Perovskite Light-Emitting Devices Based on Solid-State Diffusion In Situ Dynamic Thermal Crystallization.

ABSTRACT: Due to the excellent photonic and electrical properties of metal halide perovskite materials, perovskite light-emitting devices have the potential to replace OLED devices as the next-generation of commercial light-emitting devices. In this article, we controlled the surface morphology of PbBr₂ using an in situ dynamic thermal crystallization process, which increased the specific surface area of the films and promoted the solid-state diffusion rate. The CsPbBr₃ PeLEDs prepared using this method achieved a maximum current efficiency of 7.1 cd/A at the voltage of 5 V, which was 200% higher than devices prepared using traditional spin-coating processes. These results proved that the in situ thermal dynamic crystallization process effectively improved the film quality of perovskite materials.

High-Efficiency CsPbBr3 Light-Emitting Diodes using One-Step Spin-Coating In Situ Dynamic Thermal Crystallization.

Project description:All-inorganic perovskite materials (such as CsPbBr3) have received widespread attention because of their better stability than hybrid counterparts, but their poor film morphology and crystalline quality limit their application in perovskite light-emitting devices (PeLEDs). Some previous studies have attempted to improve the morphology and crystalline quality of perovskite films by heating the substrate, but there are still some problems such as inaccurate temperature control, excessive temperature is not conducive to flexible applications, and the mechanism of action is not clear. In this work, we used a one-step spin-coating, low-temperature in situ thermally assisted crystallization process, in which the temperature was accurately monitored using a thermocouple in the range of 23-80 °C, and explored the effect of the in situ thermally assisted crystallization temperature on the crystallization of the all-inorganic perovskite material CsPbBr3 and the performance of PeLEDs. In addition, we focused on the influence mechanism for the in situ thermally assisted crystallization process on the surface morphology and phase composition of the perovskite films and promote its possible application in inkjet printing and scratch coating methods.

Dynamic photonic perovskite light-emitting diodes with post-treatment-enhanced crystallization as writable and wipeable inscribers.

Project description:Controllable photonic patterns have attracted great attention for various applications in displays, smart sensors, and communications. Conventional patterned light-emitting-diode (LED) systems require complicated design, complex procedure, and advanced equipment. Moreover, permanent properties of the fabricated patterns on LED restrict it from various important applications. Herein, we present an innovative writable and wipeable perovskite light-emitting-diode (WWPeLED) device, which tactfully utilizes the large variation of turn-on voltage originating from the external quantum efficiency (EQE) difference under controllable thermal treatment. The turn-on voltages with/without thermal-treatment devices exhibit a large gap of over 5 V, and the thermal-treatment electroluminescence intensity is more than 10 times higher than that of non-thermal-treatment devices. The new phenomena open up an effective way of controlling illumination with desired pattern designs. Additionally, the distinct handwriting fonts and habits as well as printing patterns with illumination WWPeLED are also realized. Furthermore, these written and printed features can be totally wiped out with an 11 V cleaning voltage, turning the devices as a regular fully bright PeLED. The stability and repeatability tests prove the robustness of WWPeLED in both mechanical and electroluminescence performance after a long period of operations. The innovative WWPeLED devices may find prospective applications in various optoelectronic devices and flexible integrated systems.

High brightness formamidinium lead bromide perovskite nanocrystal light emitting devices.

Project description:Formamidinium lead halide (FAPbX3) has attracted greater attention and is more prominent recently in photovoltaic devices due to its broad absorption and higher thermal stability in comparison to more popular methylammonium lead halide MAPbX3. Herein, a simple and highly reproducible room temperature synthesis of device grade high quality formamidinium lead bromide CH(NH2)2PbBr3 (FAPbBr3) colloidal nanocrystals (NC) having high photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) of 55-65% is reported. In addition, we demonstrate high brightness perovskite light emitting device (Pe-LED) with these FAPbBr3 perovskite NC thin film using 2,2',2″-(1,3,5-Benzinetriyl)-tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) commonly known as TPBi and 4,6-Bis(3,5-di(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)-2-methylpyrimidine (B3PYMPM) as electron transport layers (ETL). The Pe-LED device with B3PYMPM as ETL has bright electroluminescence of up to 2714 cd/m2, while the Pe-LED device with TPBi as ETL has higher peak luminous efficiency of 6.4 cd/A and peak luminous power efficiency of 5.7 lm/W. To our knowledge this is the first report on high brightness light emitting device based on CH(NH2)2PbBr3 widely known as FAPbBr3 nanocrystals in literature.

Dual-function perovskite light-emitting/sensing devices for optical interactive display.

Project description:Interactive display devices integrating multiple functions have become a development trend of display technology. The excellent luminescence properties of perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) make it an ideal luminescent material for the next generation of wide-color gamut displays. Here we design and fabricate dual-function light-sensing/displaying light-emitting devices based on PQDs. The devices can display information as an output port, and simultaneously sense outside light signals as an input port and modulate the display information in a non-contact mode. The dual functions were attributed to the device designs: (1) the hole transport layer in the devices also acts as the light-sensing layer to absorb outside light signals; (2) the introduced hole trapping layer interface can trap holes originating from the light-sensing layer, and thus tune the charge transport properties and the light-emitting intensities. The sensing and display behavior of the device can be further modulated by light signals with different time and space information. This fusion of sensing and display functions has broad prospects in non-contact interactive screens and communication ports.

Anion-Exchange Blue Perovskite Quantum Dots for Efficient Light-Emitting Devices.

