Synthesis and Characterization of Two Novel Naphthalenediimide/Zinc Phosphonate Crystalline Materials Precipitated from Different Solvents.

ABSTRACT: Hybrid naphthalenediimide/zinc phosphonate materials (NDI/Zn) were prepared by mixing solutions of N,N'-bis(2-phosphonoethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide (PNDI) and zinc nitrate, resulting in the precipitation of the desired compounds. Samples precipitated from water and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were produced. The obtained samples had the expected elemental composition, and the presence of naphthalenediimides (NDI) was ascertained by infrared and UV-visible spectroscopy. All the samples were crystalline, according to powder X-ray diffraction. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms showed the presence of porosity in the NDI/Zn samples. Mesopores with a diameter = 4.1 nm were present in the sample from DMF, with total pore volume reaching 0.13 cm³/g.

Synthesis of 2D Porous Crystalline Materials in Simulated Microgravity.

Project description:To date, crystallization studies conducted in space laboratories, which are prohibitively costly and unsuitable to most research laboratories, have shown the valuable effects of microgravity during crystal growth and morphogenesis. Herein, an easy and highly efficient method is shown to achieve space-like experimentation conditions on Earth employing custom-made microfluidic devices to fabricate 2D porous crystalline molecular frameworks. It is confirmed that experimentation under these simulated microgravity conditions has unprecedented effects on the orientation, compactness and crack-free generation of 2D porous crystalline molecular frameworks as well as in their integration and crystal morphogenesis. It is believed that this work will provide a new "playground" to chemists, physicists, and materials scientists that desire to process unprecedented 2D functional materials and devices.

A general large-scale synthesis approach for crystalline porous materials.

Project description:Crystalline porous materials such as covalent organic frameworks (COFs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous organic cages (POCs) have been widely applied in various fields with outstanding performances. However, the lack of general and effective methodology for large-scale production limits their further industrial applications. In this work, we developed a general approach comprising high pressure homogenization (HPH), which can realize large-scale synthesis of crystalline porous materials including COFs, MOFs, and POCs under benign conditions. This universal strategy, as illustrated in the proof of principle studies, has prepared 4 COFs, 4 MOFs, and 2 POCs. It can circumvent some drawbacks of existing approaches including low yield, high energy consumption, low efficiency, weak mass/thermal transfer, tedious procedures, poor reproducibility, and high cost. On the basis of this approach, an industrial homogenizer can produce 0.96 ~ 580.48 ton of high-performance COFs, MOFs, and POCs per day, which is unachievable via other methods.

Project description:The syntheses of hydroxymethylenebisphosphonic acid derivatives (dronic acid derivatives) starting from the corresponding substituted acetic acids and P-reagents, mainly phosphorus trichloride and phosphorous acid are surveyed according to the solvents applied. The nature of the solvent is a critical point due to the heterogeneity of the reaction mixtures. This review sheds light on the optimum choice and ratio of the P-reactants, and on the optimum conditions.

Detection of Dimethyl Methyl Phosphonate by Silica Molecularly Imprinted Materials.

Project description:In recent years, the increasing severity of chemical warfare agent threats to public safety has led to a growing demand for gas sensors capable of detecting these compounds. However, gas sensors used for the detection of chemical warfare agents must overcome limitations in sensitivity, selectivity, and reaction speed. This paper presents a sensitive material and a surface acoustic gas sensor for detecting dimethyl methyl phosphonate. The results demonstrate that the sensor exhibits good selectivity and could detect 80 ppb of dimethyl methyl phosphonate within 1 min. As an integral component of the sensor, the microstructure and adsorption mechanism of silica molecular imprinting material were studied in detail. The results show that the template molecule could significantly affect the pore volume, specific surface area, and hydroxyl density of mesoporous materials. These properties further affect the performance of the sensor. This study provides a valuable case study for the design of sensitive materials.

Computational materials design of crystalline solids.

Project description:The modelling of materials properties and processes from first principles is becoming sufficiently accurate as to facilitate the design and testing of new systems in silico. Computational materials science is both valuable and increasingly necessary for developing novel functional materials and composites that meet the requirements of next-generation technology. A range of simulation techniques are being developed and applied to problems related to materials for energy generation, storage and conversion including solar cells, nuclear reactors, batteries, fuel cells, and catalytic systems. Such techniques may combine crystal-structure prediction (global optimisation), data mining (materials informatics) and high-throughput screening with elements of machine learning. We explore the development process associated with computational materials design, from setting the requirements and descriptors to the development and testing of new materials. As a case study, we critically review progress in the fields of thermoelectrics and photovoltaics, including the simulation of lattice thermal conductivity and the search for Pb-free hybrid halide perovskites. Finally, a number of universal chemical-design principles are advanced.

