ABSTRACT: Melanoseriskangdingensis, a new species native to western Sichuan, China, is firstly described and illustrated, and its conservation status is also assessed. It bears resemblance to M.macrantha and M.bracteata in terms of morphology; however, there are distinguishing characteristics in terms of their leaf structure, presence of bracts, hairiness of involucre, number of florets, and length of both stamen tube and achene's beak.

Project description:In this paper, we describe Ixeridiumnujiangense, a novel species identified in southwestern Yunnan, China. Two populations have been found along the riverbanks of the Nujiang River in Yongde and Zhenkang Counties. Morphologically, I.nujiangense is most similar to the recently described I.malingheense, but it can be readily distinguished by its mostly divided basal leaves, narrower non-clasping cauline leaves, notably shorter corolla tube, pale brown anthers, and considerably longer beak of achenes.

Project description:Senecio changii (Asteraceae: Senecioneae), a new species from Muli, Sichuan, southwestern China, is described. It is distinguished in Chinese Senecio s.s. by having lyrate-pinnatisect to pinnatisect leaves and a single terminal large discoid capitulum which is somewhat nodding. Evidence from floral micromorphology, karyology and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear ITS/ETS sequence data all support its membership within Senecio s.s.

Meiotic studies in some species of tribe Cichorieae (Asteraceae) from Western Himalayas.

Project description:The present paper deals with meiotic studies in 15 species belonging to 6 genera of the tribe Cichorieae from various localities of Western Himalayas. The chromosome number has been reported for the first time in Hieracium crocatum (2n = 10) and Lactuca lessertiana (2n = 2x = 16). Further, intraspecific variability has been reported for the first time in H. umbellatum (2n = 2x = 10 and 2n = 6x = 54), Tragopogon dubius (2n = 2x = 14 and 2n = 4x = 28), and T. gracilis (2n = 2x = 14). The chromosome report of 2n = 2x = 10 in Youngia tenuifolia is made for the first time in India. Maximum numbers of the populations show laggards, chromosome stickiness, and cytomixis from early prophase to telophase-II, leading to the formation of aneuploid cells or meiocytes with double chromosome number. Such meiotic abnormalities produce unreduced pollen grains and the reduced pollen viability.

Melanoserispenghuana (Lactucinae, Cichorieae, Asteraceae), a new species from North-central Yunnan, China.

Project description:In this paper, we describe a new species, Melanoserispenghuana, from Mt. Jiaozi Xueshan located in North-central Yunnan, China. Despite its morphological similarities to M.likiangensis, M.penghuana exhibits distinct differences in leaf texture, shape of terminal lobes, indumentum of leaves, peduncles, and involucres, as well as the length of the achenes. Additionally, the conservation status of this species is classified as Vulnerable through data analysis from two field surveys.

Sinoseneciopingwuensis (Asteraceae, Senecioneae), a new species from northern Sichuan, China.

Project description:Sinoseneciopingwuensis (Asteraceae, Senecioneae), a new species from Pingwu county in northern Sichuan, China, is described and illustrated. This species is distinguished in Sinosenecio by having leathery, glabrous, ovate or ovate-oblong leaves often pinnately-veined and solitary capitula 2.3-4.3 cm in diameter, a unique character combination hitherto never recorded in the genus. Two floral micromorphological characters (configuration of filament collar of stamens and anther endothecial cell wall thickenings) and achene surface features of the new species are reported. Color photographs of living plants and a distribution map are also provided for the new species.

Sinoseneciominshanicus (Asteraceae, Senecioneae), a new species from south-eastern Gansu and northern Sichuan, China.

Project description:Sinoseneciominshanicus (Asteraceae, Senecioneae), a new species from south-eastern Gansu (Wenxian and Zhugqu counties) and northern Sichuan (Pingwu county), China, is described and illustrated. This species is similar to S.rotundifolius, a species locally endemic to Songpan county in northern Sichuan, in having a scapigerous habit, orbicular leaves and solitary capitula, but differs by the presence (vs. absence) of stolons and by having thinner rhizomes (ca. 2 mm vs. more than 5 mm in diameter), stems proximally sparsely fulvous arachnoid or glabrescent (vs. densely sericeous-villous) and obscure (vs. conspicuous) main veins on adaxial surface of leaves. The chromosome number of the new species is reported to be 2n = 60. Colour photographs of living plants in the wild and a distribution map are provided for the new species and S.rotundifolius. The geographical distribution of S.rotundifolius is also corrected, with the previous record of this species from south-eastern Gansu (Wenxian county) actually referring to S.minshanicus.

