An EMG dataset for Arabic sign language alphabet letters and numbers.

ABSTRACT: Nowadays, surface electromyography (sEMG) is evolving as a technology for hand gesture recognition. Detailed studies have revealed the capacity of EMG signals to access detailed information, particularly in the classification of hand gestures. Indeed, this advancement emerges as an interesting element in refining the recognition and interpretation of sign languages and exploring deeper into the phonology of signed languages. Aligned with this advancement and the need for a reliable and mobile sign language recognition system, we introduce a specialized sEMG dataset, acquired using the Myo armband. This device is adept at capturing recordings at frequencies of up to 200 Hz. The dataset focuses on the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet and 10 digits using hand gestures, with each gesture captured into 400 frames. This considerable collection of 18,716 samples was achieved with the cooperation of three contributors, providing a varied and comprehensive range of gestural data.

Project description:A fully-labelled dataset of Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) images is developed for research related to sign language recognition. The dataset will provide researcher the opportunity to investigate and develop automated systems for the deaf and hard of hearing people using machine learning, computer vision and deep learning algorithms. The contribution is a large fully-labelled dataset for Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) which is made publically available and free for all researchers. The dataset which is named ArSL2018 consists of 54,049 images for the 32 Arabic sign language sign and alphabets collected from 40 participants in different age groups. Different dimensions and different variations were present in images which can be cleared using pre-processing techniques to remove noise, center the image, etc. The dataset is made available publicly at https://data.mendeley.com/datasets/y7pckrw6z2/1.

UAlpha40: A comprehensive dataset of Urdu alphabet for Pakistan sign language.

Project description:Language bridges the gap of communication, and Sign Language (SL) is a native language among vocal and mute community. Every region has its own sign language. In Pakistan, Urdu Sign Language (USL) is a visual gesture language used by the deaf community for communication. The Urdu alphabet in Pakistan Sign Language consists not only of static gestures but also includes dynamic gestures. There are a total of 40 alphabets in Urdu sign language, with 36 being static and 4 being dynamic. While researchers have focused on the 36 static gestures, the 4 dynamic gestures have been overlooked. Additionally, there remains a lack of advancements in the development of Pakistan Sign Language (PSL) with respect to Urdu alphabets. A dataset named UAlpa40 has been compiled, comprising 22,280 images, among which 2,897 are originally created and 19,383 are created through noise or augmentation, representing the 36 static gestures and 393 videos representing the 4 dynamic gestures, completing the set of 40 Urdu alphabets. The standard gestures for USL are published by the Family Educational Services Foundation (FESF) for the deaf and mute community of Pakistan. This dataset was prepared in real-world environments under expert supervision, with volunteers ranging from males to females aged 20 to 45. This newly developed dataset can be utilized to train vision-based deep learning models, which in turn can aid in the development of sign language translators and finger-spelling systems for USL.

A surface electromyography and inertial measurement unit dataset for the Italian Sign Language alphabet.

Project description:Surface Electromyography (EMG) and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors are gaining the attention of the research community as data sources for automatic sign language recognition. In this regard, we provide a dataset of EMG and IMU data collected using the Myo Gesture Control Armband, during the execution of the 26 gestures of the Italian Sign Language alphabet. For each gesture, 30 data acquisitions were executed, composing a total of 780 samples included in the dataset. The gestures were performed by the same subject (male, 24 years old) in lab settings. EMG and IMU data were collected in a 2 seconds time window, at a sampling frequency of 200 Hz.

MyWSL: Malaysian words sign language dataset.

Project description:Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals use sign language as a means of communication. However, those around them, especially family members like the children of deaf adults, may face communication challenges if they are unfamiliar with sign language. This issue has prompted numerous researchers to conduct studies on sign language translation and recognition. However, there is currently no publicly available dataset specifically for Malaysian sign language. This article introduces an image dataset of the Malaysian Sign Language (MySL) hand gestures used in everyday situations. The dataset, named MyWSL2023, comprises 3,500 images of ten static Malaysian sign language words collected from five participants (two males and three females) aged between 20 and 21 years old. The data collection took place indoors under normal lighting conditions. The MyWSL2023 dataset, which has been made freely accessible to all researchers, serves as a valuable resource for not only investigating and developing automated systems for hearing-impaired and deaf individuals but also gesture and sign language recognition using vision-based methods. Sign Language Dataset for Automatic Motion Generation.

