Rapid assembly of structurally diverse cyanamides and disulfanes via base-mediated aminoalkylation of aryl thiourea.

ABSTRACT: A general method for the preparation of cyanamides and disulfanes from aryl thiourea and halide through a base-mediated strategy is described. Mercaptan and N-aryl cyanamide are the key intermediates in the reaction. The current method is convenient, eco-friendly, and has high yields for the synthesis of substituted cyanamide and functional disulfanes in a one-pot procedure from readily available starting materials.

Project description:Catalytic asymmetric dearomatization (CADA) reactions is an important synthetic method for constructing enantioenriched complex cyclic systems from simple aromatic feedstocks. However, the CADA reactions of nonactivated arenes, such as naphthalenes and benzenes, have been far less explored than those of electronically activated arenes, such as phenols, naphthols and indoles. Herein, we disclose an asymmetric dearomative cyclopropanation of naphthalenes for the rapid construction of polycyclic compounds. With chiral dirhodium carboxylate as a catalyst, the dearomative cyclopropanation proceeded smoothly under mild conditions and afforded benzonorcaradiene-containing tetracycles in good yield and high enantioselectivity (up to 99% ee). Three stereogenic centers, including two all-carbon quaternary centers, were created in the dearomatization reaction. Moreover, a variety of functional groups are well-tolerated in the reaction. The products could be readily converted into other complex polycycles while maintaining the high ee value. An enantioselective dearomative cyclopropanation of naphthalenes has been developed, which constructed a range of tetracyclic compounds bearing multichiral centers in high enantioselectivity.

Project description:Highly strained cage hydrocarbons have long stood as fundamental molecules to explore the limits of chemical stability and reactivity, probe physical properties, and more recently as bioactive molecules and in materials discovery. Interestingly, the nitrogenous congeners have attracted much less attention. Previously absent from the literature, azahomocubanes, offer an opportunity to investigate the effects of a nitrogen atom when incorporated into a highly constrained polycyclic environment. Herein disclosed is the synthesis of 1-azahomocubane, accompanied by comprehensive structural characterization, physical property analysis and chemical reactivity. These data support the conclusion that nitrogen is remarkably well tolerated in a highly strained environment. 1-Azahomocubane has been prepared 56 years after the parent hydrocarbon. Introduction of a nitrogen atom into this constrained polycyclic environment resulted in minimal changes to the framework geometry, with s-character of the nitrogen lone pair increasing due to strain.

Project description:A convenient and efficient annulation reaction has been developed for the general synthesis of dinitrile-substituted cyclopropanes in moderate to excellent yields. A variety of 2-arylacetonitriles and α-bromoennitriles were compatible under the standard conditions. The reaction was achieved through tandem Michael-type addition followed by intramolecular cyclization. The preliminary application of this method was confirmed by the synthesis of the 2,4-dioxo-3-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexane scaffold. An efficient base-promoted synthesis of nitrile-substituted cyclopropanes from 2-arylacetonitriles and α-bromoennitriles under mild conditions via Michael-initiated ring closure.

Project description:Electron injection is demonstrated to trigger electrocatalytic chain reactions capable of releasing a solvent molecule and forming a redox active guest molecule. One-electron reduction of a hydroxy anthrone derivative (AQH–CH2CN) results in the formation of an anthraquinone radical anion (AQ˙−) and acetonitrile (CH3CN). The resulting fragment of AQ˙− exhibits high stability under mild reducing conditions, and it has enough reducing power to reduce the reactant of AQH–CH2CN. Hence, subsequent electron transfer from AQ˙− to AQH–CH2CN yields the secondary AQ˙− and CH3CN, while the initial AQ˙− is subsequently oxidized to AQ. Overall, the reactants of AQH–CH2CN are completely converted into AQ and CH3CN in sustainable electrocatalytic chain reactions. These electrocatalytic chain reactions are mild and sustainable, successfully achieving catalytic electron-triggered charge-transfer (CT) complex formation. Reactant AQH–CH2CN is non-planar, making it unsuitable for CT interaction with an electron donor host compound (UHAnt2) bearing parallel anthracene tweezers. However, conversion of AQH–CH2CN to planar electron acceptor AQ by the electrocatalytic chain reactions turns on CT interaction, generating a host CT complex with UHAnt2 (AQ ⊂ UHAnt2). Therefore, sustainable electrocatalytic chain reactions can control CT interactions using only a catalytic amount of electrons, ultimately affording a one-electron switch associated with catalytic electron-triggered turn-on molecular recognition. The reactants of AQH–CH2CN are converted into AQ and CH3CN in sustainable electrocatalytic chain reactions, successfully achieving catalytic electron-triggered charge-transfer (CT) complex formation.

Project description:An organocatalytic enantioselective radical reaction of potassium alkyltrifluoroborates, DABCO·(SO2)2 and α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds under photoinduced conditions is developed, which provides an efficient pathway for the synthesis of chiral β-sulfonyl carbonyl compounds in good yields with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 96% ee). Aside from α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with auxiliary groups, common chalcone substrates are also well compatible with this organocatalytic system. This method proceeds through an organocatalytic enantioselective radical sulfonylation under photoinduced conditions, and represents a rare example of asymmetric transformation involving sulfur dioxide insertion. A photoinduced organocatalytic enantioselective radical reaction is developed, affording chiral β-sulfonyl carbonyl compounds in good yields with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 96% ee).

