Project description:Inspired by the freezing tolerance performances found in living creatures, an effect approach is presented to develop novel antifreezing polymeric organohydrogel actuators. Through construction of a bilayer hydrogel including a nonresponsive polyacrylamide (PAAm) layer and a pH-responsive polyacrylic acid (PAA) layer in the presence of a mixed solvent of water and glycerol, organohydrogel actuators that could produce various shape deformations at subzero temperatures have been achieved, and the actuating speed could be tuned by adjusting the temperature and the ratio between glycerol and water. Moreover, a series of application demonstrations including a weightlifting robot, artificial valve, and robotic arm have been displayed. In addition, by introducing the ionic compound KI into the glycerol-based organogel, flexible conductors that could perform stable sensing performance over a wide range of temperatures from -30°C to 60°C have been developed.

Project description:The key to developing high-performance polymer electrolytes (PEs) is to achieve their high strength and high ionic conductivity, but this is still challenging. Herein, we designed a new double-network PE based on the nonhydrolytic sol-gel reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate and in situ polymerization of zwitterions. The as-prepared PE possesses high strength (0.75 Mpa) and high stretchability (560%) due to the efficient dissipation energy of the inorganic network and elastic characteristics of the polymer network. In addition, the highest ionic conductivity of the PE reaches 0.44 mS cm-1 at 30 °C owning to the construction of dynamic ion channels between the polyzwitterion segments and between the polyzwitterion segments and ionic liquids. Furthermore, the inorganic network can act as Lewis acid to adsorb trace impurities, resulting in a prepared electrolyte with a high electrochemical window over 5 V. The excellent interface compatibility of the as-prepared PE with a Li metal electrode is also confirmed. Our work provides new insights into the design and preparation of high-performance polymer-based electrolytes for solid-state energy storage devices.

Project description:Hydrogel electrolyte is widely used in solid energy storage devices because of its high ionic conductivity, environmental friendliness, and non-leakage property. However, hydrogel electrolyte is not resistant to freezing. Here, a high proton conductive zwitterionic hydrogel electrolyte with super conductivity of 1.51 mS cm-1 at -50 °C is fabricated by random copolymerization of acrylamide and zwitterionic monomer in the presence of 1 m H2 SO4 and ethylene glycol (EG). The antifreezing performance and low temperature conductivity are ascribed to hydrogen bonds and ionic bonds between the components and water molecules in the system and can be tuned by changing the monomer ratio and EG contents. The proton hopping migration on the ionic group of the polymer chains and Grotthuss proton transport mechanism are responsible for the high proton conductivity while Grotthuss transport is dominated at the glassy state of the polymer chains. The electrolyte-assembled supercapacitor (SC) offers high specific capacitance of 93.5 F g-1 at 25 °C and 62.0 F g-1 at -50 °C with a capacitance retention of 91.1% and 81.5% after 10 000 cycles, respectively. The SC can even work at -70 °C. The electrolyte outperforms most reported antifreezing hydrogel electrolytes and has high potential in low-temperature devices.

Project description:Amidoxime-functionalized hydrogels are one of most promising adsorbents for high-efficiency uranium (U) extraction from seawater, but bioadhesion on their surface seriously decreases their adsorption efficiency and largely shortens their service life. Herein, a semi-interpenetrating zwitterion-poly(amidoxime) (ZW-PAO) hydrogel was explored through introducing a PAO polymer into a poly [3-(dimethyl 4-vinylbenzyl amino) propyl sulfonate] (PDVBAP) polyzwitterionic (PZW) network via ultraviolet (UV) polymerization. Owing to the anti-polyelectrolyte effect of the PZW network, this ZW-PAO hydrogel can provide excellent super-hydrophilicity in seawater for high-efficiency U-adsorption from seawater. Furthermore, the ZW-PAO hydrogel had outstanding anti-biofouling performance for both highly enhanced U-adsorption and a relatively long working life in natural seawater. As a result, during only 25 days in seawater (without filtering bacteria), the U-uptake amount of this ZW-PAO hydrogel can reach 9.38 mg/g and its average rate can reach 0.375 mg/(g∙day), which is excellent among reported adsorbents. This work has explored a promising hydrogel for high-efficiency U-recovery from natural seawater and will inspire new strategy for U-adsorbing materials.

Project description:A viscous feature is beneficial for a solid electrolyte with respect to assembling solid-state batteries, which can change the solid-solid contacts from point to face. Here, novel halide-based deep eutectic solid electrolytes (DESEs) prepared by a facile ball milling method is reported. The mixture of halides triggers the deep eutectic phenomena by intermolecular interactions, leading to diverse morphologies and viscous statuses in terms of composition. Chemical- and micro-structure analyses via the cryogenic technique reveal that the LiCl and LiF nanoparticles are dispersed in an amorphous halide matrix, which endow freely mobile ions for fast ion transport. The optimized DESE thus achieves low activation energy and high ionic conductivity of 16 mS cm-1 at room temperature, one of the highest values among various electrolytes so far. By integrating with the active materials to form a composite cathode, the viscous DESE yields a super-dense composite pellet which possesses intensively enhanced ionic conductivity in contrast to those formed by the sulfide-based electrolyte additives, demonstrating an attractive application prospect.

