Project description:BackgroundHigh BMI (Body Mass Index) is a significant factor impacting health, with a clear link to an increased risk of leukemia. Research on this topic is limited. Understanding the epidemiological trends of leukemia attributable to high BMI risk is crucial for disease prevention and patient support.MethodsWe obtained the data from the Global Burden of Disease Study, analyzing the ASR (age-standardized rates), including ASDR (age-standardized death rate) and age-standardized disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rate, and estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) by gender, age, country, and region from 1990 to 2019.ResultsIn 2019, deaths and DALYs have significantly increased to 21.73 thousand and 584.09 thousand. The global age-standardized death and DALYs rates have slightly increased over the past 30 years (EAPCs: 0.34 and 0.29). Among four common leukemia subtypes, only CML (Chronic Myeloid Leukemia) exhibited a significant decrease in ASDR and age-standardized DALYs rate, with EAPC of -1.74 and -1.52. AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) showed the most pronounced upward trend in ASDR, with an EAPC of 1.34. These trends vary by gender, age, region, and national economic status. Older people have been at a significantly greater risk. Females globally have borne a higher burden. While males have shown an increasing trend. The regions experiencing the greatest growth in ASR were South Asia. The countries with the largest increases were Equatorial Guinea. However, It is worth noting that there may be variations among specific subtypes of leukemia. Regions with high Socio-demographic Index (SDI) have had the highest ASR, while low-middle SDI regions have shown the greatest increase in these rates. All ASRs values have been positively correlated with SDI, but there has been a turning point in medium to high SDI regions.ConclusionsLeukemia attributable to high BMI risk is gradually becoming a heavier burden globally. Different subtypes of leukemia have distinct temporal and regional patterns. This study's findings will provide information for analyzing the worldwide disease burden patterns and serve as a basis for disease prevention, developing suitable strategies for the modifiable risk factor.

Project description:Hematologic malignancies are among the most common cancers, and understanding their incidence and death is crucial for targeting prevention, clinical practice improvement, and research resources appropriately. Here, we investigated detailed information on hematological malignancies for the period 1990-2019 from the Global Burden of Disease study. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), the age-standardized death rate (ASDR), and the corresponding estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC) were calculated to assess temporal trends in 204 countries and territories over the past 30 years. Globally, incident cases of hematologic malignancies have been increasing since 1990, reaching 1343.85 thousand in 2019, but the ASDR for all types of hematologic malignancies has been declining. The ASDR for leukemia, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and Hodgkin lymphoma were 4.26, 1.42, 3.19, and 0.34 per 100,000 population in 2019, respectively, with Hodgkin lymphoma showing the most significant decline. However, the trend varies by gender, age, region, and the country's economic situation. The burden of hematologic malignancies is generally higher in men, and this gender gap decreases after peaking at a given age. The regions with the largest increasing trend in the ASIR of leukemia, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and Hodgkin lymphoma were Central Europe, Eastern Europe, East Asia, and Caribbean, respectively. In addition, the proportion of deaths attributed to high body-mass index continued to rise across regions, especially in regions with high socio-demographic indices (SDI). Meanwhile, the burden of leukemia from occupational exposure to benzene and formaldehyde was more widespread in areas with low SDI. Thus, hematologic malignancies remain the leading cause of the global tumor burden, with growing absolute numbers but sharp among several age-standardized measures over the past three decades. The results of the study will inform analysis of trends in the global burden of disease for specific hematologic malignancies and develop appropriate policies for these modifiable risks.

