Dataset on critical angular clamping speeds of fasteners.

ABSTRACT: This article reports on an experiment that studied the critical angular clamping speeds for fasteners using the Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The study aimed to investigate the stick-slip phenomenon, a critical factor limiting the angular speed. The stick-slip was measured using the stick-slip factor, which is defined as the ratio of stick-slip chattering amplitude to frequency. The investigation focused on the factors that affect the stick-slip factor, torque, and clamping force (preload): friction coefficient, clamping angular velocity, cathodic electrodeposition, and hardness of the bolthead bearing plate. Automated predictive algorithms can utilize the data collected from this study to prevent the occurrence of the stick-slip phenomenon in screw clamping processes.

HRSBallast: A high-resolution dataset featuring scanned angular, semi-angular and rounded railway ballast.

Project description:A high-resolution dataset of digitally scanned railway ballast (HRSBallast) is presented, consisting of 108 individual, digitised samples. The ballast samples were sourced from both a railway test track section located on a heavy haul coal export line in South Africa and a local quarry. The sampled ballast from the field installation represent angular, semi-angular and rounded geometric features depending on the sampled location. The fresh ballast sourced from the quarry was iteratively tested using a hydraulic actuator in a small-scale box test which forms part of a separate research project. The ballast samples were scanned before and after every test to ascertain the changes in geometry, in addition to the loss of material due to attrition. The field and laboratory samples were digitised using a high-resolution, commercial (Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) VSLAM-based scanner with a 40-micrometre accuracy. Samples which were fractured by the hydraulic actuator are also included in the dataset. HRSBallast serves as a reference dataset for granular media (GM) simulations utilizing DEM (discrete element method), degradation or wear modelling, digital assets for the creation of synthetic datasets for deep learning applications, embedded railway instrumentation and video games requiring high-resolution geometry.

A kinematic and kinetic dataset of 18 above-knee amputees walking at various speeds.

Project description:Motion capture is necessary to quantify gait deviations in individuals with lower-limb amputations. However, access to the patient population and the necessary equipment is limited. Here we present the first open biomechanics dataset for 18 individuals with unilateral above-knee amputations walking at different speeds. Based on their ability to comfortably walk at 0.8?m/s, subjects were divided into two groups, namely K2 and K3. The K2 group walked at [0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8] m/s; the K3 group walked at [0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4] m/s. Full-body biomechanics was collected using a 10-camera motion capture system and a fully instrumented treadmill. The presented open dataset will enable (i) clinicians to understand the biomechanical demand required to walk with a knee and ankle prosthesis at various speeds, (ii) researchers in biomechanics to gain new insights into the gait deviations of individuals with above-knee amputations, and (iii) engineers to improve prosthesis design and function.

A biomechanics dataset of healthy human walking at various speeds, step lengths and step widths.

Project description:The biomechanics of human walking are well documented for standard conditions such as for self-selected step length and preferred speed. However, humans can and do walk with a variety of other step lengths and speeds during daily living. The variation of biomechanics across gait conditions may be important for describing and determining the mechanics of locomotion. To address this, we present an open biomechanics dataset of steady walking at a broad range of conditions, including 33 experimentally-controlled combinations of speed (0.7-2.0 m·s-1), step length (0.5-1.1 m), and step width (0-0.4 m). The dataset contains ground reaction forces and motions from healthy young adults (N = 10), collected using split-belt instrumented treadmill and motion capture systems respectively. Most trials also include pre-computed inverse dynamics, including 3D joint positions, angles, torques and powers, as well as intersegmental forces. Apart from raw data, we also provide five strides of good quality data without artifacts for each trial, and sample software for visualization and analysis.

Novel domestic building energy consumption dataset: 1D timeseries and 2D Gramian Angular Fields representation.

