Dataset on Cs-137 in waters surrounding Taiwan.

ABSTRACT: The Fukushima accident released short-lived Cs-134 and longer-lived Cs-137 to the ocean. The amount, although substantial, is much less than that produced during the atomic bomb tests 60 yrs ago. Cs-134 and Cs-137 are anthropogenic radionuclides and soluble in seawater; hence, the radioactivity can be used as a tracer for special events or currents. Samples of Cs-134 and Cs-137 in seawater were collected around Taiwan, including the Kuroshio, the northern South China Sea, the Taiwan Strait, and the southern East China Sea from 2018 to 2021. The average surface Cs-137 activity was 1.18±0.25 Bq m ^- ³, and the activities of Cs-134 samples were all under the detection limit. Complete data are archived, including sampling date, location, water depth, temperature, salinity, and Cs-137 activity; the total sample amount is 577.

Project description:The majority of the area contaminated by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident is covered with forests. We developed a dataset for radiocaesium (137Cs) in trees, soil, and mushrooms measured at numerous forest sites. The 137Cs activity concentration and inventory data reported in scientific journal papers written in English and Japanese, governmental reports, and governmental monitoring data on the web were collated. The ancillary information describing the forest stands were also collated, and further environmental information (e.g. climate) was derived from the other databases using longitude and latitude coordinates of the sampling locations. The database contains 8593, 4105, and 3189 entries of activity concentration data for trees, soil, and mushrooms, and 471 and 3521 entries of inventory data for trees and soil, respectively, which were collected from 2011 to 2017, and covers the entire Fukushima prefecture. The data can be used to document and understand the spatio-temporal dynamics of radiocaesium in the affected region and to aid the development and validation of models of radiocaesium dynamics in contaminated forests.

A Dataset of Deep-Sea Fishes Surveyed by Research Vessels in the Waters around Taiwan.

Project description:The study of deep-sea fish fauna is hampered by a lack of data due to the difficulty and high cost incurred in its surveys and collections. Taiwan is situated along the edge of the Eurasia fig, at the junction of three Large Marine Ecosystems or Ecoregions of the East China Sea, South China Sea and the Philippines. As nearly two-thirds of its surrounding marine ecosystems are deep-sea environments, Taiwan is expected to hold a rich diversity of deep-sea fish. However, in the past, no research vessels were employed to collect fish data on site. Only specimens, caught by bottom trawl fishing in the waters hundreds of meters deep and missing precise locality information, were collected from Dasi and Donggang fishing harbors. Began in 2001, with the support of National Science Council, research vessels were made available to take on the task of systematically collecting deep-sea fish specimens and occurrence records in the waters surrounding Taiwan. By the end of 2006, a total of 3,653 specimens, belonging to 26 orders, 88 families, 198 genera and 366 species, were collected in addition to data such as sampling site geographical coordinates and water depth, and fish body length and weight. The information, all accessible from the "Database of Taiwan's Deep-Sea Fauna and Its Distribution (http://deepsea.biodiv.tw/)" as part of the "Fish Database of Taiwan," can benefit the study of temporal and spatial changes in distribution and abundance of fish fauna in the context of global deep-sea biodiversity.

16S rRNA gene amplicon dataset of prokaryotic communities from a subantarctic marine ecosystem: Ushuaia Bay and surrounding waters.

Project description:We provide a 16S rRNA gene dataset of prokaryotic assemblages of a subantarctic marine ecosystem. Samples were collected at 2 stations (one near Ushuaia Bay and the other close to Bridges islands in the Beagle Channel). At each station, 2 depths (subsurface and bottom waters) were sampled in february, march, may and september during 2018, giving a total of 10 samples. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing (V4 hypervariable region) was performed with the Illumina MiSeq platform. A total of 1116 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) were recovered from the dataset. The sequences were taxonomically assigned to Alphaproteobacteria (23 ± 2%, mean ± standard error), Gammaproteobacteria (17 ± 1.5%), Flavobacteriia (8 ± 2%), Deltaproteobacteria (3.7 ± 0.5%), Acidimicrobiia (1.7 ± 0.1%), Planctomycetia (1.9 ± 0.4%), and AB16 group (1.7 ± 0.3%). Sequences affiliated with Archaea were abundant, reaching one third of analyzed sequences, mainly Thaumarchaeota (22 ± 3%), and Thermoplasmata (10 ± 1%). Together, sequences assigned to all these groups accounted for more than 90% of the sequences. This dataset constitutes a valuable resource for future scientific research aiming to unveil the role of these communities in ecosystem services such as carbon and nutrient cycling, and pollutants degradation. This will turn into benefits for future environmental monitoring and preservation actions, considering the tangible heritage of Ushuaia Bay and surrounding waters.