Project description:The formation of novel cationic mixed main group compounds is reported revealing a chain composed of different elements of group 13, 14, and 15. Reactions of different pnictogenylboranes R2EBH2·NMe3 (E = P, R = Ph, H; E = As, R = Ph, H) with the NHC-stabilized compound IDipp·GeH2BH2OTf (1) (IDipp = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazole-2-ylidene) were carried out, yielding the novel cationic, mixed group 13/14/15 compounds [IDipp·GeH2BH2ER2BH2·NMe3]+ (2a E = P; R = Ph; 2b E = As; R = Ph; 3a E = P; R = H; 3b E = As; R = H) by the nucleophilic substitution of the triflate (OTf) group. The products were analysed by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry and for 2a and 2b also by X-ray structure analysis. Further reactions of 1 with H2EBH2·IDipp (E = P, As) resulted in the unprecedented parent complexes [IDipp·GeH2BH2EH2BH2·IDipp][OTf] (5a E = P; 5b E = As), which were studied by X-ray structure analysis, NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Accompanying DFT computations give insight into the stability of the formed products with respect to their decomposition. Reactivity studies on the complex IDipp·GeH2BH2OTf with different pnictogenylboranes were carried out. Hereby, unprecedented cationic group 13/14/15 compounds containing chains of only hydrogen-substituted 13/14/15 elements could be obtained.

Project description:Gold(i) triarylphosphane compounds are a well-known class of coordination compounds displaying from mild to strong emissive properties. Mechanochemical approaches to the preparation, spectroscopic characterization, X-ray diffraction structural determination, and photophysical studies of green emissive neutral linear monophosphane or neutral pseudo-T-shaped or cationic bis-phosphane gold(i) compounds, are herein discussed. The mechanochemical approach to the preparation of gold(i) derivatives was particularly successful for ligands bearing the carboxylic group, while the preparation with esterified ligands yields better results with solvent-mediated methods. The introduction of carboxyl or ester substituents in one aryl group favors the ligand-centered emissions. The analysis of the origin of the emissions was elucidated on the basis of DFT calculations, addressing the emissive behavior to ligand-centered excited states, strongly affected by supramolecular reversible hydrogen bonding aggregation. The study indicates that the ligand with the carboxylic group is particularly suitable for the mechanochemical preparation of emissive gold(i) complexes for material science applications. LAG mechanochemical methods are applied for the preparation of luminescent di- and tri-coordinated gold(i) derivatives. Among them, a distorted T shaped bis-phosphane gold(i) chloride compound strongly emits upon self-aggregation by hydrogen bonding.

Project description:Pd-catalyzed C–H functionalization reactions of non-directed substrates have recently emerged as an attractive alternative to the use of directing groups. Key to the success of these transformations has been the discovery of new ligands capable of increasing both the reactivity of the inert C–H bond and the selectivity of the process. Among them, a new type of S,O-ligand has been shown to be highly efficient in promoting a variety of Pd-catalyzed C–H olefination reactions of non-directed arenes. Despite the success of this type of S,O-ligand, its role in the C–H functionalization processes is unknown. Herein, we describe a detailed mechanistic study focused on elucidating the role of the S,O-ligand in the Pd-catalyzed C–H olefination of non-directed arenes. For this purpose, several mechanistic tools, including isolation and characterization of reactive intermediates, NMR and kinetic studies, isotope effects and DFT calculations have been employed. The data from these experiments suggest that the C–H activation is the rate-determining step in both cases with and without the S,O-ligand. Furthermore, the results indicate that the S,O-ligand triggers the formation of more reactive Pd cationic species, which explains the observed acceleration of the reaction. Together, these studies shed light on the role of the S,O-ligand in promoting Pd-catalyzed C–H functionalization reactions. A mechanistic study of the role of the S,O-ligand in promoting palladium catalyzed C–H activation of arenes is described. The data indicate that the S,O-ligand triggers the formation of more reactive palladium cationic species.

Project description:Organic single-component ferroelectrics, as an important class of metal-free ferroelectrics, are highly desirable because of their easy processing, mechanical flexibility, and biocompatibility. However, although nearly 50 years have passed since the discovery of photochromism in azobenzene-doped cholesteric liquid crystals, ferroelectricity has never been found in azobenzene-based crystals. Here, we use an amino group to substitute a fluorine atom of 2,2′,4,4′,6,6′-hexafluoroazobenzene, which successfully introduces ferroelectricity into 2-amino-2′,4,4′,6,6′-pentafluoroazobenzene (APFA). APFA shows an extremely high Curie temperature (Tc) of 443 K, which is outstanding among single-component ferroelectrics. It also exhibits an indirect optical band gap of 2.27 eV as well as photoisomerization behavior between the trans-form and the cis-form triggered by pedal motion. To our knowledge, APFA is the first azobenzene-based ferroelectric crystal. This work opens an avenue to design excellent single-component ferroelectrics and will inspire the exploration of azobenzene-based ferroelectrics for promising applications in biofriendly ferroelectric devices. The first azobenzene-based organic single-component ferroelectric 2-amino-2′,4,4′,6,6′-pentafluoroazobenzene was designed, which shows an exceptionally high Curie temperature (Tc) of 443 K.
