Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Chinese version of the intensive care oral care frequency and assessment scale.

ABSTRACT:

Objectives

The objective of this study was to translate the Intensive Care Oral Care Frequency and Assessment Scale into Chinese and to evaluate its reliability and validity in Chinese ICU patients.

Methods

This study was conducted using a cross-sectional survey design in ICUs of three tertiary hospitals in Huai'an and Taizhou from October 2022 to April 2023. The Chinese version of the Intensive Care Oral Care Frequency and Assessment Scale (C-ICOCFAS) was developed by expert consultation and cultural adaptation according to the two-person verbatim translation-back translation criteria described in the Brislin model. Item analysis was conducted using correlation analysis, and validity analysis included content validity, construct validity, and criterion validity. Reliability analyses included Cronbach's alpha coefficient, Guttman split-half reliability, and interrater reliability.

Results

The Chinese version of the scale consisted of one dimension and nine items, consistent with the original version. Exploratory factor analysis showed KMO = 0.891, and the cumulative variance contribution reached 65.534 %. The confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good fit, χ2/df = 2.124, NFI = 0.950, GFI = 0.942, IFI = 0.973, CFI = 0.973, SRMR = 0.037, and RMSEA = 0.073. The content validity of the scale was 0.97, and the content validity of the items ranged from 0.83 to 1.00; the criterion validity was 0.969; the Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.919; the total item correlation coefficient was 0.725-0.831; the Guttman split-half reliability was 0.919; and the interrater reliability was 0.885.

Conclusion

The C-ICOCFAS has good reliability and validity and can effectively guide nurses in the frequency of oral care for ICU patients.

Implications for clinical practice

This tool can significantly improve the level of oral care among ICU patients and further promote the health and safety of patients. These findings can help clinical nursing experts to better understand and master the use of scales and standards to improve nursing.

Project description:BackgroundThe decisions individuals make regarding oral health reflect their values. Prioritizing oral and dental health is essential for public health. This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Persian version of the Oral Health Values Questionnaire.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted involving 500 adults aged 18 years and older at health centers in Shiraz in 2023. The Original Oral Health Values Scale (OHVS) questionnaire was translated into Persian using a forward-backward translation. Participants completed the Persian version of the OHVS, which comprises a 12-item scale with a four-factor structure: professional dental care, appearance and health, flossing, and preservation of natural teeth. The Content Validity Index (CVI), Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Scale-Level Content Validity Index (S-CVI/Ave) were assessed. Test-retest reliability and Cronbach's alpha were used to evaluate the internal consistency of the questionnaire. To determine the adequacy of the sample size, the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) index, with a minimum value of 0.7, Bartlett's test of sphericity, eigenvalues greater than 1, and the Varimax rotation method were utilized, using SPSS Version 24 statistical software.ResultsAll questions demonstrated satisfactory Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Content Validity Index (CVI), scoring above the expected thresholds of 0.8 and 0.9, respectively. The test-retest correlation results confirmed the reliability of the questionnaire, with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.7 for all questions and their sub-areas. Internal consistency was also established usings domains. Factor analysis revealed four primary components with eigenvalues greater than 1, which collectively accounted for 58.963% of the total variance.ConclusionsThe Persian version of the OHVS demonstrated excellent validity and reliability. Consequently, it can be regarded as a reliable and valuable tool for epidemiological and behavioral dental studies.