Project description:In this study, blue perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) were prepared using didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), which can passivate surface defects caused by the loss of surface ligands and reduce particle size distribution. After the passivation of DDAB, blue CsPbClxBr3-x PQDs dispersed in n-octane produced a more compact and uniform PQD thin film than the non-passivated ones. The resulting device showed a stabile lifetime, and an EL peak of 470 nm and a maximum EQE of 1.63% were obtained at an operating voltage of 2.6 V and a current density of 0.34 mA/cm2. This work aims to provide a simple method to prepare blue-emitting PQDs and high-performance PQD-based light-emitting devices.

Monitoring and scoring counter-diffusion protein crystallization experiments in capillaries by in situ dynamic light scattering.

Project description:In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of using in situ Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) to monitor counter-diffusion crystallization experiments in capillaries. Firstly, we have validated the quality of the DLS signal in thin capillaries, which is comparable to that obtained in standard quartz cuvettes. Then, we have carried out DLS measurements of a counter-diffusion crystallization experiment of glucose isomerase in capillaries of different diameters (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 mm) in order to follow the temporal evolution of protein supersaturation. Finally, we have compared DLS data with optical recordings of the progression of the crystallization front and with a simulation model of counter-diffusion in 1D.

Planar defect-free pure red perovskite light-emitting diodes via metastable phase crystallization.

Project description:Solution-processable all-inorganic CsPbI3-xBrx perovskite holds great potential for pure red light-emitting diodes. However, the widely existing defects in this mixed halide perovskite markedly limit the efficiency and stability of present light-emitting diode devices. We here identify that intragrain Ruddlesden-Popper planar defects are primary forms of such defects in the CsPbI3-xBrx thin film owing to the lattice strain caused by inhomogeneous halogen ion distribution. To eliminate these defects, we develop a stepwise metastable phase crystallization strategy to minimize the CsPbI3-xBrx perovskite lattice strain, which brings planar defect-free CsPbI3-xBrx thin film with improved radiative recombination, narrowed emission band, and enhanced spectral stability. Using these high-quality thin films, we fabricate spectrally stable pure red perovskite light-emitting diodes, showing 17.8% external quantum efficiency and 9000 candela meter-2 brightness with color coordinates required by Rec. 2020.

Green Light-Emitting Devices Based on Perovskite CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots.

Project description:In this paper, high quality green-emitting CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) are successfully synthesized by hot-injection method. Different injection temperatures are tested to optimize the synthesis conditions. High brightness with the photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (QYs) up to 90% and narrow size-distribution with the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 18.5 nm are obtained under the optimized conditions. Green light emitting diodes (LEDs) based on the CsPbBr3 QDs are successfully demonstrated by combining solution method with vapor deposition method. Composite films of poly[9,9-dioctylfluorene-co- N-[4-(3-methylpropyl)]-diphenylamine] (TFB) and bathocuproine (BCP) layers are chosen as the hole-transporting and the electron-transporting layers, respectively. The highly bright green QD-based light-emitting devices (QLEDs) showing maximum luminance up to 46,000 cd/m2 with a low turn on voltage of 2.3 V, and peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.7%, corresponding to 19.9 cd/A in luminance efficiency. These devices also show high color purity for electroluminescence (EL) with FWHM <20 nm, and no redshift and broadening with increasing voltage as well as a spectral match between PL and EL.

Tunable Multicolor Fluorescence of Perovskite-Based Composites for Optical Steganography and Light-Emitting Devices.

Project description:Multicolor fluorescence of mixed halide perovskites enormously enables their applications in photonics and optoelectronics. However, it remains an arduous task to obtain multicolor emissions from perovskites containing single halogen to avoid phase segregation. Herein, a fluorescent composite containing Eu-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), 0D Cs4PbBr6, and 3D CsPbBr3 is synthesized. Under excitations at 365 nm and 254 nm, the pristine composite emits blue (B) and red (R) fluorescence, which are ascribed to radiative defects within Cs4PbBr6 and 5D0→7FJ transitions of Eu3+, respectively. Interestingly, after light soaking in the ambient environment, the blue fluorescence gradually converts into green (G) emission due to the defect repairing and 0D-3D phase conversion. This permanent and unique photochromic effect enables anticounterfeiting and microsteganography with increased security through a micropatterning technique. Moreover, the RGB luminescence is highly stable after encapsulation by a transparent polymer layer. Thus, trichromatic light-emitting modules are fabricated by using the fluorescent composites as color-converting layers, which almost fully cover the standard color gamut. Therefore, this work innovates a strategy for construction of tunable multicolor luminescence by manipulating the radiative defects and structural dimensionality.

Suppressing thermal quenching via defect passivation for efficient quasi-2D perovskite light-emitting diodes.

Project description:Emission thermal quenching is commonly observed in quasi-2D perovskite emitters, which causes the severe drop in luminescence efficiency for the quasi-2D perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) during practical operations. However, this issue is often neglected and rarely studied, and the root cause of the thermal quenching has not been completely revealed now. Here, we develop a passivation strategy via the 2,7-dibromo-9,9-bis (3'-diethoxylphosphorylpropyl)-fluorene to investigate and suppress the thermal quenching. The agent can effectively passivate coordination-unsaturated Pb2+ defects of both surface and bulk of the film without affecting the perovskite crystallization, which helps to more truly demonstrate the important role of defects in thermal quenching. And our results reveal the root cause that the quenching will be strengthened by the defect-promoted exciton-phonon coupling. Ultimately, the PeLEDs with defect passivation achieve an improved external quantum efficiency (EQE) over 22% and doubled operation lifetime at room temperature, and can maintain about 85% of the initial EQE at 85 °C, much higher than 17% of the control device. These findings provide an important basis for fabricating practical PeLEDs for lighting and displays.
