Project description:Characterization of the microbial activity impacts on transport and storage of hydrogen is a crucial aspect of successful Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS). Microbes can use hydrogen for their metabolism, which can then lead to formation of biofilms. Biofilms can potentially alter the wettability of the system and, consequently, impact the flow dynamics and trapping mechanisms in the reservoir. In this study, we investigate the impact of microbial activity on wettability of the hydrogen/brine/rock system, using the captive-bubble cell experimental approach. Apparent contact angles are measured for bubbles of pure hydrogen in contact with a solid surface inside a cell filled with living brine which contains sulphate reducing microbes. To investigate the impact of surface roughness, two different solid samples are used: a "rough" Bentheimer Sandstone sample and a "smooth" pure Quartz sample. It is found that, in systems where buoyancy and interfacial forces are the main acting forces, the impact of biofilm formation on the apparent contact angle highly depends on the surface roughness. For the "rough" Bentheimer sandstone, the apparent contact angle was unchanged by biofilm formation, while for the smooth pure Quartz sample the apparent contact angle decreased significantly, making the system more water-wet. This decrease in apparent contact angle is in contrast with an earlier study present in the literature where a significant increase in contact angle due to microbial activity was reported. The wettability of the biofilm is mainly determined by the consistency of the Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) which depends on the growth conditions in the system. Therefore, to determine the impact of microbial activity on the wettability during UHS will require accurate replication of the reservoir conditions including surface roughness, chemical composition of the brine, the microbial community, as well as temperature, pressure and pH-value conditions.

Project description:Hydrogen is globally acknowledged as a versatile energy carrier crucial for decarbonization in multiple sectors. Many countries have initiated the development of national hydrogen roadmaps and strategies, recognizing hydrogen as a strategic resource for achieving sustainable energy transitions. Formulating these guidelines for future action demands a solid technical foundation to facilitate well-informed decision-making. Energy system modelling has emerged as a significant scientific tool to assist governments and ministries in designing hydrogen pathways assessments based on scientific outcomes. The first step in the modelling process involves gathering, curating, and managing techno-economic data, a process that is often time-consuming and hindered by the unavailability and inaccessibility of data sources. This paper introduces an open techno-economic dataset encompassing key technologies within the hydrogen supply chain, spanning from production to end-use applications. Energy modelers, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders can leverage this dataset for energy planning models, with a specific focus on hydrogen pathways. The presented data is designed to promote modelling studies that are retrievable, reusable, repeatable, reconstructable, interoperable, and auditable (U4RIA). This enhanced transparency aims to foster greater public trust, scientific reproducibility, and increased collaboration amongst academia, industry, and government in producing technical reports that underpin national hydrogen roadmaps and strategies.

Project description:Accurately assessing the adsorption and diffusion behaviors of H2, CH4, and their mixtures are essential for estimating underground hydrogen storage (UHS). This understanding is critical for the safe and efficient storage of H2 in depleted shale gas reservoirs. Although H2 adsorption in kerogen has been extensively studied, adsorption-induced swelling remains unexplored in UHS. In this study, we investigate adsorption mechanisms using Lagrangian and Eulerian approaches and analyze diffusion in kerogen through molecular simulations. Our results reveal that in the presence of cushion gases like CH4, which exhibit stronger adsorption than H2, neglecting kerogen deformation can lead to an underestimation of storage capacity by approximately 40%. Furthermore, increasing pressure makes H2 adsorption behavior deviate from the consistent swelling trend that is observed with CH4, with kerogen either swelling or contracting depending on the pore size. Simulations also predict that H2 self-diffusion coefficient in porous kerogen is 1 order of magnitude higher than CH4. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating kerogen flexibility into the modeling of UHS involving multiple gas species to improve the accuracy and safety of H2 storage operations in shale reservoirs.

Project description:The production of green hydrogen requires renewable electricity and a supply of sustainable water. Due to global water scarcity, using seawater to produce green hydrogen is particularly important in areas where freshwater resources are scarce. This study establishes a system model to simulate and optimize the integrated technology of seawater desalination by membrane distillation and hydrogen production by alkaline water electrolysis. Technical economics is also performed to evaluate the key factors affecting the economic benefits of the coupling system. The results show that an increase in electrolyzer power and energy efficiency will reduce the amount of pure water. An increase in the heat transfer efficiency of the membrane distillation can cause the breaking of water consumption and production equilibrium, requiring a higher electrolyzer power to consume the water produced by membrane distillation. The levelized costs of pure water and hydrogen are US$1.28 per tonne and $1.37/kg H2, respectively. The most important factors affecting the production costs of pure water and hydrogen are electrolyzer power and energy efficiency. When the price of hydrogen rises, the project's revenue increases significantly. The integrated system offers excellent energy efficiency compared to conventional desalination and hydrogen production processes, and advantages in terms of environmental protection and resource conservation.