Two new mountainous species of Lactuca (Cichorieae, Asteraceae) from Iran, one presenting a new, possibly myrmecochorous achene variant.

Project description:It is shown that the concept of the Iranian endemic Lactuca polyclada in the sense of both its original author Boissier and its current use actually admixes two entirely different species, as was first noted by Beauverd a hundred years ago but has been neglected by later workers. One is a putative relative of Lactuca rosularis, the other was recognised by Beauverd as a member of the genus Cicerbita. The name Lactuca polyclada Boiss. is lectotypified here, maintaining its use as established by Beauverd for the Cicerbita species. Both species are morphologically delimited and mature achenes of Cicerbita polyclada are illustrated for the first time. The putative relative of Lactuca rosularis, a rare local endemic of the summit area of Kuh e-Dena, which has remained without a valid name by now, is described as a new species, Lactuca denaensis N. Kilian & Djavadi, and illustrated. A third member of the Lactuca rosularis group, Lactuca hazaranensis Djavadi & N. Kilian, discovered among a recent collection and apparently being a rare chasmophyte of the Hazaran mountain massif in the province of Kerman, Iran, is described as a species new to science, illustrated and delimited from the other two species. This new species has peculiar achenes representing a hitherto unknown variant: the body of the beaked achenes is divided into two segments by a transversal constriction in the distal third. The proximal segment contains the embryo, the distal segment is solid with a lipid-containing yellow tissue. The easily detachable pappus and the equally easily detachable beak potentially obstruct dispersal by wind. Since detachment of the beak also exposes the lipid-containing tissue of the distal segment, its potential as an elaiosome and myrmecochory as a possible mode of dispersal are discussed.

Phylogenomic analysis of Bupleurum in Western Sichuan, China, including an overlooked new species.

Project description:A comparative analysis of chloroplast (cp) genomes and 45s nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA), and a phylogenomic study of six closely related species (including an overlooked new species) of genus Bupleurum from the western part of Sichuan Province in southwestern China were performed. The six species are similar morphologically and it is difficult to identify them; moreover, their genetic relationships remain unclear. It was found that the cp genomes of the six Bupleurum species were extremely similar, and they were highly homogeneous in terms of cp genome structure, genes and its arrangement. Intergenic spacer rpl32-trnL, petA-psbJ, trnK-rps16, and the coding gene ycf1 were considered highly variable. In phylogenetic trees constructed based on the complete cp genome, protein-coding sequences, nrDNA and ITS sequences, Chinese Bupleurum species all formed two major clades; among these trees, nrDNA tree had the best species resolution; the highly variable regions showed no advantage over other molecular markers. Among the six Bupleurum species, B. malconense, B. sichuanense were close relatives to B. chinense and B. yinchowense, B. chaishoui may also be a consanguinity, while B. microcephalum, B. wenchuanense, and the new species B. pseudochaishoui were closely related. At the end, the new species B. pseudochaishoui Z. Chao sp. nov. was described and illustrated, and a key to the six species was tabulated.

Phenolics from Rhagadiolus stellatus (Asteraceae, Cichorieae).

Project description:Rhagadiolus stellatus Gaertn., a Mediterranean member of the Cichorieae tribe of the Asteraceae family used as a food plant, was analyzed for its spectrum of phenolic compounds. Kaempferol 3-O-β-glucoside 1, kaempferol 3-O-β-rutinoside (nicotiflorin) 2, quercetin 3-O-β-glucoside 3, and luteolin 4 were isolated from the n-butanol layer of a methanolic extract of whole plants of Rh. stellatus of Spanish origin by repeated Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Structures were determined based on NMR and MS data as well as by comparison with literature data. Additionally, chlorogenic acid 5 and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid 6 were detected by HPLC/DAD and HPLC/MS. Chemosystematic implications of the presented findings are discussed in comparison with other members of the Cichorieae tribe.
