Project description:The mature processes of metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have attracted considerable interest. However, the low sensitivity of metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors is still challenging, and constrains its practical applications. Bimetallic nanoparticles are of interest owing to their excellent catalytic properties. This excellent feature of bimetallic nanoparticles can solve the problems existing in MOS gas sensors, such as the low response, high operating temperature and slow response time. To enhance acetone sensing performance, we successfully synthesized Au-Pd/ZnO nanorods. In this work, we discovered that Au-Pd nanoparticles modified on ZnO nanorods can remarkably enhance sensor response. The Au-Pd/ZnO gas sensor has long-term stability and an excellent response/recovery process. This excellent sensing performance is attributed to the synergistic catalytic effect of bimetallic AuPd nanoparticles. Moreover, the electronic and chemical sensitization of noble metals also makes a great contribution. This work presents a simple method for preparing Au-Pd/ZnO nanorods and provides a new solution for the detection of acetone based on metal oxide semiconductor.

Project description:Listeria monocytogenes is a hazardous foodborne pathogen that is able to cause acute meningitis, encephalitis, and sepsis to humans. The efficient detection of 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, which has been verified as a biomarker for the exhalation of Listeria monocytogenes, can feasibly evaluate whether the bacteria are contained in food. Herein, we developed an outstanding 3-hydroxy-2-butanone gas sensor based on the microelectromechanical systems using Au/ZnO NS as a sensing material. In this work, ZnO nanosheets were synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction, and Au nanoparticles (~5.5 nm) were prepared via an oleylamine reduction method. Then, an ultrasonic treatment was carried out to modified Au nanoparticles onto ZnO nanosheets. The XRD, BET, TEM, and XPS were used to characterize their morphology, microstructure, catalytic structure, specific surface area, and chemical composition. The response of the 1.0% Au/ZnO NS sensors vs. 25 ppm 3-hydroxy-2-butanone was up to 174.04 at 230 °C. Moreover, these sensors presented fast response/recovery time (6 s/7 s), great selectivity, and an outstanding limit of detection (lower than 0.5 ppm). This work is full of promise for developing a nondestructive, rapid and practical sensor, which would improve Listeria monocytogenes evaluation in foods.

Project description:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles modified with uniformly dispersed silver (Ag) nanoparticles (Ag-ZnO) were prepared in one step by calcining precursor electrospun nanofibers. The molar ratios of Ag to Zn in the precursor solutions were 0, 1, 3, and 5%. The microstructure of the Ag-ZnO sensor was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The existence of metallic Ag was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the gas sensing properties of Ag-ZnO were investigated. The results showed that the ZnO nanoparticles after Ag nanoparticles modification exhibited excellent gas sensing performance to ethanol and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The optimal working temperature of the Ag-ZnO sensor significantly decreased for ethanol compared with pure ZnO. The 3% Ag-ZnO sensor exhibited the fastest response to ethanol with the response/recovery times of only 5 and 9 s, respectively. However, all the Ag-ZnO-based gas sensors showed a high response value to H2S, especially the 3% Ag-ZnO gas sensor exhibited a maximum response value of 298 at 10 ppm H2S. These results could be attributed to the spillover effect and electron sensitization effect of Ag nanoparticles, which led to more absorbed oxygen species and active sites, and thereby can further enhance the gas sensing performances of ZnO-based gas sensors.

Project description:Pure and Au-decorated sub-micrometer ZnO spheres were successfully grown on glass substrates by simple chemical bath deposition and photoreduction methods. The analysis of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), UV-vis absorption, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra results were used to verify the incorporation of plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs) on the ZnO film. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectra indicated that a surface plasmonic effect exists with a fast rate of charge transfer from Au nanoparticles to the sub-micrometer ZnO sphere, which suggested the strong possibility of the use of the material for the design of efficient catalytic devices. The NO2 sensing ability of as-deposited ZnO films was investigated with different gas concentrations at an optimized sensing temperature of 120 °C. Surface decoration of plasmonic Au nanoparticles provided an enhanced sensitivity (141 times) with improved response (τRes = 9 s) and recovery time (τRec = 39 s). The enhanced gas sensing performance and photocatalytic degradation processes are suggested to be attributed to not only the surface plasmon resonance effect, but also due to a Schottky barrier between plasmonic Au and ZnO structures.

Project description:An ordered array of 1D ZnO nanorods obtained by colloidal templating is shown to dramatically enhance the sensing response of NO x at room temperature by confining light and creating periodic structures. The sensitivity is measured for a concentration varying from 2 to 10 ppm (response 53% at 10 ppm) at room temperature under white light illumination with ≈225 nm hole diameter. In contrast, structures with ≈450 nm hole size show better sensing under (response 98% at 10 ppm) elevated temperatures in dark conditions, which is attributed to the increased surface chemical interactions with NO x molecules due to the porous nature and enhanced accessible surface area of ZnO nanorods. Further, the decoration of ZnO Nanorods with gold nanoparticles shows enhanced sensor performance (response 130% at 10 ppm) due to localized surface plasmon resonance under white light illumination. The findings may lead to new opportunities in the visible light-activated room-temperature NO x sensors for healthcare applications.

