Project description:Forage quality is a key property of grassland ecosystems. In this study, grassland forage qualities were measured at 373 sampling sites throughout Guizhou Province in the karst mountain region of Southwest China, and the factors affecting it were explored. The forage quality level of most plant species was categorized into four levels: (1) preferred forage species; (2) desirable forage species; (3) consumed but undesirable forage species; and (4) non-consumable or toxic forage species. High temperature and precipitation appeared to facilitate the growth of preferred forage species, but limited the growth of other plants. Increasing soil pH had a positive impact on the number and biomass of preferred forage plants, but a negative influence on other plants, especially non-consumable or toxic plants. Both GDP and population density had a positive correlation with the number and biomass of preferred forage species, while such correlations for other levels of forage species tended to be negative. Grazing could lead to a decrease in the preferred forage species. Therefore, it is suggested that by focusing on soil improvement in grassland and maintaining an appropriate grazing intensity, global warming and rapid economic growth in Guizhou Province will likely contribute to increase the forage quality of karst grasslands in Southwest China.

Project description:Soil quality assessment is important for karst ecosystems where soil erosion is significant. A large amount of vegetation restoration has been implemented since the early 21st century in degraded karst areas across southwestern China. However, the impacts on soil quality of different restoration types rarely have been compared systematically. In the current study, we investigated the soil quality after a number of vegetation restoration projects as well as their adjacent cropland by analyzing soil samples. Six vegetation restoration types were evaluated, including one natural restoration (natural shrubland, protected for 13 years), three economic forests (4 years Eucalyptus robusta, 4 years Prunus salicina and 6 years Zenia insignis) and two mixed forests (1 year Juglans regia-crop and 13 years Toona sinensis-Pennisetum purpureum ). We evaluated the benefits of different restoration types more accurately by setting each adjacent cropland as the control and setting the variation between the corresponding restored and control site as the evaluation object so that the background differences of six sites could be eliminated. The results indicated that natural shrubland, Toona sinensis-Pennisetum purpureum and Zenia insignis were effective in improving soil quality index (SQI) in degraded karst cropland largely due to their higher SOC and TN content. The variation of SQI (VSQI) of natural shrubland was significantly higher than that in Eucalyptus robusta, Prunus salicina and Juglans regia-crop in total soil layer (0-30 cm) (P < 0.05), indicating natural shrubland had better capacity to improve soil quality. The boosting regression tree model revealed that vegetation restoration type explained 73.49% and restoration time explained 10.30% of the variation in VSQI, which confirmed that vegetation restoration type and restoration time are critical for achieving soil reserves. Therefore, it is vital to select appropriate vegetation type in restoration projects and recovery for a long time in order to achieve better soil quality. The current study provides a theoretical basis on which to assess the effects of different vegetation restoration types on the heterogeneous degraded karst areas.

Project description:In southwest China, vegetation restoration is widely used in karst rocky desertification control projects. This technology can effectively fix the easily lost soil, gradually restore the plant community and improve soil fertility. However, the change law of soil heavy metals in the restoration process remains to be further studied. Therefore, in this work, Guizhou Caohai Nature Reserve as a typical karst area was taken as the research object to investigate the influence of vegetation restoration technology on repairing soil heavy metal pollution. The spatial distribution characteristics of soil heavy metals (chromium, nickel, arsenic, zinc, lead) before and after vegetation restoration in karst area were studied by comparative analysis and linear stepwise regression analysis. The main influencing factors and spatial distribution characteristics of heavy metals in karst area were further discussed. The results showed that: (1) heavy metals in karst soils are affected by surface vegetation, root exudates, microorganisms and leaching. Only heavy metals nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) showed the tendency of surface enrichment and bottom precipitation enrichment in non-karst soils. Path analysis suggested that non-metallic soil factors such as soil bulk density (BD), total nitrogen (TN) and ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) had direct effect on the content of heavy metals in soil. (2) The proportion of 0.25–2 mm aggregates in the surface soil of vegetation restoration belt was more than 40%, and the proportion of surface soil ≤2 mm aggregates in this increased to 83% and 88%, respectively, which could improve the soil structure and properties effectively. (3) Vegetation restoration effectively restored the nutrient elements such as carbon and nitrogen in the soil, and enhanced the soil material circulation. Furthermore the content of heavy metals in the surface soil higher than that in the 10–20 cm soil layer. Plant absorption, biosorption mechanism of microorganisms, coupling of root exudates, dissolution of soil soluble organic carbon and pH make the contents of heavy metals Cr, Ni and Pb in vegetation restoration belt slightly lower than those in karst soil. At the same time, affected by vegetation coverage, residual heavy metals in soil are further leached by surface runoff. Therefore, the content of heavy metals in soil could reduce combined heavy metal enrichment plants for extraction with remediation. This study elucidates the advantages and remedy mechanism of vegetation restoration in the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils in Caohai area of Guizhou, and this plant activation and enrichment extraction remediation technology would be popularized and applied in the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils in other karst areas.

