Histoplasma capsulatum is a pathogenic fungus that exists in two distinct forms. The saprophytic mycelial phase inhabits moist soil environments; once inhaled, hyphae and conidia convert to a unicellular yeast phase that is capable of parasitizing macrophage phagolysosomes.