Project description:This data article describes a dataset collected in 2022 in a domestic household in the UK. The data provides appliance-level power consumption data and ambient environmental conditions as a timeseries and as a collection of 2D images created using Gramian Angular Fields (GAF). The importance of the dataset lies in (a) providing the research community with a dataset that combines appliance-level data coupled with important contextual information for the surrounding environment; (b) presents energy data summaries as 2D images to help obtain novel insights using data visualization and Machine Learning (ML). The methodology involves installing smart plugs to a number of domestic appliances, environmental and occupancy sensors, and connecting the plugs and the sensors to a High-Performance Edge Computing (HPEC) system to privately store, pre-process, and post-process data. The heterogenous data include several parameters, including power consumption (W), voltage (V), current (A), ambient indoor temperature (°C), relative indoor humidity (RH%), and occupancy (binary). The dataset also includes outdoor weather conditions based on data from The Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) including temperature (°C), outdoor humidity (RH%), barometric pressure (hPA), wind bearing (deg), and windspeed (m/s). This dataset is valuable for energy efficiency researchers, electrical engineers, and computer scientists to develop, validate, and deploy and computer vision and data-driven energy efficiency systems.

A multimodal dataset of human gait at different walking speeds established on injury-free adult participants.

Project description:Human motion capture is used in various fields to analyse, understand and reproduce the diversity of movements that are required during daily-life activities. The proposed dataset of human gait has been established on 50 adults healthy and injury-free for lower and upper extremities in the most recent six months, with no lower and upper extremity surgery in the last two years. Participants were asked to walk on a straight level walkway at 5 speeds during one unique session: 0-0.4 m.s-1, 0.4-0.8 m.s-1, 0.8-1.2 m.s-1, self-selected spontaneous and fast speeds. Three dimensional trajectories of 52 reflective markers spread over the whole body, 3D ground reaction forces and moment, and electromyographic signals were simultaneously recorded. For each participants, a minimum of 3 trials per condition have been made available in the dataset for a total of 1143 trials. This dataset could increase the sample size of similar datasets, lead to analyse the effect of walking speed on gait or conduct unusual analysis of gait thanks to the full body markerset used.

An RFI-suppressed SMOS L-band multi-angular brightness temperature dataset spanning over a decade (since 2010).

Project description:The Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) was the first mission providing L-band multi-angular brightness temperature (TB) at the global scale. However, radio frequency interferences (RFI) and aliasing effects degrade, when present SMOS TBs, and thus affect the retrieval of land parameters. To alleviate this, a refined SMOS multi-angular TB dataset was generated based on a two-step regression approach. This approach smooths the TBs and reconstructs data at the incidence angle with large TB uncertainties. Compared with Centre Aval de Traitement des Données SMOS (CATDS) TB product, this dataset shows a better relationship with the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) TB and enhanced correlation with in-situ measured soil moisture. This RFI-suppressed SMOS TB dataset, spanning more than a decade (since 2010), is expected to provide opportunities for better retrieval of land parameters and scientific applications.

Dataset of angular and compressive responses of biomimetic artificial spinal discs fabricated using multi-material additive manufacturing.

Project description:To explore the influence of different biomimetic designs and multi-material additive manufacturing on the performance of a multi-material artificial spinal disc (ASD) in terms of restoring natural mechanics, four biomimetic ASD designs together with a control design are first fabricated using a Stratasys Connex3 Objet500 inkjet-based, multi-material 3D printer and their mechanical responses are measured using in-vitro mechanical testing. The mechanical tests include an angular test and a compression test to measure the ASD's behavior in the seven most frequent loading scenarios of a spine: flexion, extension, left/right lateral bending, left/right axial rotation, and compression. The angular test is performed using a custom six degrees of freedom, computer-controlled spine testing system together with an optoelectronic motion analysis system, while the compression test is performed using an Instron testing machine. The presented dataset includes 3D models of the five ASD designs, and raw data of the angular and compressive responses at different strain rates of the five ASD designs. This dataset is related to the article "Exploration of the influence of different biomimetic designs of 3D printed multi-material artificial spinal disc on the natural mechanics restoration" where the detailed designs and load responses of the five multi-material ASDs are presented (Yu et al., 2021). This dataset helps to gain insights into the influence of different biomimetic design concepts on the mechanics of a multi-material ASD and serves as a reference for the future design of multi-material ASDs.

