Project description:PurposeIn surgical image segmentation, a major challenge is the extensive time and resources required to gather large-scale annotated datasets. Given the scarcity of annotated data in this field, our work aims to develop a model that achieves competitive performance with training on limited datasets, while also enhancing model robustness in various surgical scenarios.MethodsWe propose a method that harnesses the strengths of pre-trained Vision Transformers (ViTs) and data efficiency of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Specifically, we demonstrate how a CNN segmentation model can be used as a lightweight adapter for a frozen ViT feature encoder. Our novel feature adapter uses cross-attention modules that merge the multiscale features derived from the CNN encoder with feature embeddings from ViT, ensuring integration of the global insights from ViT along with local information from CNN.ResultsExtensive experiments demonstrate our method outperforms current models in surgical instrument segmentation. Specifically, it achieves superior performance in binary segmentation on the Robust-MIS 2019 dataset, as well as in multiclass segmentation tasks on the EndoVis 2017 and EndoVis 2018 datasets. It also showcases remarkable robustness through cross-dataset validation across these 3 datasets, along with the CholecSeg8k and AutoLaparo datasets. Ablation studies based on the datasets prove the efficacy of our novel adapter module.ConclusionIn this study, we presented a novel approach integrating ViT and CNN. Our unique feature adapter successfully combines the global insights of ViT with the local, multi-scale spatial capabilities of CNN. Project description:Over the past decade, extended reality (XR) has emerged as an assistive technology not only to augment residual vision of people losing their sight but also to study the rudimentary vision restored to blind people by a visual neuroprosthesis. A defining quality of these XR technologies is their ability to update the stimulus based on the user's eye, head, or body movements. To make the best use of these emerging technologies, it is valuable and timely to understand the state of this research and identify any shortcomings that are present. Here we present a systematic literature review of 227 publications from 106 different venues assessing the potential of XR technology to further visual accessibility. In contrast to other reviews, we sample studies from multiple scientific disciplines, focus on technology that augments a person's residual vision, and require studies to feature a quantitative evaluation with appropriate end users. We summarize prominent findings from different XR research areas, show how the landscape has changed over the past decade, and identify scientific gaps in the literature. Specifically, we highlight the need for real-world validation, the broadening of end-user participation, and a more nuanced understanding of the usability of different XR-based accessibility aids.

Project description:Mankind directly controls the environment and lifestyles of several domestic species for purposes ranging from production and research to conservation and companionship. These environments and lifestyles may not offer these animals the best quality of life. Behaviour is a direct reflection of how the animal is coping with its environment. Behavioural indicators are thus among the preferred parameters to assess welfare. However, behavioural recording (usually from video) can be very time consuming and the accuracy and reliability of the output rely on the experience and background of the observers. The outburst of new video technology and computer image processing gives the basis for promising solutions. In this pilot study, we present a new prototype software able to automatically infer the behaviour of dogs housed in kennels from 3D visual data and through structured machine learning frameworks. Depth information acquired through 3D features, body part detection and training are the key elements that allow the machine to recognise postures, trajectories inside the kennel and patterns of movement that can be later labelled at convenience. The main innovation of the software is its ability to automatically cluster frequently observed temporal patterns of movement without any pre-set ethogram. Conversely, when common patterns are defined through training, a deviation from normal behaviour in time or between individuals could be assessed. The software accuracy in correctly detecting the dogs' behaviour was checked through a validation process. An automatic behaviour recognition system, independent from human subjectivity, could add scientific knowledge on animals' quality of life in confinement as well as saving time and resources. This 3D framework was designed to be invariant to the dog's shape and size and could be extended to farm, laboratory and zoo quadrupeds in artificial housing. The computer vision technique applied to this software is innovative in non-human animal behaviour science. Further improvements and validation are needed, and future applications and limitations are discussed.