Project description:In karst ecosystems, plants absorbing smaller amounts of nutrients, owing to shallow soil, show limited growth. In addition, fine roots (diameter < 2 mm) contribute to the regulation of nutrient cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the spatial and temporal variations of fine root biomass in different vegetation types of the karst region remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the seasonal and vertical variation in biomass, necromass, and total mass of fine roots using sequential soil coring under different stages of vegetation restoration (grassland, shrubland, secondary forest, and primary forest) in Southwest China. The results showed that the fine root biomass and necromass ranged from 136.99 to 216.18 g m-2 and 47.34 to 86.94 g m-2, respectively. The total mass of fine roots and their production ranged from 187.00 to 303.11 g m-2 and 55.74 to 100.84 g m-2 year-1, respectively. They showed a single peak across the vegetation restoration gradient. The fine root biomass and total fine root mass also showed a single peak with seasonal change. In autumn, the fine root biomass was high, whereas the necromass was low. Most of the fine roots were concentrated in the surface soil layer (0-10 cm), which accounted more than 57% root biomass, and decreased with increasing soil depth. In addition, fine root production showed a similar vertical pattern of variation with biomass. Overall, our results suggested that fine roots show clear seasonal and vertical changes with vegetation succession. Moreover, there was a higher seasonal fluctuation and a greater vertical decreasing trend in late-successional stages than in the early-successional stages. The conversion of degraded land to forest could improve the productivity of underground ecosystems and vegetation restoration projects in the fragile karst region should, therefore, continue.

Project description:To explore the influence of different types of anthropogenic activity on the rivers, we investigate the major ion composition, sources and risk assessment of the karst stream (Youyu stream and Jinzhong stream), which are heavily influenced by mining activities and urban sewage, respectively. The chemical compositions of the Youyu stream water, which is heavily influenced by mining activities, are dominated by Ca2+ and SO42-. However, the chemical compositions of the Jinzhong stream water, which is heavily influenced by urban sewage, are dominated by Ca2+ and HCO3-. The Ca2+, Mg2+ and HCO3- in Jinzhong stream are mainly derived from rock weathering, while the Youyu stream is affected by acid mine drainage, and sulfuric acid is involved in the weathering process. Ion sources analysis indicates that the Na+, K+, NO3-, and Cl- in the Jinzhong stream mainly derive from urban sewage discharge; but NO3- and Cl- of the Youyu stream mainly derive from agricultural activities, and Na+, K+ are mainly from natural sources. The element ratios analysis indicates the ratio of SO42-/Mg2+ in Youyu stream (4.61) polluted by coal mine is much higher than that in Jinzhong stream (1.29), and the ratio of (Na++K++Cl-)/Mg2+ in Jinzhong stream (1.81) polluted by urban sewage is higher than Youyu stream (0.64). Moreover, the ratios of NO3-/Na+, NO3-/K+, and NO3-/Cl- in the agriculturally polluted Youyu stream were higher than those in the Jinzhong stream. We can identify the impact of human activities on streams by ion ratios (SO42-/Mg2+, (Na++K++Cl-)/Mg2+, NO3-/Na+, NO3-/K+, and NO3-/Cl-). The health risk assessment shows the HQT and HQN for children and adults are higher in Jinzhong stream than in Youyu stream and the total HQ value (HQT) of children was higher than one at J1 in the Jinzhong stream, which shows that children in Jinzhong stream basin are threatened by non-carcinogenic pollutants. Each HQ value of F- and NO3- for children was higher than 0.1 in the tributaries into Aha Lake, indicating that the children may also be potentially endangered.

Project description:In karst rocky desertification areas, bryophytes coexist with algae, bacteria, and fungi on exposed calcareous rocks to form a bryophyte crust, which plays an irreplaceable role in the restoration of karst degraded ecosystems. We investigated the biodiversity of crust bryophytes in karst rocky desertification areas from Guizhou Province, China. A total of 145 species in 22 families and 56 genera were identified. According to frequency and coverage, seven candidate dominant mosses were screened out, and five drought-resistant indexes of them were measured. Hypnum leptothallum, Racopilum cuspidigerum, and Hyophila involuta have high drought adaptability. We explored the interactions between two dominant mosses (H. leptothallum, H. involuta) and the structure of microbial communities in three karst rocky desertification types. Microbial diversity and function analysis showed that both moss species and karst rocky desertification types affect microbial communities. Moss species much more strongly affected the diversity and changed the community composition of these microbial groups. Bacteria were more sensitive in the microbiome as their communities changed strongly between mosses and drought resistance factors. Moreover, several species of fungi and bacteria could be significantly associated with three drought-resistant indexes: Pro (free proline content), SOD (superoxide dismutase activity), and POD (peroxidase activity), which were closely related to the drought adaptability of mosses. Our results enforced the potential role of moss-associated microbes that are important components involved in the related biological processes when bryophytes adapted to arid habitats, or as one kind of promoters in the distribution pattern of early mosses succession in karst rocky desertification areas.

