Quantum noise and its evasion in feedback oscillators.

ABSTRACT: Feedback oscillators, consisting of an amplifier whose output is partially fed back to its input, provide stable references for standardization and synchronization. Notably, the laser is such an oscillator whose performance can be limited by quantum fluctuations. The resulting frequency instability, quantified by the Schawlow-Townes formula, sets a limit to laser linewidth. Here, we show that the Schawlow-Townes formula applies universally to feedback oscillators beyond lasers. This is because it arises from quantum noise added by the amplifier and out-coupler in the feedback loop. Tracing the precise origin of quantum noise in an oscillator informs techniques to systematically evade it: we show how squeezing and entanglement can enable sub-Schawlow-Townes linewidth feedback oscillators. Our analysis clarifies the quantum limits to the stability of feedback oscillators in general, derives a standard quantum limit (SQL) for all such devices, and quantifies the efficacy of quantum strategies in realizing sub-SQL oscillators.

Continuous variable quantum optical simulation for time evolution of quantum harmonic oscillators.

Project description:Quantum simulation enables one to mimic the evolution of other quantum systems using a controllable quantum system. Quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO) is one of the most important model systems in quantum physics. To observe the transient dynamics of a QHO with high oscillation frequency directly is difficult. We experimentally simulate the transient behaviors of QHO in an open system during time evolution with an optical mode and a logical operation system of continuous variable quantum computation. The time evolution of an atomic ensemble in the collective spontaneous emission is analytically simulated by mapping the atomic ensemble onto a QHO. The measured fidelity, which is used for quantifying the quality of the simulation, is higher than its classical limit. The presented simulation scheme provides a new tool for studying the dynamic behaviors of QHO.

Qubit-mediated deterministic nonlinear gates for quantum oscillators.

Project description:Quantum nonlinear operations for harmonic oscillator systems play a key role in the development of analog quantum simulators and computers. Since strong highly nonlinear operations are often unavailable in the existing physical systems, it is a common practice to approximate them by using conditional measurement-induced methods. The conditional approach has several drawbacks, the most severe of which is the exponentially decreasing success rate of the strong and complex nonlinear operations. We show that by using a suitable two level system sequentially interacting with the oscillator, it is possible to resolve these issues and implement a nonlinear operation both nearly deterministically and nearly perfectly. We explicitly demonstrate the approach by constructing self-Kerr and cross-Kerr couplings in a realistic situation, which require a feasible dispersive coupling between the two-level system and the oscillator.

Coupling protocol of interlocked feedback oscillators in circadian clocks.

Project description:Circadian rhythms (approx. 24 h) show the robustness of key oscillatory features such as phase, period and amplitude against external and internal variations. The robustness of Drosophila circadian clocks can be generated by interlocked transcriptional-translational feedback loops, where two negative feedback loops are coupled through mutual activations. The mechanisms by which such coupling protocols have survived out of many possible protocols remain to be revealed. To address this question, we investigated two distinct coupling protocols: activator-coupled oscillators (ACO) and repressor-coupled oscillators (RCO). We focused on the two coupling parameters: coupling dissociation constant and coupling time-delay. Interestingly, the ACO was able to produce anti-phase or morning-evening cycles, whereas the RCO produced in-phase ones. Deterministic and stochastic analyses demonstrated that the anti-phase ACO provided greater fluctuations in amplitude not only with respect to changes in coupling parameters but also to random parameter perturbations than the in-phase RCO. Moreover, the ACO deteriorated the entrainability to the day-night master clock, whereas the RCO produced high entrainability. Considering that the real, interlocked feedback loops have evolved as the ACO, instead of the RCO, we first proposed a hypothesis that the morning-evening or anti-phase cycle is more essential for Drosophila than achieving robustness and entrainability.

Fluidic Oscillators, Feedback Channel Effect under Compressible Flow Conditions.

Project description:Fluidic oscillators are often used to modify the forces fluid generates on any given bluff body; they can also be used as flow, pressure or acoustic sensors, with each application requiring a particular oscillator configuration. Regarding the fluidic oscillators' main performance, a problem which is not yet clarified is the understanding of the feedback channel effect on the oscillator outlet mass flow frequency and amplitude, especially under compressible flow conditions. In order to bring light to this point, a set of three-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulations under compressible flow conditions are introduced in the present paper; four different feedback channel lengths and two inlet Reynolds numbers Re = 12,410 and Re = 18,617 are considered. From the results obtained, it is observed that as the inlet velocity increases, the fluidic oscillator outlet mass flow frequency and amplitude increase. An increase of the feedback channel length decreases the outlet mass flow oscillating frequency. At large feedback channel lengths, the former main oscillation tends to disappear, the jet inside the mixing chamber simply fluctuates at high frequencies. Once the Feedback Channel (FC) length exceeds a certain threshold, the oscillation stops. Under all conditions studied, pressure waves are observed to be traveling along the feedback channels, their origin and interaction with the jet entering the mixing chamber are thoroughly evaluated. The paper proves that jet oscillations are pressure-driven.