Project description:We describe a rapid and simple method to create Ag nanostructures by using direct mechanical patterning of ionic Ag ink coating under gentle pressure, then thermal annealing to reduce the ionic Ag ink to a metallic Ag layer. The ionic liquid-phase Ag coating is easily obtained by spin-coating ionic Ag ink that has appropriate Ag concentration and can be either printed or imprinted on the desired substrate by using a soft elastomer patterning mold, then reduced to the Ag nanostructure by subsequent thermal annealing. More specifically, we present two methods: transfer printing and soft nanoimprinting. In transfer printing, the ionic Ag ink is first inked onto the elastomer mold which then contacts the target substrate to transfer the Ag nanopattern. In soft nanoimprinting, the elastomer mold conducts soft imprinting to engineer the ionic Ag ink coating to the Ag nanostructure. We systematically investigate the optimal patterning conditions by controlling the initial Ag ink concentration and the coating, printing, imprinting, and annealing conditions, to derive Ag architecture that has tunable photonic functionality. As an example, we demonstrate polarization-sensitive reflective color filters that exploit shape-tunable Ag nanostructures fabricated by soft nanoimprinting using a controllably-stretched elastomer mold.

Project description:Flexible piezoelectric materials capable of withstanding large deformation play key roles in flexible electronics. Ferroelectric ceramics with a high piezoelectric coefficient are inherently brittle, whereas polar polymers exhibit a low piezoelectric coefficient. Here we report a highly stretchable/compressible piezoelectric composite composed of ferroelectric ceramic skeleton, elastomer matrix and relaxor ferroelectric-based hybrid at the ceramic/matrix interface as dielectric transition layers, exhibiting a giant piezoelectric coefficient of 250 picometers per volt, high electromechanical coupling factor keff of 65%, ultralow acoustic impedance of 3MRyl and high cyclic stability under 50% compression strain. The superior flexibility and piezoelectric properties are attributed to the electric polarization and mechanical load transfer paths formed by the ceramic skeleton, and dielectric mismatch mitigation between ceramic fillers and elastomer matrix by the dielectric transition layer. The synergistic fusion of ultrahigh piezoelectric properties and superior flexibility in these polymer composites is expected to drive emerging applications in flexible smart electronics.

Project description:Coronary artery bypass grafting is acknowledged as a major clinical approach for treatment of severe coronary artery atherosclerotic heart disease. This procedure typically requires autologous small-diameter vascular grafts. However, the limited availability of the donor vessels and associated trauma during tissue harvest underscore the necessity for artificial arterial alternatives. Herein, decellularized bovine intercostal arteries were successfully fabricated with lengths ranging from 15 to 30 cm, which also closely match the inner diameters of human coronary arteries. These decellularized arterial grafts exhibited great promise following poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) grafting from the inner surface. Such surface modification endowed the decellularized arteries with superior mechanical strength, enhanced anticoagulant properties and improved biocompatibility, compared to the decellularized bovine intercostal arteries alone, or even those decellularized grafts modified with both heparin and vascular endothelial growth factor. After replacement of the carotid arteries in rabbits, all surface-modified vascular grafts have shown good patency within 30 days post-implantation. Notably, strong signal was observed after α-SMA immunofluorescence staining on the PMPC-grafted vessels, indicating significant potential for regenerating the vascular smooth muscle layer and thereby restoring full structures of the artery. Consequently, the decellularized bovine intercostal arteries surface modified by PMPC can emerge as a potent candidate for small-diameter artificial blood vessels, and have shown great promise to serve as viable substitutes of arterial autografts.

Project description:Due to their remarkable cycle stability and outstanding capacitance, ABO3-type perovskite materials have emerged as highly effective electrode materials, delivering remarkable electrochemical performance. In this study, BaCoO3/rGO composites with varying rGO content (0, 5, 10, and 15%), designated as PBCO, BCO-I, BCO-II, and BCO-III, were synthesized using a solvothermal process. These composites were evaluated for their potential as electrode materials in supercapacitor (SC) applications. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of well-crystallized samples with a hexagonal phase structure. Field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed the desired level of porosity, well-defined morphologies, and uniformly distributed grains, which are beneficial for electrochemical applications. Elemental analysis verified the stoichiometric composition of the samples. Comprehensive electrochemical characterization was performed using cyclic voltammetry in a 2 M KOH solution, revealing a transition from diffusive control (EDLC) to hybrid capacitor behavior. Additionally, galvanostatic charge-discharge experiments demonstrated that the BCO-III composite exhibited a specific capacity of 90.15 C g-1, an energy density of 21.28 W h kg-1, and a power density of 531.25 W kg-1. The transference number (t +) is found to be 0.2, which means that higher current will be driven through the anion. Further, the sample BCO-III, exhibiting the highest specific capacity, was evaluated for stability and demonstrated a remarkable retention rate of 90% after 5k GCD cycles and a remarkable coulombic efficiency of 94%, with an excellent diffusion rate and ionic conductivity of about 4.51 × 10-14 cm2 s-1, 0.128 S cm-1, respectively, highlighting its significant potential for SC applications.

Project description:Despite significant advances in the development of flexible gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs), there are still problems to be addressed to apply them to flexible electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs), including interfacial interactions between the electrolyte and electrode under deformation. Previously reported EDLCs using GPEs have laminated structures with weak interfacial interactions between the electrode and electrolyte, leading to fragility upon elongation and low power density due to lower utilization of the surface area of the carbon material in the electrode. To overcome these problems, we present a new strategy for constructing an epoxy-based GPE that can provide strong adhesion between electrode and electrolyte. The GPE is synthesized by polymerization of epoxy and an ionic liquid. This GPE shows high flexibility up to 509% and excellent adhesive properties that enable strong chemical bonding between the electrode and electrolyte. Moreover, the GPE is stable at high voltage and high temperature with high ionic conductivity of ∼10-3 S cm-1. EDLCs based on the developed GPE exhibit good compatibility between the electrode and electrolyte and work properly when deformed. The EDLCs also show a high specific capacitance of 99 F g-1, energy density of 113 W h kg-1, and power density of 4.5 kW g-1. The excellent performance of the GPE gives it tremendous potential for use in next generation electronic devices such as wearable devices.