Project description:Plant functional traits serve as a bridge between plants, the environment, and ecosystem function, playing an important role in predicting the changes in ecosystem function that occur during ecological restoration. However, the response of grassland ecosystem function to plant functional traits in the context of ecological restoration in areas of karst desertification remains unclear. Therefore, in this study, we selected five plant functional traits [namely, plant height (H), specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), root length (RL), and root dry matter content (RDMC)], measured these along with community-weighted mean (CWM) and functional trait diversity, and combined these measures with 10 indexes related to ecosystem function in order to investigate the differences in plant functional traits and ecosystem function, as well as the relationship between plant functional traits and ecosystem functions, under four ecological restoration models [Dactylis glomerata (DG), Lolium perenne (LP), Lolium perenne + Trifolium repens (LT), and natural grassland (NG)]. We found that: 1) the Margalef index and Shannon-Wiener index were significantly lower for plant species in DG and LP than for those in NG (P<0.05), while the Simpson index was significantly higher in the former than in NG (P<0.05); 2) CWMH, CWMLDMC, and CWMRDMC were significantly higher in DG, LP, and LT than in NG, while CWMSLA was significantly lower in the former than in NG (P<0.05). The functional richness index (FRic) was significantly higher in DG and LP than in NG and LT, but the functional dispersion index (FDis) and Rao's quadratic entropy index (RaoQ) were significantly lower in DG and LP than in NG and LT (P<0.05), and there was no significant difference between DG and LP, or between NG and LT (P>0.05); 3) ecosystem function, including ecosystem productivity, carbon storage, water conservation and soil conservation, was highest in LT and lowest in NG; and 4) CWMLDMC (F=56.7, P=0.024), CWMRL (F=28.7, P=0.024), and CWMH (F=4.5, P=0.048) were the main factors affecting ecosystem function. The results showed that the mixed pasture of perennial ryegrass and white clover was most conductive to restoration of ecosystem function. This discovery has important implications for the establishment of vegetation, optimal utilization of resources, and the sustainable development of degraded karst ecosystems.

Project description:Understanding how patterns of recovery and geological conditions affect microbial communities is important for determining the stability of karst ecosystems. Here, we investigated the diversity and composition of microorganisms in karst and non-karst environments under natural restoration and artificial rehabilitation conditions. The results showed no significant differences in soil microbial diversity, but the microbial communities associated with geological conditions and tree species differed significantly. Variation partitioning analysis (VPA) showed that a total of 77.3% of the variation in bacteria and a total of 69.3% of the variation in fungi could be explained by vegetation type and geological background. There were significant differences in six bacterial classes (Actinobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Ktedonobacteria, TK10, Gammaproteobacteria, and Anaerolineae) and nine fungal classes (Eurotiomycetes, Agaricomycetes, unclassified _p_Ascomycota, Sordariomycetes, Tremellomycetes, norank_k_Fungi, Pezizomycetes, Leotiomycetes and Archaeorhizomycetes) among the soils collected from six plots. A Spearman correlation heatmap showed that the microbial community was affected by the major soil properties. Principal coordinates analysis indicated that the microbial community of Pinus yunnanensis in the artificial forest, which was established for the protection of the environment was most similar to that in the natural secondary forest in the karst ecosystem. These findings further our understanding of microbial responses to vegetation restoration and geological conditions.

Project description:Three isolates of interest were collected during an investigation of freshwater fungi from wetlands in the karst regions of Guizhou Province, Southwest China. Phylogenetic analyses using ITS, LSU, SSU, and tef-1α gene regions have revealed the placements of these isolates in Melanommataceae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes). Based on the morphological and phylogenetic evidence, three new species are introduced: Byssosphaeriachishuiensis sp. nov., Camposporiumguizhouense sp. nov., and C.aquaticum sp. nov. Byssosphaeriachishuiensis is sister to B.villosa and forms a basal branch of Byssosphaeria within Melanommataceae. Byssosphaeriachishuiense is similar to B.villosa in ascal size but differs in the ascomata and ascospore sizes, and the ascospores lack appendages. Camposporiumaquaticum is sister to C.guizhouense, and they form a distinct lineage within the genus. Morphologically, C.aquaticum resembles C.guizhouense in its conidial shape but differs in conidial size. Additionally, PHI analysis is performed to further reveal that C.aquaticum and C.guizhouense have no significant recombination with related taxa. Neobyssosphaeria is synonymized under Byssosphaeria, and accordingly, Byssosphaeriaclematidis comb. nov. is proposed to accommodate Neobyssosphaeriaclematidis. The descriptions, illustrations, and notes of the novel taxa are provided along with an updated phylogenetic tree of Melanommataceae. Two synopses of the species in Byssosphaeria and Camposporium are also provided.