Mesogenic Polyelectrolyte Gels Absorb Organic Solvents and Liquid Crystalline Molecules.

Project description:In this paper, mesogenic polyelectrolyte gels (MPEgels) tethering mesogenic groups on the side chains were synthesized from a mesogenic monomer and ionic monomer via a conventional radical polymerization process. The obtained MPEgels absorbed various organic solvents in a wide range of dielectric constants from chloroform (ε = 7.6) to DMSO (ε = 46.5). The electrostatic repulsion among the polymer chains and the osmotic pressure between the interior and exterior of the MPEgel is responsible for the high swelling ability, revealed by the common ion effect using tetra(n-hexyl)ammonium tetra(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylborate (THATFPB). The obtained MPEgels could also absorb liquid crystalline molecules such as 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB), analogously caused by the above-mentioned polyelectrolyte characteristic. The MPEgels exhibited liquid crystal transition temperature (TNI) on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement, and the increase of the ionic group content lowered TNI. The MPEgels absorbing liquid crystalline molecules exhibited differing TNI, dependent on the compatibility of the mesogenic group on the side chain to the liquid crystalline molecule.

Umbelliferyloxymethyl phosphonate compounds-weakly binding zinc ionophores with neuroprotective properties.

Project description:Umbelliferone is a member of the coumarin family of compounds which are known for diverse pharmacological activity including in targets relevant to Alzheimers disease, AD. The toxicity associated with some forms of the amyloid protein, Aβ, and the role of Zn2+ (and other biometals) dyshomeostasis in this, are of great interest in AD and make metal ionophore capability desirable in so called multi target drug ligands MTDLs. A new series of umbelliferyloxymethyl phosphonic acid diethylester compounds (umbelliferyloxymethyl phosphonates) bearing a phosphonate at the 7-position (compounds 1, 3-6), hydrolysis products 2, 2a and 2b from 1 and analogues 7 and 8 of 1 with 7-O to 7-S and 1-O to 1-NH substitutions, are reported. Single crystal X-ray structures of compounds 1, 2 and 2a were determined. In terms of neuroprotective properties, the compounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 at 1 μM concentration, inhibited the toxicity of Aβ1-42 (Aβ42) in both toxic Amyloid Derived Diffusible Ligand (ADDL) and fibrillar (fibril) forms towards rat hippocampal cells. Compound 7 displayed cytotoxicity and 8 failed to inhibit Aβ42 toxicity. Concerning compound-metal ionophore activity (assessed using chemical experiments), despite weak binding to Zn2+ determined from 31P NMR titration of 1 and 2 by ZnCl2, compounds 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 demonstrated ionophore assisted partition of Zn2+ from water to octanol at micromolar concentrations with efficacy on a par with or better than the chelator MTDL clioquinol (5-chloro-7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline). Partition was assessed using furnace Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). In further experiments interaction of compound 1 with Zn2+ or it's pathways was inferred by (i) delayed fluorescence response with added Zn2+ in cells treated with FluoZin-3 and (ii) by suppression of Zn2+ promoted aggregation of Aβ42.

The RNA of these samples was extracted, and transcriptome sequencing analysis was carried out to explore the transcriptional profile differences between hybrids and their parents, and to analyze the gene differential expression between different tissues.

Reverse Microemulsion-Based Synthesis of (Bis)phosphonate-Metal Materials with Controllable Physical Properties: An Example Using Zoledronic Acid-Calcium Complexes.

Project description:The development of phosphonate-metal materials is tightly related to the advancement in their synthesis methods. Herein, using zoledronic acid (Zol), a bisphosphonate (bioacitve phosphonate with a "P-C-P" structure), and calcium as model molecules, we applied the reverse microemulsion (RM) method to synthesize a series of Zol-Ca complexes. We comprehensively (i) studied the relationship between RM conditions, including the component ratio of RM, cosurfactants, reaction time, reactant concentration, reaction temperature, and the presence of a phospholipid, 1, 2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphate acid (DOPA), and the physical properties of the complexes synthesized (i.e., shape, size, uniformity, monodispersity, and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity) and (ii) explored the underlying mechanisms. To evaluate the biomedical application potential of the Zol-Ca complexes synthesized, one type of hydrophobic, DOPA-coated spherical Zol-Ca complexes (denoted as Zol-Ca@DOPA) was formulated into a PEGylated lipid-based nanoparticle formulation (i.e., Zol-Ca@bilipid NPs, ∼24 nm in diameter). In a mouse model with orthotopic mammary tumors, the Zol-Ca@bilipid NPs significantly enhanced the distribution of Zol in tumors, as compared to free Zol. It is expected that the RM-based synthesis of (bis)phosphonate-metal materials with controllable physical properties will help expand their applications.
