Edge effects on tree architecture exacerbate biomass loss of fragmented Amazonian forests.

ABSTRACT: Habitat fragmentation could potentially affect tree architecture and allometry. Here, we use ground surveys of terrestrial LiDAR in Central Amazonia to explore the influence of forest edge effects on tree architecture and allometry, as well as forest biomass, 40 years after fragmentation. We find that young trees colonising the forest fragments have thicker branches and architectural traits that optimise for light capture, which result in 50% more woody volume than their counterparts of similar stem size and height in the forest interior. However, we observe a disproportionately lower height in some large trees, leading to a 30% decline in their woody volume. Despite the substantial wood production of colonising trees, the lower height of some large trees has resulted in a net loss of 6.0 Mg ha^-1 of aboveground biomass - representing 2.3% of the aboveground biomass of edge forests. Our findings indicate a strong influence of edge effects on tree architecture and allometry, and uncover an overlooked factor that likely exacerbates carbon losses in fragmented forests.

Project description:The relationship between tree height and diameter varies across forest types, introducing uncertainties in height that can affect aboveground biomass estimates in tropical forests. Here, we used a four-step approach to assess whether incorporating height estimates from local height-diameter models, compared to two published equations, improves biomass estimates across spatial scales. First, we measured the diameter and height of 1,962 trees in two representative forest types in the Northeastern Amazon: non-flooded terra-firme and seasonally-flooded várzea forests. Second, we selected the best height-diameter models from a set of 10 candidates to establish local allometric equations. Third, we applied these best local models and two previously published height models (the regional Guyana shield, and the pantropical model) to estimate tree height, and compared these estimates to measured height. Finally, we computed tree biomass using equations that both included and excluded height, and compared these biomass estimates to those calculated using directly measured height. Asymptotic height-diameter models provided the best fit at local and regional scales. The Quadratic model was the best choice for terra-firme and várzea forests separately, while the Weibull and Michaelis-Menten models performed best for both forests. Local models closely matched measured heights, with deviations of only 0.1%, outperforming the regional and pantropical models within each forest type. The regional model underestimated height in terra-firme by 3% and overestimated it in várzea by 29%, while the pantropical model underestimated height in terra-firme by 19% and overestimated it in várzea by 6%. Using local asymptotic models to estimate height improved the accuracy of biomass estimates, with differences of around 1% between biomass computed using measured heights and estimated heights for terra-firme and várzea forests. In contrast, the biomass calculated using estimated heights from both the regional and pantropical models overestimated the biomass in várzea by 41% and 17%, respectively, while the pantropical model underestimated biomass in terra-firme by 17%. The estimated height and biomass of large trees using regional and pantropical models showed the highest deviations from the observed values. Our findings underscore the necessity for height-diameter modeling for different forest types, and highlight the need to increase sampling of large trees to improve biomass estimation accuracy in Northeastern Amazonia.

Project description:Current biodiversity loss is mostly caused by anthropogenic habitat loss and fragmentation, climate change, and resource exploitation. Measuring the balance of species loss and gain in remaining fragmented landscapes throughout time entails a central research challenge. We resurveyed in 2013 plant species richness in the same plots of a previous sampling conducted in 2003 across 18 forest fragments of different sizes of the Chaco Serrano forest in Argentina. While the area of these forest remnants was kept constant, their surrounding forest cover changed over this time period. We compared plant species richness of both sampling years and calculated the proportion of species loss and gain at forest edges and interiors. As in 2003, we found a positive relationship between fragment area and plant richness in 2013 and both years showed a similar slope. However, we detected a net decrease of 24% of species' richness across all forest fragments, implying an unprecedentedly high rate and magnitude of species loss driven mainly by non-woody, short-lived species. There was a higher proportion of lost and gained species at forest edges than in forest interiors. Importantly, fragment area interacted with percent change in surrounding forest cover to explain the proportion of species lost. Small forest fragments showed a relatively constant proportion of species loss regardless of any changes in surrounding forest cover, whereas in larger fragments the proportion of species lost increased when surrounding forest cover decreased. We show that despite preserving fragment area, habitat quality and availability in the surroundings is of fundamental importance in shaping extinction and immigration dynamics of plant species at any given forest remnant. Because the Chaco Serrano forest has already lost 94% of its original cover, we argue that plant extinctions will continue through the coming decades unless active management actions are taken to increase native forest areas.