A spatially-explicit harmonized global dataset of critical infrastructure.

Project description:Critical infrastructure (CI) is fundamental for the functioning of a society and forms the backbone for socio-economic development. Natural and human-made threats, however, pose a major risk to CI. Therefore, geospatial data on the location of CI are fundamental for in-depth risk analyses, which are required to inform policy decisions aiming to reduce risk. We present a first-of-its-kind globally harmonized spatial dataset for the representation of CI. In this study, we: (1) collect and harmonize detailed geospatial data of the world's main CI systems into a single geospatial database; and (2) develop the Critical Infrastructure Spatial Index (CISI) to express the global spatial intensity of CI. The CISI aggregates high-resolution geospatial OpenStreetMap (OSM) data of 39 CI types that are categorized under seven overarching CI systems. The detailed geospatial data are rasterized into a harmonized and consistent dataset with a resolution of 0.10 × 0.10 and 0.25 × 0.25 degrees. The dataset can be applied to explore the current landscape of CI, identify CI hotspots, and as exposure input for large-scale risk assessments.

Whole-GUV patch-clamping.

Project description:Studying how the membrane modulates ion channel and transporter activity is challenging because cells actively regulate membrane properties, whereas existing in vitro systems have limitations, such as residual solvent and unphysiologically high membrane tension. Cell-sized giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) would be ideal for in vitro electrophysiology, but efforts to measure the membrane current of intact GUVs have been unsuccessful. In this work, two challenges for obtaining the "whole-GUV" patch-clamp configuration were identified and resolved. First, unless the patch pipette and GUV pressures are precisely matched in the GUV-attached configuration, breaking the patch membrane also ruptures the GUV. Second, GUVs shrink irreversibly because the membrane/glass adhesion creating the high-resistance seal (>1 GΩ) continuously pulls membrane into the pipette. In contrast, for cell-derived giant plasma membrane vesicles (GPMVs), breaking the patch membrane allows the GPMV contents to passivate the pipette surface, thereby dynamically blocking membrane spreading in the whole-GMPV mode. To mimic this dynamic passivation mechanism, beta-casein was encapsulated into GUVs, yielding a stable, high-resistance, whole-GUV configuration for a range of membrane compositions. Specific membrane capacitance measurements confirmed that the membranes were truly solvent-free and that membrane tension could be controlled over a physiological range. Finally, the potential for ion transport studies was tested using the model ion channel, gramicidin, and voltage-clamp fluorometry measurements were performed with a voltage-dependent fluorophore/quencher pair. Whole-GUV patch-clamping allows ion transport and other voltage-dependent processes to be studied while controlling membrane composition, tension, and shape.

Dataset on powered two wheelers fall and critical events detection.

Project description:In this data article, we will present the data coming from 3D Inertial Measurement Unit (3-accelerometers and 3-gyroscopes sensors) mounted on the motorcycle collected during a motorcycle's falls experiments. Developing a motorcycle's fall events detection algorithms is a very challenging task because the motorcycle falling is multi-factorial and is strongly influenced by many unknown factors. To solve this issue, one solution can be to use a data-set collected during controlled experiments, knowing that the real motorcycle falls cannot be replicated, a stuntman can be chosen to be as close to reality as possible. The experiments have been conducted based on predefined scenarios such as: fall in a curve, fall on a slippery straight road section, fall with leaning of the motorcycle ''intentional manoeuvre'' and fall in a roundabout. These scenarios have been designed based on realistic falls. Other experiments have been conducted under different extreme driving situations. These extreme manoeuvres were carried out on track by professional riders. The purpose of performing these manoeuvres was to obtain a dataset describing the limit handling behaviour.