Quantum annealing with all-to-all connected nonlinear oscillators.

Project description:Quantum annealing aims at solving combinatorial optimization problems mapped to Ising interactions between quantum spins. Here, with the objective of developing a noise-resilient annealer, we propose a paradigm for quantum annealing with a scalable network of two-photon-driven Kerr-nonlinear resonators. Each resonator encodes an Ising spin in a robust degenerate subspace formed by two coherent states of opposite phases. A fully connected optimization problem is mapped to local fields driving the resonators, which are connected with only local four-body interactions. We describe an adiabatic annealing protocol in this system and analyse its performance in the presence of photon loss. Numerical simulations indicate substantial resilience to this noise channel, leading to a high success probability for quantum annealing. Finally, we propose a realistic circuit QED implementation of this promising platform for implementing a large-scale quantum Ising machine.

Impact of nonlinear delayed feedback on synchronized oscillators.

Project description:We show that synchronization processes can effectively be controlled with nonlinear delayed feedback. We demonstrate that nonlinear delayed feedback can have a twofold impact on the collective dynamics of large ensembles of coupled oscillators: synchronizing and, mostly, desynchronizing effects. By means of a model equation for the mean field, we explore the existence and stability of the feedback-induced desynchronized states, their multistability and dynamical properties. We propose nonlinear delayed feedback stimulation for the therapy of neurological diseases characterized by abnormal synchrony.

Low-noise GaAs quantum dots for quantum photonics.

Project description:Quantum dots are both excellent single-photon sources and hosts for single spins. This combination enables the deterministic generation of Raman-photons-bandwidth-matched to an atomic quantum-memory-and the generation of photon cluster states, a resource in quantum communication and measurement-based quantum computing. GaAs quantum dots in AlGaAs can be matched in frequency to a rubidium-based photon memory, and have potentially improved electron spin coherence compared to the widely used InGaAs quantum dots. However, their charge stability and optical linewidths are typically much worse than for their InGaAs counterparts. Here, we embed GaAs quantum dots into an n-i-p-diode specially designed for low-temperature operation. We demonstrate ultra-low noise behaviour: charge control via Coulomb blockade, close-to lifetime-limited linewidths, and no blinking. We observe high-fidelity optical electron-spin initialisation and long electron-spin lifetimes for these quantum dots. Our work establishes a materials platform for low-noise quantum photonics close to the red part of the spectrum.

Unforgeable noise-tolerant quantum tokens

Project description:The realization of devices that harness the laws of quantum mechanics represents an exciting challenge at the interface of modern technology and fundamental science. An exemplary paragon of the power of such quantum primitives is the concept of “quantum money” [Wiesner S (1983) ACM SIGACT News 15:78–88]. A dishonest holder of a quantum bank note will invariably fail in any counterfeiting attempts; indeed, under assumptions of ideal measurements and decoherence-free memories such security is guaranteed by the no-cloning theorem. In any practical situation, however, noise, decoherence, and operational imperfections abound. Thus, the development of secure “quantum money”-type primitives capable of tolerating realistic infidelities is of both practical and fundamental importance. Here, we propose a novel class of such protocols and demonstrate their tolerance to noise; moreover, we prove their rigorous security by determining tight fidelity thresholds. Our proposed protocols require only the ability to prepare, store, and measure single quantum bit memories, making their experimental realization accessible with current technologies.

Noise-assisted variational quantum thermalization.

Project description:Preparing thermal states on a quantum computer can have a variety of applications, from simulating many-body quantum systems to training machine learning models. Variational circuits have been proposed for this task on near-term quantum computers, but several challenges remain, such as finding a scalable cost-function, avoiding the need of purification, and mitigating noise effects. We propose a new algorithm for thermal state preparation that tackles those three challenges by exploiting the noise of quantum circuits. We consider a variational architecture containing a depolarizing channel after each unitary layer, with the ability to directly control the level of noise. We derive a closed-form approximation for the free-energy of such circuit and use it as a cost function for our variational algorithm. By evaluating our method on a variety of Hamiltonians and system sizes, we find several systems for which the thermal state can be approximated with a high fidelity. However, we also show that the ability for our algorithm to learn the thermal state strongly depends on the temperature: while a high fidelity can be obtained for high and low temperatures, we identify a specific range for which the problem becomes more challenging. We hope that this first study on noise-assisted thermal state preparation will inspire future research on exploiting noise in variational algorithms.

Multi-level quantum noise spectroscopy.

Project description:System noise identification is crucial to the engineering of robust quantum systems. Although existing quantum noise spectroscopy (QNS) protocols measure an aggregate amount of noise affecting a quantum system, they generally cannot distinguish between the underlying processes that contribute to it. Here, we propose and experimentally validate a spin-locking-based QNS protocol that exploits the multi-level energy structure of a superconducting qubit to achieve two notable advances. First, our protocol extends the spectral range of weakly anharmonic qubit spectrometers beyond the present limitations set by their lack of strong anharmonicity. Second, the additional information gained from probing the higher-excited levels enables us to identify and distinguish contributions from different underlying noise mechanisms.