Project description:Microscope-integrated intraoperative OCT (iOCT) enables imaging of tissue cross-sections concurrent with ophthalmic surgical maneuvers. However, limited acquisition rates and complex three-dimensional visualization methods preclude real-time surgical guidance using iOCT. We present an automated stereo vision surgical instrument tracking system integrated with a prototype iOCT system. We demonstrate, for the first time, automatically tracked video-rate cross-sectional iOCT imaging of instrument-tissue interactions during ophthalmic surgical maneuvers. The iOCT scan-field is automatically centered on the surgical instrument tip, ensuring continuous visualization of instrument positions relative to the underlying tissue over a 2500 mm(2) field with sub-millimeter positional resolution and <1° angular resolution. Automated instrument tracking has the added advantage of providing feedback on surgical dynamics during precision tissue manipulations because it makes it possible to use only two cross-sectional iOCT images, aligned parallel and perpendicular to the surgical instrument, which also reduces both system complexity and data throughput requirements. Our current implementation is suitable for anterior segment surgery. Further system modifications are proposed for applications in posterior segment surgery. Finally, the instrument tracking system described is modular and system agnostic, making it compatible with different commercial and research OCT and surgical microscopy systems and surgical instrumentations. These advances address critical barriers to the development of iOCT-guided surgical maneuvers and may also be translatable to applications in microsurgery outside of ophthalmology.

Project description:BackgroundExtended reality (XR) technologies which include virtual, augmented, and mixed reality have significant potential in surgical training, because they can help to eliminate the limitations of traditional methods. This umbrella review aimed to investigate factors that influence the acceptance and use of XR in surgical training using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model.MethodsAn umbrella review was conducted in 2024 by searching various databases until the end of 2023. Studies were selected based on the predefined eligibility criteria and analyzed using the components of the UTAUT model. The quality and risk of bias of the selected studies were assessed, and the findings were reported descriptively.ResultsA total of 44 articles were included in this study. In most studies, XR technologies were used for surgical training of orthopedics, neurology, and laparoscopy. Based on the UTAUT model, the findings indicated that XR technologies improved surgical skills and procedural accuracy while simultaneously reducing risks and operating room time (performance expectancy). In terms of effort expectancy, user-friendly systems were accessible for the trainees with various levels of expertise. From a social influence standpoint, XR technologies enhanced learning by providing positive feedback from experienced surgeons during surgical training. In addition, facilitating conditions emphasized the importance of resource availability and addressing technical and financial limitations to maximize the effectiveness of XR technologies in surgical training.ConclusionsXR technologies significantly improve surgical training by increasing skills and procedural accuracy. Although adoption is facilitated by designing user-friendly interfaces and positive social influences, financial and resource challenges must be overcome, too. The successful integration of XR into surgical training necessitates careful curriculum design and resource allocation. Future research should focus on overcoming these barriers, so that XR can fully realize its potential in surgical training.

Project description:ObjectivesThe prospect of extended reality (XR) being integrated with surgical training curriculum has attracted scholars. However, there is a lack of bibliometric analysis to help them better understand this field. Our aim is to analyze relevant literature focusing on development trajectory and research directions since the 21st century to provide valuable insights.MethodsPapers were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. Microsoft Excel, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace were used for bibliometric analysis.ResultsOf the 3337 papers published worldwide, China contributed 204, ranking fifth. The world's enthusiasm for this field has been growing since 2000, whereas China has been gradually entering since 2001. Although China had a late start, its growth has accelerated since around 2016 due to the reform of the medical postgraduate education system and the rapid development of Chinese information technology, despite no research explosive period has been yet noted. International institutions, notably the University of Toronto, worked closely with others, while Chinese institutions lacked of international and domestic cooperation. Sixteen stable cooperation clusters of international scholars were formed, while the collaboration between Chinese scholars was not yet stable. XR has been primarily applied in orthopedic surgery, cataract surgery, laparoscopic training and intraoperative use in neurosurgery worldwide.ConclusionsThere is strong enthusiasm and cooperation in the international research on the XR-based surgical training. Chinese scholars are making steady progress and have great potential in this area. There has not been noted an explosive research phase yet in the Chinese pace. The research on several surgical specialties has been summarized at the very first time. AR will gradually to be more involved and take important role of the research.

