Project description:In this paper, large-area magnetic-plasmonic Ni@Au core-shell nanoparticle arrays (NPAs) with tunable compositions were successfully fabricated by a direct laser interference ablation (DLIA) incorporated with thermal dewetting method. The magnetic properties of the Ni@Au core-shell NPAs were analyzed and the saturation magnetization (M s) of the Ni80@Au20 nanoparticles was found to be higher than that of nickel-only nanoparticles with the same diameter. Using Rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a Raman reporter molecule, the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) property of the Ni@Au core-shell NPAs with a grain size distribution of 48 ± 42 nm and a short-distance order of about 200 nm was examined. A SERS enhancement factor of 2.5 × 106 was realized on the Ni50@Au50 NPA substrate, which was 9 times higher than that for Au nanoparticles with the same size distribution. This was due to the enhanced local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) between the ferromagnetic Ni cores and the surface polariton of the Au shells of each nanoparticle. The fabrication of the Ni@Au core-shell NPAs with different compositions offers a new avenue to tailor the optical and magnetic properties of the nanostructured films for chemical and diagnostic applications.

Project description:A solid-phase photochemical method produces Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles (NPs) with a sharp size distribution and varying composition in AgBr crystals (Au-Ag@AgBr). These features render Au-Ag@AgBr promising as a material for the plasmonic photocatalyst further to provide a possibility of elucidating the action mechanism due to the optical tunability. This study shows that the visible-light activity of Au-Ag@AgBr for degradation of model water pollutant is very sensitive to the alloy composition with a maximum at the mole percent of Au to all Ag in AgBr (y) = 0.012 mol%. Clear positive correlation is observed between the photocatalytic activity and the quality factor defined as the ratio of the peak energy to the full width at half maximum of the localized surface plasmon resonance band. This finding indicates that Au-Ag@AgBr works as a local electromagnetic field enhancement-type plasmonic photocatalyst in which the Au-Ag NPs mainly promotes the charge separation. This conclusion was further supported by the kinetic analysis of the light intensity-dependence of external quantum yield.

Project description:Hollow noble metal nanoparticles have excellent performance not only in surface catalysis but also in optics. In this work, the hollow Au-Ag alloy nanorices are fabricated by the galvanic replacement reaction. The dark-field spectrum points out that there is a big difference in the optical properties between the pure Ag nanorices and the hollow alloy nanorices that exhibit highly tunable localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) and that possess larger radiative damping, which is also indicated by the finite element method. Furthermore, the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and oxidation test indicate that hollow Au-Ag alloy nanorices show good anti-oxidation and have broad application prospects in surface-plasmon-related fields.

Project description:Engineering the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) properties is a critical issue for improving device performance in the fields of plasmonics, nanophotonics, optoelectronics, and electrochemistry. Here, we demonstrated a programmable manipulation of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect using composition-adjustable Ag-Au substitutional alloy microcages (SAMCs) through a facile NaBH4-cooperative galvanic replacement reaction. The SPR frequency of the Ag-Au SAMCs can be continuously and exquisitely manipulated without resonance damping or broadening via accurate adjustment of the elemental composition distribution at the perfect homogeneity on the atomic-level. Significantly, both the tunable SPR frequency and excellent chemical stability synergistically endow the hollow Ag-Au SAMCs with excellent SERS sensitivity and reproducibility, which lays a foundation for the realization of trace detection of thiram at an ultralow concentration of 1 × 10-12 M. This strategy is a promising candidate for efficient promotion of the SERS activity for metal-based substrates.

Project description:It is well-known that Ag-Au bimetallic nanoplates have attracted significant research interest due to their unique plasmonic properties and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). In recent years, there have been many studies on the fabrication of bimetallic nanostructures. However, controlling the shape, size, and structure of bimetallic nanostructures still has many challenges. In this work, we present the results of the synthesis of silver nanoplates (Ag NPls), and Ag-Au bimetallic core/shell and alloy nanostructures, using seed-mediated growth under green LED excitation and a gold salt (HAuCl4) as a precursor of gold. The results show that the optical properties and crystal structure strongly depend on the amount of added gold salt. Interestingly, when the amount of gold(x) in the sample was less than 0.6 μmol (x < 0.6 μmol), the structural nature of Ag-Au was core/shell, in contrast x > 0.6 μmol gave the alloy structure. The morphology of the obtained nanostructures was investigated using the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) technique. The UV-Vis extinction spectra of Ag-Au nanostructures showed localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) bands in the spectral range of 402-627 nm which changed from two peaks to one peak as the amount of gold increased. Ag-Au core/shell and alloy nanostructures were utilized as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates to detect methylene blue (MB) (10-7 M concentration). Our experimental observations indicated that the highest enhancement factor (EF) of about 1.2 × 107 was obtained with Ag-Au alloy. Our detailed investigations revealed that the Ag-Au alloy exhibited significant EF compared to pure metal Ag and Ag-Au core/shell nanostructures. Moreover, the analysis of the data revealed a linear dependence between the logarithm of concentration (log C) and the logarithm of SERS signal intensity (log I) in the range of 10-7-10-4 M with a correlation coefficient (R 2) of 0.994. This research helps us understand better the SERS mechanism and the application of Raman spectroscopy on a bimetallic surface.