Project description:BackgroundCataracts now account for the largest proportion of the global burden of blindness and vision loss. Understanding the changing trends in the global burden of cataracts over the past 30 years and the next 15 years is of clear significance for the prevention and control of cataracts in key populations. As far as we know, research on the future burden of cataracts is lacking.ObjectiveThis study aims to assess the global burden of cataracts over the past 30 years by using age-period-cohort modeling and to estimate trends in the next 15 years.MethodsData were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, the United Nations Development Programme, and the WHO (World Health Organization) Global Health Observatory data repository. The assessment of trends and disparities in the number and rate of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for cataracts from 1990 to 2019 was conducted. The association between the age-standardized DALY rate (ASDR) and the socio-demographic index (SDI), human development index (HDI), national levels of particulate matter <2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5), and ambient ultraviolet radiation (UVR) was determined using linear regression analysis. Additionally, we used the Nordpred (Harald Fekjær and Bjørn Møller) age-period-cohort model to predict the cataract burden from 2020 to 2034.ResultsGlobally, the number of DALYs due to cataract increased from 3,492,604 (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 2,481,846-4,719,629) in 1990 to 6,676,281 (95% UI 4,761,210-9,006,193) in 2019. The ASDRs due to cataract decreased from 93.17 (95% UI 66.14-125.32) in 1990 to 82.94 (95% UI 59.06-111.75) in 2019, with an average annual percentage change of -0.37 (95% CI -0.44 to -0.3; P<.001). Age, female sex, air pollution, smoking, high fasting plasma glucose levels, and a high body mass index were risk factors for the burden of cataracts. SDI and HDI were negatively correlated with ASDRs of cataracts, while PM2.5 and UVR were positively associated with them. Higher DALY rates were also associated with lower SDI (R2=0.1939; P<.001), lower HDI (R2=0.2828; P<.001), national PM2.5 concentration (R2=0.1874; P<.001), and ambient UVR levels (R2=0.2354; P<.001). The prediction model suggested that the number of DALYs due to cataract will continue to rise globally, while the cataract DALY rate will continue to decrease.ConclusionsWhile the ASDR of cataracts has decreased, there has been a notable increase in the number of DALYs over the past 30 years. Projections suggest that the global burden of cataracts will continue to rise over the next 15 years. To address this challenge, appropriate prevention and treatment policies must be implemented.

Project description:ObjectivesPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) represents a significant and persistent metabolic disorder, emerging as a leading factor contributing to infertility. Despite its profound impact, there remains an inadequate understanding of the global burden of PCOS-related infertility across diverse regions and countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the global, regional, and national burden of PCOS-related infertility from 1990 to 2019.MethodsThe data utilized in this study were derived from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. The global burden of PCOS-related infertility was collected and subsequently categorized based on age and sociodemographic index (SDI) spanning the period from 1990 to 2019. Temporal trends in PCOS-related infertility over the past three decades were scrutinized employing joinpoint regression analysis, enabling the determination of annual percentage change (APC) and average annual percentage changes (AAPCs). The association between the age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), age-standardized YLD rate (ASYR), and the AAPCs in ASPR and ASYR and the SDI was performed using linear regression analysis. Additionally, the Slope Index of Inequality (SII) and the Relative Concentration Index were employed to assess the inequalities in the distribution of infertility burdens related to PCOS.ResultsGlobally, the number of prevalent cases and YLDs due to PCOS-related infertility increased from 5,997,589 (95% UI: 3,772,636-8,764,813), and 35,201 (95% UI: 13,282 - 80,010) in 1990 to 12,131,849 (95% UI: 7,625,027 - 17,945,905), and 69,694 (95% UI: 26,756 - 160,420) in 2019, respectively. The age-standardized rates of prevalence and YLDs consistently increased over the same period, with respective AAPCs of 2.45 (95% CI: 2.4-2.5) and 2.37 (95% CI: 2.32-2.43), respectively. The number of prevalent cases and rate of PCOS peaked in the 25-29 years. Populations with high SDI had the highest ASPRs and ASYRs of PCOS-related infertility, while populations with low SDI exhibited more pronounced upward trends. Additionally, linear regression analysis revealed that ASPRs and ASYRs were positively correlated with SDI (R = 0.419 and 0.433, respectively, all P < 0.0001), and the AAPCs in ASPRs and ASYRs were negatively correlated with SDI (R= - 0.570 and - 0.571, respectively, all P < 0.0001). The SII for prevalent cases and YLDs were 121.94 (95% CI: 94.66-149.23) and 0.75 (95% CI: 0.55-0.85) to 146.56 (95% CI: 110.27-182.86) and 0.91 (95% CI: 0.71-1.03), respectively.ConclusionThe prevalent cases and YLDs, along with the ASPRs and ASYRs attributable to PCOS-related infertility, exhibited a consistent upward trajectory over the past 30 years. This escalation was closely associated with factors such as age, socioeconomic status, and geographic location. It is crucial to bolster healthcare management, devise timely and efficacious prevention and control strategies, and provide epidemiological theoretical evidence to alleviate the burden of PCOS-related infertility.

