Enhanced Preservation of Climacteric Fruit with a Cellulose Nanofiber-Based Film Coating.

ABSTRACT: Bananas are a typical climacteric fruit with high respiration and ethylene production rates after harvest, and they show rapid ripening-senescence phenotypes. Here, we demonstrate that carboxymethylcellulose nanofibers (CM-CNFs) and red cabbage extracts (RCE) can be used as a unique film coating formulation for enhancement of the shelf-life of fruit. A CM-CNF suspension solution is created through a process involving chemical modification, followed by mechanical grinding. It has a high aspect ratio that allows for the creation of a thin and transparent film on the surface of bananas. The cross-linked CM-CNF hydrogel forms a dense film layer on the banana surface during dehydration and prevents respiration and weight loss. RCE contains polyphenols acting as antioxidants, which prevent the appearance of black dots on the banana peels. It serves to mitigate the browning of banana skins and also hinders the respiration process, consequently slowing the aging of bananas.

Cellulose-Based Transparent Edible Antibacterial Oxygen-Barrier Coating for Long-Term Fruit Preservation.

Project description:Long-term preservation of fresh fruit and vegetables without a cold chain is a great challenge to food security because fruits and vegetables are highly vulnerable to poor storage conditions. Fruit spoilage is a complex biochemical process that involves many factors, including microbial reproduction, oxidation, metabolism, and H2O evaporation. Only the synergy of the multiple spoilage inhibition methods can achieve long-term freshness preservation. Herein, a multifunctional cellulose-based preservation coating with antibacterial, oxygen/water vapor barrier, and antioxidant properties is proposed, which is based on cellulose microgel (CMG) and prepared using multi-component composites with montmorillonite (MMT), cationic cellulose derivative (Cell-P+), and L-ascorbic acid (Vc). It has good wetting properties on fruits with different surfaces. This method can successfully preserve the long-term freshness of various fruits. This highly transparent, edible, and washable multifunctional cellulose-based fruit preservation coating can improve the quality of agricultural products, extend the shelf life of food, and reduce the cost of cold-chain transportation.

All-Cellulose Nanofiber-Based Sustainable Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Enhanced Energy Harvesting.

Project description:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) show promising potential in energy harvesting and sensing for various electronic devices in multiple fields. However, the majority of materials currently utilized in TENGs are unrenewable, undegradable, and necessitate complex preparation processes, resulting in restricted performance and durability for practical applications. Here, we propose a strategy that combines straightforward chemical modification and electrospinning techniques to construct all-cellulose nanofiber-based TENGs with substantial power output. By using cellulose acetate (CA) as the raw material, the prepared cellulose membranes (CMs) and fluorinated cellulose membranes (FCMs) with different functional groups and hydrophobic properties are applied as the tribopositive and tribonegative friction layers of FCM/CM-based triboelectric nanogenerators (FC-TENGs), respectively. This approach modulates the microstructure and triboelectric polarity of the friction materials in FC-TENGs, thus enhancing their triboelectric charge densities and contact areas. As a result, the assembled FC-TENGs demonstrate enhanced output performance (94 V, 8.5 µA, and 0.15 W/m2) and exceptional durability in 15,000 cycles. The prepared FC-TENGs with efficient energy harvesting capabilities can be implemented in practical applications to power various electronic devices. Our work strengthens the viability of cellulose-based TENGs for sustainable development and provides novel perspectives on the cost-effective and valuable utilization of cellulose in the future.

Antifungal features and properties of chitosan/sandalwood oil Pickering emulsion coating stabilized by appropriate cellulose nanofiber dosage for fresh fruit application.

Project description:A novel composite edible coating film was developed from 0.8% chitosan (CS) and 0.5% sandalwood oil (SEO). Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were used as a stabilizer agent of oil-in-water Pickering emulsion. We found four typical groups of CNF level-dependent emulsion stabilization, including (1) unstable emulsion in the absence of CNFs; (2) unstable emulsion (0.006-0.21% CNFs); (3) stable emulsion (0.24-0.31% CNFs); and (4) regular emulsion with the addition of surfactant. Confocal laser scanning microscopy was performed to reveal the characteristics of droplet diameter and morphology. Antifungal tests against Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium digitatum, between emulsion coating stabilized with CNFs (CS-SEOpick) and CS or CS-SEO was tested. The effective concentration of CNFs (0.24%) may improve the performance of CS coating and maintain CS-SEO antifungal activity synergistically confirmed with a series of assays (in vitro, in vivo, and membrane integrity changes). The incorporation of CNFs contributed to improve the functional properties of CS and SEO-loaded CS including light transmission at UV and visible light wavelengths and tensile strength. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed to characterize the biocompatibility of each coating film formulation. Emulsion-CNF stabilized coating may have potential applications for active coating for fresh fruit commodities.