Project description:Renewable, low-carbon biofuels offer the potential opportunity to decarbonize marine transportation. This paper presents a comparative techno-economic analysis and process sustainability assessment of four conversion pathways: (1) hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of wet wastes such as sewage sludge and manure; (2) fast pyrolysis of woody biomass; (3) landfill gas Fischer-Tropsch synthesis; and (4) lignin-ethanol oil from the lignocellulosic ethanol biorefinery utilizing reductive catalytic fractionation. These alternative marine biofuels have a modeled minimum fuel selling price between $1.68 and $3.98 per heavy fuel oil gallon equivalent in 2016 U.S. dollars based on a mature plant assessment. The selected pathways also exhibit good process sustainability performance in terms of water intensity compared to the petroleum refineries. Further, the O and S contents of the biofuels vary widely. While the non-HTL biofuels exhibit negligible S content, the raw biocrudes via HTL pathways from sludge and manure show relatively high S contents (>0.5 wt %). Partial or full hydrotreatment can effectively lower the biocrude S content. Additionally, co-feeding with other low-sulfur wet wastes such as food waste can provide another option to produce raw biocrude with lower S content to meet the target with further hydrotreatment. This study indicates that biofuels could be a cost-effective fuel option for the marine sector. Marine biofuels derived from various feedstocks and conversion technologies could mitigate marine biofuel adoption risk in terms of feedstock availability and biorefinery economics.

Project description:Drinking water scarcity is a global challenge as groundwater and surface water availability diminishes. The atmosphere is an alternative freshwater reservoir that has universal availability and could be harvested as drinking water. In order to effectively perform atmospheric water harvesting (AWH), we need to (1) understand how different climate regions (e.g., arid, temperate, and tropical) drive the amount of water that can be harvested and (2) determine the cost to purchase, operate, and power AWH. This research pairs thermodynamics with techno-economic analysis to calculate the water productivity and cost breakdown of a representative condensation-based AWH unit with water treatment. We calculate the monthly and annual levelized cost of water from AWH as a function of climate and power source (grid electricity vs renewable energy from solar photovoltaics (PV)). In our modeled unit, AWH can provide 1744-2710 L/month in a tropical climate, 394-1983 L/month in a temperate climate, and 37-1470 L/month in an arid climate. The levelized cost of water of AWH powered by the electrical grid is $0.06/L in a tropical climate, $0.09/L in a temperate climate, and $0.17/L in an arid climate. If off-grid solar PV was purchased at the time of purchasing the AWH unit to power the AWH, the costs increase to $0.40/L in an arid climate, $0.17/L in a temperate climate, and $0.10/L in a tropical climate. However, if using existing solar PV there are potential cost reductions of 4.25-5-fold between purchasing and using existing solar PV, and 2-3-fold between using the electrical grid and existing solar PV, with the highest cost reductions occurring in the tropical climate. Using existing solar PV, the levelized cost of AWH is $0.09/L in an arid climate, $0.04/L in a temperate climate, and $0.02/L in a tropical climate.

Project description:Sugarcane bagasse (SCB) is a significant agricultural residue generated by sugar mills based on sugarcane crop. Valorizing carbohydrate-rich SCB provides an opportunity to improve the profitability of sugar mills with simultaneous production of value-added chemicals, such as 2,3-butanediol (BDO). BDO is a prospective platform chemical with multitude of applications and huge derivative potential. This work presents the techno-economic and profitability analysis for fermentative production of BDO utilizing 96 MT of SCB per day. The study considers plant operation in five scenarios representing the biorefinery annexed to a sugar mill, centralized and decentralized units, and conversion of only xylose or total carbohydrates of SCB. Based on the analysis, the net unit production cost of BDO in the different scenarios ranged from 1.13 to 2.28 US$/kg, while the minimum selling price varied from 1.86 to 3.99 US$/kg. Use of the hemicellulose fraction alone was shown to result in an economically viable plant; however, this was dependent on the condition that the plant would be annexed to a sugar mill which could supply utilities and the feedstock free of cost. A standalone facility where the feedstock and utilities were procured was predicted to be economically feasible with a net present value of about 72 million US$, when both hemicellulose and cellulose fractions of SCB were utilized for BDO production. Sensitivity analysis was also conducted to highlight some key parameters affecting plant economics.