Project description:In academia, manuscripts serve as an important component of career development. The past several years have seen heightened evaluation of the role of the gender gap in career advancement, as well as other bibliometric changes in publications. We therefore analyzed authorship and publication trends in the Annals of Biomedical Engineering over the past three decades (one complete year of manuscripts for each decade; 1986, 1996, 2006, and 2016). The variables analyzed were number of authors per manuscript, numerical position of the corresponding author, number of collaborating institutions and countries, number of references, and number of citations per manuscript. The gender of both the first and corresponding authors was identified and analyzed over time and by region. Globally, the percentage of female first and corresponding authors significantly increased from 0% in 1986 to 28.6% (p = 0.003) and 20.4% (p = 0.0009), respectively, in 2016. Although there were significant differences regarding female first and corresponding author over time, they did not vary by region of origin (p = 0.5 and 0.2, respectively). Overall, these findings highlight the improvements made and the challenges that still exist related to publishing within the bioengineering field.

Project description:Objective: We retrospectively studied cancer mortality and incidence in China from 1990 to 2019, investigated the cancer trends and risk factors, and analyzed the effects of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on cancer mortality and incidence. Methods: Data was obtained in "Our world in data" in October 2022 to explore mortality rates of different cancers and their trends and the roles of cancer risk factors, including GDP, air pollution, etc. Results: Over the past 30 years, cancer had been China's second leading cause of death. Tracheal, bronchial, and lung cancers, with an annual growth rate of 6.5%, were the most frequently diagnosed cancers. The burden of different cancers changed as the mortality rate of cancer changed. The age-standardized cancer mortality rate had decreased by 19.0%; cancer deaths in all age groups had increased. While the number of cancer deaths in the elderly aged ≥70 did not increase distinctively, its percentage increased by 52.1% and 1.7% annually. The percentage of patients with new-onset cancer increased by 240% and 8.6% annually. For every USD 1,000 increase in GDP, cancer deaths decreased by 2.3/100,000. Tobacco, meat, and alcohol consumption and BMI had increased and were not conducive to the future control of cancer. Conclusions: We summarized the incidence and mortality of major cancers and their trends in China over the past 30 years and analyzed the effects of GDP and the roles of cancer risk factors. Overall GDP growth and effective control of air pollution reduced cancer mortality, while population aging, smoking, alcohol consumption, BMI increasing, and meat consumption brought challenges for cancer control.

Project description:In recent years, many studies have focused on the host immune system and its relationship with tumor progression in a variety of solid tumors, including breast cancer. This study investigates recent trends of immunotherapy research in breast cancer and compares the contributions of research from different regions, institutions, and authors. A search of breast cancer and immunotherapy studies that were published between 2010 and 2019-with different keyword combinations-was performed in the Web of Science database. Bibliometric data were collected for analysis. VOSviewer software was used to generate a figure for the keyword's co-occurrence network, so as to implement network visualization analysis. A total of 1,041 publications were identified. The United States and China contributed to approximately 50% of the publications, 336 and 208, respectively. Both countries drove the increase in publications after 2015. A paper entitled "Pembrolizumab in patients with advanced triple-negative breast cancer: Phase IB KEYNOTE-012 Study" that was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology by Nanda et al. was the most cited (715 citations). The keywords found in this research were grouped into four clusters: "mechanism," "vaccination," "PD-L1," and "chemotherapy." The terms "tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes" and "PD-1/PD-L1" are among the latest hotspots, which mostly appeared in 2017. Author keyword analysis revealed that recent trends in breast cancer immunotherapy focus on the triple-negative breast cancer subtype and PD-1/PD-L1 immune checkpoint pathway and inhibitors. This study analyzed global trends in immunotherapy research on breast cancer over the past 10 years and provided insight into the features and research hotspots of the articles in this issue.