A non-climacteric fruit gene CaMADS-RIN regulates fruit ripening and ethylene biosynthesis in climacteric fruit.

Project description:MADS-box genes have been reported to play a major role in the molecular circuit of developmental regulation. Especially, SEPALLATA (SEP) group genes play a central role in the developmental regulation of ripening in both climacteric and non-climacteric fruits. However, the mechanisms underlying the regulation of SEP genes to non-climacteric fruits ripening are still unclear. Here a SEP gene of pepper, CaMADS-RIN, has been cloned and exhibited elevated expression at the onset of ripening of pepper. To further explore the function of CaMADS-RIN, an overexpressed construct was created and transformed into ripening inhibitor (rin) mutant tomato plants. Broad ripening phenotypes were observed in CaMADS-RIN overexpressed rin fruits. The accumulation of carotenoid and expression of PDS and ZDS were enhanced in overexpressed fruits compared with rin mutant. The transcripts of cell wall metabolism genes (PG, EXP1 and TBG4) and lipoxygenase genes (TomloxB and TomloxC) accumulated more abundant compared to rin mutant. Besides, both ethylene-dependent genes including ACS2, ACO1, E4 and E8 and ethylene-independent genes such as HDC and Nor were also up-regulated in transgenic fruits at different levels. Moreover, transgenic fruits showed approximately 1-3 times increase in ethylene production compared with rin mutant fruits. Yeast two-hybrid screen results indicated that CaMADS-RIN could interact with TAGL1, FUL1 and itself respectively as SlMADS-RIN did in vitro. These results suggest that CaMADS-RIN affects fruit ripening of tomato both in ethylene-dependent and ethylene-independent aspects, which will provide a set of significant data to explore the role of SEP genes in ripening of non-climacteric fruits.

2D foam film coating of antimicrobial lysozyme amyloid fibrils onto cellulose nanopapers.

Project description:Amyloid fibrils made from inexpensive hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) are bio-based, bio-degradable and bio-compatible colloids with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, making them an attractive alternative to existing small-molecule antibiotics. Their surface activity leads to the formation of 2D foam films within a loop, similar to soap films when blowing bubbles. The stability of the foam was optimized by screening concentration and pH, which also revealed that the HEWL amyloid foams were actually stabilized by unconverted peptides unable to undergo amyloid self-assembly rather than the fibrils themselves. The 2D foam film was successfully deposited on different substrates to produce a homogenous coating layer with a thickness of roughly 30 nm. This was thick enough to shield the negative charge of dry cellulose nanopaper substrates, leading to a positively charged HEWL amyloid coating. The coating exhibited a broad-spectrum antimicrobial effect based on the interactions with the negatively charged cell walls and membranes of clinically relevant pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans). The coating method presented here offers an alternative to existing techniques, such as dip and spray coating, in particular when optimized for continuous production. Based on the facile preparation and broad spectrum antimicrobial performance, we anticipate that these biohybrid materials could potentially be used in the biomedical sector as wound dressings.

The molecular mechanism on suppression of climacteric fruit ripening with postharvest wax coating treatment <i>via</i> transcriptome.

Project description:Wax coating is an important means to maintain fruit quality and extend fruit shelf life, especially for climacteric fruits, such as apples (Malus domestica). Here, we found that wax coating could inhibit ethylene production, chlorophyll degradation, and carotenoid synthesis, but the molecular mechanism remains unclear. The regulatory mechanism of wax coating on apple fruit ripening was determined by subjecting wax-treated apple fruits to transcriptome analysis. RNA-seq revealed that 1,137 and 1,398 genes were upregulated and downregulated, respectively. These differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were shown to be related to plant hormones, such as ethylene, auxin, abscisic acid, and gibberellin, as well as genes involved in chlorophyll degradation and carotenoid biosynthesis. Moreover, we found that some genes related to the wax synthesis process also showed differential expression after the wax coating treatment. Among the DEGs obtained from RNA-seq analysis, 15 were validated by quantitative RT-PCR, confirming the results from RNA-seq analysis. RNA-seq and qRT-PCR of pear (Pyrus ussuriensis) showed similar changes after wax treatment. Our data suggest that wax coating treatment inhibits fruit ripening through ethylene synthesis and signal transduction, chlorophyll metabolism, and carotenoid synthesis pathways and that waxing inhibits endogenous wax production. These results provide new insights into the inhibition of fruit ripening by wax coating.

Facile Post-Carboxymethylation of Cellulose Nanofiber Surfaces for Enhanced Water Dispersibility.