Distribution and budget of 137Cs in the China Seas.

Project description:Cesium-137 is one of the most abundant anthropogenic radionuclides released by atmospheric nuclear testing and nuclear accidents, and accordingly it may significantly impact the health of humans and marine environmental eco-systems. Documenting the distribution and inventory of 137Cs is thus a crucial task. In this study, we collected a large number of datasets with field observations of 137Cs in the China Seas, in order to provide an in-depth understanding of 137Cs budgets and distributions. The activity and inventory of 137Cs in China Seas' sediments showed large spatial variations, related to the 137Cs source, sedimentation rates and the mineral composition of sediments. The 137Cs concentration in sediments decreased with distance from the shore, generally tracing the distribution of sedimentation rates. High 137Cs inventories in the water column indicated a high solubility and long mean residence times. The mean residence times of 137Cs in the China Seas were determined to be 45.6 ± 3.8 years for the South China Sea (SCS), 36.8 ± 3.1 years for the East China Sea (ECS), and 12.0 ± 1.0 years for the Yellow Sea (YS). A 137Cs mass balance suggests that oceanic input from the north Pacific is the dominant 137Cs source to the China Seas, contributing about 96.9% of this substance. Furthermore, the bulk of 137Cs remains dissolved in the SCS water column, while 137Cs is mostly deposited to the sediments of the ECS and the YS. This new compilation of the activity level and inventory of 137Cs help to establish background levels for future 137Cs studies in the China Seas.

Gene expression in blood of mice with internal exposure to Cs-137

Project description:Cesium-137 is a radionuclide of concern in fallout from reactor accidents or nuclear detonations. When ingested or inhaled, it can expose the entire body for an extended period of time, potentially contributing to serious health consequences ranging from acute radiation syndrome to increased cancer risks. In order to identify changes in gene expression that may be informative for detecting such exposure, and to begin examining the molecular responses involved, we have profiled global gene expression in mice injected with 137CsCl. We extracted RNA from the blood of control or 137CsCl-injected mice at 2, 3, 5, 20 or 30 days after exposure. Gene expression was measured using Agilent Whole Mouse Genome Microarrays, and the data was analyzed using BRB-ArrayTools.

Source evaluation of 137Cs in foodstuffs based on trace 134Cs radioactivity measurements following the Fukushima nuclear accident.

Project description:We performed gamma-ray analysis to determine the amount of radioactive cesium-134 (134Cs) and cesium-137 (137Cs) in 259 foodstuffs five years after the Fukushima nuclear accident of 2011. Using measurements of trace 134Cs radioactivity, we investigated the contribution ratio of 137Cs derived from the Fukushima accident on 2011 and pre-Fukushima. The median detected concentration of radiocesium (134Cs + 137Cs) in foodstuffs was 0.33 Bq/kg-raw, a much lower radioactivity than the Japanese regulatory limit. However, a few samples had particularly high radioactivity, including some dried mushrooms sold in Iwate Prefecture that had a 137Cs radioactivity concentration as high as 441 Bq/kg. Our analysis showed that 75.5% of the 137Cs detected in these mushrooms originated from the Fukushima accident, and 24.5% was originated before the Fukushima event. Our study clarified the 137Cs contamination in 75 of all 259 food samples before and after the Fukushima nuclear accident, showing that not only mushrooms but also fish had been contaminated before the Fukushima accident.

New predictions of 137Cs dynamics in forests after the Fukushima nuclear accident.

Project description:Most of the area contaminated by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident is covered by forest. In this paper, we updated model predictions of temporal changes in the 137Cs dynamics using the latest observation data and newly provided maps of the predicted 137Cs activity concentration for wood, which is the most commercially important part of the tree body. Overall, the previous prediction and latest observation data were in very good agreement. However, further validation revealed that the migration from the soil surface organic layer to the mineral soil was overestimated for evergreen needleleaf forests. The new prediction of the 137Cs inventory showed that although the 137Cs distribution within forests differed among forest types in the first 5 years, the difference diminished in the later phase. Besides, the prediction of the wood 137Cs activity concentrations reproduced the different trends of the 137Cs activity concentrations for cedar, oak, and pine trees. Our simulation suggests that the changes of the wood 137Cs activity concentration over time will slow down after 5-10 years. Although the model uncertainty should be considered and monitoring and model updating must continue, the study provides helpful information on the 137Cs dynamics within forest ecosystems and the changes in wood contamination.