Project description:Poliomyelitis is an acute infectious disease caused by poliovirus. This bibliometric analysis aims to examine the status of poliomyelitis research in the past 20 years. Information regarding polio research was obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection database. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Excel were used to perform visual and bibliometric analysis with respect to countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals and keywords. A total of 5,335 publications on poliomyelitis were published from 2002 to 2021. The USA was the county with the majority of publications. Additionally, the most productive institution was the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sutter, RW produced the most papers and had the most co-citations. Vaccine was the journal with the most polio-related publications and citations. The most common keywords were mainly about polio immunology research ("polio," "immunization," "children," "eradication" and "vaccine"). Our study is helpful for identifying research hotspots and providing direction for future research on poliomyelitis.

Project description:Background: Exosomes and cancer immunology are both important areas of research for cancer treatment. As much effort has been made to explore the relationship between exosomes and cancer immunology, exosomes in cancer immunology have become a hotspot in medical research. Methods: We retrieved all relevant publications between 2011 and 2021 from the Web of Science and utilized Microsoft Excel 365, Citespace, Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology (http://bibliometric.com/) and software including VOS viewer to analyze and visualize the research result. Results: Of the 820 studies included, China published the most articles, followed by the USA. Cooperation between countries has progressed over the past decade. Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Oncotargets and Therapy were the institution and journal that published the most articles respectively. The most frequently cited article in this field, titled "Pancreatic cancer exosomes initiate pre-metastatic niche formation in the liver," was published in Nature Cell Biology. Keywords were divided into three: Mechanism research, treatment application research, and diagnosis and prognosis research of which the latter was the newest cluster. "Microenvironment," "PD-L1" and "M2 macrophage" were representative new keywords while "tumor suppressor" was the keyword cited most frequently. Conclusion: The publication trend shows that cooperation between different countries and institutions contributes to the development of this field. Researchers should continue to extend collaborations for further advances. The rising relative research interest indicated that this is a hot topic with great research potential. Macrophages polarization and PD-L1 application in tumor immunotherapy are worthy of further research. Hotspots will likely transfer from mechanistic research to clinical research, particularly for methods to increase the survival rate and improve the prognosis of cancer patients.

Project description:Tuberculous pleurisy (TP) is a common type of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB). With the development of research and changes in TP patient characteristics, an increasing number of studies have revealed the prevalence, risk factors, and novel diagnosis techniques. Thus, this bibliometric analysis was performed to identify global scientific output characteristics and research hotspots and frontiers for TP over the past 15 years. We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-expanded) for literature published between 2007 and 2021 and recorded their information. The Bibliometrix software package was used for bibliometric indicator analysis, and VOSviewer was used to visualize the trends of and hotspots in TP research. A total of 1,464 original articles were reviewed, and the results indicated that the annual number of publications (Np) focusing on TP has increased over the past 15 years. China had the largest number of papers and the highest H-index, and the United States ranked first for number of citations (Nc). EGYPTIAN KNOWLEDGE BANK and PLOS ONE were the most prolific unit and journal, respectively. The use of the Xpert assay and immune-related biomarker detection to diagnose TP appears to be a recent research hotspot. This bibliometric study demonstrated that the number of publications related to TP have tended to increase. China is a major producer, and the United States is an influential country in this field. Research in the past 15 years has been predominantly clinical research. The diagnosis of TP was the focus of research, and the exploration of novel diagnostic techniques, verification of diagnostic markers, and combination of diagnostic methods have been recent research hotspots. Immune-related biomarkers should be given more attention in the field of TP diagnosis.