Project description:BackgroundIn recent years, oral care for older people has received extensive attention in long-term care facilities. The Self-Efficacy for Providing Mouth Care (SE-PMC) and Attitudes for Providing Mouth Care (A-PMC) scale evaluated the self-efficacy and attitude of nursing staff while providing oral care. However, whether this scale is valid and reliable for Chinese nursing staff in China remains unverified. This study aims to translate the English version of SE-PMC and A-PMC into Chinese and determine their reliability and validity.MethodsAfter obtaining the author's consent, the procedure for a double-back translation and cross-cultural adaptation was conducted to develop the Chinese version of SE-PMC and A-PMC. The validity and reliability of the Chinese version of SE-PMC and A-PMC were evaluated in a cross-sectional observational study with 852 nurses from 42 Geriatric Care Facilities (GCFs). Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (n = 427) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) (n = 425) were conducted to test the construct validity and quality of the factor structures. We applied the item discrimination test and homogeneity test for item analysis. Cronbach's alpha coefficient and split-half coefficient were adopted to evaluate internal consistency.ResultsThe Chinese version of SE-PMC (11 items, 3 factors) and A-PMC (11 items, 2 factors) included 22 items, reflecting adequate construct validity and reliability. In addition, test-retest reliability was 0.809 for SE-PMC and 0.811 for A-PMC, evincing good stability. The Cronbach's α coefficient of SE-PMC was 0.831, with each factor ranging from 0.793~0.906. The Cronbach's α coefficient of the A-PMC was 0.768, with each factor ranging from 0.814~0.824. Item-Content Validity Index (I-CVI) of SE-PMC and A-PMC ranged from 0.84 ~1.00 and 0.82~1.00, respectively.ConclusionThe Chinese version of SE-PMC and A-PMC was validated as a reliable assessment tool to evaluate the self-efficacy and attitude of nursing staff in GCFs for providing oral care in China.

Project description:BackgroundThe quality of life(QoL) of patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome(PSS) is affected by a variety of symptoms, and it is important to comprehensively assess the factors affecting patients' QoL.The PSS-QoL is a specific tool for the assessment of patients' QoL in the PSS. The purpose of this study was to cross-culturally adapt the PSS-QoL for the Chinese language,to establish a QoL assessment tool for PSS patients in Chinese culture and to test the reliability and validity of the PSS-QoL.MethodsOur study period was from January 17, 2024 to June 15, 2024. The study was designed as a two-stage observational study. Double forward and backward translations of the PSS-QoL were performed for cultural adaptation to the Chinese language,and the specific steps included forward and backward translations, coordination, expert correspondence, small-sample surveys, and corrections to form the final draft of the Chinese version of the PSS-QoL. From January 29, 2024 to June 15, 2024,for the evaluation of psychometric properties, 135 patients with PSS completed the Chinese version of the PSS-QoL,Short Form-12(SF-12) and EULAR Sjögren's Syndrome Patient Reported Index (ESSPRI).After 2 to 4 weeks,15 patients with PSS completed the Chinese version of the PSS-QoL for the second time.We used SPSS 26.0 software to statistically analyze the data, including item analysis and reliability and validity tests.ResultsThe Chinese version of the PSS-QoL consists of 25 questions and can be divided into two main categories: physical (discomfort and dryness) and psychosocial. The mean score on the Chinese version of the PSS-QoL was 40.46±15.00. Among the 135 patients with PSS,92.60% were female, the mean (±SD) age was 52.76±12.74 years, and the disease duration was 5 (1.5, 9) years. There was good differentiation between the individual items and the Chinese version of the PSS-QoL,as the decision value of all the items ranged from -3.223 to -12.234 (p < 0.05), the correlation coefficient between the individual items and the whole questionnaire ranged from 0.315 to 0.730 (p < 0.05), the Chinese version of the PSS-QoL had good reliability and validity,as Cronbach's α = 0.886, the Spearman-Brown coefficient was 0.782,the reliability of the individual items was 0.89,and the values of the I-CVI and S-CVI/AVE were all 1, indicating good psychometric properties. The construct validity between the Chinese version of the PSS-QoL and the ESSPRI was excellent (p = 0.506 ~0.687), and that between the PSS-QoL and the SF-12 was good(p = -0.464 ~ -0.673).ConclusionThe Chinese version of the PSS-QoL possesses good reliability and validity, and all the indicies meet the metrics and satisfy the psychometrically acceptable range;therefore, it can be used as a reliable instrument for assessing the QoL of patients with PSS in China.