Project description:The detection of circulating biomarkers in liquid biopsies has the potential to provide a non-invasive route for earlier cancer diagnosis and treatment management. Melanoma chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan (MCSP) is a membrane protein characteristic for melanoma cell migration and tissue invasion with its soluble form (sMCSP) serving as a potential promising diagnostic surrogate. However, at the initial disease stage, the detection of sMCSP is challenging because of its low abundance and the required high specificity to analyze sMCSP in complex bodily fluids. Herein, we report a highly sensitive and high-throughput microchip that enables Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) immunoassay for parallel detection of up to 28 samples. Key to assay speed and sensitivity is the stimulation of an alternating current-induced nanofluidic mixing that improves target-sensor collision and displacement of non-specific molecules. Anisotropic Au-Ag alloy nanoboxes (NB's) with strong plasmonic hot spots provide single SERS particle sensitivity that enables ultrasensitive sMCSP detection of as low as 0.79 pM (200 pg ml-1). As a proof of concept study, we investigate the assay performance in simulated melanoma patient samples.

Project description:DNA origami nanostructures are a versatile tool to arrange metal nanostructures and other chemical entities with nanometer precision. In this way gold nanoparticle dimers with defined distance can be constructed, which can be exploited as novel substrates for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). We have optimized the size, composition and arrangement of Au/Ag nanoparticles to create intense SERS hot spots, with Raman enhancement up to 10(10), which is sufficient to detect single molecules by Raman scattering. This is demonstrated using single dye molecules (TAMRA and Cy3) placed into the center of the nanoparticle dimers. In conjunction with the DNA origami nanostructures novel SERS substrates are created, which can in the future be applied to the SERS analysis of more complex biomolecular targets, whose position and conformation within the SERS hot spot can be precisely controlled.

Project description:Nanoparticle multilayer substrates usually exhibit excellent SERS activity due to multi-dimensional plasmon coupling. However, simply increasing the layers will lead to several problems, such as complex manufacturing procedures, reduced uniformity and poor reproducibility. In this paper, the local electric field (LEF) characteristics of a Ag nanoparticle (AgNP) multilayer were systematically studied through finite element simulations. We found that, on the glass support, the LEF intensity improved with the increase in the layers of AgNPs. However, the maximum LEF could be obtained with only two layers of AgNPs on the Au film support, and it was much stronger than the optimal value of the former. To verify the simulation results, we have successfully prepared one to four layers of AgNPs on both supports with a liquid-liquid interface self-assembly method, and carried out a series of SERS measurements. The experimental results were in good agreement with the simulations. Finally, the optimized SERS substrate, the 2-AgNP@Au film, showed an ultra-high SERS sensitivity, along with an excellent signal uniformity, which had a detection ability of 1 × 10-15 M for the Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 11% for the signal intensity. Our study provides important theoretical guidance and a technical basis for the optimized design and application of high-performance SERS substrates.

Project description:Quasi-fractal gold nanoparticles can be synthesized via a modified and temperature controlled procedure initially used for the synthesis of star-like gold nanoparticles. The surface features of nanoparticles lead to improved enhancement of Raman scattering intensity of analyte molecules due to the increased number of sharp surface features possessing numerous localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR). The LSPR is affected by the size and shape of surface features as well as inter-nanoparticle interactions, as these affect the oscillation modes of electrons on the nanoparticle surfaces. The effect of the particle morphologies on the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and on the surface-enhancing capabilities of these nanoparticles is explored by comparing different nanoparticle morphologies and concentrations. We show that in a fixed nanoparticle concentration regime, quasi-fractal gold nanoparticles (gold nanocaltrop) provide the highest level of surface enhancement, whereas spherical nanoparticles provide the largest enhancement in a fixed gold concentration regime. The presence of highly branched features enables these nanoparticles to couple with a laser wavelength, despite having no strong absorption band and hence no single surface plasmon resonance. This cumulative LSPR may allow these nanoparticles to be used in a variety of applications in which laser wavelength flexibility is beneficial, such as in medical imaging applications where fluorescence at short laser wavelengths may be coupled with non-fluorescing long laser wavelengths for molecular sensing.

Project description:The nanosphere lithography (NSL) method can be developed to deposit the Au-Ag triangle hexagonal nanoparticle arrays for the generation of localized surface plasmon resonance. Previously, we have found that the parameters used to form the NSL masks and the physical methods required to deposit the Au-Ag thin films had large effects on the geometry properties of the nanoparticle arrays. Considering this, the different parameters used to grow the Au-Ag triangle hexagonal nanoparticle arrays were investigated. A single-layer NSL mask was formed by using self-assembly nano-scale polystyrene (PS) nanospheres with an average radius of 265 nm. At first, the concentration of the nano-scale PS nanospheres in the solution was set at 6 wt %. Two coating methods, drop-coating and spin-coating, were used to coat the nano-scale PS nanospheres as a single-layer NSL mask. From the observations of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), we found that the matrixes of the PS nanosphere masks fabricated by using the drop-coating method were more uniform and exhibited a smaller gap than those fabricated by the spin-coating method. Next, the drop-coating method was used to form the single-layer NSL mask and the concentration of nano-scale PS nanospheres in a solution that was changed from 4 to 10 wt %, for further study. The SEM images showed that when the concentrations of PS nanospheres in the solution were 6 and 8 wt %, the matrixes of the PS nanosphere masks were more uniform than those of 4 and 10 wt %. The effects of the one-side lifting angle of substrates and the vaporization temperature for the solvent of one-layer self-assembly PS nanosphere thin films, were also investigated. Finally, the concentration of the nano-scale PS nanospheres in the solution was set at 8 wt % to form the PS nanosphere masks by the drop-coating method. Three different physical deposition methods, including thermal evaporation, radio-frequency magnetron sputtering, and e-gun deposition, were used to deposit the Au-Ag triangle hexagonal periodic nanoparticle arrays. The SEM images showed that as the single-layer PS nanosphere mask was well controlled, the thermal evaporation could deposit the Au-Ag triangle hexagonal nanoparticle arrays with a higher quality than the other two methods.