Project description:To improve the water dispersibility of cellulose nanofibers without deteriorating the physical properties, it is necessary to develop methods that can selectively modify fiber surfaces. Herein, the reaction conditions for carboxymethylation of the surface of nanofibrillated bacterial cellulose were optimized using chloroacetic acid as an etherification agent. Carboxymethylation in a high-concentration alkaline solution (>5 wt %) in the presence of isopropanol caused the mercerization and carboxymethylation of not only the nanofiber surface but also the cellulose crystals within the nanofiber, resulting in nanofiber swelling and an increase in fiber width. In contrast, with a dilute alkaline aqueous solution (3 wt %), the nanofiber surface was successfully carboxymethylated without changing the inner structure. Furthermore, the morphology was not affected by the carboxymethylation reaction, and no fiber swelling occurred under these reaction conditions. When the substitution reaction proceeded only on the nanofiber surface, the maximum degree of substitution (i.e., the average number of carboxymethyl groups substituted per anhydroglucose residue in cellulose) was 0.091. After surface modification, the nanofibers became more negatively charged, which improved the dispersibility in water through electrostatic repulsion, resulting in a drastic increase in the transparency of the nanofiber dispersion. This method provides a general approach for the surface modification of cellulose nanofibers to increase water dispersibility.

A highly stable bimetallic organic framework for enhanced electrical performance of cellulose nanofiber-based triboelectric nanogenerators.

Project description:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have garnered considerable attention as an emerging energy harvesting technology. To improve the electrical properties of the triboelectric materials in TENGs, various micro- and nanomaterials with strong charge-trapping capabilities are introduced as filler materials. However, the fillers generally perform a single function and lack long-term operational durability. Hence, further research is required to achieve stable and efficient TENGs. In this study, NH2 metal-organic frameworks (NH2-MOFs) were combined with a cellulose nanofiber (CNF) to prepare a composite film. NH2-MOFs have an aminated bimetallic organic backbone with strong charge-induction and charge-trapping capabilities. Thus, their addition significantly improved the stability, positive triboelectric properties and charge-trapping performance of the composite film. The optimized composite film and a fluorinated ethylene propylene film were used as triboelectric pairs to assemble a TENG. The electrical performance of the TENG was approximately 230% greater than that of a TENG with a pure CNF film and remained very stable for at least 90 days. These results demonstrate that NH2-MOFs are promising fillers for improving the performance of TENGs and expanding the range of materials used in TENG construction.

One-pot synthesis of 2-bromopropionyl esterified cellulose nanofibrils as hydrophobic coating and film.

Project description:Hydrophobic 2-bromopropionyl esterified cellulose nanofibrils (Br-CNFs) have been facilely produced via one-pot esterification of cellulose with 2-bromopropionyl bromide (BPB) then in situ disintegrated by ultrasonication in the same reaction media. Br-CNFs optimally produced by this robust esterification-ultrasonication approach, i.e., 5 : 1 BPB to anhydroglucose (AGU) molar ratio, 23 °C, 6 h and ultrasonication (50% amplitude, 30 min), were 4.6 nm thick, 29.3 nm wide, and 1 μm long in 71% yield and 48% crystallinity. Successful 2-bromopropionyl esterification of cellulose was confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR. The degree of substitution (DS) of surface hydroxyl to 2-bromopropanoate was determined to be between 0.53 (DSs) based on XRD and Br-CNF dimensions and 0.56 (DSNMR) from solution-state 1H NMR. Br-CNF dispersions in DMF exhibited Newtonian behaviors at concentrations below and shear thinning behaviors above 0.5%, enabling homogeneous deposition at dilute concentrations up to 0.01% into a few nm ultra-thin layers as well as blade coating of gel into ca. 100 μm thick film, all similarly hydrophobic with surface water contact angles (WCAs) in the range of 70-75°. The ultra-high modulus and strength film from gel coating further showed the potential for dual high-strength and hydrophobic applications of Br-CNFs.

Enhanced Aerosol Particle Filtration Efficiency of Nonwoven Porous Cellulose Triacetate Nanofiber Mats.

Project description:Aerosol particle filtration in most penetrating particle size (MPPS) region is of great challenge for conventional nonwoven filter mats. The present work, therefore, redesigns conventional filter mats by introducing porous structure. A combination of thermally induced phase separation and breath figure mechanism was employed to synthesize porous cellulose triacetate fibers, in conjunction with the volatile solvent methylene chloride. The ambient humidity, the concentration of the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) secondary polymer, and the ethanol cosolvent were all adjusted to modify the Taylor cone formation, jet stability, and fiber porosity. After fiber formation, the PVP was removed to obtain a superhydrophobic material. To distinguish the effect of pores, the performance of porous and nonporous nanofibers having similar sizes was conducted. Tests were performed using various dust particle sizes, and the results show that the collection efficiency of the porous fibers, resulting from particle diffusion, inertial impaction, and interception, was improved. Interestingly, the efficiency of the porous fibers in the MPPS region was exceptionally enhanced (up to 95%), demonstrating that the presence of dynamic pores greatly contributes to particle capture.