Project description:Several sign language datasets are available in the literature. Most of them are designed for sign language recognition and translation. This paper presents a new sign language dataset for automatic motion generation. This dataset includes phonemes for each sign (specified in HamNoSys, a transcription system developed at the University of Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany) and the corresponding motion information. The motion information includes sign videos and the sequence of extracted landmarks associated with relevant points of the skeleton (including face, arms, hands, and fingers). The dataset includes signs from three different subjects in three different positions, performing 754 signs including the entire alphabet, numbers from 0 to 100, numbers for hour specification, months, and weekdays, and the most frequent signs used in Spanish Sign Language (LSE). In total, there are 6786 videos and their corresponding phonemes (HamNoSys annotations). From each video, a sequence of landmarks was extracted using MediaPipe. The dataset allows training an automatic system for motion generation from sign language phonemes. This paper also presents preliminary results in motion generation from sign phonemes obtaining a Dynamic Time Warping distance per frame of 0.37.

Signer-Independent Arabic Sign Language Recognition System Using Deep Learning Model.

Project description:Every one of us has a unique manner of communicating to explore the world, and such communication helps to interpret life. Sign language is the popular language of communication for hearing and speech-disabled people. When a sign language user interacts with a non-sign language user, it becomes difficult for a signer to express themselves to another person. A sign language recognition system can help a signer to interpret the sign of a non-sign language user. This study presents a sign language recognition system that is capable of recognizing Arabic Sign Language from recorded RGB videos. To achieve this, two datasets were considered, such as (1) the raw dataset and (2) the face-hand region-based segmented dataset produced from the raw dataset. Moreover, operational layer-based multi-layer perceptron "SelfMLP" is proposed in this study to build CNN-LSTM-SelfMLP models for Arabic Sign Language recognition. MobileNetV2 and ResNet18-based CNN backbones and three SelfMLPs were used to construct six different models of CNN-LSTM-SelfMLP architecture for performance comparison of Arabic Sign Language recognition. This study examined the signer-independent mode to deal with real-time application circumstances. As a result, MobileNetV2-LSTM-SelfMLP on the segmented dataset achieved the best accuracy of 87.69% with 88.57% precision, 87.69% recall, 87.72% F1 score, and 99.75% specificity. Overall, face-hand region-based segmentation and SelfMLP-infused MobileNetV2-LSTM-SelfMLP surpassed the previous findings on Arabic Sign Language recognition by 10.970% accuracy.

Decoding English Alphabet Letters Using EEG Phase Information.

Project description:Increasing evidence indicates that the phase pattern and power of the low frequency oscillations of brain electroencephalograms (EEG) contain significant information during the human cognition of sensory signals such as auditory and visual stimuli. Here, we investigate whether and how the letters of the alphabet can be directly decoded from EEG phase and power data. In addition, we investigate how different band oscillations contribute to the classification and determine the critical time periods. An English letter recognition task was assigned, and statistical analyses were conducted to decode the EEG signal corresponding to each letter visualized on a computer screen. We applied support vector machine (SVM) with gradient descent method to learn the potential features for classification. It was observed that the EEG phase signals have a higher decoding accuracy than the oscillation power information. Low-frequency theta and alpha oscillations have phase information with higher accuracy than do other bands. The decoding performance was best when the analysis period began from 180 to 380 ms after stimulus presentation, especially in the lateral occipital and posterior temporal scalp regions (PO7 and PO8). These results may provide a new approach for brain-computer interface techniques (BCI) and may deepen our understanding of EEG oscillations in cognition.

BDSL 49: A comprehensive dataset of Bangla sign language.

Project description:Language is a method by which individuals express their thoughts. Each language has its own alphabet and numbers. Oral and written communication are both effective means of human interaction. However, each language has a sign language equivalent. Hearing-impaired and/or nonverbal individuals communicate through sign language. BDSL is the abbreviation for the Bangla sign language. The dataset contains images of hand signs in Bangla. The collection comprises 49 individual sign language images of the Bengali alphabet. BDSL49 is a set of 29,490 images with 49 labels. During data collection, images of fourteen distinct adults, each with a unique appearance and context, were captured. During data preparation, numerous strategies have been utilized to reduce noise. This dataset is available for free to researchers. Using techniques such as machine learning, computer vision, and deep learning, they are able to develop automated systems. Moreover, two models were applied to this dataset. The first is for detection, and the second is for identification.

Low resolution thermal imaging dataset of sign language digits.

Project description:The dataset contains low resolution thermal images corresponding to various sign language digits represented by hand and captured using the Omron D6T thermal camera. The resolution of the camera is 32×32 pixels. Because of the low resolution of the images captured by this camera, machine learning models for detecting and classifying sign language digits face additional challenges. Furthermore, the sensor's position and quality have a significant impact on the quality of the captured images. In addition, it is affected by external factors such as the temperature of the surface in comparison to the temperature of the hand. The dataset consists of 3200 images corresponding to ten sign digits, 0-9. Thus, each sign language digit consists of 320 images collected from different persons. The hand is oriented in various ways to capture all of the variations in the dataset.