Project description:Recent studies indicate that food demand will increase by 35-56% over the period 2010-2050 due to population increase, economic development, and urbanization. Greenhouse systems allow for the sustainable intensification of food production with demonstrated high crop production per cultivation area. Breakthroughs in resource-efficient fresh food production merging horticultural and AI expertise take place with the international competition "Autonomous Greenhouse Challenge". This paper describes and analyzes the results of the third edition of this competition. The competition's goal is the realization of the highest net profit in fully autonomous lettuce production. Two cultivation cycles were conducted in six high-tech greenhouse compartments with operational greenhouse decision-making realized at a distance and individually by algorithms of international participating teams. Algorithms were developed based on time series sensor data of the greenhouse climate and crop images. High crop yield and quality, short growing cycles, and low use of resources such as energy for heating, electricity for artificial light, and CO2 were decisive in realizing the competition's goal. The results highlight the importance of plant spacing and the moment of harvest decisions in promoting high crop growth rates while optimizing greenhouse occupation and resource use. In this paper, images taken with depth cameras (RealSense) for each greenhouse were used by computer vision algorithms (Deepabv3+ implemented in detectron2 v0.6) in deciding optimum plant spacing and the moment of harvest. The resulting plant height and coverage could be accurately estimated with an R2 of 0.976, and a mIoU of 98.2, respectively. These two traits were used to develop a light loss and harvest indicator to support remote decision-making. The light loss indicator could be used as a decision tool for timely spacing. Several traits were combined for the harvest indicator, ultimately resulting in a fresh weight estimation with a mean absolute error of 22 g. The proposed non-invasively estimated indicators presented in this article are promising traits to be used towards full autonomation of a dynamic commercial lettuce growing environment. Computer vision algorithms act as a catalyst in remote and non-invasive sensing of crop parameters, decisive for automated, objective, standardized, and data-driven decision making. However, spectral indexes describing lettuces growth and larger datasets than the currently accessible are crucial to address existing shortcomings between academic and industrial production systems that have been encountered in this work.

Project description:With the rapid aging of the U.S. population, the mobility impairment is becoming a more and more challenging issue that affects a large number of individuals. The research presented in this paper aims at helping the mobility-challenged individuals with a novel robotic companion, which is a walker-type mobile robot capable of accompanying the human user and keeping user at the center for protection and possible power assistance. The robotic companion is equipped with a 3D computer vision system, which provides a unique capability of sensing the human-robot relative position/orientation without physical contact or the need for wearable sensors. As such, the robotic companion enables the user to walk freely with minimum disturbance to his/her normal gait, relieving the user from the physical and cognitive loads associated with the use of traditional assistive devices. For the development of the robotic companion, the authors designed and fabricated a low-cost, differentially steered mobile robotic platform, and also developed a unique image processing system to extract the position/orientation information from the 3D camera-captured images. Furthermore, an advanced motion control system was developed for the robotic companion, which provides novel solutions to the unique challenges such as sway reduction and noise reduction in digital differentiation. To quantify the performance, component and system-level experimentation was conducted, and the results demonstrated that robotic companion and its key components function as desired and the system is expected to reduce the user load and improve the user mobility in real-world scenarios.

This study focuses on students in technical fields, investigating their understanding of XR 3D visualization and proposing a unified training approach to improve both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The research also evaluates how this training influences students' attitudes towards XR technologies in various applications. Key findings reveal significant improvements in technical competencies and a more positive perception of XR technologies after the training. These results suggest that targeted XR education can better prepare students for the technological challenges in their respective industries.

Project description:Surgical education demands extensive knowledge and skill acquisition within limited time frames, often limited by reduced training opportunities and high-pressure environments. This review evaluates the effectiveness of extended reality-based head-mounted display (ExR-HMD) technology in surgical education, examining its impact on educational outcomes and exploring its strengths and limitations. Data from PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus, ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, WorldCat, and Google Scholar (Year: 2014-2024) were synthesized. After screening, 32 studies comparing ExR-HMD and traditional surgical training methods for medical students or residents were identified. Quality and bias were assessed using the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument, Newcastle-Ottawa Scale-Education, and Cochrane Risk of Bias Tools. Results indicate that ExR-HMD offers benefits such as increased immersion, spatial awareness, and interaction and supports motor skill acquisition theory and constructivist educational theories. However, challenges such as system fidelity, operational inconvenience, and physical discomfort were noted. Nearly half the studies reported outcomes comparable or superior to traditional methods, emphasizing the importance of social interaction. Limitations include study heterogeneity and English-only publications. ExR-HMD shows promise but needs educational theory integration and social interaction. Future research should address technical and economic barriers to global accessibility.