Porous three-dimensional graphene foam/Prussian blue composite for efficient removal of radioactive (137)Cs.

Project description:In this study, a simple one-step hydrothermal reaction is developed to prepare composite based on Prussian blue (PB)/reduced graphene oxide foam (RGOF) for efficient removal of radioactive cesium ((137)Cs) from contaminated water. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy show that cubic PB nanoparticles are decorated on the RGO surface. Owing to the combined benefits of RGOF and PB, the composite shows excellent removal efficiency (99.5%) of (137)Cs from the contaminated water. The maximum adsorption capacity is calculated to be 18.67?mg/g. An adsorption isotherm fit-well the Langmuir model with a linear regression correlation value of 0.97. This type of composite is believed to hold great promise for the clean-up of (137)Cs from contaminated water around nuclear plants and/or after nuclear accidents.

Composite Zn(II) Ferrocyanide/Polyethylenimine Cryogels for Point-of-Use Selective Removal of Cs-137 Radionuclides.

Project description:The feasibility of several approaches to the fabrication of monolith composite cryogels containing transition-metal ferrocyanides for Cs+ ion uptake has been evaluated. Although in the series of investigated metal ion precursors (Cu(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), and Co(II)), in situ formation of the sorption active phase in polyethyleneimine (PEI) cryogel was feasible only in the case of Zn(II) ferrocyanide, this approach has shown significant advantages over the immobilization of ex situ synthesized ferrocyanide nanoparticles. Nanoparticles of the mixed ferrocyanide Zn1.85K0.33[Fe(CN)6] formed in situ had an average size of 516 ± 146 nm and were homogeneously distributed in the monolith located at the polymer surface rather than embedded in the matrix. The Young modulus of the PEI cryogel increased after modification from 25 to 57 kPa, but composites maintained high permeability to the flow. Sorption of Cs+ ions has been investigated at superficial velocity up to 8 m/h. Steep breakthrough profiles and uptake efficiency of >99.5% until breakthrough point confirmed that a supermacroporous structure of the monolith composite assured good mass transfer, so that intraparticle diffusion was not the limiting stage of sorption kinetics. Application of the rate-constant distribution model (RCD model) to analyze the breakthrough curves of Cs+ sorption allowed the identification of two types of sorption sites with a difference in sorption rate constants of ~1 log unit. Most likely, sorption on "fast" sorption sites was governed by ion exchange between Cs+ ions in solution and K+ ions in the ferrocyanide lattice. Cs-137 radionuclide removal was investigated using the monolith composite columns of various geometries at superficial velocity up to the 6.6 m/h; specific gamma activity was reduced from 265 kBq/L to the background level, showing high potential of these materials for POU application.

Development of a Novel DGT Passive Sampler for Measuring Cs-137 In Situ in Marine Environments.

Project description:Cs-137 is the most released fission product in the marine environment. It is important to develop a robust in situ technique for its monitoring. The existing diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) passive sampling techniques for in situ measurement of Cs+ have some limitations due to the ion competition and high pH of seawater. A new DGT sampler based on potassium zinc hexacyanoferrate (KZFCN) as a binding layer has been developed and investigated for the measurement of the time-weighted average concentration of Cs-137 in seawater. This binding layer proved a working pH range of 2-12 and an ionic strength of up to 0.75 M. Two types of diffusive gels were tested and agarose gel (AGE) was chosen for the KZFCN-DGT sampler. The measured Cs+ diffusion coefficient (1.71 × 10-5 cm2·s-1 at 25 °C) in the diffusive gel from seawater was within the expected range published in the literature. The measured concentrations of Cs-137 in seawater obtained by laboratory deployments of the KZFCN-DGT samplers for up to 4 weeks showed good precision (RSD = 13%) and accuracy (relative error = 8.5%) values. The performance test results demonstrated that the KZFCN-DGT sampler is suitable for long-term monitoring of Cs-137 in seawater due to its high capacity and resistance to ion competition and high pH.
