2, 3X, X=CF3SO3, ClO4, SbF6, or BArF, BArF=[B{3,5-(CF3)2C6H3}4]-), where RL is a Schiff-base ligand containing two tridentate binding sites linked by a xylyl spacer, has been prepared and characterized, and its reaction with O2 has been studied. The complexes were designed with the aim of reproducing structural aspects of the active site of type 3 dicopper proteins; they contain two three-coordinate copper sites and a rather flexible podand ligand backbone. The solid-state structures of 1ClO4, 2CF3SO3, 2ClO4, and 3BArF.CH3CN have been established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. 1ClO4 adopts a polymeric structure in the solid state while 2CF3SO3, 2ClO4, and 3BArF.CH3CN are monomeric. The complexes have been studied in solution by means of 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy, which put forward the presence of dynamic processes. 1-3BArF and 1-3CF3SO3 in acetone react rapidly with O2 to generate metaestable [CuIII2(mu-O)2(RL)]2+ 1-3(O2) and [CuIII2(mu-O)2(CF3SO3)(RL)]+ 1-3(O2)(CF3SO3) species, respectively, that have been characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and resonance Raman analysis. Instead, reaction of 1-3BArF with O2 in CH2Cl2 results in intermolecular O2 binding. DFT methods have been used to study the chemical identities and structural parameters of the O2 adducts, and the relative stability of the CuIII2(mu-O)2 form with respect to the CuII2(mu-eta2:eta2-O2) isomer. The reaction of 1X, X = CF3SO3 and BArF, with O2 in acetone has been studied by stopped-flow UV-vis exhibiting an unexpected very fast reaction rate (k=3.82(4)x10(3) M-1 s-1, DeltaH=4.9+/-0.5 kJ.mol-1, DeltaS=-148+/-5 J.K-1.mol-1), nearly 3 orders of magnitude faster than in the parent [CuI2(m-XYLMeAN)]2+. Thermal decomposition of 1-3(O2) does not result in aromatic hydroxylation. The mechanism and kinetics of O2 binding to 1X (X=CF3SO3 and BArF) are discussed and compared with those associated with selected examples of reported models of O2-processing copper proteins. A synergistic role of the copper ions in O2 binding and activation is clearly established from this analysis.

Project description:This work describes the synthesis and characterization of three molybdenum dinitrosyl Schiff base complexes of the general formula [Mo(NO)2(L)(OH)], where L is N-(dehydroacetic acid)-4-aminoantipyrene (dha-aapH), N-(4-acetylidene-3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-5-one)-4-aminoantipyrine (amphp-aapH) or N-(3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-propionylidene-2-pyrazolin-5-one)-4-aminoantipyrine (mphpp-aapH). The complexes were formulated on the basis of spectroscopic analyses, elemental composition, magnetic susceptibility measurements, molar conductance behaviour and determination of the respective decomposition temperatures. A comparative experimental-theoretical approach was followed to elucidate the structure of the complexes. Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermo-gravimetry (TG) and electronic spectral insights were mainly focused on the confirmation of the formation of the complexes. The computational density functional theory (DFT) calculations evaluated in the study involve the molecular specification for the use of LANL2DZ/RB3LYP formalism for metal atoms and 6-311G/RB3LYP for the remaining non-metal atoms. The study reveals a suitable cis-octahedral geometry for the complexes. The TG curve of one of the representative complexes was evaluated to find the respective thermodynamic and kinetic parameters using various physical methods. The Freeman & Carroll (FC) differential method, the Horowitz and Metzger (HM) approximation method, the Coats-Redfern method and the Broido method were employed to present a comparative thermal analysis of the complex. The Broido method proved the best fit to the results for the compound under question. In addition to structural and thermal analyses, the study also deals with the in vitro antimicrobial and anticancer sensitivity of the complexes. The results revealed potent biological properties of the representative complex containing dha-aapH. Cell toxicity tests against COLO-205 human cancer cell line using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay showed an IC50 value of 53.13 μgm mL-1 for the Schiff base and 10.51 μgm L-1 for the respective complex. Similarly the same complex proved to be an effective antimicrobial agent against Aspergillus, Pseudomonas, E. coli and Streptococcus. The results indicated a more pronounced activity against Pseudomonas and Streptococcus than the other two microbial species.