Project description:BackgroundAlcohol-to-jet (ATJ) is one of the technical feasible biofuel technologies. It produces jet fuel from sugary, starchy, and lignocellulosic biomass, such as sugarcane, corn grain, and switchgrass, via fermentation of sugars to ethanol or other alcohols. This study assesses the ATJ biofuel production pathway for these three biomass feedstocks, and advances existing techno-economic analyses of biofuels in three ways. First, we incorporate technical uncertainty for all by-products and co-products though statistical linkages between conversion efficiencies and input and output levels. Second, future price uncertainty is based on case-by-case time-series estimation, and a local sensitivity analysis is conducted with respect to each uncertain variable. Third, breakeven price distributions are developed to communicate the inherent uncertainty in breakeven price. This research also considers uncertainties in utility input requirements, fuel and by-product outputs, as well as price uncertainties for all major inputs, products, and co-products. All analyses are done from the perspective of a private firm.ResultsThe stochastic dominance results of net present values (NPV) and breakeven price distributions show that sugarcane is the lowest cost feedstock over the entire range of uncertainty with the least risks, followed by corn grain and switchgrass, with the mean breakeven jet fuel prices being $0.96/L ($3.65/gal), $1.01/L ($3.84/gal), and $1.38/L ($5.21/gal), respectively. The variation of revenues from by-products in corn grain pathway can significantly impact its profitability. Sensitivity analyses show that technical uncertainty significantly impacts breakeven price and NPV distributions.ConclusionsTechnical uncertainty is critical in determining the economic performance of the ATJ fuel pathway. Technical uncertainty needs to be considered in future economic analyses. The variation of revenues from by-products plays a significant role in profitability. With the distribution of breakeven prices, potential investors can apply whatever risk preferences they like to determine an appropriate bid or breakeven price that matches their risk profile.

Project description:The purpose of this research is to demonstrate through a techno-economic assessment that aniline can be industrially produced using a profitable and inherently safer process than the ones currently employed. The aniline production process was designed using process simulation software. From this, the mass and energy balances were determined, the equipment sizing was performed and the net present value (NPV) was calculated to be USD 93.5 million. Additionally, a heat integration analysis was carried out in order to improve process profitability, obtaining a new NPV of USD 97.5 million. The economic sensitivity analysis showed that the process could withstand fixed capital investment changes of up to +89%, weighted average cost of capital changes between 16-24% and a decrease in cyclohexylamine demand of up to 44%. The conceptual design is still profitable when aniline price is varied in a range of 1224-1840 $/t and phenol cost in a range of 815-1178 $/t.

Project description:The growing interest in large-scale underground hydrogen (H2) storage (UHS) emphasizes the need for a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental characteristics of subsurface environments. The wetting preference of subsurface rock is a crucial parameter influencing the H2 flow behavior during storage and withdrawal processes. In this study, we utilized molecular dynamics simulation to evaluate the wetting preference of the silica surface in subsurface hydrogen systems, with the aim of addressing disparities observed in experimental results. We conducted an initial comprehensive assessment of potential models, comparing the wettability of five common silica surfaces with different surface morphologies and hydroxyl densities in CO2-H2/water/silica systems against experimental data. After introducing the INTERFACE force field as the most accurate potential model for the silica surface, we evaluated the wetting behavior of the α-quartz (101) surface with a hydroxyl density of 5.9 number/nm2 under the impact of actual geological storage conditions (333-413 K and 10-30 MPa), the coexistence of cushion gases (i.e., CO2, CH4, and N2) at various mole fractions, and pH levels ranging from 2 to 11 characterized through considering the negative charges of 0 to -0.12 C/m2 via deprotonation of silanol on the silica surface. Our results indicate that neither pressure nor temperature has a significant impact on the wetness of the silica in the case of pure H2 (single component UHS operations). However, when CO2 coexists with H2, especially at higher mole fractions, an increase in pressure and a decrease in temperature lead to higher contact angles. Moreover, when the mole fraction of cushion gas ranges from 0 to 1, the contact angle increases 20, 9.5, and 4.5° for CO2, CH4, and N2, respectively, on the neutral silica substrate. Interestingly, at higher pH conditions where the silica surface carries a negative charge, the contact angle considerably reduces where surface charges of -0.03 and -0.06 C/m2 result in an average reduction of 20 and 80% in the contact angle, respectively. More importantly, at a pH of ∼11 (-0.12 C/m2), a 0° contact angle is observed for the silica surface under all temperatures, pressures, types of cushion gases, and varying mole fractions.