Project description:Zinc oxide rod structures are synthetized and subsequently modified with Au, Fe2O3, or Cu2O to form nanoscale interfaces at the rod surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy corroborates the presence of Fe in the form of oxide-Fe2O3; Cu in the form of two oxides-CuO and Cu2O, with the major presence of Cu2O; and Au in three oxidation states-Au3+, Au+, and Au0, with the content of metallic Au being the highest among the other states. These structures are tested towards nitrogen dioxide, ethanol, acetone, carbon monoxide, and toluene, finding a remarkable increase in the response and sensitivity of the Au-modified ZnO films, especially towards nitrogen dioxide and ethanol. The results for the Au-modified ZnO films report about 47 times higher response to 10 ppm of nitrogen dioxide as compared to the non-modified structures with a sensitivity of 39.96% ppm-1 and a limit of detection of 26 ppb to this gas. These results are attributed to the cumulative effects of several factors, such as the presence of oxygen vacancies, the gas-sensing mechanism influenced by the nano-interfaces formed between ZnO and Au, and the catalytic nature of the Au nanoparticles.

Project description:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is the major reason for acid rain and respiratory illness in humans. Therefore, rapid, portable, and effective detection of NO2 is essential. Herein, a novel and simple method to construct a ZnO-SnO2 heterojunction is fabricated by pyrolysis of bimetallic metal organic frameworks. The sensitivity of ZnO-SnO2 heterojunction towards 0.2 ppm NO2 under 180 °C is 37, which is 3 times that of pure ZnO and SnO2. The construction of heterojunction speeds up the response-recovery process, and this kind of material exhibits lower detection limit. The construction of heterojunction can significantly improve the NO2 sensitivity. The selectivity, stability, and moisture resistance of ZnO-SnO2 heterojunction are carried out. This could enable the realization of highly selective and sensitive portable detection of NO2.

Project description:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor environments have typical features of multiple components, high concentration, and long duration. The development of gas sensors with high sensitivity to multiple VOCs is of great significance to protect human health. Herein, we proposed a sensitive ZnO/WO3 composite chemi-resistive sensor facilely fabricated via a sacrificial template approach. Based on the transferable properties of self-assembled monolayer colloidal crystal (MCC) templates, two-dimensional honeycomb-like ordered porous ZnO/WO3 sensing matrixes were constructed in situ on commercial ceramic tube substrates with curved and rough surfaces. The nanocomposite thin films are about 250 nm in thickness with large-scale structural consistency and integrity, which facilitates characteristic responses with highly sensitivity and reliability. Furthermore, the nanocomposite sensor shows simultaneous responses to multiple VOCs that commonly exist in daily life with an obvious suppression sensing for traditional flammable gases. Particularly, a detection limit of 0.1 ppm with a second-level response/recovery time can be achieved, which is beneficial for real-time air quality assessments. We proposed a heterojunction-induced sensing enhancement mechanism for the ZnO/WO3 nanocomposite film in which the formation of abundant heterojunctions between ZnO and WO3 NPs significantly increases the thickness of the electron depletion layer in the bulk film and improves the formation of active oxygen species on the surface, which is conducive to enhanced responses for reducing VOC gases. This work not only provides a simple approach for the fabrication of high-performance gas sensors but also opens an achievable avenue for air quality assessment based on VOC concentration detection.

Project description:Semiconducting metal oxides with nanofiber (NF) morphologies are among the most promising materials for the realization of gas sensors. In this study, we have prepared electrospun ZnO-NiO composite NFs with different amounts of NiO (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80% wt%) for the systematic study of ethanol gas sensing. The fabricated composite NFs were annealed at 600 °C for crystallization. Based on characterization studies, NFs were produced with desired morphologies, phases, and chemical compositions. Ethanol gas sensing studies revealed that the sensor with 40 wt% NiO had the highest response (3.6 to 10 ppm ethanol) at 300 °C among all gas sensors. The enhanced gas response was ascribed to the formation of sufficient amounts of p-n NiO-ZnO heterojunctions, NFs' high surface areas due to their one-dimensional morphologies, and acid-base interactions between ZnO and ethanol. This research highlights the need for the optimization of ZnO-NiO composite NFs so that they achieve the highest sensing response, which can be extended to other similar metal oxides.

Project description:Sonodynamic therapy has attracted widespread attention for cancer treatment because of its noninvasiveness and high tissue-penetration ability. Generally, ultrasound irradiation of sonosensitizers produces separated electrons (e-) and holes (h+), which inhibits cancer by producing reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the separated electrons (e-) and holes (h+) could easily recombine, lowering the yield of ROS and hindering the application of sonodynamic therapy (SDT). Herein, we present a highly efficient sonosensitizer system for enhanced sonodynamic therapy built on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets, bridged ZnO and Au nanoparticles, coated with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). The ultrasound irradiation activates ZnO nanoparticles to generate separated electron-hole (e--h+) pairs, and the rGO nanosheets facilitate electron transfer from ZnO to Au nanoparticles because of the narrow band gap of rGO, which could efficiently restrain the recombination of the e--h+ pairs, thereby significantly augmenting the production of ROS to kill cancer cells, such as U373MG, HeLa, and CT26 cells. Moreover, rGO nanosheets integrated with Au nanoparticles could catalyze the endogenous decomposition of H2O2 into O2, which can alleviate hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME).
